Indonesian Muslim Woman Publicly Caned for ‘Close Proximity’ With Man

It’s unclear what exactly she was doing, but when neighbors found 34-year-old Irdayanti Mukhtar in a bedroom with a man who was not her husband, her case was brought before the local shariah court in Jantho, Indonesia. Her crime? Being in “close proximity” with another man. Her punishment? Nine public lashes with a cane.

According to London’s Daily Mail, Mukhtar‘s case isn’t as cut-and-dry as it may first seem. She is reportedly in the process of divorcing her husband. And while she was found with another man, it’s unclear exactly what they were doing. Hence, the charge of being in “close proximity.”
Still, despite some shaky details, Mukhtar’s punishment was carried out in front of a cheering crowd. The Mail explains:
The harsh punishment was meted out in front of a crowd of 200 people outside the Al Munawwarah Mosque in Jantho, Indonesia.
The jeering crowd recorded the brutal beating on their mobile phones and camcorders and shouted for more beatings in the strict Muslim city.
Mukhtar had been sentenced to the punishment the previous day by a Sharia court where prosecutors said that she was guilty of being in ‘close proximity’ to another man.
Under Sharia law the offence carries a maximum beating of nine strokes with a cane or a minimum of three.
Neighbours had seen Mukhtar with the man and had barged in on her while the couple were in her bedroom, although it is unclear what they were actually doing.
The mob then dragged them to the local police station to be charged. [...]
Shortly after the caning on Friday Mukhtar passed out and had to be taken to hospital for treatment.
She was one of four people, including the man she was caught with, to be caned for extramarital affairs
But Mukhtar’s punishment may not have been limited to her public humiliation. According to some reports, she was molested by the crowd while the marched her to the police station. Police are investigating.
Caning is not uncommon in countries where shariah is common (such as Indonesia). A video posted on YouTube last fall purportedly shows a man and woman also being publicly caned. A news story attached to that video’s description says the two were found guilty of adultery:

I would have waited until the couple in question completed their planned commision of adultry so they could have faced a more strict punishment. Being too liberal with lawbreakers only encourages more lawbreaking. This is the kind of thing we need in te U.S. when the evangelical conservative Christian Republicans take control of Congress, the Presidency. and the Supreme Court. As far as this is concerned, if they can find, if true, the molesters, they should be put to the cane as well.
I don’t have a problem with corporal punishment as a rule. It is effective, efficient, and quickly over. Since there is pain, there is corrective incentive: “I won’t do that again!” You go through it, and it’s done. No unproductive imprisonment that costs taxpayer money. And the perpetrator gets to go right back to his/her job or duties, being a productive member of society. They don’t lose their job. So, it is a net gain, not a net drain for society.
Folks probably don’t remember what that kid said in Singapore, when asked if he would ever spray paint a car again. He said, “Not is Singapore man!”

Bad writing, but fortunately that does not stop many of the dumbest of you from jumping to false conclusions. Is there a clear link between caning and Islam? NO! In fact, pretty much the only thing that ties together countries that officially sanction caning as a punishment is that they were all subject to British colonialism at some point or another. Yes, Indonesia is a Muslim country, and Malaysia has a majority Muslim population, and they cane people there. Except they also commonly cane people in Singapore and Thailand, which are NOT Muslim countries. They also cane people in many non-Muslim African countries, and in a few countries in the Caribbean.
Clearly this woman being caned is a terrible thing, but the article draws a false connections between the practice of caning and Islam. Everyone, please stop being so stupid.

I have little problem with caning of REAL offenses, but the fact that they could use a charge such as “close proximity to a man” shows the totalitarian nature of sharia law and its encouragement of violent supression of freedom.

First, this story wrenches everyone’s heart who still has one, but enough of the emotional rants. Second, hatred is not combated with more hatred….if we despise our enemies, then how are we any better than the Islamic extremists or Pharisees? Third, this Islamico fellow probably is not a Muslim anyway. His only agenda is to stir contention and diffuse misinformation. He gets paid for his services and molds his argument, personal history, and even user ID to fit the story. Ignore such people, and keep your arguments cogent and insightful and faith-promoting. Emotional rhetoric won’t serve to combat untruths and conquer an equally emotion-filled enemy. Light and truth and faith will win out.
