iPhone Rumor Mill Keeps Churning: Gore Slips Saying iPhones (plural!)

Recent reports are saying that Apple should be announcing its rumored-but-not-yet-confirmed iPhone 5 on October 4. Correction. Rumor mill now says iPhones.

Al Gore — yes, the former vice president who is also an Apple board member — was reported by The Next Web as saying phones plural:

He specifically stated that ‘the new iPhones would be out next month’ at the Discovery Invest Leadership Summit today.

We’ve been informed by Toby Shapshak, the editor of Stuff Magazine in South Africa that is attending the conference, that his quote was specifically: “Not to mention the new iPhones coming out next month. That was a plug.”

Shapshak says that the statement was definitely plural, although it wasn’t clear whether that meant two different models, as the statement was not clarified in any way by Gore.

This is the first time that anyone associated with the company has confirmed even one next generation phone is on the way:

Still, it’s pretty unusual to have an Apple Board member say anything definite about Apple’s Plans for future products, as its company policy is that it does not speak about them, period. Although Gore isn’t an Apple employee, he has been an influential member of Apple’s board, spearheading efforts to make the company more environmentally friendly and energy efficient.

Earlier today it was also reported on All Things D a more specific — but still rumored date — for the release of iPhone 5. Drum roll, please:

Tuesday, Oct. 4.

That’s the day Apple is currently expected to hold its next big media event, according to sources close to the situation, where the tech giant will unveil the next iteration of its popular iPhone.

While Apple could certainly change its plans anytime, sources said that the Oct. 4 date has been selected by the company to showcase the iPhone 5. Sources added that the plan is now to make the new device available for purchase within a few weeks after the announcement.

Previous iPhone rumors of the last few months have included more general dates of the official announcement and design concepts. One rumored prototype in particular was reportedly left in a bar, picked up and then retrieved by Apple employees with the help of  the San Francisco Police Department.

    I can proudly say that I have never contributed a DIME to any Apple products, and never intend to. While I know that the product itself is a good product and many people enjoy them, There are far more other products that do a good job. We have just gotten a Droid hot spot phone and i have been perfectly happy with the whole PC culture, and can do all photo editing and what ever else on a pc as a mac, for less. I am not one of these folks who feels it is prestigious to pay gobs and gobs of extra money for a product just so i can be perceived as “cool” or in the know.. You people have no idea how algore is sucking every one dry.. I will not feed any thing he has to do with !

    The rumor mill has it that there will be the new iPhone 5, and a low-cost iPhone (some are calling it the “4S”)
    The iPhone 5 is to be thinner and have an edge-to-edge screen.
    Rumors include an HD camera and dual processors.
    It is reported that Sprint will also begin to offer the iPhone, which should help Sprint, whose stock has been struggling of late, with its two LARGER competitors already having the iPhone.
    The iPad 3 is also in the rumor mill, but, is now rumored to be delayed until spring 2012.

    Personally, I see an anemic Christmas season shaping up, with the biggest sales being in iPhones and iPads.

      It’s funny how I have owned a macbook pro and a 27″ mac for 2 years. I have had zero issues with the computers and couldn’t be happier. i recently upgraded to the i phone 4 about two weeks ago, again operates so smooth w my laptop couldn’t be happier. Now I am as far to the right as one can get. I wouldn’t normally admit to owning apple products as I always viewed them as hippie. After know that this idiot is on the board it changes everything. b 4 I spout off that I am getting rid of my apple products I am writing a letter to apple and inform them I will never buy a apple product again so as long as this billionaire idiot represents the company. bite my nose off to spite my face. I am disgusted with myself. Need to smoke a bowl and play some hackie sack. ps, I throw away the apple stickers they give you with a purchase.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple kicked him off their board of directors… at least this time he can’t claim to have created it… (internet). IDIOT!!!
