Ironic How Politics Have Changed: Ron Paul Calls out Harry Reid for Fed Flip-Flop

The GOP-controlled House voted last week 327-98 to pass “Audit the Fed,” a bill sponsored by longtime Fed nemesis, Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX). The legislation gives Congress greater scrutiny over the Federal Reserve.

However, although the bill’s passage is a great victory for the Texas congressman, everyone (himself included) is fairly certain it will die once it makes its way to Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV).

What’s funny is that, as mentioned before on TheBlaze, Sen. Reid was all for auditing the Fed before he was against it — and Rep. Paul called him out for it during an interview with CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo.

“Let me talk about your bill, ‘Audit the Fed,’ it faces resistance in the Senate where Democrat leaders vowed not to put it to a vote. What are the chances of it becoming law?” Bartiromo asked.

“Not all that great,” Rep. Paul responded, “But I think what’s interesting if anybody really cares about how things are working here, they ought to go back and look at a speech that Senator Reid gave in 1995 where he was bragging about how strongly he supported the position of auditing and reigning in the Federal Reserve.”

“It’s ironic how politics have changed. The American people want the vote, and that’s how we got the floor on the vote last week. 75 percent to 85 percent of the people want transparency,” he added.

Watch the discussion [via CNBC]:

Monetary policy decisions are “very political,” Rep. Paul continued.

“We have an obligation and a right to know what the Fed is doing in secret when they bail out their friends and bail out the banks, and get involved in overseas financing, as they are prepared to do in Europe right now,” he added.

Bartiromo then questioned Rep. Paul about his longstanding crusade: ending the Fed.

“If you end the Fed, what’s the replacement?” Bartiromo asked.

“You don’t have to replace it with anything, but if you read the book [‘End the Fed’] carefully, I don’t claim they should be ended in one day or two. The Fed will end itself when they destroy the money and we’ll have to have a new system and that time will come,” Rep. Paul responded.

“So I just want people to have options and be able to use something else other than just using this monopoly money run by a government monopoly where they have total control,” he said, adding that politicians and bankers are “addicted to the drug of easy money and easy credit.”

I hope Ron Paul runs third party to give the electorate an actual choice.
Romney=Obama, rhetoric may be different but in policy they are identical.
To those of you who disagree with Paul’s foreign policy, how will we protect your precious holy land if we are bankrupt?
To those of you who believe Romney will reverse the economy, how is that possible if Romney supports TARP, the Fed and QE?
Criticism of Paul supporters for “worshiping” one man is common. Name me one other politician who has consistently expressed his views despite being unpopular for thirty years! Name one politician who warned us of the effects of the Fed and the housing bubble years before? Name me one politician who warned us of blow back and the dangers of intervention before 9/11?
You cannot because Paul is truly one of a kind, he has warned us of our mistakes and the inevitable consequences. Most importantly he is the only one that states the Constitution is the remedy.
He was Tea Party before Tea Party was popular.

When Ron Paul is no longer in the House of Representatives this idea will fade away into the round circle bin. Both parties, Romney and Obama can not wait to get him out because they want to continue giving bailouts and behind the scenes sweetheart deals to wall street and the corporate whores. Notice how nothing is happening on the LIBOR scandal? Intentional and coordinated manipulation of interest rates across the globe, sanctions by the federal reserve all to benefit the big wall street firms and banks… AND NOTHING from the banking regulators or our so called leaders. Fraud at it’s absolute worst, yet one can hear the crickets chirping on the floors of Congress. Oh…. that is right, they have left for their August break.

Laws and ethics is so yesterday. We are now a country run by men and banks. Something our founding fathers warned about.

And it is really that simple.

TEA knows we would not have a viable candidate this time. All we can do it take more of the House and establish a beachhead in the Senate. Two more years and TEA will have a majority in the house and will be a force unto themselves leaving the RHINOs and progressives behind.

The Federal Reserve… Is a privately owned company that Woodrow Wilson and his Democratically controlled Congress, which had a super majority, gave exclusive rights to print our currencie, set our interest rates and control our economy. They also made sure that NO US citizen or elected official, including the President, had the authority to audit their books. No one knows who owns the Federal Reserve and Wilson and his boys made sure that even asking who owns it is out of line and not a question that they have to answer… All of this is in their operating agreement and authorized by Congress and was signed into law by President Wilson. They also made sure to not allow Congress or the President tell them who to hire to be Chairman of the Federal Reserve.

Ronald Reagan wanted to put his own guy in as the Chairman of the FR but… Mr President, you are out of line here. You Sir do not have that authority. They explained to him that there contract says that the board members of the FR will offer you 5 qualified people that they have preapproved and we will only allow you to pick one of those 5 people.

Giving up the right for Congress to print money, set interest rates and to have that much control of our economy was and is to this day… UnConstitutional!

Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich stand virtually alone in the House of Representatives in opposition to the latest round of sanctions the U.S. will impose on Iran in response to its unsubstantiated nuclear weapons program. “When you put on sanctions on a country, it’s an act of war and that’s what this is all about,” said Paul. “I think this bill would be better named Obsession with Iran Act 2012,” he added.
Following political pressure by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, sanctions were approved and now head to the White House for Obama’s signature. The sanctions target the Iranian oil industry and Chinese and Iraqi banks. Obama said in a statement that existing sanctions will be expanded “by making sanctionable the purchase or acquisition of Iranian petrochemical products.”

@Cykonas: The correct interpretation is that once somthing is done, it cannot be undone. It cannot be pretended away.

“I am certain that he would not let a vacuum develop in any strategic area.”

I am pleased that you are certain. But Ron Paul doesn’t seem to agree with you. Using the spirit of his statement that he would not end the Fed overnight does not reassure me, and is a far cry from a statement from Ron Paul himself saying exactly that. He seems to be saying precisely the opposite to me.

Now having said that. Ron Paul’s faults (in my opinion) are not deal breakers. He was the only cantidate that saw clearly how bad things are. He was the only cantidate the contemplated solutions dramatic enough and severe enough to actually halt this slide into entropy. Just like Glenn says Obama is taking us off the cliff at 100mph, Romney will take us off the cliff at 55mph.
I like Ron Paul, and I have listened to many of his speeches on You Tube. I am not however a disciple. But….I will tell you this, If the choice was between Romney and Ron Paul I would be voting for Ron Paul.

Ranger, I’ll start with a concession. Certain was too strong a word. I am confident that RP would not knowingly put the U.S. in an unsecure position. You are correct, though, I can’t be certain. I also understand the doubts of you and others. RPs’ form of libertarianism is foreign to most in our country. It‘s a shame it’s that way, but it is.

I understand your trepidation as a business owner. I won’t try to find fault with those fears. President Obama is, without a doubt, the worst President of the modern era with regard to business and employment. It’s beyond me to advise anyone to disregard their fears. All I can tell you is that I’ve never been able to vote for a candidate that I philosophically disagree with. Mitt Romney falls squarely in that description for me. He a progressive. I can’t, and won’t, support him. But I would tell you that regardless of the outcome of the election, you, your family, and probably your business will survive. It may be tough, but no one can kill the USA in 4 years.

I believe in dealing with situations from a position of strength whenever possible. Strength, in my opinion, cannot be found in either the R or D party. Either party would spit on any and all of us to enhance their own power. They have sufficiently proven that to me over the last 39 years that I’ve been voting. Peace.

I understand it goes both ways, Paul supporters and Ne Cons can be equally dis respectful. In my experience though it is the Romney supporters that fall back on ad hominem arguments instead of addressing the points made by Paulinistas. I think most Romney supporters get defensive when faced with the fact that their candidate is a progressive and take it out on the messengers.
Not to mention the dozens of physical/verbal assaults Paul supporters have been subjected to by Romney supporters during the primaries.

Well seeing as the actions of neoconservatism are essentially big-government totalitarianism from the right, I don’t exactly know why any self-professed “conservative” would be particularly excited about being labeled as such in the first place.

Think about it. What did George Bush (and his political buddies) do to reinforce the ideas of a smaller, less invasive federal government? The only thing I can think of is the tax cuts. Other than that, he:

      1) Expanded federal spending on the blueprint for socialized medicine that is Medicare
      2) Expanded spending on a bloated and unnecessarily centralized Department of Education
      3) Started multiple wars under the guise of “spreading democracy” in an area of the world that has no desire for democratic reform, all at the cost of billions of dollars and thousands of lives
      4) Brought about the first bank bailout and the early stages of the TARP program
      5) Created the most blatant breach of the 4th Amendment in history – you may better know it as the “Patriot” Act

Shall I continue? Basically, what it boils down to is that people who claim to be real conservatives should be horrified if they get slapped with the “neoconservative” label, as it is representative of a political school that has absolutely nothing to do with the limited-government principles they supposedly espouse.

Maybe it will change when you and Billy Krystal quit calling for wars of aggression. Neoconservatives are the slime of the earth. They are just as bad as libs, but they want more damn wars. What kind of idiot wants more war? A neoconservative is no American patriot as he bost he is, he is a wolf who wants death and destruction anywhere in the world were someone else has the the nerve to disagree with their people getting blown up. Every damn war after ww2 was only to furthur the military industerial complex. Maybe you neocons should have listened to Eisenhowers farewell address more closely.

If you have principles, you will vote your conscience, you will not hold your nose, that way when all is said and done, and Obama is re-elected, you can hold your head high and say, I tried my best to do the right thing by voting for a Constitutionalist, but there were too many that wanted socialism instead. Well the bill is right piece of legislation to have, but you won’t see it being enacted into law while Reid is running the Senate. The Fed is about as useful as box of dog sh#t. The thing should be dissolved and the power to control and regulate currency should be left in the hands of congress, not some cloak and dagger Mickey Mouse operation. Not sure why Las Vegas elects that tool every time he’s up for re-election. You think the city with the highest unemployment rate in the state would go “Hey his policies aren’t working”, nope they just get the welfare checks and go quietly back to the housing projects.

They won’t have to vote it down. At least not before the election. Reid will never let the bill get anywhere near the floor of the Senate for a vote. So none of the Senators will have to go on the record for or against the bill prior to the election.

And, I‘m willing to wager there were a ton of D’s and quite a few progressive R’s in the House that knew that Reid would sit on the bill. So they voted for the bill though normally they probably would not have. Now they can go home for their campaign season and proudly claim that they voted “yes” to audit the Fed. Big heroes!

It’s a game, QP, it’s a game. And we are the pawns. Don’t be fooled. The only way out is a boycott of both establishment parties. Peace.

Really its the Paul supporters that want Obama re elected? That statement shows you have absolutely no understanding of the Liberty movement. If any thing the support of a Progressive RINO like Romney is what will secure Obamas re election. The reason Romney cant drum up more than a few hundred people at a rally is because he is not a Tea candidate and does not excite the base. It is you progressive RINOs that have handed the election to Obama not us.

Remember Ron Paul is the grandfather of the Tea Party, Beck and all the other establishment GOP got involved after it was already in full swing. The Tea Party/Liberty movement was originally against bail outs, the Fed, over regulation and high taxes which have been Pauls talking points for thirty years!

QP you are not Tea Party and it is like minded people who have secured Obamas reelection by bending over and letting the GOP shove Romney where the sun dont shine and then thanking them for it. Do not call us Obama supporters if your candidates policies are mirror images of Obamas policies. If you support Romney you are the progressive and an advocate of Big Govt quite the opposite with Paul supporters who believe in Small Govt and Free Markets.

@RANGER1965- You can’t put the genie back in the bottle.

Ranger, I’ve never understood this aphorism being used in cases like this. Does it mean that once a person or a country or an organization has chosen a particular course of action that it can never be changed? That’s how I interpret it. And that’s absolutely false. People, organizations and countries change their directions all the time.

It may be applicable in some other areas. One example might be the decision to launch nuclear weapons. But in terms of a country changing foreign policy, renegotiating treaties, extending or contracting diplomatic relations I don’t think it applies at all.

As to Ron Pauls’ position on non-intervention I am certain that he would not let a vacuum develop in any strategic area. As he said in the interview for this article, “the Fed can’t be shut down in a day or two”, he would approach troop withdrawals, base closings, treaty renegotiation, etc in the same manner. He is a wise and practical man.

In some cases where a vacuum does develop please remember that these other countries are sovereign and they have both the right and responsibility to defend themselves. If they need specific help they can ask for it at any time.

I’ve read many of your posts and you seem a rational man. You may never support Ron Paul, but please consider how you choose to characterize him. Neither he, nor the vast majority of his supporters, are kooks. Peace.

I doubt many on the Blaze would condemn him for wanting to end the Fed. I think most people’s objection to Dr. Paul was primarily an isolationist type of foreign policy.

Stil, in my opinion most of the angry energy generated on this site against him had more to do with rabid supporters of Ron Paul, than Ron Paul himself.

If Romney were smart, he would put Ron Paul in his cabinet and let him go after the Fed like an attack dog.

@ranger, “I have always given it as my decided opinion that no nation had a right to inter-meddle in the internal concerns of another; and that, if this country could, consistent with its engagements, maintain a strict neutrality and thereby preserve peace”. George Washington – Letter to James Monroe, August 25, 1796

“Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all. …The nation which indulges toward another an habitual hatred or an habitual fondness is in some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to its affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its duty and its interest”. George Washington – Farewell Address, September 17, 1797

“Indulging no passions which trespass on the rights or the repose of other nations, it has been the true glory of the United States to cultivate peace by observing justice, and to entitle themselves to the respect of the nations at war by fulfilling their neutral obligations with the most scrupulous impartiality”. James Madison (1751-1836) First Inaugural Address – March 4, 1809

My ardent desire is to keep the United States free from political connections with every other country, to see them independent of all and under the influence of none. George Washington (Letter to Patrick Henry, October 9, 1795)

The founders even wrote letters to Switzerland calling them our sister nation, You can even see them talking about Switzerland in the federalist papers

      @Ranger1965

I can respect you disagreeing with Paul’s foreign policy however at least get it right instead of continueing the Saul Alinsky type spin … he does not have a policy of isolationism, it is a policy of non-interventionism which was first described by George Washington in his farewell address where he said – “The great rule of conduct for us, in regard to foreign nations, is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible.

Thomas Jefferson also stated the same belief in his inaugural address with “peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none.”

So if you believe Ron Paul is an isolationalist then I guess you also believe Washington and Jefferson were as well … if that is the cae then I think you will have a home with either the Republican pro-war progressives or the Democrate Pro-war progressives… they are two sides of the same coin.

In any case stop lying about RP’s position, if you want to delude yourself that is fine.

Oooops. Way off, RANGER1965. Sorry to be gruff, but TRUTH is EXACTLY what is needed in our rather… uncertain times. “Many on the Blaze” COULD CARE LESS about the Fed. FOX and Clearchannel DIDN’T SAID BOO ABOUT IT, until the LONE VOICE of Ron Paul explained what it was. Now, they‘ll run a token lil’ story here and a token lil’ story there JUST TO KEEP CREDIBILITY.

“Most people’s objection to Dr. Paul“ IS NOT ”primarily an isolationist type of foreign policy,” because HE DOES NOT HAVE AN ISOLATIONIST TYPE OF FOREIGN POLICY, regardless of how many times FAKE-conservatives repeat the LIE. Ron Paul’s NONINTERVENTIONIST foreign policy is in perfect harmony with the founders thinking and their CONSTITUTION. However, the Bush/Obama/Romney UNCONSTITUTIONAL ISOLATIONIST foreign policy of welfare, warfare, propping up and tearing down, violates both AND INCREASE DANGERS TO OUR NATION. (and don’t think I missed your STRATEGIC application of the word “was” – as if his run is over… IT IS NOT)

Correct, “most of the angry energy” IS aimed at the MYTHICAL batdooky-crazy supporter (with nary a SHRED of evidence or example). It’s standard propaganda. Paul is next to bullet proof, making your FAKE-reservations (isolationist) look extremely dishonest… so you do the Alinsky-shuffle and claim the “batdooky-crazy supporters” ruined his chances – thus ELIMINATING ANY NEED to debate POLICY.

@ All Ron Paul Supporters on this thread.

You can’t put the genie back in the bottle. Our country departed from our founder’s wishes long ago and became an international concern. Right our wrong we are tied economically, strategically, and politically with nations all over the earth. We are bound by treaties which WE! made, shared goals, and shared economic interests…AND in some cases the interests are of such a magnitude that it would break our nation in half to end them.

In conclusion call it what you will (isolationists, partial isolationist, the Swiss system, the founder’s way, It still means a withdrawl from interests across the globe. When the US withdraws it leaves a vaccuum, which WILL be filled, by someone else.

Is this a bad or good thing? I don’t know, I can see both sides of the argument and both sides have good points. But my original statement was that the most objectionable part of Dr. Paul’s proposed policy, was this very conundrum. And it still is.
