JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Disaster officials say the death toll from a tsunami off western Indonesia has climbed to 23 and scores of villagers are missing.
The 10-foot (three-meter) -high wave was triggered by a 7.7-magnitude quake, which struck 13 miles (20 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor late Monday.
It washed away hundreds of houses in two coastal villages on Pagai and Silabu, part of the remote and sparsely populated Mentawai island chain.
Ade Edward, a disaster management agency official, said Tuesday that casualty figures were just starting to trickle in. So far, 23 bodies have been found and at least 167 people were missing.
Indonesia is on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
Editor’s Note: The death toll is now said to be over 40 with nearly 400 missing.

Posted on October 26, 2010 at 2:03pmWhen my family and I were in Indonesia we were taken in by a Christian family. We lived on our sailboat off their backyard surrounded by muslims. Thank God for this family as they watched over us the whole time we were there and without our knowledge, had friends and relatives watching out for us whenever we went into town to market. It was a sad day when we said our ‘good byes’ sailing on to the island of Bali where we encountered a sunami while there. There was an underwater volcanic eruption (no warning) and while we were in the restaurant located on the beach, waves of water kept washing over the wall and into the restaurant picking up tables, chairs, cars that were parked outside, the band playing there, quit and we all scattered. We ran outside wading through waist-high waters clinging to one another making our way to the bus that brought us there and another wave picked up our bus and landed us in a ditch. Another wave picked us up and we floated back on to the road. We hopped out to help repair the engine and thankfully got her running and were on our way out of there.
The point of my story here is among the muslims were Christians and perhaps there were Christians living among the muslims in this remote part of Indonesia that was devastated. The other point I want to make is there are no warnings from underwater volcanoes and I doubt Indonesia has the $$ to get word out to those remote places to warn the people. Don‘t be too harsh on a country that has a population majority that seek ill will towards Israel and us because there are a minority living there that don’t.

Posted on October 26, 2010 at 12:36pmAfter the geologists called off the tsunami alert, there was another killer tsunami. Ever get the feeling our “scientists” are doing more harm than good? And doctors are required to have malpractice insurance…
Report Post »These people are dead because of scientists who are owned by politicians. We had plenty of warning on this one, and they called it off, and people died. Shameful.

Posted on October 26, 2010 at 8:26amWhat is it with these types of stories on this forum PEOPLE? Is the Blaza trying to become a Huffington Post. I do read the Huff because I am an open minded conservative. Plus, you got to hand to that sexy foreign lady, she did the Post right. I would love to have a beer with her.
Yes open minded conservatives know that compromise is the only way this great country can be greater. Compromise does not indicate you are weak. It means you are not brain washed; it means you are smart PEOPLE.

Posted on October 26, 2010 at 9:06amUnfortunately America does not have the luxury of compromise at this time… There is no compromise with those who hate this country… In 2012, when the U.S. has 300+ conservatives in the House, 60+ Senate seats, and the Oval Office, then we can compromise…
I am a Conservative, and whenever I’ve heard a phrase like “compromise is the only way this great country can be greater…”, it’s usually from either a liberal/regressive, or a squishy RINO… You say this like it is a fact…
An “open-minded” conservative sounds like someone who could compromise alright… Compromise their principles that is…
A conservative willing to compromise their principles is no conservative… Or maybe they’re one of those “little c” conservatives…
I’m not giving you a hard time this morning, but now is not the time for giving in, or going along…
I say, “Bring on the GRIDLOCK”…

p.s. “Monster” = great 60′s song by steppinwolf. Look up the lyrics. As relevant today as back then.
MONSTER – SUICIDE – AMERICA
From the 1970 release “Monster”
Words and music by John Kay, Jerry Edmonton, Nick St. Nicholas and Larry Byrom (Monster)
Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of kingdom and pope
Like good Christians, some would burn the witches
Later some got slaves to gather riches
But still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light
And once the ties with the crown had been broken
Westward in saddle and wagon it went
And ’til the railroad linked ocean to ocean
Many the lives which had come to an end
While we bullied, stole and bought our a homeland
We began the slaughter of the red man
But still from near and far to seek America T
hey came by thousands to court the wild
And she just patiently smiled and bore a child
To be their spirit and guiding light
The blue and grey they stomped it
They kicked it just like a dog
And when the war over
They stuffed it just like a hog
And though the past has it’s share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But it’s protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it’s a monster and will not obey
(Suicide)
The spirit was freedom and justice
And it’s keepers seem generous and kind
It’s leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won’t pay it no mind
‘Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it‘s all just an echo of what they’ve been told
Yeah, there’s a monster on the loose
It’s got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watchin’
Our cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin’ the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can’t understand
We don’t know how to mind our own business
‘Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who’s the winner
We can’t pay the cost
‘Cause there’s a monster on the loose
It’s got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching
(America)
Report Post »America where are you now?
Don’t you care about your sons and daughters?
Don’t you know we need you now
We can’t fight alone against the monster

Posted on October 26, 2010 at 12:48pmAre you kidding me? I hope they get hit again and again and again!
Indonesia is 90% Muslim and has harbored and funded terrorist cells and organizations. Not to mention they have allowed the killing of many Christians on their soil with no remorse or consequence. Christian places of worship have been shut down and terrorized out of existence there. Indonesia is an enemy of our western culture and way of life. No coexistence, only death to the infidel (thats you).
This Tsunami is merely a small punishment from God and hopefully he will continue such assaults on these animals, there and abroad. It would be even better if we could pick up his slack and finish the job. Wishful thinking of course.
