Investigation: Mexican Cartels Using Money, Sex to Bribe U.S. Border Agents

As violence increases along our nation’s southern border, a stunning investigation just released by the Dept. of Homeland Security finds that Mexican drug cartels are successfully bribing U.S. border agents with money and sex.
The investigation was conducted by Charles Edwards, acting inspector general at the DHS. He discussed it during a hearing at the Senate Subcommittee on Disaster Recovery and Intergovernmental Affairs. CNN reports:
In exchange, agents allow contraband or unauthorized immigrants through inspection lanes, protect or escort traffickers or leak sensitive information, said Charles Edwards, acting inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security.
Testifying before a Senate subcommittee, Edwards cited the Zetas drug cartel as one of the leaders “involved increasingly in systematic corruption.”
He did not elaborate on how non-cash methods of corruption, like sexual favors, have been used to corrupt agents.
At the same hearing, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Alan Bersin said that since October 2004, 127 Customs and Border Protection employees have been arrested or indicted for acts of corruption.
“The accelerated hiring pace under which we operated between 2006 and 2008 — and, frankly, mistakes from which we are learning — exposed critical organizational and individual vulnerabilities within CBP,” he said.
Still, he referenced a new piece of legislation he think will help combat that. The Anti-Border Corruption Act of 2010, he said, will require that by 2013 all the agency’s law enforcement applicants must receive a polygraph test before being hired. In addition, it calls for periodic reinvestigations of agents.
“However,” he added, “our investigations are complicated by the brutality the cartels use to control their organizations and coerce witnesses, and the sophistication and advanced technologies available to organizations with unlimited money.”

This hearing was ABOUT an ongoing investigation, lol. I’m a GEEK and I watched the hearing on CSPAN & I was SHOCKED at some things the author of this article DID NOT mention. OVER 70% of CBP officers being reviewed in one way or another are PROBABLY CORRUPT! What the HELL does that say about the SECURITY of our Southern Borders??????? Not only that…..there is FRICTION between DHS IG and the CBP regarding…..wait for it……BACKGROUND CHECKS and POLYGRAPH TESTS! The IG found they WERE basically NOT BEING DONE! It’s NO WONDER there is so much CORRUPTION down on our Southern Border! And on top of all that you have the whole PROSECUTING the BAD GUYS thing making it ALL THE WAY to DOJ….yeah, uh huh!
Senator Rand Paul’s concerns had to do with LEGAL Immigration and Student VISAS…you know….the whole WHO’s CHECKING UP ON THESE PEOPLE question? And what about the 1800 IRAQI Refugees that have ended up in the US?…..WHO did the Background Checks and Polygraphs on THEM? I don’t think he asked about ALL the Refugees FROM PALESTINE authorized by an Obama EO 2 yrs ago! Basically Sen Paul was told that we don’t have the PEOPLE to monitor all these incoming people……THEN TEMPORARILY STOP LETTING THEM FREAKIN IN…at least until you GE

When there is billions of dollars to be made dealing any illegal item, the cartels have an almost unlimited budget. Why are we suprised when they use it to corrupt those set to watch them? That story is as old as time. You’re surprised that agents could be tempted to take money and favors to look the other way? Grow up and start living in the real world.
Alchohol Prohibition was repealed for several very good reasons. Corruption of law enforcement was only one of them. Too bad we didn’t learn the lesson then.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 11:38amIf legalizing marijuana would stop the drug crime, I would be all for it. But, you cant have meth, cocain, opium etc. legalized. That would be like legalizing beer but not hard liquor. These people want the hard stuff and will get it. After listening to the ElPrez., he would most likely shoot Americans over running hic country and trying to destroy it, before their toes got wet. Lotus.
Report Post »the_ancient
Posted on June 10, 2011 at 11:48amActually just legalizing pot would shut down a good part of the cartels business, Marijuana still makes up over 60% of the Mexican Drug Trade,
But it would not end the war on drugs, nor would it restore the civil liberties stolen by the war on drugs.
Prohibition NEVER EVER works never in the history of man kind has prohibition worked. Education and sever punishment of real crime related to the ABUSE not USE of drugs is the only way to cut down on the problems. Some people can/do/and have used cocaine and other “hard drugs” while still enjoying successful careers and happy lives, it is there choice to do so, people that fall in to an ABUSE cycle and steal or commit other crimes against another person’s property or person should be harshly punish, but we should not punish people because they choose an intoxicant that we disagree with by all the while hypocritically enjoying a different intoxicant that is “acceptable” that is the antithesis of freedom,

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 11:21amDrug Cartels operate with one goal in mind, getting their “goods” to market. They innovate as needed, kill and threaten as required to reach a successful delivery. As long as demand is strong in the USA, becoming more and more of a decadent secular society each and every minute, this will never stop. Get used to it………unless we DECRIMINALIZE!
Report Post »GadsdenPatriot
Posted on June 10, 2011 at 9:16pmI’ve never said this to anyone here yet but you are an idiot. Decriminalization is done in Socialistic countries as an aid to dumb the people down and we have never modeled our Nation from Socialism/Communism. Secondly if you’ve learned ANYTHING these cartels HATE competition! Legalizing pot will create even more competition and they WILL act out violently to stay ahead of the US government competition. As an unintended side effect you can be sure of even more corruption in our politicians and LE for fear of their lives and lives of their families. Get with it! Securing the borders is the ONLY reasonable answer along with a crack down on corruption as we’ve never seen before. Those with defeatist attitudes such as yours are contributing to the problem NOT the answer.

Posted on June 10, 2011 at 11:06amThis is no surprise people after all are corruptable. If drugs were legal it would be a non violent bussiness and then the border patrol could concentrate on just keeping people out. If drugs were legal then there is no money for the drug cartels to fund themseleves or their corrupt officals on both sides of the border. Bring our troops hom,e from around the world and build bases on the border that would secure the border.

It’s like me going to a bank and borrowing money then giving the bank the money I just borrowed with no strings attached and paying the interest to the bank on the original loan. Then I have to pay back the principal of the loan when it matures. We are doing this with China who holds 1.1 Trillion and every other country who asks for it. Like Janet N says, common sense is not prerequisite for sound foreign policy. Total debt will exceed total GDP and default is in the cards.
When will we ever learn? When will we ever learn?

One thing that I noticed is that they are claiming about hiring all these “crooks” between 2006 and 2008, up until the time that the “messiah” took over. Also this is probably another ploy to protect their plans to NOT protect our borders and this would help them “explain” hide what they are doing. Posted on June 11, 2011 at 2:53amI’m disappointed at the spin used in this story. I’ll attempt to correct the bias as best I can.
1). “since October 2004”: Over half a decade.
2). “127 Customs and Border Protection employees”: CBP employees means all echelons. Also, CBP is not the US Border Patrol, they are the ‘blue shirt’ officers you encounter at a US port of entry, not to be mistaken for Border Patrol Agents under USBP. Those employees found guilty range from officers to office employees to retired former employees selling information or engaging in illicit activities.
3). “corruption”: this term is very ambiguous and incites an instant, predisposed prejudice of thought against the agency as a whole.
CBP/USBP is the largest law enforcement agency in the US, so by virtue of deduction it stands to reason that it will have the spotlight shined the brightest upon it. However, do the math: 127 divided by 6 years is an average of 21 employees per year. 21 out of an employee pool of over 100,000 and the percentage drops significantly.
Bottom line: there is always going to be dirtbags in every law enforcement organization. It’s sad but unavoidable. Prosecute them. However, try to remain impartial and keep an open mind, think for yourself and then place your support behind the other 99% of us down here keeping America safe 24/7-365. Not everyone is a dirt bag, shame on you Blaze for painting with such a broad brush. Up to this story, I had faith in you, Glenn.

BIG money is involved:
How a big US bank laundered billions from Mexico’s
murderous drug gangs.
As the violence spread, billions of
dollars of cartel cash began to seep into the global
financial system. But a special investigation by the
Observer reveals how the increasingly frantic warnings of
one London whistleblower were ignored
The Guardian.co.uk
by Ed Vulliamy
The Observer, Sunday 3 April 2011
During a 22-month investigation by agents from the US
Drug Enforcement Administration, the Internal Revenue
Service and others, it emerged that the cocaine smugglers
had bought the plane with money they had laundered
through one of the biggest banks in the United States:
Wachovia, now part of the giant Wells Fargo.
The authorities uncovered billions of dollars in wire
transfers, traveller’s cheques and cash shipments through
Mexican exchanges into Wachovia accounts. Wachovia was
put under immediate investigation for failing to maintain
an effective anti-money laundering programme. Of special
significance was that the period concerned began in 2004,
which coincided with the first escalation of violence
along the US-Mexico border that ignited the current drugs
war.
Criminal proceedings were brought against Wachovia,
