Iran Withdraws Suez Canal Request

CAIRO (AP) — Two Iranian naval vessels withdrew a request Thursday to transit the Suez Canal after Israel expressed concerns over the plans, a senior canal official said.
The official said no reason was given for the decision to withdraw the application. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said it was not known if the vessels intended to transit the waterway at a later date.
The Suez Canal official identified the two vessels as the Alvand, a frigate, and the Kharq, a supply ship, and said they were en route to Syria. He said they were now in an area near the Saudi Red Sea port city of Jiddah.
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Wednesday that Iran was about to send two naval vessels through the Suez Canal for the first time in years, calling it a “provocation.”
Israel considers Iran an existential threat because of its disputed nuclear program, ballistic missile development, support for militants in the region and its threats to destroy Israel. While Israel has pressed for international sanctions to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, it has not taken the possibility of a military strike off the table.
Israeli Foreign Ministry officials could not immediately be reached for comment on Thursday.
Egypt’s official MENA news agency quoted Ahmed al-Manakhly, a senior Suez Canal official, as denying that the waterway’s management had received any requests by Iranian navy ships to transit the canal.
On Wednesday, U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley confirmed the presence of the two Iranian ships in the area of the canal but would not say whether that was considered provocative.
“There are two ships in the Red Sea,” he said, “What their intention is, what their destination is, I can’t say.”
Vessels intending to transit the Suez Canal, which links the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, must give the waterway’s authority at least 24-hour notice before entering the canal.
Only ships that don’t meet safety requirements are banned from using the canal.
In the case of naval vessels, a clearance from the Egyptian defense and foreign ministries is required in advance, but is rarely withheld.

Posted on February 17, 2011 at 11:21amThis is good news, for now. But I am amazed at the comments here. Israel may, indeed, kick Iran’s proverbial butt, but do you all realize the horrendous instability such action would have on our entire world? LIfe, as we know it, will certainly change – and not for the better, I think.
Having said that, sooner or later, it probably will happen. I feel for the good people that are in Iran.

I strongly suspect that Iran will undergo an internal revolution for the better before Dinnerjacket does anything dire. Could be wrong, he may launch a pre-emptive strike on Israel in order to try and keep a common-enemy theme going and thus subvert a revolution. Who knows? It would be a minor conflict at best in regards to actual wars, with military actions numbering in the single digits of days.
Let‘s hope it doesn’t happen, but the world will not end if it does, and Israel will be fine either way.

Posted on February 17, 2011 at 1:18pmI have to agree with Ghost here, even if DinnerJacket sent a pre-emptive strike on Israel, he would be taken out rather quickly. Not to mention, it probably serves Israel’s current interests to have DinnerJacket in as the Pres of Iran for the time being. His delusional rantings will serve to topple that regime in the near future. There are many things happening behind the scenes that will become public later this year. Much will change.
The only thing that would temporarily change the world, would of course, be the price of oil skyrocketing for a time.
As far as the two ships, they are now on their way around africa to offload thier “supplies” to the Syrian terrorist regimes they have been funding and supplying since….what 1973? Once their intentions became public to cut a few days off the journey via the Canal, they realized that they would be sitting ducks in the canal for “inspection of cargo”. Who knows, the Egyptian Army may have been the one saying no to their passage, being under the state of military control right now. Might just be easier to say that “we changed our minds” rather than say Egypt didn’t grant right to pass??? Just a thought…

anyways the americans are coming here because of both politcal and financial reasons, in the last decade we have gotten many former soldiers seeking political asylum, many farmers seeking better prices for their product, more affordable land more stable economy, universal healthcare(not forced insurance) any many more reasons, also we get many immigrants that come for personal reasons, to escape crime gangs violence etc. or fear of the future. Many come to raise families in a quieter safer more stable environment I am not sure on numbers as I don’t care I am a Canadian born and raised. statistics mean less to me then walking outside and talking to the general population. I think the best method to find statistics would be to search “americans seeking asylum in canada” or “farmers migrating to canada” or other terms like that
Anyways Best of luck to all the americans. I hope you guys fix your situation. It’s not the sheeps fault you got lamb chops for dinner, its the wolves fault

The failure isn’t the philosophy, but the human reflex to lie, both to others and to oneself. Combine that with ignorance and stupidity, and there’s no philosophy in the world, not even the word of God, that can cause people from doing stupid things.
Tolstoy went to his grave wishing to meet just one fully honest man, and died disappointed. All it ultimately takes is absolute honesty, and that’s a price nobody is willing to fully pay it seems. Philosophy need not even apply when one won’t even begin to honestly follow one fully.

You do understand that politicians bluster in order to appeal to the mass of their own supporters right?
What you take serious is the below-the-public-radar communiques, transmissions and other communications. That’s why nations put spies in other nations. If they could rely on the public words of politicians to discern real intent, there would be no need whatsoever for spies. The words of politicians can be used to gauge how a politician is “feeding” his base, or trying to get his detractors to submit, but they‘re not good for a lot else in regards to real life intelligence that you’d base concrete action on. This is why I’m pretty certain Israel did nothing substantive, because they don’t run around in a state of panic every time a politician speaks in public and instead rely on real intelligence gathering and analysis.
I say this as a former military intelligence operative.
Report Post »GhostOfJefferson
Posted on February 17, 2011 at 10:31amAnd those words by Israel are public as well, keep that in mind. Politicians are a known quantity in any country, and Israel’s are no different than those in any other nation in regards to playing the “keep our people in this given condition” when they speak or issue public releases. Israel wants to keep its people in a state of high readiness and alert, and it’s hard to do that if you release public statements such as “Iran currently has the military sophistication of a slice of damp bread and poses no long term sustained military threat to us”.
We do the same thing as well, in regards to a host of other nations. It’s how politicians manipulate you.
This is not to say that danger doesn’t exist, it does, and those risks are assessed behind the scenes by trained operatives. Or put another way, in the mid 1980′s we knew that Soviet military capability was a paper tiger with claws of vacuum tube using weaponry, and the only danger the posed was nuclear, yet the public message was of imminent takeover here in the States up to the very day that the Berlin wall came down. The first Iraq pseudo-war was a proving ground for that, and Iraq’s then Soviet bought weapons were spanked in ways that made the Russians shudder off the public screen.

Because they’re not exactly going to say that Iran is no threat to them to keep playing the victim while in actuality being the most powerful military force in the region that dictates the policies of most of its neighboring states? This story is another example of just that.
