Iran Airs Alleged ‘Confession’ of Woman Once Sentenced to Stoning

Iranian TV has aired the alleged confession of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the women accused of being unfaithful to her husband and then murdering him, and who was initially set to be stoned — now possibly hanged — for the alleged crimes.

The Iranian government created the TV special, which includes a re-enactment of the supposed incident, to quell dissenters who think Ashtiani is innocent. But before the special even hit the airwaves it had already drawn harsh criticism. For example, Amnesty International criticized the broadcast saying it violates international standards for a fair trial by having Ashtiani implicate herself.

“If the authorities are seeking to use this ‘confession’ to try to construct a new case against her, for a crime that she’s already been tried and sentenced for, we would condemn this in the strongest terms,” Philip Luther, the deputy director of Amnesty’s Middle East and North Africa program, said in a statement, and reported by Al Jazeera.

Ashtiani has already received 99 lashes for having “illicit relationships” with two men after her husband’s death.

Earlier this week, pictures and footage of Ashtiani leaked prompting many outlets to report that she had been freed. Those reports were later denied by the Iranian government, which then revealed its plans for the taped confession and re-enactment.

Both Ashtiani’s son and lawyer, who are fighting for her release and maintain her innocence, have been arrested.

Why do news organizations pretend to attempt to rationally analyze the actions of the justice systems in third world countries?

Seeing how these people think, they’ll most likely end up stoning her and then hanging her. After that her son and lawyer will never be heard from again. Just another day in the life of your average Iranian…

A murder conviction gets you hanged instead of stoned? I’d much rather be hanged if I had a choice. Seems a no-brainer to me!

Now if only the wives of the Iranian leaders will think to rescue their country from Islamic oppression via the same means.

I don‘t think Iran realizes it’s not whether or not the woman is guilty that horrifies the rest of us, it’s that they think STONING is an acceptable punishment for a State in the modern world to give to one of its people. But we’ve known that the Iranian government were all barbarous sociopaths, so I don’t see why we should really be surprised.

I‘m afraid she’s a dead woman. They are just setting up the “proof” to kill her.

“Do not resist. Go along with our twisted and contrived versions of actual events and make a confession to our trumped up charges against you so that we may publicly execute you as a warning to your countrymen, or we kill your family and your lawyer too. We have already arrested them. Do you want us to kill them too? You shall be a martyr that serves a purpose for the public good but their deaths shall have no meaning. Confess! Or they too shall die… and die in your shame.”

Yeah. That‘s probably a pretty good approximation in reader’s digest format.

I would encourage those of you who have the courage to do so to watch “The Stoning of Soraya M.”, about the murder by stoning of a woman who had patently done no wrong. I watched it on Netflix. Do it in her memory, and in dedication to the principle of universal justice.

In Islam, women have to prove their innocence; yet if men are accused, they must be proven guilty. It is a two-tiered system that is identical in theory and practice to South African apartheid. You have one set of rules and requirements for one set of citizens, and another altogether for those who run the system.

Can anyone seriously argue that these sadistic, perverted old men that run Iran are holy? They are fools, whose folly will be revealed beyond the possibility of doubt when they are cast into the flames reserved for the evil.

For our part, whether we ever act militarily against Iran or not, we need to be clear that if human rights exist anywhere, they exist everywhere. There can be no partitioning. There can be no moral demand for equality in this nation that does not extend to the much more burning need for equality before the law in other nations.

So what, they will never change. Why in the hell are we trying to change them? Why are we over there trying to win their hearts and minds. What a waste of men and treasure. Come home and protect our borders. Let’em continue self annihilation.

It’s difficult enough to change a single person in any manner, much less a whole civilization. Democracy can only come to people who wish to embrace it and cannot be forced on someone. Or how the old Buddhist saying goes: Change must come from within.

One person has been killed and at least one other hurt as two explosions rocked the centre of the Swedish capital, Stockholm, reports say.

A car blew up near the busy shopping street of Drottninggatan, and another explosion hit nearby shortly afterwards, AP quoted police as saying.

A man’s body was discovered after the second blast, the agency reported.

Swedish Aftonbladet newspaper showed images of a burning white car. The cause of the blasts is not yet known.

Rescue services spokesman Roger Sverndal said the car which exploded had contained gas canisters, AP reported.

A former AP worker, Gabriel Gabiro, was close to the second blast.

“I saw some people crying, perhaps from the shock,” he told the agency.

“There was a man lying on the ground with blood coming out in the area of his belly, and with his personal belongings scattered around him.”
