What was meant to be a pleasant afternoon cruise around Newport Harbor, California, turned ugly Sunday when an irate father turned violent, hitting and then throwing his crying 7-year-old son overboard during an argument. Needless to say passengers on the sightseeing cruise were in complete shock when they witnessed the incident unfold.
To make matters worse, the child was not an expert swimmer.
The 35-year-old man from Southern California, Sloan Briles was arrested the same day and is currently under investigation for child endangerment and resisting arrest Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jim Amormino said.
Amormino said Briles, his girlfriend and two sons from a previous marriage went on the cruise boat carrying 85 people but soon started arguing with the girlfriend and then with his 7-year-old son before throwing the boy overboard.
“The father hit him several times and then threatened to throw him overboard if he didn’t stop crying,” Amormino said. “The crowd on the boat became very angry at the father for hitting the kid and extremely angry when he threw him overboard.”
While the father reportedly jumped in after his son to save him, but the child was rescued by another boater. The boy and his brother were returned to their mother’s care.
The AP contributed to this story.

They should have left the dad in the water, let him swim back to shore if he can.

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 11:28amMy parents passed on great rules about corporal punishment. Never spank a child when you are angry. Only spank a child 3 times. Any more than that you are no longer punishing you are doing it in anger. Always spank with your bare hand on a bare bottom, that way you will also feel the pain you are causing. These rules were explained to me at about age 3 and repeated through years. The were reinforced by my parents when my kids came along.
Oddly enough my father and mother never spanked me. Oddly enough, I never spanked my kids. Oddly enough, my kids have neve spanked their kids. But everyone in the family knows these rules of punishment. Oh, forgot a rule, every decision has consequences and unacceptable behavior will result in a spanking.

Posted on August 29, 2011 at 11:50pmI attend public events and watch how children respond to their parents with defiance. This guy just reached his breaking point with a punk kid. Remember seven is old enough to fight with automatic weapons in parts of Africa. Read ‘Lord of the Flies just because the are under ten doesn’t mean you can’t throw them overboard if they are being brats.
On a side note the guy could be just a loon that snapped and decided thowing his kid off the boat with no cause.
Are people calling this guy a progressive because he has a beard or cause he beats the hell out of his kid? I know some conservative Republicans that administer corporal punishment to their small defenseless children (sarcasm).

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 10:29amYou, sir, are a complete loon. However, having said that, yes, I am a conservative. I believe in corporal punishment. My 3 daughters were raised on corporal punishment. They never received a beating but they did receive spankings. They never received a spanking they didn’t deserve for disobedience, back talking, breaking rules, etc. I also had the rule that they bend over and place their hands on the coffee table to take their licks. This avoided the whole hands flailing about their rear ends and me spanking the hands and arms instead of the butt. I never gave more than 4 licks, mostly 2 or 3 licks. Then the offending child was sent to her room to think about it for a while. Most times, when they were allowed to come out of their room, I got an apology. Today, my daughters are 33, 30 and 27 years old. None of them have been in trouble. None of them steal or do drugs. Two of them have moved about 300 miles away but they still call me every day to “just see what I am doing.” They come home as often as possible to see mom and dad. We get respect. We get love from them. One still lives near us and we see her almost daily. We get respect. We get love. The same I gave to my parents and I was raised with corporal punishment. Today, too many kids do not respect their parents or the law because they were raised with no consequences to their actions.

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 4:53pmYeah, don’t blame the parents. From what I witness in public, parents do NOT have control of their children. It is a disciplinary problem and you can‘t smack you’re kid on the ass; at least not in California. Remember good old Dr. Spock; Don‘t yell at your kids they’ll end up with mental problems. Yeah, whatever; nothing that a swift smack on the ass wouldn’t hurt.

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 3:19amHe probably has case against the cruise ship company for not providing enough entertainment for his seven year old so that proximity and animosity between them, which clearly led to the violent resolution, had no chance to take root. They could use a precedent for their case from a few years back where a mother was injured when she tripped over a child in a furniture store, she was awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars, and it was her child she tripped over. Think of the pain and suffering he endured while being forced to loose control in the presence of so many onlookers. The public shame and humiliation ought to be enough to ensure his never being able to secure work with anyone again. I bet the cruise company regrets not installing that video parlor now. Tsk Tsk.

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 12:13amSo, you want to blame the mother, now. Our society loves to point fingers without the slightest idea of what they are babbling about. It’s easy for you to criticize the mother for letting the father have the kids. Maybe the guy isn’t a bad person, normally. Have you walked in his shoes? I’m not excusing his horrible actions, but parents are backed into the corner by the legal system. If the mother had refused him his visitation rights, she’d be in jail, then, the dad would be in jail and the kids would be in a foster home for God knows how long with a bunch of other troubled kids. I guess that would be great for the foster parents who get paid for keeping kids that in some cases never should have been with them in the first place. It’s easy to make snap judgements on how good or bad someone is when you have not walked in their shoes nor were you present to know the whole story.

Posted on August 29, 2011 at 11:24pmNot all Muslims are bad people. I’m tired of hearing this kind of assumption on this site over and over again. Half my family is Islamic and they are not violent at all. They’re normal, law-abiding, NON-TERRORIST/VIOLENT people. We’re American and proud of it. We love this country too. We don’t want to change it (except for maybe ObamaCare and some other laws).

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 12:14amFANTAGIRL, No of course not all Muslims are bad people. But when major leaders in your faith declare war and murder non believers and you say nothing, you are complicit. Until I hear Muslims stand up and loudly declare these leaders to be evil, I will hold all muslims in a lesser light. If there was a Christian preacher anywhere calling for the death of muslims, billions of good souls would shout him down.
Will you renounce the words of your family’s prophet?
Muslims must muster all weapons to terrorize the infidels.” Qur’an 8:60
“Slay the unbelievers wherever you find them.” Qur’an 2:191
“Make war on the infidels living in your neighborhood.” Qur’an 9:123
“Any religion other than Islam is not acceptable.” Qur’an 3:85
“Maim and crucify the infidels if they criticize Islam” Qur’an 5:33
“Do not hanker for peace with the infidels; behead them when you catch them.” Qur’an 47:4
“Muslims must not take the infidels as friends.” Qur’an 3:28
Doesn’t sound like a lot of wiggle room. “good muslims” might not want us dead but their religion sure does.

I had homework. I have school, chores. I am also one of the few Muslims that pays attention to things going on. I do believe that Islamic leaders in the middle east are evil, many of the Islamic people over there are evil, and I wish it was not so. One thing I do not understand though is the the Qu‘ran quotes online differ greatly from the Qu’rans that I read. And greatly so. Mine says nothing of killing infidels. Mine says nothing of killing. Mine says not to kill, not to be violent. But whenever I look on the internet and a non-Muslim person has supposedly “translated” it, it says completely otherwise. If you’ll excuse me now I have to go to school. Then I am going to do my homework later. So I might not be able to respond then.

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 2:15pmFantagirl,
It has been 30 years since I graduated from high school. I have seen a few more examples of Islamic tolerance and persuasion than you have. I stand behind all of my examples from the Koran. I have studied and dissected it for years. Please show me any version that has been “cleansed” for my perusal. However, it really doesn’t matter what Koran “you” are following, it only takes about 19 hardcore islamicists who read a different version to ruin a beautiful summer’s day…
There was a prophet that showed the way to heaven, he was peaceful, loving and compassionate, He is Jesus Christ. Compare his life and words to Mohammed’s bloody reign of terror that continues to this day and choose wisely. God looks nothing like Mohammed.
