Iowa House Dems. Walk Out in Protest of Gun Bills

Social issues surprisingly came to the front of national political dialogue last month, could second amendment rights be next?
Iowa Democrats made an unprecedented exit from the state’s Capitol Wednesday, according to Republican Gov. Terry Branstad in protest to Republican plans to debate two gun measures. Democrats claim that Republicans failed to properly inform legislators about plans to debate bills supporting gun rights. The Des Moines Register reports:
“At issue were bills seeking to broaden Iowa’s ‘Castle Doctrine’ allowing individuals to defend themselves with deadly force and a proposal to write the right to bear arms into the state constitution.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, D-Des Moines accused Republican House Leader Linda Upmeyer of failing to properly inform legislators about plans to debate the bills on Wednesday, leaving Democrats without time to draw up and offer changes to the bills.
“She said they will debate those bills today whether we like it or not,” McCarthy told the Des Moines Register on Wednesday morning, as Democrats were leaving the Capitol. “I told her that we’ve been double crossed, and we will not be debating those bills today.”
He later circulated a scanned copy of the House calendar, on which he said Upmeyer had circled the bills she intended to bring up for debate. The gun measures were not among those circled. (A copy of the calendar is available on the Register’s website.) Republicans hold a 60-to-40 majority in the House, which allows them to set the calendar for debate and largely control the legislative process.”
Republicans argue that the schedule was well known and the exit was an attempt to make a political scene.
It is unsure where the Democrats’ fled to but the Register reports that the incident disrupted a full day of legislation action, featuring debate on 11 bills in addition to the gun bills, several committee meetings, and an event commemorating Black History Month. The event, which featured several guests whom had traveled from across the state, was curtailed thanks to the stunt shortening an hour-long program and leaving two massive sheet cakes brought for lawmakers to commemorate the military service of the Tuskegee Airmen uneaten.
“I’ve been in the minority and I’ve been in the majority in the legislature and I’ve always felt that the best thing to do is to not be afraid to state your position,” Gov. Terry Branstad said of the incident. Branstad has been in Iowa politics since the 1970s and told the Register that the incident is unprecedented and could not recall a similar situation in Iowa.
Wisconsin and Indiana Democrats behaved similarly to their hawk-eye brethren when they fled the state last year as an attempt to block legislation reforming unions.
Perhaps this will be the new trend in American politics, if you don’t like what is being debated, flee the state.
Real mature.

Posted on March 3, 2012 at 3:26pmI hope I don’t have to add Iowa to my no fly list. I refuse to go or spend money on a state that refuses to recognize my Oklahoma Carry Permit. Since I can’t go up thru DC, NY.Phillie, Mich, etc. This whole area is off limits and I refuse to buy on Amazon or e-Bay if vender is located there. I have 3 Grand Sons that myself and wife want to take up there but untill their politics change it is a no go.

Posted on March 1, 2012 at 7:45amEvery fish, bird, and animal (and even a plant or two) on earth will defend itself when threatened with harm, but some people still believe that humans, alone amongst all life’s creatures, have no such right. Poppycock! Such people are immature or mentally unbalanced or have hidden agendas. When the education system is overhauled in this country, as it must be if we are to survive, and the school books are rewritten to contain the whole truth and nothing but the truth, the idea of self defense and the right to bear arms should be high on the list of mandatory subjects to be taught to our children.

Posted on March 1, 2012 at 8:45amThis is the same tactic that worked so well for them in Wisconsin. It is about time to shutter their offices and stop their pay until they come back to work. These temper tantrums are another sign of our education system tun amok. What if all the students in public school suddenly stood up and walked out of a classroom when a teacher announced a POP test and they simply said It wasn‘t on the schedule so I’m going home. When I was a child my mother would have warmed my backside and sent me back to school. Now a days the parents would probably sue the school for hurting little Johnny’s feeeelings. Well, this is our little Johnny moment. What are we going to do?

Posted on February 29, 2012 at 9:36pmHard to believe it’s come to this. Politicians walking out on debating a law that ALLOWS people to defend themselves in their own home. This shouldn’t even be up for debate. This is a God-given right, recognized in the Second Amendment. These phonies recoil (pun intended) at the sight of a gun, yet go home in the evening and watch any number of show where guns are used and people are killed with them. Every sane adult should be required to learn how to shoot a gun and encouraged to own and carry one. Instead, liberals want to prevent law abiding citizens from owning guns and to be defenseless against criminals who will always find a way to get guns. So you know whose side they are on. Every politician who takes the oath to uphold the Constitution should be absolutely required to exercise his/her Second Amendment rights and own and know how to use guns. The fact that they don’t is one reason they utterly fail to understand the Second Amendment. So they run away like children. That’s because they know they are dead wrong in their position.

Posted on February 29, 2012 at 10:16pmThis right to bear arms is in the constitution. Better believe I would defend my home against anyone breaking in and threatening my family. That freedom is given in numerous states. I am surprised to find out they don’t have it in Iowa. These Democrats really showed themselves and ruined the day for those Black Pilots who not only were heroes, but also changed the way black soldiers were perceived during World War II. The Dems (who ran away) behavior should be an affront to these brave men.

I own several weapons, am skilled with all of them and feel secure because I have them. It is not my hope to kill someone with them, it is my hope that I can protect my family and property from someone trying to kill us to take what we have earned and saved. That is why all of the people I know have weapons. Trying to explain this to EMOM is just a effort in futility, like trying to explain it to Bill Maher.

What, they didn’t have time to contact Insane Mayors against Illegal Guns or the Fraidy Campaign to get more up-to-date lies to bring to the floor? Just sign the bill, then the Republicans will tell you what’s in the bill.

Posted on February 29, 2012 at 5:49pmWhat is there to debate?
People have the right to defend themselves, no matter where they might be. Not only is it a constitutional right…(2nd Amendment…remember?)…it is a God given right.
Not only that…..but people who have the capability to defend others, have the responsibility to do so….whether it is defending ones self, family, neighbor, or even a total stranger.
Why are Democrats so “wuss” about this subject?
Get it through your heads……there will never be world peace. And not everyone is going to get along, and “coexist”.

Posted on February 29, 2012 at 6:39pm@ENCINOM, you are mistaken. The Constitution codifies the rights that God gave to man, including the right to defend oneself. And even if you don’t believe in God, every human still has the right to defend their life, liberty, and property from the aggressions of others.
Who are you to tell anyone how they should be able to defend their life, their home, or their family? Do you simply believe that someone will always be there to save your simpering cowardly carcass from criminals? If so, you are sadly, terribly, perhaps even fatally, mistaken.

I can remember my kids while being raised used to storm off to their rooms and disengage when they didn’t get their way. This kinda reminds me of that behavior. Prepare their ammendments to the bills? We all know the stance of all the liberals when it comes to the second ammendment. They all have a hard time acknowledging “GOD” much less the US Constitutions protection of the right that God himself gave us to self protection. So if they don’t believe in God, why would anyone think they’d believe you have a right to protect yourself. I say have recalls on all their whinney butts and toss them out minus their golden retirement/healthcare plans. If they’re not mature enough to debate the issues, what are they even doing in office other than sucking on the teet of the taxpayers.
