Iran Claims It’s Produced First Nuclear Fuel Rod

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranian scientists have produced the nation’s first nuclear fuel rod, a feat of engineering the West has doubted Tehran capable of, the country’s nuclear agency said Sunday.

The announcement marks another step in Tehran’s efforts to achieve proficiency in the entire nuclear fuel cycle – from exploring uranium ore to producing nuclear fuel – despite U.N. sanctions and measures by the U.S. and others to get it to halt aspects of its atomic work that could provide a possible pathway to weapons production.

Tehran has long said it is forced to seek a way to manufacture the fuel rods on its own, since the sanctions ban it from buying them on foreign markets. Nuclear fuel rods are tubes containing pellets of enriched uranium that provide fuel for nuclear reactors.

Iran‘s atomic energy agency’s website said the first domestically made rod has already been inserted into the core of Tehran’s research nuclear reactor. But it was unclear if the rod contained pellets or was inserted empty, as part of a test.

“Scientists and researchers at the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran have succeeded in producing and testing the first sample of a nuclear fuel rod,” said the announcement.

The U.S. and some of its European allies accuse Iran of using its nuclear program as a cover to develop atomic weapons. Iran denies the charge, saying the program is for peaceful purposes only and is geared toward generating electricity and producing medical radioisotopes to treat cancer patients.

Although the rods are easier to make, Iran is also seeking to produce the pellets with enriched uranium. But so far it is not known whether Iranian nuclear scientists have been able to overcome the technical hurdles to do so.

Tehran focused on domestic production of nuclear fuel rods and pellets in 2010, after talks with the West on a nuclear fuel swap deal ended in failure as Iran backed down on shipping a major part of its stock of enriched uranium abroad in return for fuel.

The announcement on the fuel rod came just a day after Tehran proposed a new round of talks on its nuclear program with six world powers. The last round of negotiations between Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany was held in January in Istanbul, Turkey, but it ended in failure.

The U.N. has imposed four rounds of sanctions on Tehran over its refusal to halt uranium enrichment, a process that can lead to making a nuclear weapon. Separately, the U.S. and the European Union have imposed their own tough economic and financial penalties.

It doesn’t matter. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is not a reliable source for anything. Even if they did create the rod … a weapon is a long time out.
And even if Iran did get a weapon it isn’t a threat to israel or us … and before you jump on me about Ron Paul … it was the Chief of Massad, Tamir Pardo, that said it just 3 days ago. Like Ron Paul, he said that this is all blown all out of proportion and that a Nuclear Iran is not a existential threat.

Exactly how many people in Iran even have access to electricity? And are we really expected to believe Iranian hospitals even know how to use radioisotopes? Why would Iran go through so much trouble to develop nuclear power that is clearly beyond its scientific knowledge. Do they truly understand what they‘re doing or are they just copying someone’s technology?

The US has assisted them several times. That’s right we helped kick start their nuclear program in 1950 under a program called Atoms for Peace. We continued to aid their nuclear program all the way up until the 1979 revolution.
France and Germany along with a few other nations have also assisted them in developing nuclear power.
And yes Iran has modern hospitals, and other modern infrastructure, Iran is a developed nation Iran is not like Afghanistan.

I do think we need to defend Israel and ourselves, don’t get me wrong. But according to the book I read (the Bible), it‘s only a matter of time before Israel’s enemies come after her (and probably us too). The enemy WILL at least attempt a nuclear bombing upon Israel (and also the great satan-us). There is no stopping it, only delaying it. I do think we should try to delay it as long as possible, but there is no stopping it.

According to the bible Israel has a watchman that never sleeps nor slumbers. It isn’t the USA. Furthermore I can’t find one single passage that requires me or anyone else to fight and die for another nation. EVER! The promise to Abraham “I will bless those that bless you and curse those that curse you” was made before the Jews existed, before the nation of Israel existed and before the man the nation would be named after existed. The statement was made in reference to the coming messiah. You christian, fascist, progressives don’t even know your own bible.

So you think it would be easier to defend the extremely long US border plus Alaska and Hawaii and all our territories from every possible direction as opposed to simply keeping our enemies from ever getting close? Defending the homeland means waiting to fight battles on American soil instead of challenging a known threat on our terms. Even if you could prove that having bases overseas creates animosity towards us, do you really believe it would go away if we left? They’d just see that as a victory and a sign that we are weak.

      ******************************************************

One of the more insane claims in Ron Paul’s newsletters was that the Israelis were behind the WTC bombings in 1993:

Whether [the 1993 World Trade Center bombing] was a setup by the Israeli Mossad, as a Jewish friend of mine suspects, or was truly a retaliation by the Islamic fundamentalists, matters little.

This claim is of course so ridiculous and absurd that even Paul has to protect himself by claiming that “a Jewish friend” told him about it. What a handy rhetorical device! If only Paul had had the foresight to couch all his racist remarks in the newsletters in this way, he wouldn’t have any problems right now! “As a black friend of mine once told me, 95% of all black people in DC are criminal or semi-criminal.” See how effective that is?

Dan has already covered some of the statements in Paul’s book (which he has not yet disavowed writing) that sound a lot like the newsletters he now disavows. One of the excerpts CNN did not cover was Paul’s section on the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut. You’ll never guess who Paul thinks was responsible:

The Middle East, in the last forty years, has soaked up billions of dollars in the name of American security and peace. The more we give Israel, the more we must give their Arab enemies. The height of this folly was vividly and tragically dramatized on Oct

You do realize that building seven wasn’t the only building other than the towers to be destroyed right? If I recall correctly, there were only three support structures on the lower floors holding up the upper floors of building seven. If any of those were damaged by falling debris and fires were weakening the integrity of the remaining structures, those support columns would collapse. It looks controlled because taking out the support columns is how you do controlled demolitions.

Maybe sanctions ARE a precursor or declaration of war?

“No oil will be permitted to pass through the key oil transit Strait of Hormuz if the West applies sanctions on Iran’s oil exports”, Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi warned on Tuesday… “We have no desire for hostilities or violence… but the West doesn’t want to go back on its plan‘ to impose sanctions”, he said.

“History teaches that war begins when governments believe the price of aggression is cheap.” Reagan

“The defense policy of the United States is based on a simple premise: The United States does not start fights. We will never be an aggressor. We maintain our strength in order to deter and defend against aggression – to preserve freedom and peace.” Reagan

“No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.” Madison

“Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all. …The nation which indulges toward another an habitual hatred or an habitual fondness is in some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to its affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its duty and its interest.” Washington

“If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.” Madison

“Perhaps it is a universal truth that the loss of liberty at home is to be charged to provisions against danger, real or pretended, from abroad.” Madison

Why don’t we try raising the price of gasoline in the United States by about $12 per gallon?:

“But this time, the situation is quite different. The Strait of Homruz transfers about 17-18mbpd of oil a day and there are no alternate routes to fully compensate for a disruption. The global inventory levels are down and physical markets are very tight.

As such, any military conflict in the area will easily spike crude prices to record highs. In fact, even fears of a military conflict will be enough to spook investors. And considering the amount of oil supply disruption such an action would cause combined with lower inventories, prices could easily double or triple by the time you blink.

Even though the Libyan oil crisis has garnered headlines, the Iranian geopolitical risk will not only be the hot topic in coming months, any resulting military conflict will make the Libyan oil crisis look like chickenfeed in comparison.”

Ron paul is a NON-INTERVENTIONALIST. At least be honest. Big difference. He believes that Israel is fully capable of kicking Iran back to the stone age…If we get out of their way, they will too. He also believes in DEFENSE, not OFFENSE, which what we have been doing for many many year. What has it brought us? 13 Trillion in debt, millions dead (a lot of them our boys!) For what? You think we need to kill foreign leaders with drones? Why? They will have a civil war in the Muslim countries without us and they will kill each other off for many years to come if we leave. We can stop buying their oil and drill here. We can bring our boys home to spend their paychecks here insteaad of in Germany and japan. Let the world figure out what they want…

If you havent figured it out yet, we are BROKE. What happens if we dont even have the money to bring our troops home? Oh my! Neocon fools! Get your head out of your a@@.

      >BAD,BADDOGGY. Just ‘cuz Ron Paul say’s it (that he’s a non-interventionist)… doesn’t make it so.

This so-called “non-interventionism” of Ron Paul is repugnant, ugly, and an absolute lie DOGGY. Doing nothing and pretending nothing is amiss while evil men drag others away in chains, provoke their neighbors and their neighbor’s allies is intervention… intervention on behalf of everything that is wrong in the world DOGGY.

If Paul was President of the United States during World War II, and as president he knew what we now know about the Holocaust, but the Third Reich presented no threat to the U.S., would he have sent American troops to Nazi Germany purely as a moral imperative to save the Jews?

No, he wouldn’t. he said “he wouldn’t risk American lives to do that. If someone wants to do that on their own because they want to do that, well, that’s fine, but I wouldn’t do that.” Heck DOGGY, Paul wouldn’t have even voted for the Civil Right Act. Yeah DOGGY, Paul’s a principled guy. Fact is he principles himself right out of the nomination for our Presidency whenever he runs.

Paul has said numerous times it was not worth it to intervene to save the Jews in World War II, because he’s an extreme isolationist… Paul “doesn’t think there’s any reason to intervene for human rights or any other reason anywhere on the planet.” And Paul would be the monkey with his hands over his eyes, mouth and ears regarding threats directly affecting our nat

They are permitted to build nuclear power plants per international agreements. In fact, they completed a nuclear power plant more than 30 years ago. We bombed it using Israeli pilots to deliver our bombs. This is all legal and legit.

Apparently, we wish to bomb their power plants once again.

Ask yourself who is whipping you into a frenzy to justify the purchase of more smart bombs and F16′s.

Ask yourself if you can afford it more than you can afford to maintain welfare abusers.

The more we meddle, the more we delay the Iranian people removing their corrupt leadership.

I think you’re missing the point. The United States of America is bankrupt and on the verge of financial ruin. We are about to fork over our financial sovereignty to an international government.

How is another war with a middle eastern country going to help? Our country is going to collapse, and the military and our defense are going to go with it. How is that going to make us safer?

      Postman,
      1. It was Iraq, not Iran.
      2. It was solely Israel’s action, The US admiistration was informed of it while it was in progress.

Regarding meddling delaying the uprising of Iranians. That’s nonsense that has no correspondence with realty whatsoever, crack open some history books . The autoritarian/totalitarian regimes have all the levers to prevent that from happening. You’ve no idea how hard it is for people to dislodge such regimes, without outside help/support. Without Reagan policies and StarWars psyops, the Soviet Bloc would be still in place with the countries behind the Iron Curtain still under the communist yoke.
Don’t tell me that they were on a trajectory of dissolution anyway, I lived there, I know.

      Let’s look at recent examples.

      1. Obama did not meddle — Iran’s “green” revolution. The result — fizzled.
      2. Obama did meddle — Egypt, Lybia. The result — changed.

Which brings a question, if one were to strengthen Islam, what would one do differently?

Well this story can’t be true. Ron Paul has informed us that Iran can never be a threat to the western world and it’s perfectly fine for them to have all the nuclear technology they can get. After all, Iran is a sovereign nation and all nations have moral equivalency.

So, we can all breath easy and pay no attention to what Iran is doing. Doesn’t that make everybody feel better?

DOGGY: “Keep poking the Islamic bear and they will come after us”

Right. let’s be very quiet lest we offend them. We should also stop eating pork, because it is highly insensitive and nearly blasphemous. Else they’d come after us.

Like in 1453 when they took Constantinople because the sound of resident’s breathing offended them. Beside the loud, loud church bells.
Or in 1529 and 1683 they had to go as far as gates of Vienna, because these infidels had those annoying, noisy bells on their churches, and they were slacking on production of young boys to fill the ranks of jannissaries. The objection that both times were in the middle of plague epidemic… still slackers. And these noisy bells!

Is the soldier in your icon image made of clay? I think it must be. You have a dhimmi mindset.
