Irene Falls Short of ‘Doomsday’ Predictions: ‘We Got Lucky’

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (The Blaze/AP) — From North Carolina to Pennsylvania, Hurricane Irene appeared to have fallen short of the doomsday predictions. But with rivers still rising, and roads impassable because of high water and fallen trees, it could be days before the full extent of the damage is known.

More than 4.5 million homes and businesses along the East Coast lost power, and at least nine deaths were blamed on the storm. But as day broke Sunday, light damage was reported in many places, with little more than downed trees and power lines.

“I think it’s a little strong to say we dodged a bullet. However, it certainly could have turned out worse for the Hampton Roads area” in Virginia, said National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Montefusco.

At the same time, officials warned of the possibility of severe flooding over the next few days as runoff from the storm makes its way into creeks and rivers. In some parts of the Northeast, the ground was soggy even before the storm because of an extremely rainy August.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett said: “The rivers may not crest until Tuesday or Wednesday. This isn’t just a 24-hour event.”

Seawater surged into the streets of Manhattan on Sunday as Tropical Storm Irene slammed into New York, downgraded from a hurricane but still unleashing furious wind and rain. The flooding threatened Wall Street and the heart of the global financial network.

Salty water from New York Harbor submerged parts of a promenade at the base of the island. A foot of water rushed over the wall of a marina in front of the New York Mercantile Exchange, where gold and oil are traded.

“You could see newspaper stands floating down the street,” said Scott Baxter, a hotel doorman in the SoHo neighborhood.

As the center of the storm passed over Central Park at midmorning, floodwater reached the wheel wells of some stranded cars in Manhattan, and more streamed into the streets of Queens.

Still, the storm was far from the worst fears. The Sept. 11 museum, a centerpiece of the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site, said on Twitter that none of its memorial trees were lost.

Irene weakened to winds of 65 mph, below the 74 mph dividing line between a hurricane and tropical storm. The system was still massive and powerful, forming a figure six that covered the Northeast. It was moving twice as fast as the day before.

Irene’s storm surge and heavy rain of six inches to a foot in many places triggered flooding along much of the East Coast. The storm was still pummeling the Northeast on Sunday morning, dropping below hurricane strength but still dangerous with high winds and heavy downpours.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell had initially warned that Irene could be a “catastrophic” monster with record storm surges of up to 8 feet.

But in Virginia Beach, the city posted on Twitter late Saturday that initial reports were promising, with the resort area suffering minimal damage. And in Ocean City, Md., Mayor Rick Meehan reported: “Scattered power outages. No reports of major damage!”

In Lusby, Md., Constellation Energy Nuclear Group said one of two nuclear reactors at Calvert Cliffs went off-line automatically because of Irene’s winds. Constellation said the plant was safe.

North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue said Irene inflicted significant damage along her state’s coast, but that the full extent was unclear because some areas were unreachable because of high water or downed power lines.

Perdue planned an aerial tour Sunday of the hardest-hit counties after TV coverage showed downed trees, toppled utility poles and power lines and mangled awnings.

Officials in North Carolina’s Dare County said they were advised there was extensive flooding that needed to be checked out.

Elsewhere, authorities suggested Irene didn’t create the kind of havoc that had been anticipated.

“We were prepared for a lot worse, but we got lucky on this one,” said Bruce Shell, New Hanover County, N.C., manager.

He said many of the 70,000 homes that lost power Saturday were back online in the evening and a wastewater spill at Wrightsville Beach appeared to be minor.

Pinehurst dentist Harwell Palmer said his home in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., lost a few pieces of siding and there was some street flooding, but a pier that took a pounding from the waves was still standing. The storm did gobble up some of the sand.

“The main concern we will have going forward is the loss of beach,” he said.

The question still facing the region was whether Irene’s effects over the next few days would match the mess left behind by such storms as Floyd and Isabel.

In 1999, Floyd dropped at least 15 inches of rain on eastern North Carolina. The flooding was the most damaging in the state’s history, topping $3 billion in North Carolina. Four years later, Isabel brought hurricane conditions to eastern North Carolina and southeast Virginia, causing about $1 billion in damage.

Throughout the East Coast storm zone, the total extent of damage was unclear, but officials and in parts of the storm zone were relieved to find their communities with relatively minor problems. Forecasters said the storm remained capable of causing ruinous flooding with a combination of storm surge, high tides and 6 to 12 inches of rain.

“Everything is still in effect,” National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen said. “The last thing people should do is go outside. They need to get inside and stay in a safe place until this thing is over.”

Irene caused flooding from North Carolina to Delaware, both from the 7-foot waves it pushed into the coast and from heavy rain. Eastern North Carolina got 10 to 14 inches of rain. Virginia’s Hampton Roads area was drenched with at least 9 inches, 16 in some spots.

In Ocean City, Md., Charlie Koetzle stayed throughout the storm. He was up at 4 a.m., walking on the city’s boardwalk, and said by phone that he saw at least one sign that had been blown down but that the pier was still intact.

“The beach is still here, and there is lots of it,” he said.

Associated Press writers Jessica Gresko in Ocean City, Md., Randall Chase in Georgetown, Del., and Dena Potter in Richmond, Va., contributed to this report. Foreman reported from Raleigh, N.C.

Agreed, the Father of us all moved his hands around the storm and kept its fury in check. I hope people will heed the warning shown in the left-leaning medias hysterical hype of the storm as the ‘end of the world’ scenario and check the facts out for themselves; and still keep ready to deal with a real emergency so as not to be blindsided by a real killer storm coming in the future.

The media hype was stupid. The government hype was irresponsible. Remember Peter and the Wolf? What do you think will happen the next time a hurricane rolls up the coast?

The noaa bulletins available online were detailed and accurate–including local and projected windspeeds and up to the hour surge predictions. If the politicians and MSM were aware of the noaa bulletins, it surely didn’t show.

Everytime the MSM talked about windspeed, they just gave the upper limit for a category 1 hurricane-which had nothing to do with actual local windspeeds. NBC was all excited about the “eye” passing over Manhattan, when the “eye” had long since collapsed. A bunch of useless jokers. Half of them are too stupid to know any better, and the other half think we’re too stupid to know any better.

So he stayed his hand on a pagan nation? Right. The young boy that died in the hurricane was not blessed?  If a message is to be found it’s not blessings. Read Luke 13. The message you should take away everyday is get right with Him.

Its rather arrogant for you to pretend to know when He lifts His hand and does not. Even Yov(Job) didn’t get answers to such questions.

Rita, in Texas, they threw the evacuate word around half-a@#ed, w/no definitive plan & ppl got stuck on the road & died thanks to them putting unwarranted fear & paranoia in the hearts of Texans..It’s not rocket science, whatever the winds are coming up Florida, you can deduct at least 10-20mph hitting land in Carolina’s,and another 5-10mph every state leading to NY..AND PPL ARE JOKING ABOUT THE PANIC here in NYand saying they feel like donkey arse for leaving home for no reason..

It is a real blessing that this storm weakened and did not strengthen like had been predicted. Anything above a category 2 would have been absolutely devastating but the damage is still pretty significant and more to come as the resulting floods will cause plenty of damage and hardship. But it is a real blessing as this could have been a whole lot worse. Maybe they didn’t dodge a bullet but did take a whole lot less of a pounding than what these monsters are capable of. Always thank the good Lord because it could have been much much worse.

Having been through many hurricanes I have learned that these are never to be taken lightly. Each one of them comes with their own personality and sometimes what looks like a monster turns out to be just a really big soaking. I have even seen some that have come through and it hardly even rained and very little wind, then I have seen others that were barely category 1 do a huge amount of damage. I have even see tropical storms do billions of dollars in damages and that was in 1970s money. So I cannot fault emergency officials from overreacting with these storms as you just never know.

What a joke and irresponsible at that! They shut down the entire transportation in NY city 24 before the storm even made land fall and they already knew that the eye had collapsed. We listened to the coverage and were dismayed that they would portray this as doomsday event.

The fact is- Obama NEEDED this to be his Katrina moment to restore his ratings but ultimately fell short. That is why the government made this out to be worse than it really was. We have been dealing with these things for quite some time and know that a Cat 1 hurricane is NOT your Katrina.

I am willing to bet (excluding the 8 lives that were lost) that preparations for the storm cost way more than the actual damages.

      Absurdity.
This storm was never more than a Cat 1 before it even hit the coast in Carolina.
      This was OVER hyped.
And for the record: there is probably millions (if not more) in property damage up and down the east coast. That isn’t lucky. In a time of recession, unncessary added tax costs are not helpful. We didn’t luck out, we still got hit with a hurricane. We just didn’t get hit with a whopper—which it never was. They just over-built the thing up.

I almost puked when I saw the vacationer-in-chief in a posed “meeting” with NOAA officials, with his tie off and shirtsleeves rolled up, trying (unsuccessfully) his best to look like he was “in charge” and “managing” this over-hyped situation, etc….

Thank God it wasn’t anything near the level of destruction the lamestream media was obviously hoping for, and my prayers go out to all the families who have been devastated by it in any way. I just hope these peoples’ families, friends and neighbors are able to step in and help them in a way like the brave folks in Joplin were able to do.

Something I heard on the radio once describes climate change alarmists and progressives/liberals as a whole pretty well…

      Cargo Cult

To a man – it seems that every one of them thinks (has the mental disorder) that if they keep adding layer upon layer of complexity to their version of the real world, they will eventually NOT screw it up and fail like every other time before… You see this in climate change, constantly adding more and more completely crazy and unverifiable equations to try and either prove their point or obfuscate the truth. You see it in their forms of government, more departments, more regulations, more pages in the bill. You even see it in their social structure, more “diversity”, more sexes, races, creeds, cultures, and religions… which is strange from a group of people that preach tolerance and acceptance and unity.

What it all comes down to is that they are terrified, frightened, obtuse children. They imitate real people and go through the motions they think are correct, but in the end every single concept they cling to is all based on an absolute lie. That is why when you confront them with fact and they are faced with the knowledge that they are in truth dead wrong (as told by that nagging little voice in their head that we are ALL born with, knowing the difference between right and wrong) they ALWAYS resort to namecalling, racebaiting, diversionary tactics.

It would be a good show – if only they weren’t in control of the sinking ship

When you are in the tank for Obama and his commie, prog goons, you do what you are told to do. And that was to hype the storm to make Obama look like he is ready for action-unlike Geo Bush and Hurricane Katrina. It was all BS.

Fox was right along with the others and their ridiculous media over-hyped coverage. OHH, here’s a picture of a tree down!, WOOOW another picture of a foot of water over a bridge! YIIIKES! look at that wind at rain during a live report from the beach. Never mind the people in shorts and t-shirts strolling along behind them. STAY FOCUSED on the reporter in the raincoat!!! Absolutely ridiculous.

Only news worthy thing I saw today was the water coming over that Dam in NY. THAT is worth a break in the normal coverage.

I for one applaud the media hype, it saves lives. These storms used to take dozens of lives; now so far less than ten. The local governments probably did the right things based on location. The FED gets ready? ..hmn….

You applaud the networks lying to us? If a storm is a hurricane, then they should report that. When a storm weakens to the point it becomes a Tropical Storm, report it as such.

NOT ONE TIME during the coverage yesterday did I hear Foxnews report that Irene had been downgraded to Tropical Storm, NOT ONCE. Is that relevant? YES, BECAUSE IT’S THE TRUTH!!!

Once again, Shep was the worst….

Is anyone else but me concerned that these people had lots of warning, and didn’t take down their flag? Did they think a pole with an American flag would still be standing after the hurricane?

This was the most overblown, hyped up tropical storm/Cat 1 hurricane I have ever seen. Did the WH send out a memo to hype this up ? I’ve seen more flooding locally from a thunder storm than from this. Janet Napalitano is still hyping it as I write this.

People have died in this event, homes have been destroyed and the actual damage is still unknown. My thoughts are with the families who have suffered losses. We still don’t know what diseases were spread by sewage-tainted water and what future damages will be discovered.

It concerns me that this storm was so sensationalized. I’m in Southern PA, and it‘s just windy enough that I won’t be taking the truck out on the road unless I absolutely have to (lots of water, and some sticks and branches are down). I’ve experienced much worse storms in this area with less than half the hype.

Count up how many hours you personally wasted listening to news stories about this. Add to that all of the other useless stories about politics and other issues that get repeated over and over. Then make up your mind and just disconnect your cable altogether. Whatever it is you are watching you can live without. You can catch a few programs online if you want to but you won’t be monopolized by the idiots on TV, and that includes FOX. Added up over a year or lifetime it is unbelievable how much time is wasted by people watching the media on TV. Make up your mind to not having to regret having wasted all that time when you reach the end of your days.

We got rid of our television service 7 or 8 years ago. There simply wasn’t anything on there worth watching anymore.

Hey Mr. Seidl, who exactly predicted that Irene would be “Domsday?” And what exactly does that mean? A holiday celebrating Dom Deluise?

And how is anyone supposed to take this “journalism” seriously when there are such blatant errors in the headlines?
