Iranian State TV Praises Oscar Win as a Victory Over the ‘Zionist Regime’

TEHRAN, Iran (The Blaze/AP) — Iran‘s state TV described the country’s first foreign film Oscar win Monday as a victory over archfoe Israel, a rare nod of approval toward a movie industry often criticized by Iranian hardliners.
The official reaction to the victory of “A Separation” in Sunday‘s Academy Awards ceremony was cast mostly in nationalist terms amid a mounting showdown between Israel and its Western allies over Tehran’s nuclear program.
The Israeli film “Footnote” was in the competition against director Asghar Farhadi’s movie, which explores troubles in Iranian society through the story of a marriage breaking apart.
But Farhadi, in his acceptance speech in Los Angeles, said he hoped the Oscar would raise awareness of Iran’s artistic achievements and rich culture that has been “hidden under the heavy dust of politics.” Still, it seems politics is dominating the Iranian response to the film’s win.
Watch his acceptance speech:
Iranian cinema has reaped praise and prizes at international festivals such as Venice and Cannes for decades – as part of an artistic tradition among Iranians that includes poetry, music and artwork that now command some of the highest prices in galleries in Dubai and elsewhere.
The government, while it highlights sporting achievements and technological leaps as a source of national pride, has often been dismissive of international cultural and entertainment awards.

Clampdowns by hard-liners in recent years – particularly since the unrest after the disputed 2009 presidential elections – have included artists and others, forcing some to flee the country or work underground. In January, a well-known independent film group in Tehran was ordered closed.
Many Iranian conservatives were upset with the themes of “A Separation:” domestic turmoil, gender inequality and the desire by many Iranians to leave the country.
See the film’s trailer, below:
But Iranian state media used the Oscar-winning film to trumpet a success over Israel. The state TV broadcast said the award succeeded in “leaving behind” a film from the “Zionist regime,” the phrase often used in Iran to describe Israel.

In this Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012 photo Israelis wait for the screening of the Iranian movie "A Separation" at a movie theater in Jerusalem. Israeli newspapers warn daily of the Iranian nuclear threat, but for the past week and a half, Israelis filmgoers have packed movie theaters to watch a drama set in Tehran. Israel has not ruled out military strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities, which the West fears could be used to develop weapons. Tehran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes like energy production and cancer treatment.
Javad Shamaghdari, head of Iran’s Cinematic Agency, portrayed the Oscar decision as the “beginning of the collapse” of Israeli influence that “beats the drum of war” in the U.S.
Farhadi said he thought the success of “A Separation” pleased some in the Iranian government and not others. “The Iranian government is not unanimous at all,” he said.
It was the first Iranian film to win the award. The only other Iranian movie nominated was 1997′s “Children of Heaven,“ which was defeated by the Italian movie ”Life Is Beautiful.”

“A Separation” tells the story of a couple heading for divorce and dealing with domestic troubles, including a young child and an aging parent. It portrays a husband who is protective of his father who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. He is in conflict with his wife, who wishes to emigrate. Their daughter is torn between them.
Iranian TV did not broadcast the Academy Awards live, but many Iranians watched through satellite dishes, which are illegal but widely used. State TV later aired clips of Farhadi’s acceptance speech.
Iranian artists and the public were delighted by the win.
Tahmineh Milani, director of the acclaimed 2005 film “Unwanted Woman,“ said the Oscar was a source of ”national pride.“ She said the award ”revived hope in the hearts of all Iranians” regardless of their professions.
Nima Behdadi Mehr, a cinema columnist in pro-reform Mardomsalari daily, believed the award “would help Iranian cinema to come out of its isolation.“ He hoped President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would grant Farhadi a ”special prize” to draw further attention to Iran’s film industry.
“I feel fresh air in my lungs. I watched the ceremony through satellite TV channels with four of my friends,” said Erfan Khazaei, an art student in Azad University, as he watched the ceremonies that finished well after midnight in Iran. “Now we are more hopeful about the future.”
But ultra-conservatives denigrated the film as a slap at the country.
Ebrahim Fayyaz, a prominent hardline sociologist, told the Nasim news website that “A Separation” is one of the worst Iranian films.
He said it was a “black realistic film” that portrays the country as an old man, as a symbol of tradition and the past, afflicted with Alzheimer’s. He said the movie suggests emigrating to the West as a solution.
“The West awards movies that are in the direction of their policies,” he said.
Last month, Farhadi proposed that Iranian authorities allow a vote among artists about the fate of the House of Cinema, an independent film group that operated for 20 years before it was ordered closed by authorities in January.
Officials said it lacked the proper permits. Artists and others claimed it was a political decision because the group often took liberal stands contrary to government’s cultural policies.
Iranian cinema has for years been one of the nation’s main cultural exports, notably films of Abbas Kiarostami, Majid Majidi and Jafar Panahi. Panahi in 2011 was sentenced to a six-year house arrest and a 20-year ban on filmmaking after being convicted of “making propaganda” against Iran’s ruling system.
Kiarostami’s “Taste of Cherry,” a story about a suicidal man seeking someone willing to bury him, won the 1997 Palme d’Or at Cannes. Majidi’s Oscar-nominated “Children of Heaven” follows two impoverished siblings seeking new shoes.
In 2007, the Cannes jury prize went to the animated film “Persepolis,” an adaptation of Iranian director Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novels about growing up during the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 3:07pmI have not watched the Oscars IN YEARS, since the 60s. WHY WOULD I? WHY WOULD YOU? There are simply NO DECENT MOVIES being made out of Hollywood anymore. They all have profanity, nudity, and gore. So, if that is why you watch them, THEN WHY ARE YOU FOLLOWING GLENN BECK, unless of course, you are a TROLL. Beck followers are DECENT people. There are very few decent acts/actresses left in Hollywood. I can name 10 and that is about all.
SO AGAIN, WHY WOULD YOU WATCH ANY OF HOLLYWOOD’S MOVIES THESE DAYS?
These people memorize lines so they can PRETEND to be people they are not, just so they can convince you of some personal dilemma, tragedy, or event.
What is really worse, is that they really believe, just like most of you who are reading this, that in order for a movie to be REAL-LIFE, it must have swearing, nudity, and immoral themes. If that is what you believe, then THE DEVIL HAS FOOLED YOU AGAIN. And, I say to you, that if you continue to watch and SUPPORT these immoral movies, YOU WILL BE JUDGED BY GOD for it.
Report Post »If you believe for 1 second that the immoral crap in these movies have no affect on you or that you will not swear or have bad thoughts, think again. Continuing filling your mind and soul with trash will produce trash.

Report Post »1. WMDs includes chemical weapons, with Saddam had AND had used against both Israel and his own people, yet you defend him and condemn Assad.
2. People don’t translate Allah because Muslims often perceive God differently. Christians and Jews don’t often say “God is great” as a war chant. Most call God merciful and compassionate. Jews often use words like “awesome” (as in something to be in awe of) or “mighty” during prayer in acknowledgement of his greatness. Even Jews and Christians differ in their views of him, and that’s why many religious Jews prefer to use the term “HaShem” which literally means “the name” so as not to take the name in vain.
3. Hamas has proclaimed Jihad to be their only way to achieve their goals as has the MB. Hezbollah is a proxy of Assad through which he controls Lebanon and attempts to conquer Israel.
4. Everyone who knows anything knows there are Cristian Arabs.
5. Before WWI the Middle East was ruled by the Turks, not the Arabs, and anyone who wasn’t Muslim had fewer rights. Early Jewish immigration started at this time and operated through completely legal channels.
6. Prior to the Zionist migration the area known as Palestine was scarcely populated. Most settled previously unowned land and there was no need to displace anyone. When Transjordan was formed, however, and further immigration and settlement restrictions were placed on Jews by the Imperialist British, Jews and Arabs began to bump heads more and more.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 11:22am7. Zionism believes that without a place where Jews control their own destiny the existence of Jews cannot be guaranteed. They have 2000 years of persecution to demonstrate that point. No country stood up for the Jews worldwide before Israel existed. Today many countries do.
Report Post »8. Hamas’ charter, as I’ve already said, only recognizes the use of Jihad to attain its goals. Hamas’ logo includes an image showing all of Israel minus the Golan Heights, indicating their goal is to destroy Israel. You have never provided proof to your statement that they would accept peace. Abbas doesn’t even want Jews to be a part of his Palestinian State at all. He met with murderers and praised them as heroes because they killed Israelis. That’s not exactly peaceful.
9. 9/11 was political? I don‘t care what they say their reasons are because it still wouldn’t justify what they did. Attacking the USS Cole could have been political as could the bombing of our embassies. Both could be seen to represent our influence overseas. But the WTC? Commercial airliners? That’s not political Rose, that’s just evil. Those actions only served one cause: destroying as much as possible and spreading fear. It wasn’t political or religious blowback; it was an attack that was meant to destroy as much of America as it could.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 12:08pmI haven’t seen the Israeli film but I have seen A Separation. It’s safe to say here that the Iranian government is trying to co-opt something that doesn’t belong to them – although A Separation isn’t a political film, there is implicit criticism of (or at least exasperation with) the government, from the disfunction of its legal system to the hypocrisy of its members; the win for this film simply cannot count as a win for Iran except in the most inarticulately broad terms (i.e. except in as much as that this film won and it’s from Iran). And this isn’t anything new; Iranian filmmaking has long existed at odds with the Iranian government, which has a history of artistic censorship. It’s worth remembering that the second most significant film to come from Iran this year, This Is Not A Film, had to be smuggled out of the country in a USB drive in a cake.
(By the way the film IS good. It’s not my favorite foreign film of the year – not by a long shot – but it’s a deserving winner.)

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 8:19amACT OF VALOR was the only film we have just paid to go see in these last 4 years, in fact the last we paid to go see was that GOP conservative film AMERICAN CAROL with Kelsey Grammer and Kevin Farley.

Interesting; my last response to you was deleted. I guess someone didn’t like me pointing out that The Blaze has run several articles on it?

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 8:42amI find it disconcerting that out of all the people who have commented negatively on the movie here on The Blaze, none had seen it. I don’t know why some of you you pride yourselves on “only having seen one movie this year” (whether it’s Act of Valor or a rerun of some old John Wayne dud) or sing the praise of a true stinker like American Carol just because it espouses conservative ideals. You also seem to have missed Asghar Farhadi’s message, that despite what you think of Iran’s horrible regime, there are some food decent people in that country who are being used as puppets in a political game. Not very regime friendly! You would know that if you had seen his movie. And if you had seen the Artist, you would know that all French people don’t hate America (in fact, didn’t you hear Jean Dujardin say “I Love your country” in his acceptance speech?). Have you ever seen a non-american movie? Have you ever tried to experience the world through another culture’s eyes? You’d be amazed at what you find.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 12:17pmBroadly speaking Sonick is right here; it’s troubling to see so many people dismiss this film before having seen it. (Incidentally The Artist is largely a tribute to American filmmaking, so you‘d think it’d be a little more appreciated here.)

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 7:19amOne more demonstration of how radical Hollywood is out of control and out of touch; now the reason Michael Moore was allowed to go into Iran makes sense – he must have been telling them that the oscar vote for his radical buddies was assured and rigged ahead of time.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 7:46amThe irony is pretty thick here, Snow.
An industry crushed by their government wins an oscar – viewed by Iranians illegally watching by satellite -and the same government congratulates itself. The western world – always in the wrong – is suddenly right.
And the Iranian government, who would arrest anybody watching….
The corruption and political opportunism is so blatant and ludicrous that one might be forgiven for suspecting that the whole thing had been scripted by Sasha Baron Cohen.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 8:11am@NZKiwi – if you had experienced some of the things I have, especially the scars across my neck and face as a ‘guest’ of the M Brotherhood (one who was my own uncle) due to being a Chaplain and a Christian, then irony is appropriate.
In this case, yes it probably was put on too thick; yet the manner of Moore – a rabid progressive, hollywood 1%, and so forth having gotten in and out of Iran with no problems a few months ago for a ‘film festival’ while other Americans would be ‘detained, tried and jailed’ as spies makes me a little more than suspicious.
So if I caused any offense I apologize.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 8:32amNo, Snow, it wasn’t put on too thick.
I was agreeing with you, but commenting on the regime.
I was a bit clumsy in expressing myself.
But what happened to you? And I bet I not the only person wondering.

Posted on February 27, 2012 at 9:06am@NZKiwi – I was on a trip overseas soon after my graduating from seminary; my uncle had fled the US years before due to things he had done to me as a boy – you can imagine it easy enough. How he found out my agenda I still do not know, but the better part of a week held by him and his friends plus all they tried to do to get me to become a good little muslim again failed to turn me – they decided then it was a matter of family honor to kill me – or try to – only by God’s own grace was I saved with only the scars and the loss of my left eye.
I refuse to have the scars altered or removed with surgery; they are a reminder and a testimony to all who see them and ask of what they did to me.
When I hear of extremists such as them, and even as with Obama and his radicals, it is hard for me to keep my temper in check at times. UBL cost me my fiance on 9/11, and so much more others have cost me as well.
I hope this answers some of the questions.

I sat for a few minutes being stunned and wondering how to reply.
Having followed your posts since the Blaze started, I knew that you were a chaplain and had been seriously injured, but to hear the cause of it has shocked me.
You know that I am an atheist, but I say to you with the utmost sincerity; may your God bless you and comfort you. And may He be beside you every day and continue to reinforce your obvious strength of character.
Bless you, mate.
