India Mothers Accused in Honor Killing of Two Brides

NEW DELHI (AP) — Two Muslim mothers in a northern Indian town have been arrested on accusations they killed their daughters for dishonoring the family by eloping with Hindu men, police said Sunday.

Newlyweds Zahida, 19, and Husna, 26, were strangled when they returned home after getting married to men of their choice, said Anil Kumar Kusan, a police officer.

Marriages between Hindus and Muslims are not common in India and are frowned upon by both communities, although there are more instances of inter-religious marriages among the educated urban population.

Across India, many marriages are still arranged by families. But with the booming economy and more women entering the work force, such traditions are slowly giving way to love marriages.

However, centuries-old caste and community barriers still come into play, and there has been a spurt in “honor killings” in recent years across northern India.

Zahida and Husna were neighbors in Baghpat, a town in India’s Uttar Pradesh state, when they fell in love with two construction workers. They eloped and got married last week before returning home to make peace with their families, Kusan said.

The women belonged to Muslim families and their mothers, both widows, were furious, Kusan said.

Initial investigations showed that the mothers helped each other to strangle their daughters.

“We killed them because they brought shame to our community. How could they elope with Hindus? They deserved to die. We have no remorse,” Khatun, one of the mothers, was quoted as saying by the Indian Express newspaper after her arrest Friday. Khatun uses only one name.

Earlier this week, India’s Supreme Court recommended the death penalty for honor killings, calling the practice barbaric and feudal.

Most victims of such killings are young adults who fall in love or marry against their families’ wishes. In some cases, village councils order couples killed who marry outside their caste or religion.

While there are no official figures, an independent study found around 900 people are killed each year in India for defying their elders.

    Our dear leader is determined to court these same fanatics across the globe to help bring about the desired openborders fiasco and further enable more terrorists to enter the U.S. It’s quite obvious that his ego is now really beginning to shape his particular kind of insidiousness, as the more his opponents push back, his arguments become more infantile, cartoonish, and very bitter. I do not think for a minute he would wish to have us enslaved under sharia, but very willing to incorporate some kind of international law to be considered for those who do. His assosciation with the muslim bhood is very dangerous. His middle east policy is suicide. Impossible? Everything he has said is cloaked in dark un-truths with his clique getting larger and larger, so what is he capable of doing really?

    You people know anything outside the relm of the media.I have a best friend from the hindu/muslim clashes.in the 60s and 70s hindi women were MURDERED by muslim thugs during election seasons by being kidnaped and then taken to cane fields to be torchered by having sugarcane stalks shoved from there privates to throats!!!And the woman of choice were pregnant..Religon of peace my ass..Im locked and loaded..

    I can not figure this islam thing out!!!       @chris3.. don’t know where you got the idea BABYBOOMERS were spoiled? In our family we were anything BUT.. nor were my kids.. However..MY GRANDKIDS now that will be a generation THAT believes it’s all OWED to them.. their parents give them every new thing that comes out without having to work for it.. don’t know the reason behind this since they turned out fine not getting everything… I can say that because I am a baby boomer that got up in the morning to a COLD house (we didn‘t have forced air heat couldn’t afford it).. didn’t get to pick out the clothes we wanted we got what we could afford.. had the responsibility of taking care of my siblings.. FOR FREE.. didn’t go to college .. no money.. and we didn’t take government hand outs..one black and white T.V. that we weren’t allowed to watch but for an hour AFTER DINNER.. shared bedrooms..so WHICH baby boomers are you talking about??? I had to work after school so I missed WOODSTOCK.. and all the other 60′s stuff besides my dad would have kicked my rear.. and have no idea what went on till the 70‘s and 80’s when I was out on my own.. Besides the fact that OBAMA is NOT a baby boomer and he thinks the taxpayers should spoil him.. turn down their heat while he keeps his high (like he’s use to).. fancy dinners.. Hollywood types for private entertaining.. talk about being spoiled..

      Murder is not honorable in the least! That said, it speaks to the heart of islam – it’s murderous to all that stand in its way. Golda Meir was right abt it when she said that there would be peace when Arab (muslim) mothers loved their children more than they hated Jews. Islam teaches hate toward all others.

      @catb…You should have heard the defence that Muzzammil Hassan put up….At one point he somehow tryed to position himself as being like Ron Reagan and Gandi. His defence was based on that he feared for his life which didnt hold up to well after the jury saw the security tape from the station showing his wife walk thru the door and Hassan attacking her…stabbing her and cutting her head off with a knife. It was a no-brainer to put this guy away but it still took 2 years to come to trial and weeks of testimony. I think the jury only had it for a couple hours and they hung him.

      -Well, it appears to me that this will be our future here, too, if the borders aren‘t closed and the legal immigrants aren’t taught our laws and expectations of Americans. They are coming in, in droves. On a more personal note, to me, this is what one can expect of a GOD-less religion. Their GOD apparently requires no accountability for the lives of their fellow (wo)man. Their GOD apparently promotes killing for selfish, personal reasons. The first thing I thought when I reads this was, yeah, I bet it was their husbands who did it, and they were made to take the blame or die. (-But, just my imagination, I am sure!)       They are not “Honor” killings. Please call them for what they are, PRIDE killings. It has nothing to do with honor and everything to do with pride, one of the seven so called vices or deadly sins. It is good to be proud of things, your children’s accomplishments, your accomplishments, your family, or even your religious choices, however if your “pride” forces you to do a barbaric act like killing your own children, then you have taken pride to the point of vice/sin. May, at the end of their lives, those two mothers, receive a just reward for their actions in this life. May their two daughters also receive their own reward.

      It pains me to see these religious extremists do this over and over as if this is a good thing. Religious extremism makes me not want to live on this planet anymore.

      And the two mothers are widows. Sadly, the first thing I thought of, what happened to their husbands? Did they blow themselves up or did they die attacking the Hindus in some terrorist action?
