TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranian authorities have detained a 55-year-old American woman on spying charges, a state-owned newspaper reported Thursday.
The daily IRAN said the woman had spying equipment hidden on her body when customs authorities detained her in the border town of Nordouz, 370 miles (600 kilometers) northwest of the capital Tehran. The report said she arrived in Iran from neighboring Armenia without a visa. It did not say when she was detained.
The woman is the fourth American Iran has arrested and accused of spying in less than two years.
In July 2009, Iran detained three Americans who were initially accused of crossing the border illegally from northern Iraq and later accused of spying.
The U.S. has dismissed the spying charges and says the three are innocent hikers. Their families have said if they crossed the border at all, it was inadvertent.
One of the three, Sarah Shourd, was released in September on compassionate grounds. Her fiance, Shane Bauer, and friend Josh Fattal remain in prison and could go on trial next month.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 11:59amMaybe they saw her as a ‘cougar’ sent by Isreal to help the valture they caught earlier. I thought I heard the ‘spy equipment’ were in her teeth. Could be they rubbed their lamp and the genie told them where to look for espionage problems.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 10:01amANY US Citizen that goes to Iran outside of Official Government business – deserves whatever they get. I don’t feel bad for people that are foolish and perhaps stupid.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 8:57amI feel bad for the woman but, what is she doing there? It’s like the 3 hikers. If you are dumb enough to go “hiking” in a war zone populated by muslim terrorists, maybe a little jail time will wise you you up a bit.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 8:22amIf she was attempting to help the Iranian people, it was noble but foolhardy. I feel for the Iranians too but they need to be encouraged to stand up for themselves.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 7:57amRight. America is in the business of employing 55 year old women to accomplish their spying. If she actually did have “spy equipment” on her person, my guess is she is there to learn about the treatment of women, or perhaps Christians, etc.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 9:01amLooks like they are able to secure their borders, unlike the good ole USA. She‘s lucky she didn’t try to fly out of their airport as I believe the Iranian TSA was the agency who was involved in training the American TSA, No fourth amendment in Iran. The biggest questions however, why would any American want to go to Iran? And, isn’t there some type of restrictions on Americans going to countries who are enemies of the US?

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 9:46amThis continues to amaze me…Why is it Slick Willie ie: Bill Clinton gets involved with the two woman detained in North Korea but not one high ranking U.S. Diplomat has made a trip to Tehran in regards to these people. Theres more than meets the eye with this. The Bamster has really chastized N.Korea but continues to mumble and grumble about Iran. Hmmmm interesting.
