Iran Begins New Military Exercises Near Strait of Hormuz

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran began ground military exercises Saturday and defiantly warned that it could cut off oil exports to “hostile” European nations as tensions rise over suggestions that military strikes are an increasing possibility if sanctions fail to rein in the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.
Tehran has stepped up its rhetoric as international pressure mounts over allegations that it is seeking to develop atomic weapons, a charge it denies.
(Related: Iran Vows Support to Anyone Confronting ‘Cancerous’ Israel)
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has issued stern warnings against any possible U.S. or Israeli attacks against Tehran’s nuclear facilities. Western forces also have boosted their naval presence in the Gulf led by the American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.
The new military maneuvers came weeks after Iran rolled out its troops and arsenals in an unprecedented display of military readiness, with 10 days of naval maneuvers that included the first threats to block Gulf oil tankers in early January. Ground forces also were sent on winter war games – against what a Tehran military spokesman called a “hypothetical enemy” – with U.S. forces just over the border in Afghanistan.
Plans for new Iranian naval games in the Persian Gulf off the country’s southern coast have been in the works for weeks.
Iranian state media reported the ground maneuvers of the elite Revolutionary Guard started Saturday near Jiroft, 745 miles (1,200 kilometers) south of the capital Tehran. No more details were available, but it appeared that they were small-scale exercises and not linked to the planned major naval maneuvers near the Strait of Hormuz, the route for one-fifth of the world’s crude oil.
Iranian officials and lawmakers repeatedly have threatened to close the strait, which funnels down to a waterway no wider than 30 miles (50 kilometers) at the mouth of the Gulf, in retaliation for sanctions that affect Iran’s oil exports. But they have as yet made no attempts to disrupt shipping through the waterway, and the U.S. and other Western powers have warned they would respond swiftly to any attempts at a blockade.
Washington and its allies fear Iran could use its uranium enrichment labs – which make nuclear fuel – to eventually produce weapons-grade material. Tehran insists it only seeks reactors for energy and medical research.
So far, the West is relying primarily on the threat of economic sanctions to pressure Iran over its nuclear program.
Tehran has claimed that the most recent move – EU sanctions approved on Jan. 23, which include an oil embargo and the freezing of central bank assets – will be ineffective, while members of Iran’s parliament say they have drafted a bill which would cut off the flow to Europe early, before it can find alternative suppliers.
Iran’s Oil Minister Rostam Qassemi also said Saturday the Islamic Republic would “definitely” cut off oil to “hostile” European countries, without specifying which ones they were.
However, he said Iran is moving toward reducing reliance on oil revenues, a hint that Tehran is preparing for the worst. Oil sales account for about 80 percent of Iran’s foreign revenues.
Qassemi, the oil minister, reiterated Iran‘s argument that the EU oil embargo will not cripple Iran’s economy, claiming that the country already has identified new customers to replace the loss in European sales that accounted for about 18 percent of Iran’s exports.
“We’ve made the necessary planning to deal with that. We have friends in the world and will assist each other,” he said. “We won‘t back down a single step under political pressures and won’t give up our right position even if we can’t sell a single barrel of oil.”
In contrast, he said, the ban would rebound on oil consumers.
“If Iran’s oil is totally deleted from the market, then a terrible tension will be created. The costs will be intolerable. The option of imposing a total ban on Iran’s crude exports is unenforceable,” he said.
Qassemi also reinforced Iran‘s warning to Saudi Arabia and other fellow OPEC members against boosting production to offset any potential drop in Tehran’s crude exports, saying the cartel should not be used as a political weapon against a member state.
Israel, for its part, has so far publicly backed the efforts by the U.S. and European Union for tougher sanctions that target Iran’s oil exports. But Israeli leaders have urged even harsher measures and warn that military action remains a clear option despite Western appeals to allow time for the economic pressures and isolation to bear down on Iran.
Khamenei, in a nationally broadcast speech on Friday, staked out a hard line after suggestions by Israel that military strikes are an increasing possibility if sanctions fail to rein in Iran’s nuclear program.
He pledged to aid any nation or group that challenges Israel and said any military strikes would damage U.S. interests in the Middle East “10 times” more than they would hurt Iran. The comments also may signal that Tehran’s proxy forces – led by Lebanon’s Islamic militant group Hezbollah – could be given the green light to revive attacks on Israel as the showdown between the rivals intensifies.

We may not know exactly when or what, but their certainly seems to be a major event looming on the horizon! A few years ago I wrote this song to express my perception of how I felt events are unfolding. At the time I did not know things would occur this fast! As time went by it became clearer that we are in a special time period. The way events are happening should make you want to pay attention and take heed! I may or may not be right but I think we may be near or in

Posted on February 5, 2012 at 12:05amIran is getting squeezed more than ever by sanctions by the US and Europe. The value of their currency is dropping and the value of their oil (to China and other customers) has dropped because the demand for Iranian oil has been reduced dramatically by the new sanctions. Iran has internal dissent and their government is held together only by brute force measures on their population.
Iranian leaders aren’t stupid. People here on this website say the US is “weak” because of Obama, despite the terrorists he kills weekly and the unprecedented pressure on the Iranian economy. Nobody else says that though, least of all the Iranians. The Iranian leaders aren’t as stupid as the people who post here thank God. They know a war over the Persian Gulf would lay to waste their economy (in about an hour, with a couple of thousand cruise missiles and air sorties) and likely result in the overthrow of the government.
The only wild card is this: Iran is a theocracy, with rulers who think God is telling them what to do. When rulers of a country think God is talking to them and telling what to do, displacing their rational mind, that’s scary. It’s scary with the government of Iran, and it’s scary in the US.

Posted on February 5, 2012 at 4:47amTo me, it’s is obvious that Iran is close to having a weapon capable nuclear weapon. Why the threats with out a weapons? No threats have been followed through on since it isn‘t quite ready or the steps afterward haven’t been agreed upon. The question will be can Iran survive without the oil revenue before the US economy collapses from the lack of oil. Iran’s military is no match four ours and I can bet that an assault on Iran has already been planned and is waiting to be implemented. For that reason, no troops are leaving Afganistan, in fact, more are on their way, but I doubt that means anyone is coming home.

The age of Nuke Warfare and the destruction like Nagasaki and Hiroshima are long past. Now it is possible to totally shut down any country in minutes.
The country that strikes first wind – I only pray that we wake up and are the first. Iran has missiles now well within range of US Soil in Vneezuela. Missile subs deployed to patrol off the coast of the USA as well capable of shutting us down in minutes.
Could this be what Khameni’s following statement referred to last week?
“In light of the realization of the divine promise by almighty God, the Zionists and the Great Satan (America) will soon be defeated,” Ayatollah Khamenei, the Iranian supreme leader, is warning.
Khamenei, speaking to hundreds of youths from more than 70 countries attending a world conference on the Arab Spring just days ago, told a cheering crowd in Tehran that “Allah’s promises will be delivered and Islam will be victorious.”
Makes me wonder.

For sure, Iran will simultaneously have large groups (assisted by the cartels) ready to stream up across our so-called by ‘Nappy’ – “secure” – border from Mexico as well as activate sleeper cells already established within our boundaries.

A “safe zone” on a battlefield is like putting a slow lane on a nascar track. Eisenhower and Roosevelt knew that a long drawn out war cost too many lives and too much money. Also you lose the will of the people when war goes on too long. Its right there in “The art of War” by Sun Zu.

Measured in dollars, the nation is on pace this year to ship more gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel than any other single export, according to U.S. Census data going back to 1990. It will also be the first year in more than 60 that America has been a net exporter of these fuels.”

Posted on February 5, 2012 at 10:05amyou are right, Jimmy Carter allowed our dictator (who was at least our friend) get overthrown by those currently running Iran.
Report Post »Still, doesn’t justify the American bloodlust to kill the people who are trapped under the thumb of Khomeni and Admenajab because of our past mistake. War tends to hurt everybody, but those intended. WHy not send Mr Kyle over there to take care of the folks in charge. Cleaner, more efficient and cost a bunch less.

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 1:49pm“Iran‘s [powerful] Revolutionary Guard…” I remember when those words and similar were written about Iraq’s military. When they came face to face with our troops they became boot kissing surrender monkeys. We need to come face to face with these pukes also and show them what a real fighting force looks like. We’ll goose step their arses to Tehran, herd them like geese… then let the Ron Paul pacifists play guard duty. Can you at least handle THAT… weenies for Paul? You want a border guard… well there ya’ go. Show us how it’s done!

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 2:22pmI was actually considering posting something similar about them saying that about Iraq, without the RP bashing of course. You’re right man, they were telling us how powerful Iraq was and we crushed them bad. I had to opportunity to meet a tank comander from Desert Storm, studying Computer Science, when I worked there. He and I talked a lot about our experiences. One of the things that stands out is what he called Iraqi’s, which YOU’LL get a kick out of. (I did at first, but had a change of heart since) Anyway… “Crunchies”.
Oh and did you catch how their “powerful” revolutionary guard all had beards? You know why that’s a BAD idea…. Pfft, powerfull!

Not everyone in the U.S. can afford $10 – $12 per gallon gas.

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 2:43pmI can’t afford it either, and worry about China and Russia jumping.

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 2:53pm“Crunchies” is a good term. I mainly called them cowardly POS… who didn’t have the intestinal fortitute nor the character traits that our military has and has always had. I fully expected most of them to fight to the death like real warriors when in relative closer quarters, but instead grovelled like a bunch of candy arses. Now, many did fight to the death and we were happy to make that happen for them too.
As far as my Ron Paul bashing? You guys with your multiple accounts bashing all the Conservatives here and the other candidates can handle little ‘ol me… right?

Unless you support Obama – i dont know why you are so concerned about RP. i am a very strong supporter and i hardly mention him. Have you ever heard of ‘just war theory’? Google it. Iran’s economy is in shambles – i hope they self destruct before we take over another country

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 3:35pmSOYBOMB. You don‘t have to mention Ron Paul’s name. All I had to do is read one comment from you last week and knew. It’s not hard. Like reading Obama groupies for the most part.

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 1:38pmIt continues to look like the Iranians are quite determined to “wash the world in blood” and hasten the return of their evil 12th Imam. I have the feeling that this year will be a turning point in the history of this world, and not a good one either. War, death, poverty, hunger and misery are coming to the people of this country as well as the world, and it would be a very good idea to prepare for it.

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 1:43pmHonestly if we are not at war by the beginning of summer with Iran I will be suprised; from what the local news was saying the other day we have three carrier groups in the area; so the only things I can figure on are:
A. Israel is about to strike, Obama wants to protect his radical allies.
B. He wants Iran to strike so he can get us going into the next world war.
C. He wants Iran to strike so he can declare a national emergency and seize power.
D. All the above.
I honestly can see the Iranian forces attack our troops and ships; then old Obama tells them not to act even in self-defense.

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 3:13pm@Axel – I know, Iran is a wild card in the middle east equation; they are the one unknown variable, and I would not put it past them to attack our homeland with radiological devices in addition to any other WMD’s they have – their leader wants blood for the 12th Imadi to appear, what better way than here in the home turf of the one they call the ‘great satan.’

Posted on February 4, 2012 at 4:23pmI agree with both you and “snow” in her post below. THIS is going to be a very BAD year throughout the world and especially in our own country given our governments obvious efforts to force communism down our throats, destroy our constitution and religious freedoms. I fear Martial Law will be the excuse and in one short stroke, we are then considered combatants if we resist.
Iran needs to be stopped NOW!! (Should have been done YEARS ago instead of playing political games and loosing the advantages we then had.) The result of procrastination will mean more of our military lives – and civilians here or abroad will be lost in the ensuing struggle of economics, religions and politics.
As BOTH of you say so wisely – BE PREPARED!!
