Incredible New Obama Ad Tries to Prove Romney Misquoted Obama…by Playing the Exact Quote Romney Used

In less than 24 hours, Team Obama has responded to the Romney campaign’s devastating “These Hands” ad with a video accusing the former Massachusetts governor of “saying anything” to get elected. But just wait until you see see what they use as the evidence.

The ad, titled “Mitt Romney: Saying Anything to Get Elected,” begins with a clip of Governor Romney quoting the president as saying, “If you got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”

The video then splashes these words across the screen: “The only problem? That’s not what [Obama] said.”

No. No, we’re pretty sure that’s exactly what he said [emphasis added]:

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together.

So, wait. What do they mean by “That’s not what he said”? Sure they can argue about context, but that’s still exactly what the president said:

It seems that the video wants to argue that Romney is guilty of “saying anything” to get elected because, um, he quoted the president. We’re not entirely sure how this works.

Final thought – Now, we’ve already addressed the president’s “ham-fisted” populist remarks and we’ve already noted that he’s not entirely incorrect when he says society plays a role in individual success. But, come on, somebody in the Chicago Machine must understand these prepared remarks come off as insulting, inflammatory, and abrasive, right?

Final Thought II — Isn’t it a little odd that the Obama team is accusing Romney of “saying anything”? Consider: It’s coming from the same team that in 2008 promised U.S. voters that the nomination of Barack Obama would mean “care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless,” that the oceans would stop rising, that our planet would be healed, that we’d secure our nation, and restore our image as the last, best hope on Earth?

Yeah, we still remember that speech.

UPDATE: One more point and then we’re finished [we swear].

The Obama ad claims Romney agrees with the president when he says “somebody along the line gave you some help” and that “you couldn’t have a business without [infrastructure].”

From there, we’re supposed to conclude that because Romney will attack the president even over issues they both agree on, he’ll say anything to get elected.

But in accusing the former Massachusetts governor of taking the president out of context, the Obama campaign takes Romney out of context. This is what he actually said [emphasis added]:

He said this: “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” That somebody else is government, in his view. He goes on to describe the people who deserve the credit for building this business. And, of course, he describes people who we care very deeply about, who make a difference in our lives: our schoolteachers, firefighters, people who build roads. We need those things. We value schoolteachers, firefighters, people who build roads. You really couldn’t have a business if you didn’t have those things.

But, you know, we pay for those things. Alright? The taxpayers pay for government. It’s not like government just provides those to all of us and we say, “Oh, thank you government for doing those things.” No, in fact, we pay for them and we benefit from them and we appreciate the work that they do and the sacrifices that are done by people who work in government. But they did not build this business.

That’s a little different from simply agreeing with the president, wouldn’t you agree? But, again, what was the point of the Obama video? Oh, that’s right: if you take someone out of context, you’re totally willing to say anything to get elected.

You can’t make this stuff up, folks.

      Look, both ads do nothing to get to the roots of the problem we are facing, why? This is the type of campaign we will see from both of them through the campaign season. Why doesn’t Romney do what Paul would do? Hit Obama on his policies and what Obama’s policies are doing to the country? Because Romney is not much different than Obama, that’s why.
      I am to the point where I figure none of you are going to wake up. On election day in November, if Romney is the nominee, all of you are going to be walking around like zombies after the MSM announces that Obama has reached the Electoral College threshold and has won a second term. Oh well, we will lose our sovereignty and Constitution and we will all truly be slaves. I will be sure to thank all of you when this happens, for not listening to an actual honest candidate.

      I don’t use big words or try to be flamboyant here on The Blaze but, (unlike JZS) I do know the English language. The issue here, with this Obama speech, is one of the the reasons why Obama won’t release his College transcripts. He failed (or received very low grades) in English.

      Obama, when off teleprompter, exhibits his weakness of the English language and his misunderstanding of nouns and pronouns. He does this a lot. Don’t get me wrong. Obama is one bad a$$ anti-American; he hates capitalism and the Constitution like Women in India hate snakes.

      What Obama “meant” to say was that businesses didn’t create the roads or bridges that connect people to businesses or businesses to other businesses. He did not mean to say that business owners did not create their companies. He just doesn’t understand the English language and has probably done too many drugs in his Life. He’s also some kind of Fascist, Socialist, Communist, Marxist,anti-Colonialist that hates America with a passion one or two notches lower than his wife.

      If you watch Obama’s body language, it‘s easy to tell when he’s lying and/or speaking from his anti-American foul heart. In this case (speech), I side with Obama. He failed English and will not deliver his transcripts because of this as well as other failures. A good speaking voice does not make a good Statesman or POTUS.

      Funny, I thought Ron Paul had a secret pact with Romney during the primaries….. Oh , that’s right, Paul respects Romney as an honest man with different views. Look West Coast, one day, if you do actually grow up or actually have a little more life experience under your belt, you will find out the world is full of dopes who promise the grass is greener on the other side. Liberals are particularly famous for painting a picture of some utopian state where everything is perfect and reality is non-existent. You Paul people are no different, maybe even worse, as you pretend to have some simple solution to very complex and complicated issues. Issues that have been unsolvable since as far back as recorded history will take us. If you fellows would spend half as much effort and energy actually changing your life and your world, I assure you, the effect of this motion would bring us far closer to the existence you desire than any single man, president, or otherwise, could cause. I had always thought there was some secret formula or solution or trick to life that I could discover and live happily ever after.       Hey MONK, I’m not an MD, but with my LE background I’ve observed this pattern before along with some of the twitching that 0bama does. My concern is that is from heavy drug use, even if he is clean now. Which I really doubt. Not making this an out and out accusation. It’s just that I have seen behavior too many times. I suspect plenty of cocaine use, and possibly some meth.

      When Obama said “that” he was referring to infrastructure and education. When Romney said “that” he IMPLIED Obama was referring to the Business in question.

      That is not only taking the quote out of context, that is being outright deceitful.

      Hey MONK, LOL, good one. I was away for a while watching a video that I found about the difference between the left and right forms of government. I think that JZS needs to see it, but it is not the one that I have found years ago that I had my son watch as he entered high school. JZS has expressed a lack of comprehension regarding his thoughts that Nazism, and Fascism were right wing forms of government. I imagine that a number of college/university professors have lied to him. Or, they have been lied to, and no true understanding of the terms. Too bad that history books are written these days by those ‘properly’ indoctrinated with the right amount of propaganda. Check it out.

      Now even Becket understands what context is. Everyday he displays the solidly christian principle of putting a negative context on anything related to the PRESIDENT. In this case the context and the quote refers to the building of the support infrastructure such as highways, communications, shipping ports, airports, schools, etc. that support the development of businesses of all kinds. And last time I checked the SBA has given out a ton of loan guarantees in situations where the Private banks won’t lend money.

    Although Mr. Obama is not at his most articulate in conveying his basic point, clearly the subordinate clause “that” is referring to the “unbelievable American system” and ‘roads and bridges” and not “a business”.

    Even a 5 year old child could understand “that”.

      1- You get a job (small business or enterprise).
      2- They pay you a salary.
      3- The government collects taxes from you for infrastructure.
      4- Roads get built.

      Municipalities collect taxes from WORKING people because they have an income from one of these companies, businesses. If it were not for these enterprises that create jobs, where would you get the money to build roads and bridges? Even a 5 year old can answer that! For example, the roads and infrastructure create conditions that allow FedEx and UPS to be successful, but then why isn’t the post office?       I know that is the line the administration is telling you fools to put out there, but if you listen to the whole speech that is clearly not what he was saying. He goes on to say that hard work and intelligence do not make you successful, that lots of people have those qualities. Then goes off on the infrastruction makes you successful. Combine this with previous statements from those in his administration and comrads (Elizabeth Warren), this is exactly what they believe. They believe achievers are nothing more than lucky and thus do not DESERVE what they have, so it is okay to take it from them for the collective. You can’t spin it. “The private sector is doing fine”, what we need is more govenment spending. Follow all his of teleprompter speeches, and a pattern emerges. “Spread the wealth around”.

      To all you geniuses making the argument that it’s the businesses that built the roads and bridges and not government.

      This is a chicken vs. egg argument. It doesn‘t really matter which came first the roads or the businesses the fact of the matter is that free enterprise and government aren’t going away. Business will still need good infrastructure and governments will still need taxes to build and maintain it.

      I can argue for instance that in the history of the US there where probably thousands of infrastructure projects that were not directly financed by business, but by pure debt financing through bond issues which nevertheless paid off in a better business environment in the future. The internet infrastructure, an example which Mr. Obama gives, was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

      I suppose this a debate worth having, but it’s beside the point since Mr. Romney, FNC and the rest of the right wing cooks out there are still screaming that Mr. Obama was referring to “a business” when he said “you didn’t build that” and that’s clearly a lie.

      Final Thought: Now, strictly speaking, the president wasn’t wrong when he said society (as a whole) has a place in individual success. The social contract, that thing Hobbes talks about, does enable us to flourish and grow.

      It doesn’t matter what you want “that” to mean. It is clear that after listening to the speech that Obama means to say that you did not create your business because of your talents. Thus, you did not build your business. If Obama believes that business owners built their business then he would not believe that they owe anyone anything. After all….they paid their “fair share” of taxes (according to the tax code) as everyone else. Its like trying to say that I spell “colour” wrong, because you want to spell it “color”. Your argument is just as incorrect as trying to say Canadians are not racist; you frog.

      By the way your name suits you. Anyone that has lived in Canada knows that the canadian goose (aka the Canadian Air Force) does nothing but crap all over the place. I guess back in the 80′s the Americans had it right. Because we are learning in Canada that the conservatives have started to straighten our country out.

      Another note, when do you think we will smarten up and get rid of our government health system that we have never been able to pay for?!? Oh wait… we are working on that now aren’t we.

      Obama also talks about police and firemen as well a couple other things paid for by the state through property and state taxes. The amount built by FEDERAL taxes is minimal and makes the case that federal taxes should be lowered.

      If all it took was infrastructure for business to succeed…then we would ALL be successful business owners. Every business would succeed. We would ALL be rich. After all the sidewalks and streets run in front of all our homes and businesses. And the schools, firemen and police are available to us ALL. And it is not a chicken / egg thing, their was business in this country, before there was A COUNTRY (do you think colonists sat around wishing there was a government to come take care of them). People make this country great, government does not make this country great. Government takes money out of the economy and occasionally does some good with it, but for the most part ****** it away. And until someone is a good steward with what they have, I do not believe we should give them more. Take your communist Obama supporting spin elsewhere, that stuff doesn’t fly in AMERICA!

      How do you reconcile infrastructure projects like DARPA which led directly to the modern internet, Hoover Dam, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the interstate highway system and the transcontinental railroad reconcile with local or even state taxes.

No. Anyway even if “that” is misunderstood in Obama’s quote, doesn‘t it show that the smartest man in the room who’s “brain is too big for his head” (quoting Joe Biden about Obama) is not all that articulate? Besides didn’t he also tell us that the “old ways” didn’t work in America, and so we needed to change them? Wasn’t that wonderful American system a result of the old ways of doing things, as were the roads?

    I’m willing to predict that the momentum is building behind Romney to win in November..Obama knows this. Liberal pundits know this. The writing is beginning to be written on the wall. It‘s becoming clear that it’s Romney’s election to lose at this point.
    By the way…386,000 jobless claims this week? I suggest Obama “pivot to focus like a laser on jobs” once again (what’s this? the eleventh or twelfth time he’s “pivotted”?) and stop worrying about Romney’s taxes and who was at Bain and when. Americans are noticing that Obama is lost and floundering and in way over his pay grade.

    Quote mining is the intentional mischaracterization of a persons words by taking a quote out of context. Business are built USING EXISTING INFRASTRUCTURE, and it is clear that the ‘that’ President Obama is referring to is infrastructure, not the business.       Where did the government get the money from? They got the money from taxes that were paid mostly by the rich and business owners. Also it is not taken out of context. Look at the first line the president is saying you had help to get where you are, then he states you didnt build that. So I would say it is most certainly not out of context.

      The problem is, his “solution” to building the new generation of infrastructure doesn’t work. In any logical use of mathematics, the cost of building this new infrastructure is incredibly high and the level of revenue required to build it would require not only raising the taxes on the entire citizenry, but effectively cutting down all other government operations to the bare bones minimum. The latter of those things is not happening, and likely won’t happen. So all we’ll end up with is a bunch of projects that sound great and chip away at the problem, while the old cities and systems fall into utter ruin.

      Plus, the whole notion that because you were successful using the same infrastructure that everyone else uses you have to pay more than the rest, doesn’t make sense. It’s like a family where everyone mooches off the one sibling who went and did something with their life, while the rest don’t contribute really anything. You take from them from long enough and don’t show much gratitude, eventually their charity runs out. Trust me, that is a really bad day.

    Once again we see the growing desperation of the Obama campaign; they have nothing to stand on and thus have to fall back to lies, spin and character assassination. The people are waking up to the truth, and we need to keep pushing hard for Romeny this November.

      The problem is he said what he meant, and continued to explain how you as an individual didn’t make it on your own. I heard the entire speech, and it is being used in context. So, in this case, there is no Misquoting.
