Investigators: White House Blocked Release of Spill’s Worst-Case Scenarios

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House blocked efforts by federal scientists to tell the public just how bad the Gulf oil spill could have been, according to a panel appointed by President Barack Obama to investigate the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

In documents released Wednesday, the national oil spill commission’s staff reveals that in late April or early May the White House budget office denied a request from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to make public the worst-case discharge from the blown-out well.

The Unified Command — the government team in charge of the spill response — also was discussing the possibility of making the numbers public, the report says, citing interviews with government officials.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

But Jerry Miller, head of the White House science office’s ocean subcommittee, told The Associated Press in an interview at a St. Petersburg, Fla., conference on the oil‘s flow that he didn’t think the budget office censored NOAA.

“I would very much doubt that anyone would put restrictions on NOAA’s ability to articulate factual information,” Miller said.

The April 20 blowout and explosion in the Gulf of Mexico killed 11 workers, spewed 206 million gallons of oil from the damaged oil well, and sunk the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig.

BP’s drilling permit for the Macondo well originally estimated the worst scenario to be a leak of 6.8 million gallons per day. In late April, the Coast Guard and NOAA received an updated estimate of 2.7 million to 4.6 million gallons per day.

While those figures were used as the basis for the government’s response to the spill — they appeared on an internal Coast Guard Situation report and on a dry-erase board in NOAA’s Seattle war room — the public was never told.

In the meantime, government officials were telling the public that the well was releasing 210,000 gallons per day — a figure that would be later adjusted to be much closer to the worst-case estimates.

“Despite the fact that the Unified Command had this information, relied on it for operations, and publicly states that it was operating under a worst-case scenario, the government never disclosed what its…scenario was,” the report says.

University of South Florida oceanographer David Hollander, who was also at the St. Petersburg meeting of 150 scientists studying the oil flow on Wednesday, said he was surprised to find that the White House budget office gagged NOAA. He said public disclosure would have helped scientists to figure out what was going on.

“It would have been much better to know from a scientific point of view the reality,” he said in an interview with The Associated Press.

    Why even write news articles about something that is a fact of everyday Government Policy. Which is the same exact way you can stay married to your Wife without ever being Divorced. Only tell her what you know you have to tell her to make her think she is in control. When the control is 100% in your hands. I hate to tell the truth sometimes because I feel for weak minded people. Only because it’s a closet problem and they will never get out. They believe everything without investigating anything. This will never change. It will only get worse. What our Government wants is what they get. Stand in their way and No Free Handouts for you. Even all the folks that used to work and Hate and Constantly complain about Welfare recipients have become Dinosaurs. I’m really getting madder by the second. To all you people that can read, investigate and think for themselves. I LOVE YOU. For those that cannot. I can only hope you keep drinking and doing your drugs and one day the wrong mixture comes along. Cheaper to use our tax money to pay the $200.00 allowable Government Funeral Allocation then to keep you alive and stupid. Pee Wee Herman wasn’t always funny.     If your‘re suprised by this I’d be very disappointed. This administration has been more about controlling the narrative, obfuscations and manipulating the media than any in history.
    Transparency my @$$. Deceit is the order of the day every day. That is not to say that previous administrations have been a whole lot better. The word “swamp” comes to mind.
    Rod Blagojevich describes it best from their point of view when he says it’s “routine politics” as though it is a benign thing they engage in as the ruling class.
    This revelation only increases our desire for more burning questions to be answered. The first things I think about are thorough investigations into the DOJ and forensic audits of the Fed and SEC.

    I thought that for the first month of the “disaster” BP kept giving numbers daily, while Obama/Feds kept saying every chance they got, they aren’t telling the truth, the actual numbers are at least 10x as large. Shouting the sky is falling over and over. Once it was capped, they wined and cried that then needed to cap it better. Then the announced that 90% of the oil was missing, leaving the amount of oil actually accounted for equaling the amount BP said leaked all along.

    Our great country was founded by and for the citizens of the thirteen colonies. It was designed to insure that a central government was controlled and limited by representatives of those citizens. It was given a limited amount of power, with many checks and balances, to secure the rights and freedoms for its citizens. They were making sure that an American Government would and could not become as Britian had. England enacted laws and taxes on their American subjects, but without allowing the colonies a say in their government. Ignoring the will of the people of America, they bullied and took away what limited rights they had and tried to force them to comply. Sound familiar? Yes, we don’t have to look far across the Atlantic at a despotic leader, we have only to look at the Oval Office in Washington, D. C. and to those whom we had entrusted the liberties of the people and the country. Our representatives, Senate and the House, are there to represent the will of the people. Instead, they have consistently lied to the constituents, both during campaigns and when in office. They have consistently rob the American people, not only of their money, but also by stealing their liberties, little by little. The incumbent office holders allow themselves to be above the law, they allow themselves to steal by back-room corrupt deals and the like. They ignore the very people who put them in office, they even resort to passing laws, under cover of darkness. They hide laws and corrupt deals in the midst of thousand of pages of laws. This has always been a trick of unethical lawyers. Their mindset is to bog down any opposition by inudating them with mountains of paperwork. Then, they laugh and call the people stupid and ignorant, or worse! No doubt, I could go on and on. Their lack of character, morals and ethics makes them unfit to be employed anywhere, let alone entrusted with the security, freedom, and economic growth of this great country. They have taken your freedom to worship, especially targeting Christianity. They have tried to rewrite the American history, to further their agendas, just like the Moslems continue to do with Israel.

    Soon after deciding what sort of Government America was to become, that very question was asked of Benjamin Franklin. In reply Franklin said, “A Republic….if we can keep it”. This is a question that should be upon the lips of all true American patriots. If we can’t or more correctly, if we won’t, then we don’t deserve it. The choice is up to us, the American people, and the answer should be and must be yes we will!

    You’re probably asking how do we insure that we will keep this nation a free Republic. Oh, we voted for only those who promised no more taxes, no more spending, etc., etc. Of course they all were proven to be liars again (or should I have said they were just not quite forthcoming or perhaps they were a little disingenuious?). Then we did the “best of the two evils” choice. This was no different than the “Magician’s Choice” trick! We now know that there is no difference between Republicans and the Democrats when it comes to which is telling the truth. Neither has the best interest of America at heart, probably not even in mind! Their goal is simply to acquire power, money, more power and more money while doing and saying anything to remain in office.

    So what is the answer? They don’t listen when the people, overwhelmingly, protest and tries to voice their opposition. So the American people need to get their UNDIVIDED attention. How? WE THE PEOPLE, must vote any and all incumbents out of office. It doesn’t matter if they are better than most. If they haven’t been part of the solution, then they are part of the problem. THEY MUST KNOW AND WE MUST LET THEM KNOW THAT GOVERNMENT WILL NO LONGER BE RUN BY ROUGUE LAWYERS AND OPPORTUNISTS, PROGRESSIVES (AKA SOCIALISTS), ETC. THEY ARE NOTHING MORE THAN MODERN-DAY CARPETBAGGERS OR WANNA-BE DICTATORS. THEY MUST BE EDUCATED TO THE FACT THAT THEY WILL BE VOTED OUT AGAIN AND AGAIN, UNTIL THEY LEARN THAT OUR REPRESENTATIVES ARE NO LONGER ABLE TO RUN THEIR OWN VERISON OF CRIME, INC.
    AND THOSE THAT ARE ELECTED TO OFFICE, BUT CONTINUE TO DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THEIR OWN BENEFIT WILL SOON LEARN THEY WILL HAVE ONLY ONE TERM IN OFFICE.

    We, the people, need to lobby our newly elected representatives to enact new laws to insure ALL our freedoms, our security, etc. Enact laws that ethical or criminal behavior of representatives will be prosecuted swiftly and severly, with no possibility of any pardon…not by a state Governor nor by a President! Enact laws or amendments to limit a President to one term only, ensuring that any damage to our country will not be as damaging as is obvious with this Government. Further limit the terms of our Representatives, both in the Senate and the House. Imperative to limit the term of all Supreme Court Justices to no more than an eight year term and make an amendment that the justices can no longer re-interpret the Constitution, but uphold the laws as it was written and intended by the original framers.

    So, the bottom line is this: unless the American people get the undivided attention of those in government…when you and your family members are homeless and hungry or at the very least jobless…remember, you have only yourselves to blame.

    THE ONLY WAY TO INSURE THAT YOUR FUTURE REPRESENTATIVES WILL LISTEN TO ITS CONSTITUENTS IS VOTE OUT ALL INCUMBENTS!!! FROM THAT POINT ON, EACH REPRESENTATIVE MUST KNOW WE WILL VOTE THEM OUT AGAIN AND AGAIN UNTIL WE HAVE RESPONSIBLE REPRESENTATIVES THAT UNDERSTAND THEY ARE THERE FOR THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE.

    No amount of money will ever be able to bring back the Gulf… The government waited too long to take steps to avoid this mess… They also did all they could to try and hide the oil that is still sitting there in the depths… It’s almost as if they planned things to work out this way…

    right, because the obama administration is so straightforward and honest with the american people, oh and let‘s not forget ’environmentally friendly’ yeah right. if they really cared about the environment they would have let bobby jindall barricade his beaches and let the oil skimmers into the ocean. but we couldn‘t do that because it wasn’t eco friendly since they put like 2% of the oil back into the water, which is apparently worse than 100% of it reaching land. i am so sick of these people…

Let’s say BP earned a total of $5 in pre-tax profit (that means money earned after covering all their expenses) in a year. If they paid 3 of those dollars as TAX, they were left with $2 as after-tax profit. This scenario actually happens!!!! And it doesn’t matter how many zeros follow any of those numbers. Jackass.

    BP also had to pay the royalties on the leaked oil !! That was part of the idea of keeping the spill estimates small. I wonder if they got credit for the $20B ?

    Anyway the gulf is safe now. Mexico will be drilling there, getting the royalties and selling it to us. With the problems they have yet to resolve in TX, NM, AZ, CA borders, do we think there will be any reparations if there is a spill?? Who is kidding who???

    The oil spill creeped its way back into the news…funny that it just kinda fell off the charts for a while. I feel very bad for the people that have to live in those areas and deal with that kinda man made disaster eat a large chunk of their business. BUT then I see “DRILL BABY DRILL” and it kind of makes me think that I shouldnt feel sorry.

    I mean BP paid in 20 bill starting to help clean up and pay for claims, so I guess they are getting “fair compensation” and since there is, in their words, no more oil to be found then I guess from a Tea ****** sort of way I dont feel so bad.

    on another note in regards to this spill, its disasters like this that make green energy seem so much more reasonable. Not to say that we should stop drilling for oil cause lord knows we would need it too, but why not use renewable energy to help slow down consumption of natural resources that are soon to run out. Oh yeah cause thats a lot of money…seems thats all tea baggers care about.

      The drilling moratorium is what’s destroying the jobs down there. There is nothing preventing people from going back to work except Obama’s moratorium. The democratic governor of Louisiana is even blocking Obama from appointing his cronies to federal posts until he lifts it. She even took the step of making sure that the senate would meet every few days while they are not technically in session so that Obama can’t use the loophole to make recess appointments.

      Republican’s proposed that a multi-fuel engine reguirement be added to the energy bill. It would reguire all new cars to be able to run on gasoline, ethanol, or methanol. Unlike ethanol, methanol only cost a buck to produce. This would have kept other prices (gasoline) low. This technology is available now.

      To make a long story short, Harry Reid would not even allow it to come to a vote. Democrat are trying to destroy this country and MSM won’t let republicans and conservative make their case. Fortunately they have not silenced the Internet, radio, and Fox yet.

      Try to figure out why there were so many obstacles one after the other nudged by the WH and its Czars and their agencies , towards BP , Jindal and state of LA authorities and anyone who understood the seriousness of the situation then.
      Do some research on the role of MMS.
      Obama wanted to exploit this tragedy to kick some @$$ ( he was clueless as to whose @$$ but thats irrelevant ) just like Bush did after 9/11 . He said so himself.
      This regime’s reaction to the terrible tragedy was never about safety or science or facts or truths , it was always about money and dirty games .
      Soros got away with 2 billion for oil exploration in Brazil,
      Mexico got money from this regime for similar deep water drilling in the same Gulf of Mexico.
      WH could get a 20 billion dollar slush fund from BP .
      And to top it all off, Obama’s minions are still blaming Bush and Cheney for whatever happened @ Deepwater Horizon.

      What did the American people of gulf region get ?
      A moratorium ? A buraucracy that disburses money to those whose lives have been affected forever ?
      Its never about science with this administration. How do we know that ? Because Obama and his mouthpieces keep telling us that its about science .

    All they had to say was that they had no way of knowing exactly how much but they were going to do everything they could to stop it. I’d have been satisfied with “It’s just a helluva lot of oil!” Any fool could see it was a horrible situation. They could’ve crunched the numbers after it was stopped and cleaned up. That’s politicians for you though, always worrying about the wrong things at the wrong times.

      Funny how George Soros had just invested $900 million in South American oil company when the BP thing happened to happen. Then Obama’s moratorium on oil drilling in the Gulf. Then the rigs moved to South America where the US government loaned $2 billion to drill for oil there.

      if you opened your mind once in a while you might have found out that the federal govt was just as responsible. we’re supposed to be regulating these rigs and the obama administration told bp not to instal the last safety measure. besides, and this is the big secret, we need domestic oil! while we currently have no alternative energy we can’t remain dependent on foreign oil! we already had one oil crisis, do we real want to be at the mercy of the middle east and have terrorists telling us what we should be doing?

Did you read the same article as the rest of us did. “Obama tried to warn us but the tea party folks got behind the coverup so that the coporate masters wouldn’t be embarrassed.” You should read it outloud to yourself and maybe you‘ll understand the article because you don’t seem to comorehend the truth. Remember this is the Administration’s own commission so you would exoect it to be more favorable to the Administration than an independent investigation would. So what are they not telling us?
      It sounds to me like the Administration was trying to downolay the severity of the oilsoill, which surorises me since they were on too of the spill since “Day One” and this is there “top priority.” It’s hard to see the truth through rose colored glasses.

      We now know that Conservatives have a sense of humor…and at least one, likely far more, liberals have none. I was cracking uo reading all the resoonses. Thank you for brightening uo my day.

      As for the oilspill, I think it was an Epic Fail of BP for failing to maintain the safety of the Rig. And the cleanup was just as badly handled. There were countless people bringing up useful and cheap ideas to seal and/or clean up the mess, but they were mostly unheard. Instead they tried the same thing 3 times and it still didn’t work 100% until they could cement the whole thing up. The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result. Plus those dispersants they dropped into the water didn‘t do much to clean up as it just made the oil heavier and sink down where it couldn’t be seen. And the whole thing probably cost more the way they did it than alternative unconventional ways. It’s not like any thing they did was done before (the stuff that worked anyway).

      ok, I’m done with that. I don’t think there was any conspiracy or cover up. Whether it was 600k gallons a day or 6 million, the damage was done. The only change is the duration and area affected. Considering how much there was, I doubt too many people would be able to grasp it well enough to tell the difference up close as they are cleaning it up.
