Inside SEAL Team Six OBL Raid: Osama Had ‘Trademark AK-47′ in Room During Raid

WASHINGTON (AP) — So much could have gone wrong as SEAL Team Six swept over Pakistan’s dark landscape, dropped down ropes into a compound lined by wall after wall, exchanged gunfire and confronted “Geronimo” face to face. The vital things went right.

Just about every contingency the 25 commandos trained for came at them, rapidly, chaotically and dangerously, in their lunge for Osama bin Laden.

They had acted on the best intelligence the U.S. had ever had on bin Laden’s whereabouts since he slipped away in the mountains of Tora Bora just under a decade ago. But it was guesswork, too, with the commandos’ lives, a president‘s reputation and a nation’s prestige riding on the outcome.

Was the man once seen pacing the compound’s courtyard really bin Laden, as it appeared to American eyes? That was just one unknown.

In short, the U.S. had no direct evidence that bin Laden would be there during the assault – or indeed had ever been there. Obama put the raiders in motion on the “pretty good chance” they would find their man, as CIA Director Leon Panetta, who was overseeing the operation back in Washington, put it.

Days after the attack, the administration has fleshed out a reconstruction that is probably more accurate than its initial, flawed telling. More information has been gleaned from the commandos themselves, now back at their home base outside Virginia Beach, Va. Some dust has settled.

But there remains no independent or competing account to the administration’s story as yet. The reconstruction comes largely from Panetta, White House spokesman Jay Carney and Obama’s counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan. Some of their early details proved unreliable.

The only other direct witnesses are the compound’s occupants, now in Pakistani custody and, for now, out of reach to everyone else.

Information gaps exist in the official account. Among them: how many armed defenders the raiders encountered, who shot at whom, why none of the compound’s survivors was taken away by the Americans, and how many commandos stormed bin Laden’s room. It may never be known which commando, or two, killed bin Laden with shots to his head and chest.

The question of exactly what the unarmed bin Laden did to prompt the SEALs to kill rather than capture him has not been settled. However, officials speaking anonymously told The Associated Press that bin Laden appeared to be lunging for a weapon in a room that contained his trademark AK-47 assault rifle and side arms. Still, to some in government and intelligence circles, the operation bore the hallmarks of a pure kill mission despite statements from officials that bin Laden would have been taken alive if he had surrendered.

On one point, however, there has been no inconsistency, revision or challenge: The raiders of Team Six made good on their “pretty good chance” and got safely away in a bold mission accomplished.

Late last week, Panetta got the word from the White House that Obama was giving the green light for the raid. Other options, including the idea of “just blowing the place up” from a B-2 bomber, had been discarded, he said. The president’s order soon followed.

Obama directed Panetta to proceed under Title 50, meaning this would be a covert operation.

Operational control fell to Adm. William McRaven, head of the Joint Special Operations Command, who is stationed in Afghanistan. Panetta said: “My instructions to Admiral McRaven were, `Admiral, go in and get bin Laden. And if he’s not there, get the hell out.’”

Team Six was ready.

Its members had rehearsed the assault many times – two or three times a night in Afghanistan, Panetta said. The U.S. had a strong sense for at least several months that bin Laden might be at the compound, which Americans had been monitoring for months longer than that.

Intelligence officials watched so closely that they saw a family’s clothes on the third floor balcony and, at one point, a man resembling bin Laden out in the courtyard, Panetta said. They surmised bin Laden and his “hidden family” lived on the second and third floors, because his trusted courier – who had unwittingly drawn the U.S. to this unlikely hideout – occupied the first floor, with his brother in a guesthouse.

When two Black Hawk helicopters carrying the commandos left Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, stopping in Jalalabad before crossing over into Pakistan on their way to Abbottabad, the operation invited its first risk. Pakistani authorities, kept in the dark about the U.S. mission in their territory, might spot the choppers and engage them.

But the strong Pakistani military presence in Abbottabad, a garrison city with a military academy near the compound, provided a cover of sorts for the Americans. No one would be particularly surprised to hear choppers flying at night.

Reaching their target, the raiders suddenly had to improvise.

Their plan to place a rappelling team on the roof with a second team dropping into the courtyard was jettisoned when one of the helicopters, its blades clawing at hot, too-thin air, had to put down hard. Both choppers landed in the courtyard, behind one ring of walls with more to go.

That was just one of the split-second decisions the SEALs had to make in the lair of al-Qaida’s leader.

Gunfire erupted, as the 25 commandos on the ground surely had expected and might even have started.

But the compound was also populated with more than two dozen children and women, according to the U.S. The raiders faced life-and-death calls – their own lives and those of the compound’s inhabitants – about who was lethal and who was just in their way. That line was not obvious. The SEALs went in with the assumption that some of those they encountered might be wearing explosive suicide vests.

Back at the White House and at a CIA command center, officials including Obama had monitored the operation to this point, apparently on TV monitors although the administration won’t say. Special forces are typically outfitted with video.

But when the strike force actually entered the compound, Panetta said, 20 or 25 minutes elapsed when “we really didn’t know just exactly what was going on.”

A violent melee was going on, key details still largely a mystery.

The raiders trying to get into the house breached three or four walls, Panetta said, not specifying whether they scaled them or blew holes.

On the first floor, the SEALs killed the courier and his brother, and the courier’s wife died in crossfire. They shot open some doors.

They then swept upstairs and burst into a third floor room, entering one at a time, said Carney. There all the U.S. intelligence, the surmising and the guesswork paid off.

Bin Laden’s wife charged at the SEALs, crying her husband’s name at one point. They shot her in the calf. Officials told AP that one SEAL grabbed a woman, fearing she might be wearing a suicide vest, and pulled her away from his team. Whether that was bin Laden’s wife has not been confirmed.

Also in the room were bin Laden and a son.

The first bullet struck bin Laden in the chest. The second struck above his left eye, blowing away part of his skull.

It is not confirmed whether the shots came from one commando, two or in a spray of gunfire.

The son was shot dead in that room, too.

After the nerve-wracking, nearly half-hour gap in information from the scene, Washington got word that “Geronimo” was killed in action.

The raiders’ work was not done.

They quickly swept the compound, retrieving possibly crucial records on the operations of al-Qaida.

They destroyed the chopper that gave them trouble. This renewed worries that Pakistani authorities would discover the mission prematurely. Neighbors certainly noticed.

“We had to blow the helicopter,” Panetta said, “and that probably woke up a lot of people, including the Pakistanis.”

The non-combatants, their hands bound with plastic ties as the operation unfolded, were left for Pakistani officials to round up.

About 10 days before the raid, Obama was briefed on the plan. It included keeping two backup helicopters just outside Pakistani airspace in case something went wrong. But Obama felt that was risky. If the SEALs needed help, they couldn’t afford to wait for backup.

He said the operation needed a plan in case the SEALs had to fight their way out. So two Chinooks were sent into Pakistani airspace, loaded with backup teams, just in case. One of those Chinooks landed in the compound after the Black Hawk became inoperable.

The raiders scrambled aboard the remaining Black Hawk and a Chinook, bin Laden’s body with them, and flew to the USS Carl Vinson in the North Arabian Sea. The ground operation had taken about 40 minutes.

Only after the Americans left the area was Pakistan informed of what had happened on its territory.

Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen called Pakistani Army chief Ashfaq Kayani to tell him that an operation he had not known about was complete, a U.S. official told AP. Panetta called his Pakistani counterpart shortly afterward.

Mere hours after the operation, before most of the world knew bin Laden was found and killed, his body was buried at sea.

    no tapes, no body, no DNA ….they said that it was done in Afganistan …..who knows? we just must belive anything they say…..so maybe he is dead..maybe he was dead before they arrived or maybe he was diying on his bed due to kidney falure…..maybe he was going to be dead in 74 hours because of his kindney falure..who knows what the truth is …..

    who did the DNA in AFganistan? no tapes, no photos. 45 minutes of horable funeral for whom? all of that – raid so no one can see any prove of anythig…….this whole thing is very weird….we don’t trust obama …I think they are hididng the fact that this guy was almost dead…on his own…his kidney were not working….it looks as obama got there in a rigth moment just befor osama die on his own in his bed….the whole raid stage for a diying osama so obama can claim victory and therefore inhance his chance with stupid Amerian people that should never trust him to vote for him again so he can finish us up complitely ….obama needs 4 more years to fundamentally change USA into Cuba like regim ! and marshal law……obama’s intentions are to be in White house for next 30 years…obama had honorable funeral planned for asama – 45 minutes in arabic laugage by muslim cleric for osama bin laden who hussein obama said is nto even muslim.

    I sure would like to see the picture of UBL dead, probably for the same reason that they’ve decided not to show it. I’ve heard several descriptions now from those that have supposedly seen it, (the real one, not the fake floating around the internet) describing the photo as showing a “large gaping hole in the forehead over the left eye socket” with brain matter coming out of the hole, and the left eye missing from the eye socket. Now, it doesn’t HAVE to be, but from my experience it seems that what they are actually describing is an exit wound. Normally the entrance wound would be a small, caliber size wound. That would lead someone to believe that he was shot in the head from somewhere behind. Perhaps THAT‘s what they don’t want seen, since it might “imply” an execution, which some may accuse. (But it is also quite possible that UBL turned to grab for a gun, and therefore was shot in the back of the head.)

    That said, a single photo would certainly not be definitive; normally it would require a full examination of the body, but a photos of the sides and back of the head would give more information. Also, a large gaping wound could have been caused on entry if the weapon used was a shotgun, but those are normally only used for breaching doors and such, and in this case would not probably be carried (but it is still possible). Releasing a photo though, that if it is as described, may just open up a new “can of worms”, and pose more questions than it answers

    No mention of the quick DNA sample and when they took it. Kind of ridiculous they are saying they spent more time on his 45 minute burial service than it took for the whole operation by the Seal Team. I believe it was a very risky situation for the Seals and I commend them, but I still don’t believe much if anything I am hearing about what really went down from the press. I know the Seal Team if told will be sworn to secrecy, so Obama can lie all he wants, but we don’t have to believe him and hope most us realize that in 2012.

    It is a AK74, it shoots 5.45X39mm not an AK 47that shoots 7.62X39mm. The brown mag is a dead give away.

      The brown mag means nothing. AKM and AK-47 have similar mags that have been manufactured. The curvature of the magazine is much less than the 47 as the cartridge is smaller. This magazine is a 45 round 5.45×39. At least from the angle thats how it looks. If SEALS can’t keep his body as a trophy…..why not his gun?

    Sounds like he didn’t really need his dialysis machine anymore, so I‘d imagine they wouldn’t be too concerned about it. If he was in shape to use one, I’m sure the U.S. Navy would have made one available at their earliest convenience. It would be nice if they recovered his AK-17 as that would make a nice fund-raiser on eBAY! (Can you imagine?) I thought they took him back to Afghanistan first, then to the carrier (it’s a bit of a ride to the Indian Ocean). I wonder if they buried him with his ‘cab fare’ (or gas money)! After Mullen and Panetta made their ‘courtesy’ calls, I wonder if they called the two numbers bin Laden had on his robe (maybe to his lawyer and insurance agent) ?

    Reading the details of this incredible feat makes me proud to be an American! The men and women who serve in our military are heros, especially these SEAL Team Six.

    I only wish Sr. Airman Mark Forester could have been the one that called in an airstrike from the hills of Afghanistan that ultimately killed that pig. That was his aim, but God didn’t have it that way. Just give him hell now on the other side, Forester!! We got him and now he’s yours, bromigo!!! Go Tide!!!

      @offmymeds, close but not close enough, you know he heard all the helicopters fly above the compound, i am just wondering what they were doing ,play camel cards ,you would think that everyone would have been armed,but thank god they weren’t and all of brave soldiers made it back home to love ones safe, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

    Osama Bin Laden had his Trademark AK-47 with him, but yet – was unarmed when he was killed? All of this – AFTER the SEaL team inserted. I understand the silent kills, but I can’t imagine someone like OBL being that complacent given that he is/was the #1 most wanted terrorist in the entire world.

      The initial report said that he fired at the SEAL, and the SEAL returned fire with a shot to his head. I don’t know why they want us to think he was not armed. Sounds a bit sinister to me.

      When I first read the headline I thought it was Obama with his iconic AK47, now that made sense to me. After reading the story I came away with even more questions about the tall tale this is turning out to be, credibility be damned should be this administrations motto. OH, that and I think Obama does favor the AK47.

      Besides the fact that his “compound” was built within spitting distance of the Pakistani military academy, if you check the various Google maps of the area he is literally kitty-korner to the town hospital. They were neighbors. I have a feeling that you can’t swing a dead cat over your head in Abbottabad without hitting someone who knew where Osama was, and they probably all had him over for tea and dialysis at some point to boot.

    Why have this raid and put the SEAL team in if you are not going to show OBL dead? Why not just bomb the compound? So why not show the photo or video? .. Panetta says there isn’t a video .. where was Panetta when they were watching the raid?

    Each announcement leads to more questions.

    45 minute Muslim burial ceremony for someone we have been told over and over again by the left was NOT a Muslim?

      Dearest Geithner gave us three more weeks (May 16th) to get the ransom together. He’s also come up with all sorts of schemes to make a bigger mess of it all.

      Boehner has been in tears over it all and is trying like hades to gather the two trillion demand. He’s asking all his friends…it’s looking like he has many.

      Cavuto says we’re screwed, the Ryan plan isn’t going to cut the deficit. I don‘t think we have a chance in L until elections and even that’s questionable–that conservatives can take it, or that the candidates will do what they *promised*.

      Sometimes I think our best hope is for the whole thing to go kaput.

      I could understand that if there weren’t so many contradictions with appeasing the sensibilities of Muslims.

      We first had Abu Ghraib that just had to be out there…

      Then when Obama took office, they were straight out of the gate going after Gitmo, charge CIA folk for torture, and they were going to try those sensitive Muslims at at civilian trials, not military tribunals.

      Even after the OBL take-down, Holder STILL won’t let go of his bone–watch out CIA agents!

      Then of course there was that recent Rolling Stones “The Kill Team” article– full of nasty pictures/video of ‘innocent civilians’ .

      Then we have everybody and his brother making a big story out of some hayseed preacher dude burning a koran. Why?

      Tell me that if Obama and friends can ring-up some rinky-dink paper in Ca, to remove some comment about the flotus, smack down a reporter in San Fran but they couldn’t try and temper that story from The Rolling Stones?

      This WH could give a fiddlers fart about upsetting the Muslims but for whatever reason, they use this excuse. Ethics are lost on this WH, holding back the photo serves them *somehow* and I can’t venture a gue

      I am enjoying this more and more. All the scrambling to present (spin) the story just right. If ever a story needs no spin, it’s this one! But the great intellectuals we have running the White House PR show are on a great mission control mission.

      There was a gun battle.

      The SEALS had silencers but if they were fired at by the three Jihadist this would have alerted Bin Laden. He was a combat veteran and going room to room takes time, is noisy. This is all turning too suspicious the more we hear. If they blew holes in walls Reuters would have photos of those too.????? Now they had prisoners, but took NONE. ?????? it is sad that WE THE PEOPLE do not TRUST our OWN government or what we see on the Government controlled Media. As far as we know this site could be too!!! I still believe the “Compound” was actually a Prison and Bin Laden was under HOUSE arrest by the Paki’s. Pakistan has more Jihadist/ Terroist bombings DAILY than any other country in the world!!!! They have NO freedoms or civil rights. Everyone is being WATCHED !!!!

      The administration decided to run a victory lap before all of the facts trickled in. They are a bunch of children. Now, the facts are messing up the story, so they are throwing a tantrum with the press and the public.

      I’m waiting for Democrat talking points to start saying that anyone who wants to see the bin Laden death photos are racists. Just wait for it.

      Meanwhile, jobless claims jump during our wonderful recovery (the recession is over because of all the wonderful things President Obama has done), and the administration went against EVERYTHING it supposedly stood for in the execution of the misnamed War on Terror.

      This administration needs an enema. They are so inconsistent in following up their own words with actions when it comes to transparency.
      I just read on Drudgereport.com that Obama want us all to gat a chip installed in our cars so they tax tax us the number of miles we drive. This isn’t about proper taxing, we get that taken from us already in the tax we pay at the pump.       Sorry to rain on your hatred parade here, but you need learn a new expression: “The fog of war.” That’s, a phrase used to describe difficulty in determining facts amid the chaos surrounding warfare or crisis.

      The administration spoke about what happened only hours after it took place a half a world away. And look at how the information flows. You’ve got 24 seals, in 24 different places who had 24 different perceptions of events. They feed that information into one or several Seals, who communicate that info to someone or several people in Afghanistan, who relay that information to someone in Washington, who then told the President and his staff. At each step there are conflicting reports and misunderstandings of what was said or was meant. From the compound to the President, the information must have passed through three or four groups of people. Folks, that’s the fog of war. Conflicting stories come up whenever two people see the same thing. You encounter that every day of your life.

      Of course, to you, the conflicting stories mean people are lying, trying to appease Muslims or whatever because your hatred is such that it colors your every thought, but it’s simply the fog of war.

      As far as this nonsense about whether or not Bin Laden was resisting, the Seals must have assumed that the rooms or people were rigged with bombs, as Bin Laden had said he’d never be taken alive. If he’d done anything but raise his hands, they should have shot him. And th

      I don’t care much for all the speculation, I‘m glad he’s dead, mission accomplished , these highly trained men put their life on the line and our Nation’s military reputation also. I would assume they made the best choices at the time to do what they did. All the backtracking here at home by Obama has made Obama look inept allowing theories to be flung around, and it is worse then the picture being shown in my opinion. ……I’m for the Pic being shown….show it !

      As I posted yesterday in a number of stories on this site. The more you read, remember the truth will set you free. Seems all the other stories have disappeared since yesterday.
      It happened like this:
      OBL sitting in his upstairs bedroom reading the Koran. He summons his wife, mistress and asks if they are going deaf. They question his motive and he reply’s…………………is that a friggin noiseless Blackhawk that just landed in my yard or it must have been a noiseless flying saucer.
      The real reason I ask, I need that section in the Koran that instructs me on what to do before I see my 72 virgins. Before they kill me; you stand in front of me so they kill you first.
      All the while this is beamed back to Washington via space age wireless television. And there the conversation is; remember, this did not happen.       Once again, Brother JZS has explained to us what really is the problem here–it’s like one big game of “telephone!” remember that game where you whisper a message from ear to ear and it’s totally goofy by the time it gets to the last person? Well, that‘s all that’s happened here! Except that we now know that grownups call this game “The Fog of War…..” Ooooh….Sounds like a video game to me.

      there was a video of the outside…the Predator drones and the over watch Chinooks…there was not a video once the SEALs breached the main compound and entered the building…
      i am sure that Panetta was speaking about there not being a video of the actually interior raid and killing of UBL….

      check out this site…I believe that this recounting of events if more accurate even then what the Blaze has posted here or what you could piece together from all the different versions out of Washington DC…
