Inspiring Video: High School Runner Quits Race to Help Collapsed Opponent Across Finish Line

Meghan Vogel, Ohio High School Runner, Helps Collapsed Opponent During State Finals Race

If you ever thought you couldn’t win by losing, here’s a story for you. Even though Meghan Vogel came in last place in the recent Ohio D-III 3,200-meter state finals, she came out as the winner.

With just 50 meters left in the race, Vogel — a junior who had earlier won the 1,600-meter race — noticed that one of her opponents, sophomore Arden McMath, collapsed in front of her. It was obvious McMath couldn’t finish, so Vogel did what the rules say she can’t: she helped McMath to the finish line despite facing a disqualification.

And as the two limped along, the crowd roared. Luckily for the rest of the world, the act of sportsmanship was caught on video:

Here’s how the News-Herald of Ohio describes what happened:

The athlete on the left is Meghan Vogel of West Liberty Salem, a school located in west central Ohio about 50 miles northeast of Dayton. The athlete on the right is Arden McMath of Arlington, which is about 15 miles south of Findlay. With about 50 meters to go, McMath’s legs buckled and it was clear she would be unable to finish. Vogel, who had earlier won the D-III 1,600, was running in last and saw what was playing out in front of her. She came up right next to McMath and, well, you see the rest. The crowd grew louder as they both crossed the finish line, with Vogel allowing McMath to finish ahead of her.

The Springfield News-Sun explains why the girls weren’t disqualified like they should have been:

By rule, a runner in track or cross country is automatically disqualified for aiding another runner. In this instance, however, meet management took no action. McMath was given 14th place in 12:29.90 and Vogel 15th in 12:30.24. Vogel made sure McMath crossed the finish line first because she had been ahead of her.

The move is reminiscent of what happened in 2008. Back then, during a a softball game between Western Oregon and Central Washington, two central Oregon players carried an opponent around the bases after she hit a home run and then tore her knee rounding first base. Watch as Mallory Holtman and Liz Wallace carry Sara Tucholsky from base to base (Tucholsky’s teammates or coaches could not or else she would be ruled out):

“Helping her across the finish line was a lot more satisfying than winning the state championship,” Vogel told the News-Sun.

Not just for you, Meghan. Not just for you.

There was a certain man on the walkway when Jesus of Nazereth under the weight of the cross bar He was carrying collapsed in the street and could not continue, this man was called upon to help carry that cross to Golgotha to complet the crucifiction of Jesus of Nazereth, the whole world would have changed had than man refused to carry the cross. Natural reaction to help others is sometimes a very quick reaction some people have to help someone in trouble. Others do not respond and go on with their own agenda. Bob Beckel (thefive) was choking and Eric B saved his life. Bob is a radical-liberal & Eric B is a conservative. This did not matter at the time Bob was about to die without someone helping him.
I pray there will be someone near you and have a natural reaction to come to your aide in your time of need. God Bless!

Are they not there to compete? Quitting when you are already not going to win is no sacrifice, it is just quitting… When you are there to win, that is what you do. It was no life or death struggle that she needed to be saved from. It is more of the same everyone gets a trophy mentality. Sorry if it offends some of you. Try doing this in the real world, say while qualifying for special forces….you will fail, and so will the miserable excuse for a soldier you carried.

And then maybe , if no one else in the stadium helped, she could go back and offer her a cup of gatorade, Good lord she wasnt on the sahara dying in the sun, lots of people to help right there. Further she could have killed the poor girl, what if she was stroking out? sure just get up and walk doll. Sometimes people fall out for good reasons. Mr. Fitnah…you sir are an idiot, no doubt.
She was already the 1600 meter State Champion…running the 3200 and the 1600 and winning them both at a State Meet is not easy, even for the best Olympic athletes. Running the 3200 was just academic for her because she probably had already won her league and county and regional in the 1600 and 3200 and now was at State. She made a choice, most athletes probably would have dropped out of the 3200. She is a Champion on all levels and I would give her a Division I NCAA scholarship just for her 3200 race character.

I used to run the 1600 (2nd race of the meet) then the 800 (middle of the meet) and then the 3200 (last even of the meet save the 4X400 which I sometimes had to run 3rd leg on when other runners chickened out). I was 10th in my league, 10th in my county, 1st in my school, and graduted with a chest full of medals on my jacket from Invitationals. I have ran with Pnemonia and a 101 temp, I have ran with a hyperextended Achillies, but I always ran at 100% of my capability at that time.

This young lady is more important to athletics than ANY NBA superstar or NFL big money player. She is more important to this country than even who wins the Presidency. Character, Honor, Integrity will save this country. She is a Champion because of those traits, not her running.

And you would be right, Mr. Fitnah… IF that were the moral to the story.

The REAL point of this video is that when the one girl failed, the other GAVE WILLINGLY OF HERSELF to help her finish the goal set before her. She was not FORCED to do so by the race officials.

To all the morons that spoke about “freedom to fail” or “quitting” while winning to help another or any other idiotic comment slighting this young lady for her actions…

READ THE ARTICLE!!! She was already the STATE CHAMPION DIII for the 1600 meters which she WON earlier that day. She was currently in LAST!! in the 3200 meters. I bet you couldn’t run 160 meters let alone 1600 meters at the pace this girl did…never mind the 3200 meters.

For those of you FAT GUTTED armchair quarterbacks out there drinking your beer and eatting your pizza…for runners, the 1600 is a middle distance SPRINT. The 3200 is a middle distance race. One and two miles respectively ran at near FULL speed for 4 or 8 laps. Men run these races at under 60 seconds per 1/4 mile, women right at or just over the 60 sec per 1/4 pace. Lets see you do that and then call this girl ALREADY at the State Champion level a loser. She had to have won her League, County, Region already to make it to State.

She made a CHOICE, the most AMERICAN concept there is. FREEDOM of CHOICE to LIVE how you wish, seek Happiness how you wish, and preserve Liberty how you wish. Calling her a loser or quitter shows you have no character, ethics, morals and are an example of the WORST of us while she is the of the BEST of us.

So Michael, you’re in the heat of battle with your squad, platoon, whatever. You are surrounded and the only way out is extraction via helicopter. It’s behind you and your stronghold and you are ordered to run like hell to get out of the killzone. You, along with your fellow soldiers make a break for it with cover from the chopper and its crew covering the parameter while you retreat. Suddenly, as you all run, you notice the guy in front of you take a bullet to the leg and he collapses and you quickly pass him up. You are about twenty feet from the chopper, and home free. With time running out, you have to make a decision. Tell me, Michael, what would a ‘qualified’ soldier do? Do you think he’d just keep going, leaving an injured soldier behind, or go back and get him? If you think being ‘qualified’ means you will do whatever it takes to ensure YOU survive, then you sir, are the pathetic excuse for a soldier.

Sorry all, I know it won’t endear me to those who are overly compassionate, but it is the SIMPLE TRUTH.

While I applaud her ‘compassion’, she FAILED in her ‘DUTY’, to win the race; therefore, letting her school, coaches and teammates down = unacceptable!

She is NOT in the Military, and LIFE and LIMB is NOT on the line, she absconded to her SURETY bond to those mentioned above.

IMHO =FAILURE in sportsmanship, WIN in compassion! She is not there to be compassionate, but to WIN the race. Bottom Line: she did the wrong thing.

      @ UNIX

Your analysis skills must be out of order today.

The collapsed runner dropped 50 yards from the finish line, and Vogel was running last in the race. On an event like this, if you‘re 50 yards away from the finish and you’re last, you have already lost. Even if she ran through, she would have gained nothing. Stopping to help a downed competitor in this case was an act of honor and would have had zero bearing on her final standing.

In this case, I applaud Vogel for her win in the 1-Mile sprint earlier in the day, and doubly so do I applaud her for the show of honor to a rival. I would much prefer to lose with honor than lose in a ‘meh’ fashion, because in this story the loss was inevitable.

Going out last on a high note does not get you the gold, but it does get you honorable recognition. In a society that is so bereft of honor, this example shines out among many. I would readily hire the honorable loser over the person that stepped over the fallen to achieve their own ‘victory’. Doesn’t mean I would keep them if they turned out to be a detriment to my operations, but I would give them first shot before someone who is fixated on victory and nothing more.

Even had she been in first place, this was still in every way a good deed. Winning trophies is not all there is to sports. This is a story of a young girl who was willing to give up a trophy and approval from her school for something of FAR more value and honor. A lot of people here are saying, “It’s not like the girl was dying”. First off, Megan didn’t know that. She saw someone hurt and obviously needed help, that’s all you need to know. Second, maybe she wasn’t really dying, but what you do in minor situations like this defines who you are as a human being. Had Megan just left her there, then chances are, she’d do the same if it were actually a life and death situation. That’s why this is so important, and why it parallels to stories of life and death.

One‘s definition of a winner reflects one’s own self image. Though we run many races in the course of our lives, we run only one race before the Living God. That race is not against other runners, it is a race to determine whether we can finish the course God has laid out. I pray that when your time to stand before the throne of God comes, you will have found the race God chose for you and made a successful performance. Your comment does not bode well for you, but with God, all things are possible.

There are other people around the track that could have helped the fallen runner, including her coaches and people from her team. She must be a Democrat. Repubes are all for themeselves. Was either runner a communist or illegal alien? Sharing your legs at the expense of victory reeks of socialism. Are they paying for college on their own, or are they sucking off the publics teat?

      @Exrepublisheep
If she was a Democrat, she would have waited for the government to come and help.

      @ExRepub

This girl was obviously a CONSERVATIVE as SHE offered her assistance instead of waiting for the government to show up and do it. Liberals don’t offer assistance, they offer other peoples money/labor when there is someone in need.

I‘m sure the Government will step in and punish her for lending aid without the Government’s approval.

Good on her! Coming in first is not always winning. I realize she basically had nothing to lose, but doing the honorable thincounts for so much more.

The girl was in last place and helped the girl in front of her who collapsed. They didn’t punish her; they didn’t disqualify her. I don’t see what you mean?
