Iraqi Christians Forced to Flee in Face of Attacks

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi Christians gathered Saturday to mark Christmas in the same church where less than two months ago dozens from their beleaguered community were killed by Muslim extremists intent on driving them from Iraq.
The walls were pockmarked with bullet holes, plastic sheeting covered gaps where glass windows used to be and small pieces of dried flesh and blood remain stuck to the ceiling.
In front of the alter were photos of the dead parishioners, and twin black cassocks hung from the walls representing the two priests killed in the October bloodbath.
“No matter how hard the storm blows, love will save us,” Archbishop Matti Shaba Matouka told the congregation.
The storm has blown violently against Iraqi Christians this fall.
Gunmen stormed the Our Lady of Salvation church Oct. 31, taking more than 120 people hostage in a siege that ended with 68 people dead. Days later a string of bombings outside Christian homes and in Christian neighborhoods hammered home the threat.
Iraqi church officials canceled many Christmas celebrations like appearances by Santa Claus or evening Mass, out of fear for their parishioners’ safety after al-Qaida this week threatened more violence against them. The toned down celebrations were also a sign of respect for the suffering the community has undergone.
But many of the more than 300 people gathered Saturday at the church, now surrounded by concrete blast barriers and a phalanx of security officers, said they would not be cowed into abandoning their faith or their country. Outside the building hung a homemade sign that said the church would prosper during times of oppression.
“I love my country. I buried my parents here. I can’t leave it,” said Adiba Youssef, a 52-year-old woman who came to the morning service with her family.
“We believe in God, and he will protect us.”
Some of the parishioners said they had not bought a Christmas tree and felt little cause for joy. Laith Amir said he and his family stay home most of the time because they’re too afraid to go out. They did not purchase presents or a tree, but he said the church attack strengthened the will of many Christians.
“The church was baptized by the blood of the martyrs. It gave us more motivation to come to the church and to celebrate Christmas in spite of what has happened to us,” he said.
Christian leaders estimate 400,000 to 600,000 Christians still live in Iraq, according to a recent State Department report. At one time before the war, that number was as high as 1.4 million by some estimates.
U.N. officials estimate that about 1,000 Christian families have fled to the relative safety of northern Iraq following the church siege.
Many Christians have gone to the Kurdish city of Sulaimaniyah, 160 miles (260 kilometers) northeast of Baghdad. The three provinces that make up the Kurdish region are much safer than many other parts of Iraq. Sheat Jubran came with his three children after the church siege but felt little reason for joy Saturday.
“How can we celebrate while Christians are killed on a daily basis in Iraq? They killed our children and worshippers during prayer time, and they keep on practicing the ugliest crimes against Christians,” he said.

Associated Press writers Bushra Juhi in Baghdad and Yahya Barzanji in Sulaimaniyah contributed to this report.

Posted on December 25, 2010 at 4:36pmIslam is a totalitarian socio-political system that has intended to destroy everything that is not Islam for 1388 years.
Read the very bad literature called the Quran and at least the relevant parts of the Sunna and you should be able to deduce that Allah is space debris and Muhammad was (or at least became) a murderously insane rapist whose crimes were covered by ‘revelations’ whether real or imagined. Islam has caused more human suffering than Marxism; and that is an impressive accomplishment of evil.
I suppose many will now invoke Timothy McVey, who never mentioned any religiosity, or violence in the Bible which is irrelevent to the historical mayhem of Islam and does not contain a standing order to commit rape, torture, enslavement and every imaginable sort of violence against the rest of the world.
It is the most noble part of man that desires freedom of conscience and rebels against compulsion of belief. Whatever convinces any man that he has the authority to force ideas, even good ones, on another can only be from an evil source.

Everyone says that Islam is a peaceful religion, makes me laugh every time I hear that, so where are the Christian and Jewish suicide bombers? When is the last time you heard of Christians or Jews taking over a mosque and killing the people there? If I lived in a Muslim country I would leave as fast as possible and let them kill each other. If they came after me I would defend myself with extreme prejudice. Anyway MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Posted on December 25, 2010 at 11:48amUnfortunately, the only way for some people to see the truth is to see it first hand. Anyone with just an ounce of common sense could see that Islamic and Muslim religion is not tolerant of anything, even their own religion.
They kill their own because of what they call dishonoring the religion. Fathers kills daughters and call it honor killings.
But I am afraid that some people will not believe until they see it up close and personal. Too bad for them, You just don’t have to keep hitting me up side the head with a brick to make realize that it hurts.
It will be up to us to put a stop to it. The government still has the mentality of (can’t we all just get along). While sending us down a road of war, while preaching against it. Because if we don’t put a stop to it. Then it won’t be very long before we are the ones being chased and killed, either that or converting to Islam.
This is coming to AMERICA, and no amount of wishing or wanting things to be different will stop it. Unless we stand up and take our country back.
If the Muslims want Shria Law. Then they need to go back to their country.
If the Mexicans want to celebrate Cinco De Mao then they need to go back to their country.
If the Mexicans won’t learn English then they need to go back to their country.
This country was founded by immigrants, but it wasn’t founded by illegal immigrants. If you break our laws then you have no place here.
If the Muslims want honor killings then they need to go back to their country.
But everyone have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Yes, I said it. Merry Christmas. I even put in on CNN also.

I don’t have one ounce of faith that the government can or will protect us. When you have the Leader of a Free Nation praising the very people that are causing havoc and crisis around the world…my faith in him is zero!
When it comes down to it…WE the People are the only ones who can take care of our selves. We can not count on anyone…so, make the Muslims as unwelcome and miserable as possible.

The Sharia Law fanatics (Islamic Extremists) commit violence on a daily basis, and use their faith as an excuse. No courage is required of them. They hold lives so cheaply that killing (and perhaps even dying) is not a sacrifice for them; but, they do have faith, however misguided.

I’ll play along. Nope, I’m not gay nor have I ever had any thought or desire to be gay. I believe being homosexual is something you’re born as, so since I was born straight I’m not just going to start digging dudes. You, on the other hand, who believe it’s a choice seem to be terrified of the idea that you might be turned gay. Since you believe it’s a choice, you must believe you have the capacity to make that choice.
Yes, I do suppose the soldier that leaked the documents in the ideology that certain Government wrongdoings should be exposed to the light of day and open to the scrutiny of the FREE citizens that which they represent. If he had any other motivations outside of that, then I don’t suppose them. The fact he bragged about being the leak discourages me from believing the more pure of the two scenarios.
So I’m still curious as to why you defy the word of your God so much. If the law of the land should make you into a Marty, isn’t following the word of your God worth the punishment of the Earth and rewards of the Heavens?
