Indonesian Muslims Condemn Lady Gaga Concert: ‘Intended to Destroy the Nation’s Morality’

Indonesian Muslim Leaders Condemn Lady Gaga Concert Pop star Lady Gaga may have millions of fans across the globe, but some Islamic leaders in Indonesia cannot be counted among them.

The Jakarta Globe is reporting that the singer has drawn the ire of Muslim leaders in the Southeast Asian country after her concert, which is bound to be provocative, sold out in less than two hours.

The June 3 performance that has religious leaders up in arms is scheduled to take place at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta, Indonesia. After selling 25,000 tickets, Lady Gaga attracted the attention of Indonesian Council of Ulema (ICU) chairman Cholil Ridwan, who said, “[The concert is] intended to destroy the nation’s morality.”

“She is from the West, and she often shows her aurat [private parts of the body] when performing,” the chairman continued, going on to state his worry that Western singers, like Lady Gaga, have a negative influence over Indonesian youths. It may be time, he maintained, for these “cultural attacks to end.

Indonesian Muslim Leaders Condemn Lady Gaga Concert The ICU is a body that governs relations between the Indonesian government and the religious community. Ridwan admitted to never seeing the singer perform and that he merely knows of her reputation from learning information from others.

The Global Post adds:

Chairman Cholil Ridwan, of the influential Indonesian Council of Ulema, is honoring the rich Indonesian-Malaysian tradition of condemning Western pop stars for besmirching religious piety on their soil.

Past performers accused of soiling youthful morality include Kelly Clarkson, Rihanna, Linkin Park, Avril Lavigne and — just recently in Malaysia – Erykah Badu.

An imam also weighed in on the controversy. Although Imam Ali Mustafa Yaqub said that Lady Gaga isn’t “haram” (forbidden by Islamic law), watching her performances is. Viewing a women who is barely clothed, Yaqub explained, is not permitted under Muslim law.

“Perform naked only in front of your husband,” he said.

  Not at all. I am saying that Christians as individuals should strive to be more like Jesus in their choices, living in the extraordinary power of God’s grace, distinguishing themselves with good living and excellence, turning away from what God identifies as sin.
  
  No need for “bans” or “prohibitions” or mandates from anyone. Entertainers like Gaga just won’t make any money from me.

  The last thing in all this world that I‘m going to do is accept a lecture on morality by a bunch of Religionists who think it’s hunky-dory to marry little girls, beat your wives (plural), fly planes into skyscrapers, kidnap and rape the daughters of people of faith traditions different from your own, then burn down their former houses of worship, and strap on bomb vests to wander into crowds of people who don’t happen to pray the way you say to blow themselves up and take the “infidels” with them.

  I have never heard her music BECAUSE her looks offend my senses and I AM A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST and the Holy Spirit tells me to NOT support her in any way.   You would be wise to not be so quick as to judge the heart of even someone with the outward signs of Lady Gaga as a Christian or not. While I would agree she does not present a very moral picture, and you are free to criticize her actions as unGodly, I am sure you will agree it is GOD who will judge her heart as either of faith or not.

  This is not a one-time event. The Holy Spirit is CONTINALLY working through the heart of the believer. Perhaps you have heard of the LAW which continues to condemn us as sinners, and the GOSPEL that continues to assure us of forgiveness from the sins we commit?…and how BOTH are irrelevant without the other? We ALL sin and fall short of the glory of God, and even BELIEVERS are not the exception. The difference is, those of faith are given power through the Holy Spirit to confess this sin, repent/turn, and follow God’s will in our lives. Regardless it is done ALL through the power and glory of God, and we need only not reject God’s gift of grace. As sinful humans we are utterly helpless to do anything other than offend God by our own reason or strength, and therefore ONLY through Christ have we the hope to live eternally.

  Perhaps people are familiar with the passage from Matt. 15 where Jesus is saying, “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”
  
  Lady Gaga (or anyone else) does not MAKE someone immoral, since from Christ’s own words, being immoral comes out of one’s OWN heart, not what one puts into the body…whether that be food or music from a pop artist that has the exact same beat in EVERY song. Not that we should wallow in what is unGodly and expect to come out very “moral”, but whether you are moral or not depends on YOU and YOUR thoughts and actions, and NOT that of Lady Gaga or anyone else.

  While I agree very much that we really don‘t know what is in someone’s heart, I think it is fair to say that we are to use God-given wisdom to know what is wholesome for the soul, and what is vile. Would Jesus tell His disciples (us) that it is OK to attend her concerts and enjoy the display?

  Actually, I’m not into walking around and pointing fingers at all the things other Christians are doing wrong, because in part, I agree with you. The Holy Spirit may be working on them. But surely, you agree that we can stand boldly on truth and not some watered down secular rule of not being able to say that anything around is is wrong- “it is just different”. Personally, I am sick of the political correctness, and believe that Jesus Christ is happy with us when we recognise that which harms the soul, warn others and stay away from it ourselves. I think going to a Gaga concert applies here.

  5. Get involved in your community so you can turn the hearts of men, as God directs.
  
  THIS IS ALL YOU CAN DO AND NOTHING MORE UNLESS GOD GIVES YOU INSTRUCTIONS.

This information was made apparent when Anwar Al Alaki was spotted in a flower hibjab at a Pink concert in Hakarta.
