Interior Secretary Orders Quote on MLK Memorial Changed Following Complaints

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has ordered a disputed inscription on the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington D.C. be changed. It reads, “I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness.’’ (Charles Dharapak/Associated Press)

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has ordered an inscription carved into the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington be changed, after complaints that the quote does not accurately reflect the civil rights leader’s words.

The inscription, “I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness,” paraphrases a sermon King delivered in 1968, two months before he was assassinated:

“If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter.”

Poet Maya Angelou was one of the leading critics of the inscription when the memorial was dedicated last year. As The Blaze previously reported, Angelou slammed the quote, saying it makes King look like “an arrogant twit” outside its proper context.

According to the Washington Post, Salazar has given the National Park Service 30 days to come up with a more accurate alternative.

“This is important because Dr. King and his presence on the Mall is a forever presence for the United States of America, and we have to make sure that we get it right,” Salazar told the Post.

Ed Jackson Jr., the executive architect of the $120 million project, previously said King’s words were shortened due to space constraints.

He said in an emailed statement to the Associated Press Friday that the cost to make changes to the inscription will be assessed but none of the existing stone work will be removed.

“A few very carefully selected words will be added to the existing phrase; that will further amplify his statement about his role in America during the mid-20th century as a leader, a social advocate, a messenger, a voice of the people … for freedom, justice, hope and peace,” Jackson said.

Harry Johnson, president of the King Memorial Foundation, told the AP it wasn’t yet clear what the alternatives might be. The group would look at all the ways a change could be made, he said.

The ongoing inscription dust-up is just one of the controversies that’s surrounded the King memorial. Others have complained that its sculptor Lei Yixin is Chinese, not American, and have charged that King’s stern-looking facial expression does not portray his peaceful nature.

We are going down a slippery slope if this CHANGE is approved. Can you imagine which inscriptions on other national monuments would be opened to CHANGE? I HOPE this CHANGE stops soon and we return to majority rule.

Mike King Jr. was an extremely flawed man. What is worse though,… because of course we are all flawed, is that he was a communist subversive who cavorted with many radical commies / progressive POS’s of the day. I mean “The REV-erend” Hesse Hackson was one of Mike’s buddies; what does that say? So, let’s call a….. well PC prohibits me from going further. Suffice to say that PC is what prompted a memorial be built and placed in our nations capital. Sad. Just like every major city that has a substantial population of folks who worship Mike King Jr. , it will also have a Mike King Jr. Blvd. Oh BTW… do not go to these streets at night, or day for that matter; those places are very dangerous.

What in the world possessed “them”(including his own family) to have this monument carved in White. How embarrassing it must be for the great black hope to forever be portrayed in “white-face.”

By the time the libbytards are through … all of history will be changed to suit their agenda. They even say ” Martin Luther King Jr. would agree with our bill “. Instead of actually benefitting or using his exact words in context … they twist and turn everything around to suit thmselves. I kinda feel sorry for him sometimes because his name is being used for ill gotten gains. Read his words … judge him by his actions. Don’t just USE him for your own personal gain. I wish his legacy would be a more honest and loving approach by people claiming to follow his lifes work.

Perhaps we shall go back to 1814, Francis Scott Key penned the words to what would become our national anthem. In the fourth stanza, he wrote, “And this be our motto: in God is our Trust; and the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave, o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

Why stop at Martin Luther King and the monument? Should we change the currency so not to stray from the original phrase, In God is our Trust?

@baddoggy… No, it is NOT the standard.
Dr PauI had the offensive material in the ARTICLES he published.
TheBlaze does NOT. Glenn has no control over what YOU post as a RESPONSE to the articles.
Do you want TheBlaze to censor all posts? Disallow posts? Or is it that you just want everyone to agree with YOU?
If Ron PauI had received letters in response to his articles, and those responses contained the offensive material, then nobody would ever have questioned him on it. But, when you put your name on something, you are responsible for its content. He made the profit from it. He gained the notoriety from it. He must also be accountable for its content.

Well, you needn’t be an elected official to be honored. That said, I think the whole MLK mystique is over-done. He had his good works, but had enough character flaws that I don’t think he deserves a federal holiday. Communist associations during the height of our Cold War with the Soviet Union, frequent adulterer (bad for anyone, but especially low for a member of the clergy), and plagarism on his doctoral thesis (which can get you kicked out of college, not earn you a degree). The holiday and the memorial for MLK are just more by-products of affirmative action.

BHO still has a lot of people fooled (in large part in thanks to the State media). Most of the fooled are younger. They were taught socialist propaganda in school. This and lack of life experiences make them easy targets to use for his agenda.

As for the “first black president” the liberals have more trouble with racism than anyone and it is another area in which their intelligence is questionable. BHO would have us (and had many) vote for him because of his color, not his character. He and MO play the race card all the time. We are past that as a country. Maybe they should just add the words,“Made in China”..that would explain it all. Afterall, this is the typical cheap Chinese c.rap you get from them.

MLK is a National treasure. This pales in comparison to how Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson have taken his words of FREEDOM and changed them to give me, give me, give me,,,They want the Black people of America enslaved to welfare and Government.

If you want to change something, change the idiot black leaders that have taken us down the road to serfdom…

      The RON PAUL Newsletters.

The December 1990 newsletter describes Martin Luther King Jr. as “a world-class adulterer” who “seduced underage girls and boys” and “replaced the evil of forced segregation with the evil of forced integration.”

A February 1991 newsletter attacks “The X-Rated Martin Luther King.”

An October 1990 edition of the Political Report ridicules black activists, led by Al Sharpton, for demonstrating at the Statue of Liberty in favor of renaming New York City after Martin Luther King. The newsletter suggests that “Welfaria,” “Zooville,” “Rapetown,” “Dirtburg,”and “Lazyopolis ” would be better alternatives—and says, “Next time, hold that demonstration at a food stamp bureau or a crack house.”

Ron Paul’s name is on it…. Ron Paul owns it.

Ron Paul would not have voted for the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the landmark piece of legislation that outlawed major forms of discrimination against blacks and women. And the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, his son Rand Paul took heat for stating his opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act during his run for Kentucky’s state senate. Rand backtracked on his comments and eventually issued an apology, and was later elected a state senator.

And what about a medal for poor old Rosa Parks. Ron Paul said no, but he‘d chip in a hundred bucks because she’s one of his heroes like MLK (turn on laugh track). Paul DOES like the Boy Scout coins he backed though. In other words, “Anything we like is constitutional. Anything we don’t like is unconstitutional. This has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not it’s actually mentioned in the constitution.”

Excuse me idiot. Ron Paul would have wanted the HEARTS to be changed about segregation, not to make a law to force people to not discriminate. You think forcing someone to not discriminate with a law stops it? You are a Liberal unthinking t@rd!

BADDOGGY. You are the epitomy of the average Ron Paul supporter. When taken off of message/talking points… you have no idea how to interact with dissenting opinion other than call people idiots, morons or whatever the juvenile term for the day may be. In reality, I have no problem with it… but you seem to be offending RECOVERINGNEOCON. He must be one of those squeamish pacifist types we hear and read about.

RECOVERING…… BOO! Scared you huh? I don‘t know what your fascination with Newt Gingrich is but he’s ahead of Ron Paul in SC as far as I can see? You feel threatened by him somehow?

Probably the administration behind this, as Michelle said, “Barack knows we are going to have to change history”…..the King family should demand that the exact quote be inscripted…..(space constraints, bull) how about using smaller letters???? Oh, but nobody thought of that???? What pieces of crap!!!

You would have thought that if they were going to change his words they would have run it by the family … I agree this smells of the changing of history to suit their agenda … like everything else the Obama administration does.

The whole thing is a disaster, it was made in China, the monument makes him look 1/2 chinese, and the quote is wrong. They should scrap it and have some black American artists create a proper one.

Even the pose is wrong with the arms crossed, the whole statue is a disaster. And it was a whole committee of people who studied it and came up with this. Whatever one thinks of King the statue does not do him or the country any service. Some group should raise money to replace it.
