Injured Ore. Hunter Survives on Beef Jerky for 4 Days

BEND, Ore. (The Blaze/AP) — An elk hunter is recovering after spending four days and three nights stranded in a central Oregon forest with just a small bag of beef jerky to sustain him.

KTVZ-TV reports 48-year-old Alan Hewitt, a former Marine from Prineville, Ore., went elk hunting on horseback on Thanksgiving but was injured in a fall.

He endured freezing temperatures in the Ochoco National Forest and survived on the beef jerky until two men found him Sunday.

Darrel Hover, of Bend, and his father thought they saw a red backpack in the snow. It was Hewitt. They took him to a hospital in Bend, about 120 miles southeast of Portland.

“He was shivering, disoriented, almost catatonic and in need of help,” Hover said Wednesday.

The Crook County sheriff‘s office rescued Hewitt’s two horses.

A “FORMER MARINE”? There is no such thing. Once a Marine, always a Marine!

Could this be a headline from the not to near future. A slight change to the story line,” Oregon family survives on stale bread and melted ice water inside there home, and were discovered by the bank serving a forecloser notice. They have been relocated by the government.”

It’s a positive attititude. Want to survive, don’t lay down and die! Those are some tough old boys there in Jefferson County, Oregon. God Bless him. I’ll bet his family all got what they wanted for Christmas.

Exactly what I was thinking. I guess being a “former Marine” he thought he could do without a partner and look where it got him. Heck, I fell and busted my head in my driveway and after nobody drove by for several minutes I decided I better try to get help because blood was covering the drive. Old dumb bunny me had a cell phone in both pockets but forgot I had them. I’m glad he was found and I hope he learned his lesson. May God keep you in the palm of his mighty hand young man. May God Bless.

You’re not going to starve in four days anyway. He’d have survived even without the jerky. Jerky is an outstanding survival food though.

He’s an elk hunter though, why not elk jerky instead of beef? Elk jerky now that’s some good stuff.

Hunting here in northern minnesota,,,I don’t use the GPS, but I NEVER leave camp without a lighter and compass in my pants pocket, NEVER. That goes for areas I know like the back of my hand-you never know. I’ve been stranded in snow storms while hunting and damned glad I had enough to keep me alive an warm.

Most of the people I know have a good enough sense of direction that they dont need a GPS. That is one danger of being on horseback though, you need to pay more attention to where you are. I have known people who got turned around because they weren’t paying attention to where the horse was going.
