Iran Airs Footage of Captured U.S. Spy Drone

TEHRAN, Iran (The Blaze/AP) — Iran’s state TV has broadcast video of the purported stealth U.S. drone that Tehran says its forces downed earlier this week.

The more than two minutes of footage shows Iranian officials inspecting what state TV identifies as the high-tech RQ-170 Sentinel drone, which appeared to be intact.

Here‘s BBC’s report including footage aired:

The chief of aerospace division of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards, Gen. Ami Ali Hajizadeh, says an electronic ambush by Iranian forces brought down the drone, which Business Insider notes would explain why the drone seems to be in good condition. We reported on Sunday that the Iranian state media said the drone was brought down because it violated Iranian airspace.

Hajizadeh said Thursday the aircraft was controlled by two stations in Afghanistan and the United States via satellite.

Fox News has more on the consequences of Iran possessing this drone and how its knowledge of U.S. technology could help it conceal things like a nuclear weapons program:

U.S. officials have acknowledged losing the drone, and former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton said on Fox News the capturing of the drone was a “setback”. He says that the military considered destroying the drone even sending in a Navy SEALS team, but decided not to.

Iranian state radio has said the unmanned aircraft was detected over the eastern town of Kashmar, some 140 miles (225 kilometers) from the border with Afghanistan.

      If it’s real why is it still sitting there? Seems to me we have the ability to blow it to pieces. Since our president is so strong on foriegn policy, enough to take out bin Laden and 27 other top commanders, that he should have the cojones to order this thing blown up where it sits.

      I thought it looked like a model also,but It looks like it is ours. However, the article I read says it seems those who engineered the drone left off of it sophisticated secret stealth features on purpose for the fact they figured these would be found or brought down, just do to the nature of the mission. SO not much is lost. Here is the article.

      Not a model, it’s real. This is a potentially large loss to us militarily, but Iran did not bring this down with cyber-warfare. That is high-larious. Most likely, it lost communications, and then it simply ran out of gas circling, and then landed itself. That is why there is no damage.

      Most of the technology that makes these things possible is electronic, and not easily reproducible by someone who gets there hands on it. It would be like you trying to make your own IPad2, just because you have one in your hands, doesn’t mean you have a clue what makes it tick, or how to manufacture one yourself.

      russia and china already sent their engineers to check it out but because it was ‘lost to US officials the buzz online by techs from here in Arizona says that someone HACKED it to bring it down. it‘s in too good a condition to think it was ’shot down’

      it seems that this was a drone well over the border in Afghanistan territory and it landed with no damage so this is not good no matter what

Sure it’s interesting and I can agree with a lot that he says, but I’m still not comfortable with the fact that he would allow Iran to get nukes. Israel would obviously stop them and Paul has indicated he wouldn’t begrudge them that right, but I would prefer it if he took a stronger stance.

      Something looks fishy regarding this drone. Its not the haze grey it should be and it should have atleast some US markings. If it is ours, we let it land there intentionally. What a better way to listen in on their conversations with open mikes. It looks like a harmless prototype which we could afford to set down over there. We did it to the Russians who would collect our sonobuoys dropped by P3 Orions to listen for their subs. The Russians were known to come and scoop them out of the water…knowing this, we stuck a microphone in it. They placed it in the captains cabin…guess what, we knew what was going on in that sub for awhile. They soon caught on!

      Wonderful. Now billions more R&D to our top stealth tech drones have fallen into the hands of the Iranians, Chinese, and Russians overnight. I will say it like I have said before. Why the H*** don’t they come equipped with some sort of remote self destruct mechanisms to at least prevent our technology from being stolen, reverse engineered and ultimately used against us.

      Questions we’ll never hear answered.
      If it crashed, where is the damage?
      If it was a mechanical failure, how did Iran know where to find it?
      Drones have GPS, and if they lose control, they return home. Why didn’t this one?
      If it was “stealth”, how did Iran know about it?
      If it was shot down. where are the bullet holes?

      Something isn’t right with this story, is it just me?

      We absolutely could blow this thing into paricles people but you gota take a step back and see the whole picture. The reason we cant just send in a missle, drone or whatever to pulverize this thing is because it could quickly escalate into an international incident. I know were all used to America just bombing wherever she pleases but trust me you dont want this War. We or Israel attacks Iran, Iran attacks oil fields and key targets in Israel with rockets (they dont have nukes people) then we respond to aid Israel. Then Syria, Russia and China respond with either aid, arms, or troops. Then you have world war 3, all for a secretive drone

      This Is A Copy Of The German Luftwaffe’s Stealth Horton 229 Designed And Build By The Horton Brothers Aircraft Company.

      This fighter was flown against B17s over Germany but only a few were ever build. It had superior performance to the ME-262 jet fighter and was two to three times as fast as anything the Allies had. Why did it take so long for the US to copy it?

      The Luftwaffe Horton 229 Was Designed As A Nuclear Bomber To Attack The Continental USA And Was Flown In Late 1944.

      The Germans needed a stealth fighter-bomber to penetrate US radar defenses and drop a A-bomb (that they never had) on NYC. The Horton 229 had the range to fly one-way to NYC. The Iranians now have a Horton 229 stealth bomber that can carry an A-bomb. Thanks a lot Obama.

      How did the Germans loose WWII? What other German WWII technology has the US build. What did the Russians capture from the German’s? The Germans could not have designed and build all of these advanced technology weapons systems without digital computers. Did our advanced 1950s computer technology come from Germany?

      This is either an innacurate reconstruction of the pieces of the alleged captured drone or a model made from looking at the pieces of the drone.

      But, hey, they didn’t have to go to all that bother, the real drone is pictured online for the whole world to see. Anyone could make a better one from those. But, maybe Iran is too paranoid after all those computer viruses to let their military use Google.

      The front grille on the real drone is set back into the body. The shape of the center ‘fuselage’ is all wrong, especially at the front. The front of the real drone‘s fuselage is shaped like Batman’s head from above.. The wings on the real RQ-170 drone are sharp at the front and the back.

      Conclusion: This is a fake and not a very good one at that.

      That is very possbile, they built the chip in it and had a back up frequency, our govt tends to think outsourcing our military technology is smart.

      But it would be better if we had a good GPS lock on it and just couldn’t communicate. Then we could follow it to all of their secret facilities. But probably didn’t think of that.

      most likely. There was a story out a few weeks ago that 1200 mil. hardware was inspected and 78% had counterfit Chinese parts.
      remember what happened to S.Team 6 helicoptor, sold to China.
      remember the drones had virus issuses. the counterfit CSCO routers the gov bought, the harddrives that had virus in the firmware. the constant hacking into the Pentagon.

      Those desert rats are actually really smart. They’ve learned from history, and much of it from our history. How do you think we beat the strongest nation in the world (Brittain). With guerilla tactics, not conventional warfare. We couldnt stand toe to toe with the British at the time with an unorganized and lightly trained at best Regulars we had so we resorted to the Militia and guerilla tactics. They too have now aided in bankrupting us. Everytime we spend billions of dollars in research and outiftting countermeasures for IED.s and RPGs they simply just change their tactics. You know the dumb desert rats figured out how to rig a safety sensor for a garage door up that they could turn on when a US vehicle passed thru it to set off the IED via infrared beam being broke.       I absolutely agree we should not be in any foriegn country unless they directly attack us. Little brown men in caves didnt attack us on 9/11 and the Iraq thing is shown now to be a lie therefore we should pull out and cut our losses IMMEDIATELY. Karzai has already stated that if we attack Pakistan he would stand with them so why would we worry about the fate of his country if we suddenly pull out? We just announced we now have a missle that can reach any point on the planet in mere minutes. Why do we need 130 bases around the world? I can tell you firts hand all we do is piss the local population off in every country Ive been in. So I absolutely agree with what you said 100% I just dont think you should underestimate them and belittle them to desert rats. They are like we were in the beginning of our nation as we fought the British.       Anyone who believes that the above pictured drone is an American asset is a dunce. If you look up images of the drone you will see that this obviously is not the same craft. It is a cheap mockup that they hashed together. The most noticeable detail is the shape of the leading edge of the wing. The real drone has a much sharper profile. The Iranian prop looks like it would make a better hovercraft skirt. However, it is perceivable that since drones are largely just a flying computer, they Iranians could have taken out a drone with EMI. I’m not exactly sure what type of EMI protections you can put on a drone, but some level of protection is possible I am sure. That being said, the impact of the drone hitting the ground at uncontrolled speed and trajectory along with an explosive fuel cell should almost certainly guarantee that little in the way of recoverable technology survived the crash.

      @Apply — good idea on the self-destruct; yet a question I just thought of as a possible (very remote one at that); recall a few weeks back the fact of military drone stations had the video system being compromised by an outside source? Could it have been done to reprogram the drone or even to fly it into Iran and land in one piece?

      I read on another news site i think it was ABC news that the Drones circle when they lose signal then when fuel runs out they glide to land. It doesn’t take a freakin rocket scientist to figure out our enemies probably just found the frequency we use and used some form of signal jammer or sent a stronger signal over that signal to block communications and guess what. They got a free US Drone.

      Dunces should of had a bunch of fail safes in it so it would explode. Best yet a nice time delay so it explodes around 3 hours after touching down. The Iranians would run grab their “prize” then ut oh… Boom. Oh wait that probably isn’t politically correct is it?

      Our government has already stated we lost a drone over Iran. Unless you are in the government drone program, I don‘t think you have the knowledge to say this isn’t our drone. We are coming up with new aircraft all the time and the government doesn’t always TELL us about it or show us a picture.

    I understand the US had planned a covert operation to retrieve or destroy the drone, or possibly simply bomb the facility into oblivion but the Administration decided to forestall all attempts so as NOT to OFFEND Iran. I am so glad we are so compassionate as not to offend Iran. That is the last thing I want my government to do,. We shouldn’t offend anyone. Tear down Nativity scenes it might offend an atheist, a Muslim, Jews, Buddhists, Shinto or the Dali Lama himself! ,

      How about we just stop flying military aircraft over Iran. That way they can’t ever shoot one down or EMI it out of the air (more probable). Besides, don’t we have the ability to take a picture of just about anywhere on earth several times a day from space? Why do we need to waste fuel, man hours, and equipment spying on anyone?

      On the contrary, the aircraft was flying in Afghan air space but lost communication and landed in Iran. At least that is the story from the government.

      Personally, whoever managed to screw up bad enough to let something that valuable just disappear needs to be blacklisted from the Department of Defense or ever owning a weapon. The stealth design and equipment is an unforgivable loss and anyone getting their hands on it has a chance to drastically shift the balance of power. That technology cannot be allowed to fall into the hands of the Iranians or anyone else for that matter.

      That being said, I don’t want any our our soldiers being put at risk retrieving it.I say find the hangar and either we or the Israels blast that drone into liquified scrap.

    Okay they captured the drone intact; there is no damage from AAA or a SAM system and it means it came down in one peice under control, not in a crash.

    Conclusion — Obama ordered it given to them so it will now be in turn passed onto China and Russia.

    Okay, did Achmead build that in his garage, the looks like a cheap RQ-170 knock off that they built in some back alley camel shop, it doesn’t look air-worthy, the wings are sagging and it looks mishapen and there are several differences from actual ones, that looks like a propaganda prop built by IRAN…

    I highly highly doubt Iran has any form of capability to have commandeered the control of the craft, even if Russia supplied them equipment, they‘d have had to have broken the encrypted signal and would’ve had to have pre-built control avionics software to take control of that craft to bring it down in a controlled fashion…

    At best Iran would’ve only been able to scramble the UAV signal and if that were the case, there is an onboard GPS fall back system that is the craft losing operational control it will return to a predesignated airspace to have its signal reacquired, also there is a self-destruct pack in the onboard electronics package that if the aircraft is out of signal control for a period of time, it will self-destruct keeping it from being captured… this Iran propaganda mock-up is a hoax.

      actually, Iraqi insurgents were able to hack into the predator drones with off the self software and were able to see what the drone saw. Not much of a stretch to take control. Remember the key logging virus the has infected the entire predator fleet? They haven’t gotten rid of it, and it is likely in these stealth drones as well.

    Iranian Gov: “Hey, we captured an US drone.”
    US Gov: “We have lost no drones.”
    Iranian Gov: “Yeah, you totally did, and we have it.”
    US Gov: “We may have lost contact with a drone.”
    Iranian Gov: “That’s because we are hauling it back to Tehran as you speak.”
    US Gov: “Maybe you did, maybe you didn’t.”
    Iranian Gov: “Check out YouTube.”
    US Gov: “Okay, so we lost a drone. We are so disappointed in you Iran. We won’t do anything about it though.”

      How about a conspiracy theory; BHO’s administration GAVE it to Iran, probably under an “oath of secrecy. Then the Iranians, in a grand show of bravado, show it to the world after making up a semi-acceptable story to cover their possession of a drone that appears to be in pristine condition.

      At the very least, this thing was glided in for a “crash landing”. But, look at the front edges of the fuselage, there is no evidence of any ground contact! Even the sand would have damaged the paint on this thing, and it shows NOTHING! This drone was landed intact WITH landing gear!

      And they “decided” not to destroy it…WHY!!!

      Can you say traitors in the administration? The only way that the commander on scene would not press the self-destruct button is that he was ORDERED not to or the front-line guys didn’t even know the Iranians have it. This whole thing stinks to high heaven of treason and coverup.

      It is reasonable to assume that sooner or later one of these high tech platforms would malfunction and crash or be shot down by the country they are spying on. Would it not also be reasonable to engineer a fail-safe destruction module into the unit to trigger an explosive/incendiary device to obliterate the platform before it ever hit the ground? This seems so fundamental to preserving the hard-won technology that went into it. Now we have just given that technology away. Time to build a better one – one that is less likely to be jammed electronically or loose touch with its controller, and one that incinerates itself if it goes wrong. Jeez.

      When you have a nation like Iran who is saying “we need nuclear energy” – really?!?!? You’re sitting on one of the largest resources for oil, you’re not concerned with the enivronment and have no plans of joining the kyoto accord, so you need nuclear energy why? Then they publicly continue to repeatedly say “Was must wipe Israel off the map – death to America!” This is the same nation that attacked our embassy, held our people for over a year hostage and basically declared war on us first…

      I‘d think you’d want to keep an eye on them…

      If for example we never kept an eye on Cube in Oct 1962 we‘d never have known the Soviets just set up dozens of medium range nuclear missile silo’s with over 180 missiles delivered to Cuba and we would’ve been ripe for a surprise attack with a 4-6 minute launch to impact scenario…
