As world leaders met today in Paris to discuss immediate international military action against Moammar Gadhafi’s forces in Libya, we see this stunning footage of what the war on the ground in that country actually looks like:
French officials have said that they expect military action could begin within hours after the meeting – but the outcome remained uncertain and it was not clear what effect developments on the ground might have.
France, Britain and the United States were among the major backers of a muscular U.N. Security Council resolution passed Thursday that authorizes a no-fly zone over Libya and “all necessary measures” to protect civilians.
France’s U.N. ambassador Gerard Araud told BBC Newsnight that he expected military action to begin within hours of the hastily organized summit in response to the onslaught by Gadhafi’s artillery, warplanes and tanks against rebel-controlled areas.
The AP contributed to this report.
UPDATE: The downed plane was a rebel fighter jet shot down accidentally. Reuters reports:
A warplane was shot down on Saturday over the Libyan city of Benghazi and an opposition activist said it was a rebel fighter jet hit by accident.
Azeldin al-Sharif, an opposition activist, said rebel forces had brought the plane down by mistake over the city of Benghazi.
The city came under attack from forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi on Saturday, including air strikes by planes loyal to the government.
“The fighter jet that was brought down this morning, was a revolutionary fighter jet and was hit by mistake. There is no communication on the ground,” said Sharif, head of the British-Libyan Solidarity Campaign.

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 11:45amI don’t assume it was shot down. It looks like it could have been an engine failure. I didn’t see the pilot eject.
Report Post »>Possibly a jet commandeered by rebels (muslim brotherhood supporters) who dont know how to properly maintain the aircraft and subsequently experienced a mechanical failure in flight.
>The pilot was poorly trained and caused the engine to fail and was also not able to punch out of the cockpit even though there was ample time to do so.

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 11:19amThe story didn’t say who shot the plane down.
It did say that France, Britain, and the United States were strong backers of the UN resolution re the no-fly over Libya.
That’s not exactly what a British newspaper is saying about how other countries feel about the U.S. and Obama’s response to Libya. Here’s the link to the story:

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 11:27amThe Libian Pilots always land its just that they seldom land in one piece, and usually without the plane being intact or in any reconizable shape.

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 11:12amAs CNN has reported, this was a “rebel” plane. And CNN was also talking about battles between Gadhafi‘s tanks and the opposition’s tanks. We have been led to believe that these are people with pitchforks facing Gadhafi’s armies. Hence, the need for a “humanitarian” intervention. What is really going on? Who is arming these people? And, why were the rebels flying in the “no fly zone”? Has NATO told them they can fly against Gadhafi, but NATO will shoot down Gadhafi’s planes?

Posted on March 20, 2011 at 9:27amInteresting that the rebel ‘problem’ for Gadhafi is to the East! Maybe Eqypt??? I don’t think Gadhafi is well-liked in the arab world. With all the tribal-rivalries, the best strategy might be to tie all their tails together and throw the bunch of cats over a power line–let ‘em hash it out amongst themselves?

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 11:14amPresident Ronald Reagan actually ordered the U.S. Air Froce to bomb Gadhafi‘s personal residence in Libya in the mid 1980’s after Lybian terrorist killed American soldiers at a nightclub somewhere in Europe. The bombers were U.S. F-111‘s they bombed one of Gadhafi’s holmes in Libya and almost killed him, Momarr escaping 10 minutes before the bombs hit.

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 12:20pmyep. killed his daughter. I’d much rather it had been him. Don’t start thinking war can be made pretty. Once you do that we will have one every day. Waqr is a sick twisted thing but sometimes it has to happen. trying to take the pain out of it will just make it too easy to start one. Keep being horrified. Keep hating it. That’s the reason we all look to a quick end to conflict. no one Wants to kill others unless they are sick but men have fights and sometime those fights kill people. Hate it and avoid it where ever you can but never run from a fight or you will always be a slave.

I don’t think we should necessarily send ground troops but it shows how the Moron in Chief speaks out of both sides of his mouth. A no fly zone is not a means to take out the dictator, it’s only trying to level the theater for the rebels. And look, wow! It only took, what, a month for him to say something? I count my luck charms every night for such a great wishy washy “leader”. Pfft…..

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 4:37pmPlease STOP…
Does anyone really know who the rebels are?
If these uprisings were scheduled and orchestrated throughout the ‘hot’ zone, who is really behind this all? Gadhafi is nuts, always has been. But, my question is WHO is backing all this uprising – it does take $$$. They aren’t throwing stones, they have plenty of heavy duty fire power and that is NOT cheap. SOMEONE is behind this who is organized and has big bucks.
Look at Israel, Fatah (West Bank) and Hamas (Gaza) are at each other’s throats. And they claim to want peace with Israel? Hamas attacked those in Gaza who rallied for cooperation with Abbas and Fatah in the West Bank and beat up several reporters and trashed news offices. Did the Lame stream media drones report this????
Why is it that the UN is so ready to get involved, Whenever the UN is FOR something…it makes me wonder. We know why the cat has Obama’s tongue and his feet stuck in the mud. BUT why is the UN so GUNG HO??? I don’t believe they feel sorry for the Libyans. Ghadafi has been stomping on them for DECADES – remember he has had favored thug status there for a long time……..
There are many refugees in Libya from the Sudan, Egypt, etc. and Gadafi has been blaming them for the rebellion, yet the rebel forces are also blaming the refugees who are trying to immigrate to Europe. So the immigrants are hunted down and persecuted by BOTH. I thought the radical left loved transient immigrants – or is that ONLY in the US?

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 5:01pmVery cool. Hey, didn’t President Obama say the prison at Guantanamo Bay is an “Al Qaeda Recruiting Tool”? I wonder what Al Qaeda thinks of this attack on a Arabic country? Either recruitment is up, or they’re looking to fill the leadership gap left after Muammar Gaddafi and the other leaders are deposed.
