Iran’s Navy Plans War Games Outside Persian Gulf Near U.S. Fleet

(The Blaze/AP)– Iran’s navy chief said Thursday his forces plan to hold a 10-day drill in international waters beyond the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, an exercise that could bring Iranian ships into proximity with U.S. Navy vessels.
The drill will be Iran’s latest show of strength in the face of mounting international criticism over its controversial nuclear program, which the West fears is aimed at producing atomic weapons – charges that Tehran denies, insisting the program is for peaceful purposes only.
The Strait of Hormuz is of strategic significance as the passageway for about a third of the world’s oil tanker traffic. Beyond it lie vast bodies of water, including the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The U.S. Navy’s Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet is also active in the area, as are warships of several other countries that patrol for pirates there.
Both the U.S. and Israel have not ruled out a military option against Iran over its nuclear program, while Iranian hard-liners have come out with occasional threats that Tehran would seal off the key waterway if the U.S. or Israel moved against the country’s nuclear facilities.
Adm. Habibollah Sayyari told Iranian state TV that the maneuvers, dubbed Velayat-90, will begin on Saturday, He said they will be held in a 1,250-mile (2,000-kilometer) stretch of sea off the southern edge of the Arabian Peninsula and into the Gulf of Aden, near the entrance to the Red Sea.
Iran regularly holds war games and has also been active in fighting piracy in the Gulf of Aden.
Sayyari denied an Iranian media report from last week that the drill would close the Strait of Hormuz. “There has been no decision yet on this,” he was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.
However, he stressed that Iran’s navy and the Revolutionary Guard have the capability to close the strait but that “any decision on this will have to come from the leader,” referring to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Sayyari said Iranian navy would use submarines, warships, missiles and torpedoes as well as unmanned planes during the drill but that it would take place “within the framework of international norms.”

Posted on December 22, 2011 at 10:22amHere is what bothers me; the US has war games all the time, and we hold them all over the world, even off the coast of our enemies. Here Iran is conducting a war game and the US media blows it out of proportion.
I’ve been there for an Iranian war game; frankly it is pretty boring. Can’t discuss the details, but our war games aren’t much more interesting either.
Let me know when Iran starts conducting war games of the coast of the US or Israel. Until then, they are just right off their own coast doing what any sovereign nation has the right to do. However, don’t take my statement as a support for Iran, because it isn’t.

Nevermind that our dollar is on the verge of collapse due to the “quantitative easing” from the Federal Reserve” (that’s printing money out of thin air)

Posted on December 22, 2011 at 11:06amI agree. And I too, have been involved in these kinds of ‘war games.’ But you have to hand it to Iran for trying to show some bluster. If it wasn’t for the fact that they most likely have Russian commitment for military aid in the event they are ever attacked by America, this would be some of the funniest news of the day. Because Iran’s entire Navy could be sunk in about 3:30 minutes.

One of the Navy’s missions is to keep international waters safe for civilian merchant shipping.

ALL crude oil is priced globally:
“December 21, 2011
Earlier this month the Department of Energy reported that the United States has become a net exporter of petroleum products (gasoline, diesel, etc.) for the first time since 1949.
It‘s important for Americans and our elected representatives to understand what that means especially if there’s a possible connection between rising exports and a “tightened” U.S. supply that leads to rising domestic gasoline prices too. ”

Who would immediately benefit (and conversely who would suffer?) if the global price of crude oil suddenly shot up to $300 a barrel?
MANY people in the U.S. would no longer be able to afford gasoline any longer and that would send an economic ripple effect throughout the US economy….
Of course, the hedge funds on Wall Street that are holding tons and tons of crude oil futures contracts would love this because it would be about a 300 percent jump in their equity holdings.

While our need for utmost confidence in our military is necessary from within and without, remember that overconfidence is an excellent weakness to be exploited.
These people will not commence a “normal” war (not that war can be categorized that way effectively). Having everybody worries is their game…and they’re masterful at it.
All i know about our involvement in other countries is that it is all politically driven. Don’t look at the soldiers, airmen, sailors, or marines as the bad guys….look at the brass and politicians who sent them under disengenuous pretenses.

Posted on December 22, 2011 at 9:12amNot too worried about their Navy-or even ours at war, with what’s going on in it. We still have the best. That may change with the spending cutbacks. Ships that “live” in salt water need lot’s of upkeep. By the way, hope they have a back up way to do things if their computers are down. Anyone in the Navy or recently out know?

Posted on December 22, 2011 at 9:42amSpeaking of “flaming”….I am hoping we send in America‘s ’Good Ship Lolipop’ (all gay crew) first and let them battle it out with the Iranians. That would be one hell of a fight right there.

Posted on December 22, 2011 at 9:53amDoseofrealty – I’m sure Drago is a Christian. All he is saying in my opinion is we she treat Iran and their threats the same as Jesus. That is, make sure Iran is crucified, dead and buried…..then they can all go to ‘hmmm”, well, almost like Jesus.

“As such, any military conflict in the area will easily spike crude prices to record highs. In fact, even fears of a military conflict will be enough to spook investors. And considering the amount of oil supply disruption such an action would cause combined with lower inventories, prices could easily double or triple by the time you blink.
Even though the Libyan oil crisis has garnered headlines, the Iranian geopolitical risk will not only be the hot topic in coming months, any resulting military conflict will make the Libyan oil crisis look like chickenfeed in comparison.”
