Inmate Steps in to Break up Guards’ Food Fight

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Talk about a role-reversal: Two New York jail guards are in trouble after an inmate stepped in to break up their fight over food.

Erie County Undersheriff Mark Wipperman says both corrections officers are suspended with pay after what he calls an “embarrassment.”

The inmate required medical attention but Wipperman says privacy laws prevent him from disclosing his injuries. He says the inmate got between the unarmed guards because he didn’t want either to get fired.

He wouldn’t confirm a Buffalo News report that the April 21 bout started over a bag of chips. It happened at Erie County Correctional Facility in a dorm-like building.

Wipperman identified the officers as Lawrence Mule, a 26-year veteran, and James Conlin, who was hired 29 years ago. A message with the officers‘ union wasn’t immediately returned.

Ever been to jail? Prison? I have. I hope both of these bottom feeders die horrible deaths. Jail guards are the most abusive, arrogant, antagonistic, bullying, civil rights violation pieces of crap on the planet… a hot fire poker up the a@@ for all of them!!

Spent 20 years working in Corrections and yes sometimes good people wind up in jail for doing stupid things and all too often stupid people are allowed to be come guards. I have seen things similar to this happen also.

I was a Correctional Officer for a couple of years, then I worked in administration for the Sheriff’s Office for a couple more. I can say from my experience there’s not always a big difference between the inmates and the lazy slugs who are supposed to be watching them.

Difficult sometimes to tell which is the guard and which the inmate, thus is the case on this story.

If a child was injured in the midst of 2 teachers fighting, I would expect the 2 teachers to get an unpaid break. Seasoned unarmed officiers can’t keep their cool enough to keep an inmate safe? and you think we need to wait until the supervisors and union liasons have their speak before they miss some pay?

and i wondedr why ny taxes are soo friggin high.they should be fired immediately for dereliction of duty, the inmate should receive some time off for being the adult in the room.the unions will drag this out for years and the taxpayers will continue to pay wages and dues for such said years.I’m goin down texas way or up to alaska.had enough.

Sounds to me that they have been in the union long enough to think the rules don’t apply to them. I know most states are having to face budget cutbacks and many experienced officers in our state (not NY) are being offered early retirement. How much do you want to bet these officers get their buy out?

What’s the sentence for assault? They don’t even lose pay/

i think its a stupid word. makes it sound like they are off to summer camp to me. like they are mates with each other meaning friends. they are prisoners there for something they did to break the law, at least most of them are there for that. every once and a while we do hear about someone wrongfully convicted. i know other people think this is a non issue and they may be right, but as for me i will be calling them prisoners.

This I have to admit is a first for me to hear about; the inmate breaks up the fight among the guards and the officers are suspended – with pay!!! They both should be without pay until the investigation is done, and the unions be sent to the bottom of the oceanic abyssal planes.

Indeed, and even with a witness there would be cause – from the unions point of view, to deny all of the charges against any officer involved.

This is reminiscent of something that happened here. A teacher who exposed some students to standardized testing answers before the actual test, was “forced” to take a days suspension, with pay, as “punishment” for the transgresion…I wish I could be “punished” like that…

They are suspended WITH PAY while the investigation is ON GOING. Why would you suspend them WITHOUT pay before you have completed the investigation? What if you were one of the officers, and you were in the fight in a self-defense position. Would you want to be docked pay for defending yourself? The article doesn’t say who started it, how long it lasted, and what the fight really consisted of. So, why would they suspend them without pay before they know the answers to these questions? Great job judging a situation without knowing all the facts.

Suspension with pay …… Sounds like the unions take care of their own no matter what. If any of my people are caught fighting on the job, they both go home WITHOUT pay for a day. When they return, the at fault person gets an extra day off again, no pay. If I am not ale to determine who started it, both, no pay another day. It gets their attention & curtails any controversy. Work together, resolve issues, or your pocket will be a little light that week.
