Iranian Warships to Pass Through Suez Canal — Israel Calls it a ‘Provocation’

Iran just threw gasoline on an already raging fire in the Middle East. According to reports, two Iranian warships have set out for Syria and are planning on using the Suez Canal, a route that would bring it dangerously close to Israel, to get there. Israel is considering the move an act of “provocation” that it may not be able to “ignore.”
The Jerusalem Post reports:
The Israel Navy will be tracking two Iranian warships as they make a rare crossing of the Suez Canal late Wednesday night and sail into the Mediterranean Sea.
The two ships will cross into the Mediterranean Sea on their way to Syria. Defense officials said that Israel would track the ships but that their presence in the sea would not change anything for the Navy’s operational deployment.
“It is strange for the Iranian Navy to use the Suez Canal since it really doesn’t have anything to look for in the Mediterranean Sea,” one unnamed official told the Post.
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman told the Post the planned crossing of the Suez by the Iranian ships is a “provocation that proves that the overconfidence of the Iranians is growing from day to day.”
“The international community needs to understand that Israel will not be able to ignore these provocations forever,” he added.
According to IsraelNationalNews.com, the ships are planning on docking in Syria for a year, and UPI.com reports that Iranian ships in the Red Sea area may be involved in supplying radical Muslim groups from Yemen with weapons.
The military maneuver comes as last week Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad hosted a massive anti-American and anti-Israel rally.
“We will soon see a new Middle East materializing without America and the Zionist regime and there will be no room for world arrogance (the West) in it,” Ahmadinejad told cheering crowds in Tehran’s Azadi (Freedom) Square on Friday.
The move also comes amid growing anti-government unrest in Iran. This week, protesters have been heard chanting “Death to the dictator!” while Iranian leaders have called for the execution of opposition demonstrators.

No, it’s a fact. Sailing through an international straight is not a provocation.

I’ve always been unclear about why either the U.S. or the Soviets had anything to do with with Cuba. Neither had any business being there. I do understand the realities of the time however.
“You also stated that Israel has been trying to draw us into war with Iran that they have wanted for years are ludicrous! We’ve never had interest in invading Iran, outside of rescuing hostages in 1979 (or rather, trying to). Suddenly, we’re all gung ho. I don’t believe for a second that back room wheeling and dealing is going on and I cannot help but notice that every reason people give for US going to war includes the word “Israel”. I like Israel and bear them no malice, but I have no desire for my son to die over some bizarre middle east squabble. Let them take care of their own problems, they’re a strong country.

There are no exceptions. Israel needs to calm down. Unless Iran does something or attacks, Israel has no say in the matter and needs to stop huffing and puffing.
Is Iran being provocative? Maybe, probably even. But until they do something that actually violates a law or is an act of war, Israel needs to restrain its hand.

Calling it a provocation is not being calm. It is not. All ships, all flags, may and do pass through the area, and are enabled to by treaty. If Israel is calling this a provocation, then I need to know exactly how it is a provocation, as simply sailing through like all other nations do (and as Iran itself has done in the past at times) is not.
If they have some intelligence demonstrating that Iran is going to do more than sail through, then release it. As it stands, there is no reason to strike these ships, assuming that all they do is sail through.
It bothers me how easily some call for war these days. Be calm people, let’s see what plays out before screaming for what may well turn into WW3.

It is a very broad description. It could be 2 PT boats with 8 people aboard for all we know. Before I decide to panic or get all Apocalypse-y, I’ll need more than ships sailing lawfully through a canal. My criteria for panic are a bit higher than most these days. :)

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 1:49pmIt seems to me that waiting until you have finished counting and burying your dead BEFORE you bring attention to a potentialy serious military threat is a very poor way to protect your citizens. That is the philosophy of the Nazis and Soviets, and I’ll have no part of it. You cannot attack people for what they “might” do, possibly, potentially, maybe. Ackmad-dinnerjacket is an idiot and a flashy provocateur. He no more wants real war against Israel than any other middle eastern nation, he simply wishes at this point to look tough for his own crowd so he retains power.

Report Post »Confronting the threat is not the same as going to war. By bringing attention to the proximity of the Iranian warships to Israel, it may take the sword out of Achmedinajab’s hands. The world now knows about the two ships and their destination. They are on notice to behave in a peaceful manner or be held accountable…..that helps maintain the peace better than anything else. I also do not subscribe to the tactics of the Nazis and Soviets…..they lied to legitimize their own warmongering ways…..but I do believe that a soveriegn nation has the right to identify, monitor, and notify other countries of a potential threat to it’s own people. War is not the answer……unfortunately, sometimes it is all that we have left.

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 2:33pm@Ghost, I feel you may be a bit naive’…I’m not saying attack but to make the provocation that Iran is doing at the current time is certainly an item that Israel should make public. It serves multiple purposes and, in my opinion, is a reserved approach to the situation. It makes the entire situation public so people with all perspective will watch the situation. Israel has not done anything provocative, and I must say has been very reserved in light of Akmadinnerjacket‘s previous calls for Israel’s destruction. You seem to say, don’t listen to what he says, but that you know what he means. Can you read minds? I take the crazy fool at his word. You also say that Israel must wait for an act of war on Iran’s part, hasn’t that already occurred many times in the past, and currently with thier ouster of the IAEA and denial of compliance with the UN?
I’m not saying nuke them, yet, but certainly be prudent in their own defense. I’d certainly have my hand next to the button waiting on those ships to pass.
Also, your statement that any ship can pass, commercial or war during war and peacetime is not correct under today’s operation of the canal. Egypt fully owns and operates this waterway and has closed it in the past and may likely in the future dependent upon the outcome of the coup/overthow or whatever you call the current situation there. The treaty you were referring to is when it was run as a business and there were shares owned by countries and people. Egypt has paid to enhance and fortify the canal in the past 35 years, so I believe it would be their decision as to who may pass.
Certainly has been a point of contention for the British in the past, when they have blocked the canal and shut it down to traffic.

“Ghost, I feel you may be a bit naive’…I’m not saying attack”
Then we’re on the same team, ultimately. There is no naivete to be found in wishing for cooler heads to prevail than we’re seeing on this thread with the screams for war.
“ but to make the provocation that Iran is doing at the current time is certainly an item that Israel should make public. It serves multiple purposes and, in my opinion, is a reserved approach to the situation. It makes the entire situation public so people with all perspective will watch the situation. Israel has not done anything provocative, and I must say has been very reserved in light of Akmadinnerjacket‘s previous calls for Israel’s destruction.”
Which is sane and rational
“You seem to say, don’t listen to what he says, but that you know what he means. Can you read minds? I take the crazy fool at his word. You also say that Israel must wait for an act of war on Iran’s part, hasn’t that already occurred many times in the past, and currently with thier ouster of the IAEA and denial of compliance with the UN?”
Those aren’t acts of war. If the UN were demanding we comply with them in disarming Americans, would you be so hot for UN compliance in that case?
“I’m not saying nuke them, yet, but certainly be prudent in their own defense. I’d certainly have my hand next to the button waiting on those ships to pass.”
And that’s a reasonable position.
“Also, your statement that any ship can pass, commercial or war during war and peacetime is not correct under today’s operation of the canal. Egypt fully owns and operates this waterway and has closed it in the past and may likely in the future dependent upon the outcome of the coup/overthow or whatever you call the current situation there. Egypt has paid to enhance and fortify the canal in the past 35 years, so I believe it would be their decision as to who may pass.”
Ah, well I learned something new, thank you. But, ultimately, it lay with Egypt in this case as you say. I don’t have the latest news, has Egypt denied Iran passage?
“The Japanese had the right of their ships to be in the Pacific on Dec. 7, 1941, right?”
Yes they did. Up to an no closer than 12 miles from Hawaii however. Once the 12 mile marker was crossed they were on clearly demarked U.S. property and it was a true invasion by any standard, especially the standards of war during the time. The Iranians crossing the Suez does not fall into this category by any stretch.

They want Israel to look like the aggressors, they want to legitimize their fight and they want to galvanize the Islamic world as well with the same goal. We really need cool heads and reason to tackle these issues impulsiveness is not the proper solution and no good will come from “taking out 2 warships” in the Suez canal other than starting WW 3. Look at it this way in regards to the Suez Canal; a new party backed by the Egypt militia suddenly asks the Iranians for ‘protection’ force to guard the territory of the Suez, until an new Egypt force is able to take it’s place. Iran would gain defacto control of it, and at the same time place pressure on the nation of Israel to strike first…and if failing to provoke the reaction they desire, then instigate one that they will use to show the Israeli forces as an aggressor.
Look for Iran to have their navy be the part of the ‘attacked’ and Israel portrayed as the hostile party in this region. Also, if any damage ‘accidently’ happens to the canal or the structures supporting it, then Israel is blamed, and the international world crashes down upon them.

“Go back and read the spoken words of the leadership of Iran- add together the possibility of nukes or even conventional weapons and you have all the reason you need to stop them. “Wait until something happens”? You mean after Israel gets nuked?”
Nobody is going to nuke Israel. Iran is posturing because, check it out, they are having problems in their own country and they want a common enemy to rally against. Israel is that enemy. What Iran doesn’t want, is an actual war, as they know quite well that they’d lose hands down in less than a week. Don‘t make the mistake of thinking that political posturing for one’s base means that the posturing is real.
“Perhaps you would have a different view if you lived there and your enemies have sworn to eliminate you, your family, friends etc.”

False. I am in GenX and served honorably in our military, both here and abroad in central America in the mid 1980′s. I am an owner of guns that make liberals wake up in cold sweats and am well practiced in their use, and have martial arts training as well. If they have legal permission from Egypt to cross, then that act would be an act of unjustifiable aggression. Why not let them puff out their little chests and leave, instead of trying our best to cheer for war? Track them, monitor them, have spies every which way to Sunday to see what comes off the ship, but unless they actually attack anybody, let them be.

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 8:55pmHamas must be working on a new Blackade running flotilla and these are the security. Or they are supplying Syria with fissile material for a new Nuclear facility. They could also be planning to supply Syria with longer range missiles by sea.
They might also be doing what we did with Taiwan when China threatened them during the Bush admin by placing advanced technology ships in harbors to use their anti missile defense systems to fend off any potential attack, but with Iran it might be covert assistance to let Syria attack Israel from the Golan Heights and Lebenon and these destroyers would have anti-air capabilities that could cover at least Northern Israel from Israeli air support.
This could get really hairy and fast.

“There is another solution:humiliate Iran. Send 2 Israeli warships to escort the Iraqi warship to its destination for protection. This should burn their behinds.”
My thoughts exactly, although I was thinking 4. I’ll also throw my lot in with those advising *against* a preemptive strike by Israel. That would be sheer folly to say the least.

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 9:14pmI agree – WE have tried diplomacy, along with many others. Iran has been defiant and beligerant the whole time. The threatening still continues. It IS TIME to break out a large can of whoopa$$ and set them back 20 years or more. Take out command and control, take out the reactors, take out military installations and take out the guard. If not US, who? If not now, when?

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 9:19pmWhen Iran provokes Israel, and they eventually will, they will be opening a can of worms that will never again be re-canned. I grew up in Miami Beach when it was predominately a Jewish community and have a deep and abiding respect for the Jewish people. They always treated me well. My only hope is that Obama will not turn his back on Israel when the Iranians start their bloodletting! The loss of Israel as an ally would be a disgrace and the United States would never again be believed in the world of international relations. Of course, that would be okay with Jimmy Carter!

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 9:48pm@ TECH…..are you talking about the quasi-false-flag operation where Israel attacked the USS liberty with the permission of Lydon Johnson. Ultimately, to justify entry of the USA into the 6 day war by blaming Egyptian forces?? However, this never came to fruition because the war was ended very quickly…..
Both the Israeli and U.S. governments conducted inquiries and issued reports that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the identity of the USS Liberty.[5] Some survivors, in addition to some U.S. diplomats and intelligence officials involved in the incident continue to dispute these official findings, saying the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty was not a mistake,[6] and it remains “the only maritime incident in U.S. history where [U.S.] military forces were killed that was never investigated by the [U.S.] Congress.”[7]

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 11:36pmOkay TECH…11, You my friend get the prize for the most ignorant comments on one page! And that is pretty hard to do with all the trolls on this site. If you really believe that Israel has nukes pointed at America then you are severely disillusioned and completely mind controlled. Of course Israel has billions of our dollars! We gladly give it to them each and every year in the open with smiles on our faces! It’s no secret! We are their strongest ally and greatest protector, we will stop at nothing, whatever the cost to protect them. All your little facts and theories fail to do one thing, recognize that the Israelis are the Lord’s chosen people and public enemy number one to people like the muslim brotherhood and Ahmadinejad and we have signed an unbreakable pact to protect them from those that wish to wipe them (and us) off the face of the map. Why would they have their nukes pointed at their best friend when they have far greater enemies as neighbors to worry about?
You are like most liberals I know, you can quote treaties and years and facts but fail to see the Lord’s hand in world affairs and accept that some things happen by divine intervention and cannot be explained or refuted. When the nations of Russia, Iran, Sudan and Libya all treaty up and attempt to invade Israel and vaporize them the world will witness the greatest retreat of the invading forces and victory of the smallest middle eastern country that the world has ever seen! Don’t believe me, read Revelations and then get back to me…

Report Post »there have been quite a few responses to your reasonable post, but the fact remains, we have a President who is completely unconcernerned for global policy within his own thinking, he leaves that exclusively to his cabinet. Being that the United States is (was) the only ally to Israel, and Israel’s only ally seems to have abandoned Her, this will embolden Ack-ma-din-a-jad to zealotly carry out his plan to bring the 12th Imam by throwing his…“manhood” out right in the face of Israel as his ships pass by within telescopic viewing distance. Israel has no time nor patience for such games, and will blow those ships (probably devoid of any meaningful crew or cargo) out of her waters. Of course this will start a global conflict, but what choice does Israel have considering the threats made by Iran in the last 4 years concerning Israel’s wipe off the map? Of COURSE this is blatent provacation, and of COURSE Israel will do what she must. In absence of ANY supportave voice from Washington, she stands alone, and if you have ever seen a fight where a “big bully” corners and threatens a smaller, “weaker’ opponant, the “weakling” often displays a fit of rage so profound, it is surprising he doesn’t end up killing the bully. An islamic califate against tiny Israel certainly qualifies that example in my book.

Ok, Now you piss me off. if you are going to just be a sycophantic blowhard who tells an intellent poster to shut up, then as a Marine, i’m goin to ask you to ask me permission to tell them to shut up. To my face. If you can grow the sack to do so. There are many “cut-and-post’ retards on here that you can attack, but to baselessly attack someone with a smart opinion is uncalled for. i served in the Marine Corps so that Americans may have the right to speak., among other things. Yes, i refudiate those who abuse those rights by calling for the downfall of the Constitution which gives them said rights, and they deserve evry word I sling in their ungreatful face. But who you attack, they are different. Have respect for a differing opinion, if it is thought provocing and intellegent, and voice your counter-opinion as thoughtfully as they.

Posted on February 17, 2011 at 3:15amIsrael, when threatened, has demonstrated that they will strike fast and VERY hard. But they also have a history of RESTRAINT. But when a threat becomes more than, they will not hesitate to act. Iran is very aware of Israel’s strike policies. They will do everything they can to provoke but not strike. You can bet Irans second battery of missiles will be nuke tipped. Israel knows this and they have theirs ready at the helm, as well. Israel has, in the past, shown that they will have nuke armed jets in the air when threats become very real. Israel has stated that they will render their own grounds unliveable in the event of destruction. Don’t push Israel too far,,,she will rip your throat out.

Posted on February 17, 2011 at 4:00pmThis is so bogus. Iranian ships are allowed in international waters, just like US, Israeli, Chinese or Russian ships. Or anyone else’s. If the ship breaches Israeli waters or comes perillously close to an Israeli boat in int’l waters that is a different story. Otherwise, there is no justification for Israel’s position.

There is no text more heavy than the bible! You should try picking one up and reading it sometime, because you seem to be so far gone and lost beyond belief that there is no reasoning with you. My mind can not deter that far from the truth to try to reason with you. Sorry, you’re going to have to take your argument to someone who does not understand biblical prophecy as it relates to the middle east. My gov’t does not have me brainwashed to support Israel, it is my belief in God and His Words that require my unrelenting support for His people.
