‘Indecent Exposure’: College Athlete Arrested at Airport for Saggy Pants

Wearing his pants like this led to one New Mexico football player's arrest in Calif.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Police say a University of New Mexico football player’s saggy pants led to his arrest at San Francisco International Airport.
Sgt. Michael Rodriguez says 20-year-old Deshon Marman was boarding a flight Wednesday to Albuquerque, N.M., when a U.S. Airways employee noticed his pants were “below his buttocks, but above the knees, and his boxer shorts were showing.”
Rodriguez tells the San Francisco Chronicle that the employee asked Marman to pull up his pants, but he refused. She then asked him to leave the plane.
The officer says that after 15 minutes, Marman got off the plane and was cited for trespassing.
Marman’s mother, Donna Doyle, tells the paper that her son had attended a friend’s funeral and he was still in an emotionally raw state.
US Airways spokeswoman Valerie Wunder says the airline’s dress code forbids “indecent exposure or inappropriate” attire.

Who determines what is appropriate? Who decides what doesn’t offend? The removal of the boy from the plane based on his sagging pants is arbitrary.
Adding insult to injury, the mother’s statement that her son was removed because of his color goes too far. His color??? Really, Mom??? Then adding to her silliness, she suggests that everyone give him a break because he is a light-skinned black kid, with dread, who lost his friend, and is tired. Come on Mom….

Thought maybe he had to wear hand-me-downs 3 sizes too big because his family couldn’t afford clothes to fit him. I wondered how much teasing he got from his peers. I soon found out my sympathy was unnecessary. The idiot chose to walk around looking like that.
FYI – from an experienced parent: The best way to keep your kid from following some ridiculous appearance trend is to embrace it whole-heartedly (unless it is totally out of the question – then just put your foot down and say NO – gotta pick your battles). Tell them how cool it is, take them shopping and insist you want to buy them the “right” clothes – gush to the salesclerks about how great you think it is, tell them mom and/or dad is going to start dressing this way because you love it so much. Thank your kid repeatedly for showing you how to be “cool”. Ask them to pick out YOUR clothes so you can dress just like them …. etc etc etc. I guarantee they won’t dress like that for long.

A local business is (or should be) allowed to decide what they think is acceptable for THEIR establishment. one of two things will happen, either A people will chose not to dress in saggy pants if it is a pain in the a$$ to get in anywhere……or B the businesses may see they are losing money by turning away the saggy pants people, because it is so popular and they will allow it. Of course there will always be people who choose to be different, and they have a right to do that as well……but that is true freedom at work….its like free market or something….lol

Hubby rolled down the window, put the stink eye on them, and said very loudly and sternly, “Turn that #hit down”. They turned it way down and wouldn’t even look at hubby. He’s a big intimidating looking guy. It was kind of surreal, but it makes me giggle thinking about it now.

I will say though any private organization does have the right to enforce any rules they see fit especially to satisfy their customer base. That being said the government is not afforded the same luxury. I don’t like it when people wear clothes like that but I am not the supreme ruler of the world. I am sure that some things I do that are similar are rejected by others and would not want my freedoms infringed upon due to their bias.

Is a difference between racism and reality. I read most of the replies, and not really hearing folks say that it is dumb for blacks to wear their pants down. People seem to think it stupid for anyone to wear their pants down. Be not dismayed though, there is a bright spot to all of this.
Check out your local paper, or elsewhere where you can see the local criminals in your area once arrested. Take notice that much of those getting arrested, wear the baggy pants, nappy braids, and have that thug look. One would think that those who set out to commit crime, may dress accordingly. If I were to sell drugs, and knew that getting chased by police was very likely, I would dress for the occasion. Oh say something like work out pants, and well fitted running shoes.
Good things for the cops, Pookey, Ray-Ray, and Tyrone are not smart enough to think like me. Their thug, gangster, rap music listening selves stick out like a sore thumb. When the po po does show up, this ignorant crowd all grab their oversized pants, and attempt to run. Generally, they get tripped up by their own attire. Not only do they make it easy for cops to ID them, they also give fat old donut eating cops an advantage in catching these morons.

Not a hater, and to each his own. Most of it makes me laugh. I am careful about what box I jump into, and want to know who actually put the label on it in the first place.
Before I went and started loving the ghetto image, I would want to know who put me in the ghetto in the first place. Who owns MTV (what color are they, and what is their agenda)? Why did they have a vested interest in depicting black folks a certain way, and if I am black, do I want to be depicted that way? Will I become what they want me to become?
If you could bring Fredrick Douglas, Booker T, MLK…. back from the grave, what would they think of the hood? Would they be proud at the number of black males that murder and kill each other? Would they be proud of the number of black babies getting aborted. Would they be proud of the drop out rate of blacks in school, and at the number of blacks that can not read (remember, these men fought so blacks could be educated).
The ghetto, rap, gangster culture is killing black people, not helping them. You seem to write rather well. I would assume that you are the sort of man that could be an example to others, not one that would embrace stupidity.

Lets talk about the Federal Government ACTUALLY killing people and operating as gangsters and mafia hitmen…
The only people I see imitating that directly is the Police State. Most of the stuff that rappers talk about is fabricated anyway, nobody is really in the streets doing ALL of that crap.

On this I have to disagree of it being racism. While some on this thread subtly speak there racism I honestly don’t believe just one group sags. In fact I know it isn’t just one race doing it but all races do it. It’s a generation thing just like some rolled their pants jeans and others wore their pants up to their necks.
I find showing ones rear equal to showing ones front and find it indecent. I think over time it will be like any fad and go away. I have many different race of friends and all agree sagging is childish and rebellious. Just my thoughts.

It‘s not a minority thing though as I’ve seen many white boys here in OK sagging as well as blacks, Hispanics, etc. It a generation thing IMO.
As for racial profiling I’m not so sure. Wouldn‘t it be easier to just profile by skin then who is sagging and who isn’t? I don’t understand how profiling by sagging helps “authorities” or what info they gain from it. It would be equivalent to profiling by shoe style, flip flops or sneakers.
I do agree with you, the police state is way out of hand. Anyhow stay off the radar and stay safe….

Report Post »I belive the term racial profiling is a bit of a misnomer – Cops are supposed to do “criminal profiling”. Generally, certain criminals fit a profile. This is not determined genetically by skin color, or any other genetic factor. Criminals may chose a certain way to dress. Like back when many gang members were sporting Oakland Raiders stuff. Not sure about your area, but down here in the Columbus, Ga area, it is commone to see a little newspaper type flyer at gas stations. This flyer showcases all the folks recently arrested, and lists the crimes they were arrested for. When you look for those arrested for drugs, it is amazing at how many are black males, with the long nappy braids (Jamaican look), and the baggy pants. Sure, there are some dudes who never commited a crime dressed this way, but without a doubt, this is tha attire for the drug dealing, gangster thug crowd. As a man, there is no way I am going to let any son of mine dress this way. If I am a cop, looking for dope peddlers, I am not going to look for asian women wearing pant-suits. The profile is not determined by race, it is determined by the criminal themselves. The criminal chose the attire. Like folks say, it is a free country. If you want to dress like a thug, and roll in a car that gets less gas mileage, has less braking ability, slow to accelerate, prone to broke rims, and play heathen music that violates lewdness laws, then get after it.

Criminal profiling is predicting potential criminals using similar characteristics from past criminal behavior who have been caught only. Therefore if you ever did have bias (racism) your characteristic will be skewed leading to an incorrect analysis of “characteristics”.
In ‘60’s hippies with long hair and bell bottoms smoking dope, doing every drug on Earth and humping every where at woodstock would be considered thugs, right? Should police arrest every person wearing bell bottoms at the time?
Sagging is a fad and generational problem. A cop targeting a certain group, criminal profiling, is lazy and since it is used by cops we can group all cops as lazy using the same logic correct? Profiling can be used on everyone. Encouragement of use will only lead to it being used on you.
Free choice is great. I drive a flat bed, no rubber band tires and my brakes work great when I stop and am chilling on my dirt road. If someone wants to pimp their ride their choice.
