Iran Hangs Former Soccer Player‘s ’Temporary Wife’ for Murder

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran on Wednesday hanged a former soccer player’s mistress — known as a “temporary wife — who was convicted of murdering her love rival, the player’s wife, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Shahla Jahed was hanged at dawn, after spending more than eight years in jail, IRNA said, in a case that has captivated the Iranian public for several years.

Jahed had become what is known as a “temporary wife” of former soccer star Nasser Mohammad Khani. She was charged in 2002 with stabbing to death Laleh Saharkhizan, the player’s wife, and convicted of murder in 2004 and again in 2009, after her appeal was denied.

Contracts with “temporary wives” are a legal way for Iranian men to have mistresses outside marriage, with the agreements lasting from between several hours to a few years.

Wednesday’s death sentence was based on the Islamic law of “qisas” — or eye for an eye retribution.

International human rights groups, including Amnesty International, had campaigned for Jahed’s punishment to be halted.

The IRNA report said that just before the hanging at Tehran’s Evin prison, the 40-year-old Jahed prayed peacefully, then burst into tears and cries, shouting for her life to be spared.

The victim’s son pulled the chair from under her feet as Jahed gasped for breath in the remaining moments of her life, the khabaronline.ir news website said. The former soccer striker, Khani, also attended the hanging.

The reports also said that judiciary officials spent almost an hour in talks with Saharkhizan’s family before the hanging, trying to convince them to spare Jahed’s life but were unsuccessful.

Prominent artists and respected cultural figures in Iran have also for years appealed to the victim’s family to show mercy.

Under Iranian law, men and women can commit to a “temporary marriage” for an agreed period of time after a certain amount of money is paid to the woman.

In Iran, men are allowed up to four legal wives under Islam and any number of temporary wives. Women can only be married to one man at a time.

Jahed initially denied any involvement in Saharkhizan’s killing but later confessed to the stabbing, only to subsequently withdraw the confession. Several Iranian experts have said she may have been wrongfully convicted.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, kidnapping and drug trafficking are crimes punishable with the death penalty in Iran.

Once again… the amazing logic of Islam… the rest of the world call them “whores”… they call them “Temporary Wives”.

I wonder if I can go to the bank in an Islamic nation and demand some “Temporary Money”… or perhaps I could go to a new car dealership and hop into my “Temporary Car” and drive away…

It’s beyond belief that we tolerate Islam in this world.

Well considering, that Iranian law is heavily one sided, leaning ALWAYS favorably towards the men involved in a crime, how can we be sure that she was guilty? I highly doubt it.

How quickly people are to judge, and that despite everything we know so far about the “religion of peace”. I am convinced, that she was nothing but a pawn, a stand in. And it cost her her life. And the real guilty person, the man in all of this, will walk away free, and unhindered to have many more temporary wives.

    Woo hoo

First to Untameable-Kate: Why do you think she was a whore? Did it ever occur to you that he wanted HER, he paid for HER, he used her. Albeit murder is never an option. But calling another woman a whore based upon a story you read is extremely unfair and disgusting. I am a woman and that word amongst a few others is a word I never use when referring to another woman, regardless of what she does. That being said, I am equally appalled by the fact that the victim’s own son pulled the chair out from under her, hence making him a murderer too but since he is a man it is ok. And for the adulterer soccer player to attend the execution is pretty sick too. He probably blames her for being pretty or poor or desperate. She spent 8 years in an Iranian prison! Wow, what a good time I bet that was. Can you imagine what she endured during those years? Whoa. But I do believe that murder requires punishment and even though hanging is a cruel method it is not new. We did it in our country once upon a time and even Utah still has the firing squad I believe (?). Sharia law is coming to this country and woe be unto us when that happens. Islam is a sick and twisted religion.

I’m with you Hollowpoint. How could a son do that to his mother even if she was guilty? I don’t care how much I might dislike someone I could not in good conscious stand there and watch them choke to death, must less pull the chair from under their feet. I believe they are going to be shocked when they get to heaven and find out what God has in store for them. May God Bless.

      hollowpoint and bookofwisdom,

I think you’re a little confused about the meaning of the words “victim” and “murder”.

The “victim” in this story was the soccer player’s wife, who was murdered by his mistress. That means the son in question did not execute his mother. He executed the woman who murdered his mother.

This woman was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. Even though you feel it may have been barbarous or distasteful, even if he may have taken some twisted pleasure from it, carrying out the punishment does not make the executioner a “murderer”.

Nevada has “temporary wives” with legal prostitution. One could say “Under Nevada law, men and women can commit to a “temporary marriage” for an agreed period of time after a certain amount of money is paid to the woman.” Which makes me wonder – is spending time with a prostitute grounds for divorce in Nevada if prostitution is legal? Why would a legal activity be grounds for divorce? Just wondering…

Not that I’m a proponent of Sharia law, but did anyone else notice that she had a trial and a second trial for an appeal, and that many years elapsed between the first guilty verdict and the punishment? I thought their judgments were usually swifter than that – like the time the Saudi’s stormed a hijacked plane after it landed, removed the passengers, wrapped towels around the necks of the hijackers and slit their throats before they ever got off the plane. Bravo when the guilt was so obvious! Meanwhile we’re still referring to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (the underwear bomber) and Nidal Malik Hasan (of the Fort Hood massacre) as “alleged” terrorists!

Mexico used to have a law allowed a husband to shoot his wife and her lover if he caught them ‘in flagrante delicto’. I think it was in the 1970′s that women began demanding that the law either be changed or that they be given the same right to shoot their husbands when caught. Guess what – the husbands lost that ‘privilege’. The day may eventually come when Iranian women demand more rights and freedoms as they have in other, more westernized, Muslim countries; but until then, Amnesty International et.al. are wasting their time.

I don’t believe in that religion.. I think men and women should be equal and get equal punishment.. However, she did kill someone so, I don’t really feel badly about her getting equal treatment. I think murderers should be murdered, why not. You had your life. You have a choice. You took a life. Goodbye?? You can’t be for death penalty in America and then be appalled by this…

The only thing appalling is that women get harsher treatment. Otherwise, so be it.

Seeing the way women and children are abused in these Muslim countries, who says she was given what could be called a fair trial. Who knows if any confession was coerced by torture. It seems a very convenient way of getting rid of a wife a man no longer loves, and getting rid of the pesky mistress too.

Maybe she did commit the murder. In that case, if the penalty for murder is death by hanging, so be it. The problem is that women are not given fair treatment there. Maybe someone else committed the murder, but she was a convenient scapegoat? Who knows? Men get away with a lot more than women do. Why is it okay for a man to have a “temporary wife?” Men are at liberty to have multiple wives and then countless temporary wives if they can afford them. The money is usually paid to the temporary wife’s family usually because that family really needs the money. This woman will be divorced at some point since she is only a temporary wife…then what? Her chances of obtaining a decent husband after being divorced is slim to none. She will either end up other temporary marriages or as a second, third or even fourth wife to an old man. She doesn’t have much say in the matter. Sounds very depressing.

This was all started by thier “prophet” Mohammed. He started temporary marriges so his soldiers could screw whores and somehow pretend it was moral.

One more indication of a sick and twisted culture.
