Inside the Gingrich Campaign Implosion — Daily Beast Exposes the Details

A day after Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign imploded when his senior staff quit along with numerous top aides in crucial primary states, the Daily Beast has pieced together the details of how it all happened. And boy is it interesting.

Chief among the outlet‘s findings is that staffers couldn’t stand Gingrich’s “rogue” tendencies, many questioned the candidate’s commitment, and Gingrich’s wife was not a fan of the long campaign hours. With those issues brewing, the “final straw” came when Gingrich decided to take a break and go on a two-week cruise to the Mediterranean. When he returned, everything came crumbling down.

Here‘s an excerpt from the Daily Beast’s report:

The decisive moment came in a meeting at Gingrich’s Washington, D.C. office between the candidate and his top two operatives, campaign manager Rob Johnson and strategist Sam Dawson, who had hoped to convince Gingrich that his approach as a candidate—which one insider described as “appalling”—needed a drastic transformation. When Gingrich did not agree, Johnson and Dawson said they were done.

[..]

Almost from the start, Gingich’s campaign team had fretted that their candidate lacked the patience and discipline to accommodate himself to the exacting process of running a presidential campaign. The first sign of his inclination to go rogue was his May 15 appearance on the NBC broadcast, “Meet the Press,” during which he entangled himself in a controversy over the House Republican budget plan authored by Rep. Paul Ryan, which he criticized as “right-wing social engineering.” The Ryan plan has become Republican orthodoxy, and Gingrich found himself having to explain, and then apologize for, his remarks.

One Gingrich staffer, no longer with the campaign, noted today that the “Meet the Press” appearance, which came just four days after Gingrich announced his candidacy, was booked by Gingrich himself—and was hardly the ideal venue for a candidate trying to win conservative hearts.

The final straw for some in the campaign was Gingrich’s decision to suddenly absent himself from the fray earlier this month to take a luxury Greek cruise with his wife, Callista—an odyssey one Gingrich insider called, “the Greek tragedy.” Some on Gingrich’s campaign staff had strongly urged the candidate not to abandon the field for an opulent vacation.

Gingrich’s insistence on taking the cruise reflected the deep disconnect between his staff’s idea of what was required to win the nomination, and Gingrich’s own. Gingrich sometimes “seemed almost annoyed at the process,” one top staffer said.

Some of the blame for that disconnect has been laid at the feet of Callista Gingrich, who didn’t appreciate the demands that a presidential campaign places upon the candidate and his family. “It’s how much time that his wife thinks that he should spend on this,” the staffer said. “It’s not a hobby. This is a full-time, 80-hour-a-week job.”

He never had a chance… he’s a policy guy, not an executive leader type that we need for President. He doesn’t have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely to the little guy–this is very evident in every interview.

Congressmen and Senators, for the most part, do not have the skills necessary to be good Presidents. They are much better at the Washington political game than effective leadership.

Just another privileged elite politician who thinks he will just do what he wants and the people with short memories will just hand him the nomination because of who he is. When are they going to learn that the lights are on and we are home and will see through (hopefully most) of the smoke and mirrors. His staff realized he has not figured it out and jumped from the sinking ship before it left the harbor.

Newt is a lot of things, many assets as a thinker, but he is not, was not, will never be a presidential leader. Leaders aren’t groomed, picked, grown, or otherwise cultivated….they RISE and LEAD. They are clear in saying what they mean the first time…they don’t need to constantly try to tell us what they really meant. GET OUT NEWT, there’s already too much background noise, the republic is dying and you’re part of the problem.

How do you know she whined and how do you know she’s selfish? It always helps to have the wife on board for any decision a man makes. Life is much simpler that way. I’m also sure that she knew what she was getting herself into. Politician or no politician, anyone who knows that their life is about to be turned into a living hell of rubber chicken dinners and late hours, would want some quality time together. One more thought — didn’t Jesus go out into the desert, right after his baptism, for forty days and nights to prepare for his public ministry? Answer? Yes! So give Newt and Callista a break, even if you can’t support him as a presidential candidate.

It‘s going to be a long campaign and it’s best for him to get away with his wife now and try to settle her feelings about the campaign than to do it later. RINO? If Rick Perry is a RINO, there is no such thing as a real Republican. Perry has been governor for almost 11 years, and sure enough he’s done some things not every conservative agreed with. To his credit, he reversed himself on some of these things (Trans-Texas Corridor) and he allowed a bill to pass reversing his executive order that mandated HPV vaccinations. Every time the conservative base objected, Perry did the right thing. He doesn’t back down to liberals. As far as the border goes, Perry is for more manpower and technology to patrol the border, he’s battling “sanctuary cities” in the special session of the legislature right now. Also in that special session, he got photo ID to vote and “loser pays” tort reform passed. This RINO bs you’re throwing at Rick Perry is just that, BS!

So many young boys on Riddlin, broken homes, the dramatic rise in homosexuality, society’s promotion of the GQ-style image of a metrosexual male (effeminate *******). Besides this, many American women are spoiled by all their prosperity and their weak-willed husbands won’t be the man and lead their households for fear of displeasing their wives. When it comes to doing the right thing, real men will choose to do the right thing all the time, even if it means risking the displeasure of their wives. Real men lead. Real men are decisive. Yeah, it almost is as if Newt has a split personality. I‘m sure a lot of it is his wife’s preferences but he also seems to be arrogant – according to Rush, who knows him very well, it seemed to him that he thought he was so great & smart, etc. and didn‘t consider any other condidate out there as good as him and therefore he didn’t have to put forth the same sacrificial efforts; he could win easily without it. My guess is also that he and some others are probably feeling some irritation/jealousy that Sarah Palin hasn’t announced and not done these things yet she is very popular. So maybe he feels why should he? Just my two cents………bye bye Newt – but thanks for the great positive stuff you’ve done for us in the past.

I’m not on board with Newt, but, when I listen(ed) to his comments on ‘right wing social engineering’, I understood him to be PRECEDING his actual answer with a qualifier, that social engineering is wrong, no matter who does it, left or right. Poorly worded, but, I thought that is what he was trying to say.
Put that statement into proximity with a criticism of the Ryan budget plan, and it is clear why it would be understood as it was.
Now, I have no reason to believe I am correct, that is just what I thought was going on.

Personally, I kind of like Chris Christie, Allen West, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann, and Sarah Palin.
Some Pres/VP combinination of those would be great!
I don’t think Christie will run, nor will Allen West. Rick Perry will, I believe. Michele Bachmann will too. I’m not decided about Pawlenty. I don’t like RINOs like Romney. I doubt Sarah will run, but, she sure knows how to ‘not-run’ WOW!!! I am certain the left is scared to death of Sarah.

glen is such a big fighter of the new world order, yet he ignores bilderberg completely. glen your a sell out who never speaks zebignews name. your actions clearly show that you are derailing the real freedom and liberty movement that is about to go world wide and leave you behind. the globalists always buy off their opposition to control both sides and dictate the outcome, i think you are the bought off opposition. your cred sucks.

      @joe3
This is not first time when Glenn is ignoring really important events. Why?
I hope he is only scared. That I will understand. We can help overcome FEAR. (False Events Appear Real). Let’s restore COURAGE NOW.
Let say we know who Bilderberg is. It is international mafia. Let’s look them in they eyes. We can do that. We can win that without one shoot fired.

You know, one of the reasons that Benedict Arnold betrayed the Patriots during the Revolution was because his wife was a Loyalist.

Remember how great those 50′s were. America was on top of the world. We had the best, did the best of everything with the big businessman, little woman at home bit. Remember how your kids would be raised by you, and not some high priced baby sitter service. Ah yes, Capitalist Mama, thanks for reminding me when life was good for us all. Not this crummy mess we’re in now.

I like Newt and his roguish approach. You get to know the candidate by what he speaks, unfettered, from his heart. And now we know he’s not for Tea Party, Freedom-loving, Liberty-defending Americans.
