Iran Threatens U.S. Aircraft Carrier: Don’t Come Back To Persian Gulf

(The Blaze/AP) — Iran‘s army chief on Tuesday warned an American aircraft carrier not to return to the Persian Gulf in Tehran’s latest tough rhetoric over the strategic waterway, part of a feud with the United States over new sanctions that has sparked a jump in oil prices.

Gen. Ataollah Salehi spoke as a 10-day Iranian naval exercise ended near the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Gulf. Iranian officials have said the drill aimed to show that Iran could close the vital oil passage, as it has threatened to do if the United States enacts strong new sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program.

The strait, leading into the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea, is the only possible route for tankers transporting crude from the oil-rich states of the Persian Gulf to markets. A sixth of the world’s oil exports passes through it every day.

Oil prices rose to over $101 a barrel Tuesday amid concerns that rising tensions between Western powers and Iran could lead to crude supply disruptions. By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for February delivery was up $2.67 to $101.50 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The jump came a day after Iran test-fired a surface-to-surface cruise missile as part of the maneuvers, prompting Iran’s navy chief to coast that the strait is “completely under our control.”

Salehi’s warning for the U.S. aircraft carrier not to come back seemed aimed at further depicting the strait and the Gulf as under Iran’s domination, though there was little way to enforce his warning without military action. The strait is divided between Iran and Oman’s territorial waters, and international law requires them to allow free passage through it.

“We recommend to the American warship that passed through the Strait of Hormuz and went to Gulf of Oman not to return to the Persian Gulf,” Salehi was quoted as saying by the state news agency IRNA.

He said Iran’s enemies have understood the message of the naval exercises, saying, “We have no plan to begin any irrational act but we are ready against any threat.”

The aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis and another vessel exited the Gulf through the Hormuz Strait a week ago, after a visit to Dubai’s Jebel Ali port, according to the U.S. Navy’s Bahrain-based 5th Fleet. The Fleet did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Salehi’s warning.

Iran’s sabre-rattling over the strait and the Gulf has come in response to U.S. preparations to impose tough new sanctions that would ban dealings with Iran’s Central Bank. That would deeply hurt Iran’s oil exports since most countries and companies use the bank to conduct purchases of Iranian crude. Iran relies on oil revenues for around 80 percent of its budget, meaning a cut-off would be devastating to its already weakening economy.

President Barack Obama has signed the sanctions into law but has not yet enacted them. The sanctions would be the strongest yet by the U.S., aimed at forcing Tehran to back of its nuclear program, which many in the West say is intended to produce a nuclear weapon. Iran denies the claim, saying its program is peaceful.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said Tuesday that is country wants Europe to agree on similar sanctions against Iran by Jan. 30 to show its determination to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. He told the French television station i>TELE that there is “no doubt” that Iran is continuing with plans to build a bomb.

Iran’s naval maneuvers took place over a 1,250-mile (2,000-kilometer) stretch of water beyond the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, as well as parts of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, according to Iranian officials.

A leading Iranian lawmaker said Sunday the maneuvers served as practice for closing the strait if the West enacts sanctions blocking Iranian oil sales. Top Iranian officials made the same threat last week.

In response, the U.S. has said it remains committed to the “security and stability of the region” and will continue to deploy warships in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters.

The threat from Iran continues to be a primary concern in national security circles, but Business Insider offers this photo of U.S. military bases in the region to put things in perspective:

Iran Threatens U.S. Aircraft Carrier: Dont Come Back To Persian Gulf

In addition, some military analysts claim Iran’s recent saber rattling could be an attempt to compensate for limited ability to project military power in the region. While Iran has hailed its recent “long-range” Qhader missile test, the projectile only has a reported range of 124 miles. Plus, Iran has been accused of photoshopping military tests in the past to make their capabilities seem more menacing than they are.

It should be noted, however, that historically Iran has been most problematic– and deadly– for the West using low-tech, asymmetric warfare tactics and terrorist methods.

In the event of a showdown in the Persian Gulf– the third such event for the U.S. in two decades– Iran would likely use every means imaginable to strike back at the West, regardless of whether it missiles pose a real threat to the U.S. Fifth Fleet.

    See how smart we are;

The US has agreed in principle to release high-ranking Taliban officials from Guantánamo Bay in return for the Afghan insurgents’ agreement to open a political office for peace negotiations in Qatar, the Guardian has learned.

According to sources familiar with the talks in the US and in Afghanistan, the handful of Taliban figures will include Mullah Khair Khowa, a former interior minister, and Noorullah Noori, a former governor in northern Afghanistan.

More controversially, the Taliban are demanding the release of the former army commander Mullah Fazl Akhund. Washington is reported to be considering formally handing him over to the custody of another country, possibly Qatar.

The releases would be to reciprocate for Tuesday’s announcement from the Taliban that they are prepared to open a political office in Qatar to conduct peace negotiations “with the international community” – the most significant political breakthrough in ten years of the Afghan conflict.

Way to go Neocon. Have you ever been to that area of the world? Did you see the map? Do you realize what country lies between Iraq and Afghanistan? Let me ask you what you would be doing right now if a foreign nation had a multitude of bases in Canada and Mexico and had already thrown out the gov’t of one and forced elections in the other? Just curious.

Me personally, I have been to a few of those little stars on that map during my service and I don’t see why we need to be there. We cannot legitimately fight a group of radical religious halfway around the world who attacked us because we already had a military presence there. It just doesn’t make sense. While I agree that terrorists should die, the human responsible for the physical attacks on 9/11 met their end on that day. All that I see us accomplishing by going over to the middle east was allowing the radical jihadists to kill a few more thousand of our men and women.

We are not and cannot be the world police. If Iran wants to gain nuclear power, that is their deal. They are a sovereign nation. As much as you might fear the threat of being attacked with a weapon first successfully developed in your own country, you have to realize that an even greater threat would be to forsake all of our principled beliefs just because someone got scared.

It is when people get scared that they allow the gov’t to enact unconstitutional laws and lead us into foreign wars with no defined victory or enemy.

International Law is very clear on one element of warfare, blockading key international trade routes is a big “No No.” And guess who it falls to when those laws need to be enforced? It’s simple for us to say “It isn’t our war” but who else is there who will stand up and deal with the problem?

You forgot Geithner, Bernanke, every single traitorous Congressmember who voted for NDAA, every single traitorous police officer or militaryperson who would follow illegal orders to violate the constitution, etc.

Obama and Clinton’s status as traitors is a foregone conclusion. Throw Bush in there, Cheney, all of them.

They’re all traitors. The only one I see that isn’t a straight up TRAITOR is Ron Paul. Even Dennis Kucinich voted for Obamacare after his fantastic ride on Barack the Magical Unicorn’s back.

I remember protesting Kucinich outside his office in Lakewood with a gigantic sign that read “KUCINICH IS A TRAITOR” with some devil-hands graphics showing him handing over the Constitution for some Obamamoney after he voted for Obamacare.

I despise traitors. Traitors are the PLAGUE. That’s why I hate the actions of abusive public servants so much. They’re traitors…they betray the public trust.

We must clean our country out of traitors. Even if we have to do a seance with Joe McCarthy and start a new Anti-American Traitor hunt.

Just because the commander-in-chief is an idiot, don’t attribute that trait to the men and women serving valiantly to protect your right to state such drivel.

The U.S. military remains the strongest force on Earth. And it is due to the dedication of the VOLUNTEERS that serve. Iran is currently no threat to the United States, because they have not yet developed nuclear weapons. They just produce most of the IEDs that have killed and maimed our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. But do not for one moment doubt that they would use the nukes if they had them. It is time to put the mad dog back in its cage.

Ever since Carter let them depose the Shah and hold our embassy staff hostage for over 400 days, they have thought they are invincible. Sadly, with the Carter clone we currently have in the White House, they could be right. If our forces are given the opportunity, Iran could be turned into a giant molten glass ashtray. And our troops wouldn’t even break a sweat.

Hopefully the U.S. Merchant Marine can deploy enough dredges to clear the Strait of all the Iranian hulls on the bottom. That would be the only way the Iranians could block the Strait.

I am always amazed at some people thinking race is the be all and end all. Yes, I am white. No I am not a White Supremacist. I prefer to use the standards espoused by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. I judge people by their character, not the color of their skin.

You may be right in your evaluation of the white liberals, though. For some reason, most liberals today think that any act of war against our country requires arrest and Mirandizing before going into civil court. You referred to WWII, a time when Americans emerged as one people with one plan: WIN THE WAR.

Under the current administration, foreign combatants are accorded all the rights of American citizens. Our troops are told not to shoot back until they are sure there are no “civilians” in the fire zone. One general even recommended an award for restraint under fire,. LTC Allen West resigned his commission because he threatened an enemy combatant and saved his own troops from an ambush.
There is something wrong with this picture.

When I was serving in Kassel, Germany, I learned that the city had been virtually destroyed by allied bombers during WWII. Apparently some planes were shot down and the survivors from the crews were hanged and drug through the streets. After that, allied pilots always “saved one for Kassel.” One bomb was reserved for the return run on the city. And Dresden was virtually melted into the ground by napalm.

Now we try to avoid “collateral damage.” Which has been m

Back during a visit to Persia (as it was then known), Hitler so impressed the leadership in Persia with their Aryian heritiage stuff, that the Persians change the name from Persia, to Iran, the persian version of Aryian I believe. Nevermind the fact that, Iran has been sponsoring terrorism for decades, since the creation of the Muslim Brotherhood, as at various times, Iran became the safe harbor as different governments in the middle east at various times made the MB illegal. But Iran has had ties to funding terrorism to such an extent that they became known as the state sponsor of terroism.

More important that drilling is excavating. We have had designs on the books for thorium reactors for a couple generations. these reactors can run on the waste products of iron mining and the waste of our current nuclear reactors. And the best part is that you can power an entire family’s needs for a year off of the thorium found in the average cubic meter of dirt… ~ 2 grams. Currently, they mine ten times this much volume for an equivalent source of uranium. So why haven’t we started using thorium yet?

The Iranians have nothing that could remotely bother one of our carrier groups. If a country was debating about attacking us and floating their ships around our coasts we would also be giving warnings. The difference between us and them is we can actually do harm to their homeland. They can do nothing to us or our navy.

This is all a show to get a war started.

AS a Navy vet I remember the STARK. the USS STARK FFG31 was struck by a french made exorcet missile fired by the Iranians on 17th of March 1987. 37 American sailors died that day. I have been out of the Navy for over 20 years but I doubt that FFG’s have upgraded very much.
When Navy ships transit the Straights of Hormuz they are at General Quarters, Al the hatches are sealed and people are dressed out in firefighting gear. It sounds like the Navy takes these threats seriously, Perhaps you should have a little less bravado and remember some history before we repeat it.

Yes, I remember the USS STARK and attended one of the Memorial Services on base for the lost crew. I also remember the USS SAMUEL B ROBERTS that ran over a mine in the same waters. She came home to Newport on a Dutch heavy lift vessel.

It was actually an Iraqi that shot the STARK since the French were supplying that side of the “Tanker War” in the Gulf, an arm of the Iran-Iraq War that ground on for nearly a decade costing a million souls.

Their intentions are, according to a defector from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, is to develope a missile capable of being fired from a ship, develope a warhead that could devliver an EMP attack upon the United States, mate them together and make sure the system works, put this on a ship, send the ship to the coast of the United States, and launch and detonate the nuclear warhead in an EMP attack, and when America collapses, seize control. Watch Rumors of Wars, both I & 2. This defector was in on the planning sessions to conduct this operation. A nuke detonated over the US even in an EMP attack would not be good. But then again, Myth Busters busted the EMP myth in that all they had to do when their EMP shut down a modern computer was to turn it on again. And that was without the use of a Faraday Cage. Japan had 2 cities hit with atomic bombs, and the cities have been rebuilt and lived in since. What really will the radiation do? We have nukes, and would respond appropriately.

The other thing we also need to be off the coast of Israel, so when Hamas and Hezbollah make a move against Israel we will be there to squash them also regardless of the collateral damage. If you associate with terrorist, you will end up like terrorist – dead.

I assume that you are excluding Israel responding to attacks initiated at them FROM another nation as, since you an intelligent, unbiased person, you recognize a nation‘s RESPONSIBILITY to defend it’s citizens from external attack. So, when has Israel, unprovoked, attacked another nation?

@ Smack – Israel attacked to preserve itself which is permitted in the UN charter. Syria and Iraq – nuclear threat ended. Lebanon – constant barrage of missiles on Israeli civilian towns by Hezbollah which Lebanon refused to clear away.

Israel has not gone for regime change, only self-defense preemptive and targeted attacks. Neither has Israel promised to destroy other nations because of religious differences. Israel was attacked by Syria [Hezbollah a proxy], Lebanon [Hezbollah], Iraq [Saddam paid suicide bombers to kill Jews in Israel] repeatedly before responding. Let’s not forget the 1992 attack on the Israeli embassy in Argentina carried out by Hezbollah or Islamic Jihad.

You need to find a different line of attack to support muslim intentions to kill all the Jews.

@JLGunner He said in an interview that he would use submarines to protect the US. He would have ready ships and the kind to defend us. Our modern foreign policy more often than not uses our troops for nation building, while leaving our borders unsecured and wide open. We need to reevaluate our priorities, here at home. We have enough satellites, carriers, submarines, stationed missiles and other high tech weaponry to protect our homeland and our interests far off. We really should rethink about our strategy of sending our troops all over the world, it’s spreading our military too thin. Plus, we’re going broke. Just saying.

War over Iran 0, US lots of points. Then take out their nuclear enrichment facilities.
What we need is a President with the cajones to respond if the Iranians fire one hostile shot at a US Navy ship.
