Ironically-Named ‘Smart Meters’ Prove to Be a Dumb Idea

Headaches, insomnia, tinnitus, DNA breakdown. . .  These are just a few of the myriad problems mentioned when people talk about the constant bombardment of EMFs or electromagnetic frequencies, a huge by-product of the new Smart Meters being installed by public utilities around the country.

Ironically Named Smart Meters Prove to Be a Dumb Idea

But wait! We have been told that the Smart Grid, with it’s Smart Meters would be a good thing for all of us. Now we find out that this scheme poses very real dangers to human health?

Information on the effect of installing millions of Smart Meters, all equipped with wireless transmitters that are constantly filling the environment with EMFs, is just starting to trickle in. An electrical engineer named Rob States has been looking into this problem:

“Since individuals with no history of RF disease are experiencing symptoms the first day the meter is installed, we can assume the meter’s RF emissions are not the only problem.  The RF network is activated months after initial meter installation.  Extensive measurements have demonstrated that all of the meters measured so far, including ABB, GE, and Landis Gyr, emit noise on the customer’s electric wiring in the form of high frequency voltage spikes, typically with an amplitude of 2 volts, but a frequency any ware from 4,000 Hertz, up to 60,000 Hz.  The actual frequency of the phenomena is influenced by the devices that are plugged into the customer’s power.  Some houses are much worse than others, and this observation has been confirmed by PG&E installers that have talked to us.”

Rob’s comments come from an online article posted by Stop Smart Meters.

Thanks to the work of people like Stop Smart Meters, communities are waking up to the problem. Especially in California.

Generally speaking, people in California seem to accept new government programs with open arms, especially anything with the words ‘green’ or ‘smart’ attached to it. So Smart Meters seemed to be a no-brainer as they promised to make the planet greener and who doesn’t want a smart electrical meter?

You should know that the so-called Smart Meters are the typical energy monitoring devices with a little extra bonus added.  It is a wireless transmitter (think cell phone) that is constantly sending the power company updates on your electrical use.  The meters are now bombarding the environment with EMFs, all day, every day.  That electronic carpet-bombing of your home, apartment complex, subdivision is being blamed for health problems in people who are ‘electrically hypersensitive.’  (a real term)

The argument that Smart Meters will lower energy consumption has also been debunked.  Reuters published a piece showing no real long-term savings in homes with Smart Meters vs the old meters.

“Participants who kept the monitor (…) did not manage to sustain their electricity savings any better than those without a monitor.”

“A second finding is that certain groups of people seem more receptive to energy-saving interventions than others. A ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach for home energy monitors cannot be justified.”

No real savings, potential health problems. . . so why the rush to install these so called Smart Meters in 200 million homes?

Some skeptics claim the new meters will allow government access to more information and control over individuals. From our new friends at StopSmartMeters.org:

Do you value civil liberties and the right to privacy? When a ‘smart’ meter is installed, your utility has access to a treasure trove of information about you- when you wake up in the morning, when you go on vacation, what kinds of appliances you are using, etc.   They will be able to sell this information to a series of corporations and the government.

YES, the words ‘Big Brother’ definitely come to mind here.

Oddly enough, California may be leading the charge against Smart Meters. There are almost 30 local governments formally opposing the installation of the Smart Meters. Two weeks ago the tide started turning:

The anti-Smart Meter people actually scored a victory of sorts against this governmental invasion as news broke yesterday that PG&E offered an ‘opt-out’ program, but it is going to cost you. Early estimates say that choosing the old meter will cost an additional $14-$20 per month, plus a ‘set-up’ fee.

Let’s review what we know about Smart Meters:

European studies have shown no significant energy savings.

Great potential exists for serious and wide-spread health problems caused by constant bombardment of EMFs.

Loss of personal freedom to consume energy as you see fit is inherent in this kind of metering.

Government now has access to even more information about how you live, with the potential to interfere in your life via control of power.

And, if you choose NOT to have a Smart Meter, you will pay a ‘tax’ for the right to retain your privacy and freedom of choice.

Any questions?

It is called the Frey effect. It is an early warning system that alerts you to the fact that you are experiencing electromagnetic induction and thermal heat effect, nerve and muscle depolarization and gradual electrical decline of your own body. BTW? The frequencies are illegal under all EMF safety codes effective September 24th 2010. Corporations are ignoring this.

So the power companies have to cut usage. Big brother Obama has every intention of raising the cost of energy in this country through taxation.

It’s the EMF field that is being produced by that transmission that people are sensitive too. Typically EMF fields have a relatively small range but even an abundance of badly or unshielded wire can create large EMF fields. Some people are more receptive to it then others. Either way the fact is that certain electronics can and do do things such as they are reporting. I tend to believe them on this one, just from working in the trades in Heating AC, plumbing, and electrical as I do right now.

Everyone is receptive to EMF induction. We are uninsulated dynamic ultra subtle electrical systems and the meters turn our bodies into involuntary conductors and our houses into RF/microwave antennas. Bees leave and later perish. Usually they depart in as little as 24 hours. Kiss food security good bye. Also bats, butterflies, birds lose the ability to migrate, echo-locate, navigate. So these frequencies are so strong that they blanket everything and wipe out the eco system on which we all depend. Extinction to which we too are susceptible. Don’t even ask about pacemakers, oxygen equipment, and other medical implants or the effect on infants and children. The other real cost? The massive disease burden. Only some people are aware of the harm it is causing but it adversely affects us all, indeed all biological creatures. Even the oblivious humans are still being electrically induced. That’s right. Good old fashioned electrical induction is caused by the smart meter frequencies and it is against the law to induce us. Ready to say NO yet and mean it? Then follow up with action beginning with… protect your analog meter or totally foil wrap the s/meter before it induces cognitive impairment and you forget who you are.

These things resonate with the electrical wiring and emit sound between 4 kHz and 60 kHz? Whoa. The human ear can pick up sounds in the 20 Hz to 20 kHz range (approx), these things wouldn‘t just be annoying but they’d probably piss off dogs something fierce.

You’re right about that. If people are worried about that kind of EMF (which is actually the acronym for Electro-Motive-Force i.e. voltage), then they need to shut off the TV, stop using their remote controls, don’t drive the car, don‘t use the MICROWAVE and for god sakes don’t turn on a fluorescent light you green people. Or anyone else, for that matter.
I don’t like the fact that the info can be sold and if stop smart meters.org wants to kill them….then TAKE THEIR FUNDS! Sue them for the lack of disclosure. But radiation poisoning from a transmitter? Shut off your cell phone and for God’s sake, don’t go to a concert. The human hearing range is on average 30 hz to 16,000 hz.(traditionally known as 20 to 20k) So don’t talk to anybody with consonants. Then say rubber baby buggy bumpers.
    Good Luck.

” EMF (which is actually the acronym for Electro-Motive-Force i.e. voltage) ”
EMF, electromagnetic field is created when and electric circuit flows through a conductor.
I don’t know what the relationship is between the two “EMF’s” Do you?

      I don’t have cable TV. Don’t own a microwave. I don’t use fluorescent bulbs.
I like being able to choose to say “NO” to some of this junk.

I‘m voluntarily exposed to some EMF’s for part of the day. Right now I’m on the computer.

That is no excuse for the government / utilities / or corporations to be able to
force this stuff one me against my will when I don’t want it and believe it to be harmful.
The effects of EMF’s are probably dose dependent….just because what you are exposed to now isn’t doing immediate damage…does not mean adding
24 hour “EMF and RF emitting Smart meters is harmless
or that Americans should be forced to allow it.
      Where did our freedom go?

I’m new to forums and messed up when I tried to reply to you before…I think I put my reply on “report post”. Yes, what a genius I am. ha ha

The smart meter is also a way for them to steal more of your $$$. There are lawsuits in every market that sprang these upon us. In the majority of these cases, electric bills instantly doubled.

The utility companies get complaints and feign ignorance, suggesting some electrical problem. The customer then schedules an electrician, misses time from work, gets billed a service call, only to learn that there is not an electrical problem. Then the customer is told that the analog meter they previously had was probably inaccurate, and the shell-game continues.

One non-advertised feature of the new smart meters is the Ultility’s (and someday government’s) ability to remotely turnoff the power to each house equipped with a smart meter . If power rationing is desired due to citizens using too much electrical energy – just turn em off . It looks to be just another control device to eliminate freedom for the masses . Perhaps if you owe the IRS money they will turn your power off until you pay up . Now it will be possible .

If you really want to get off the grid then you need to explore all other options to get there. Personal wind Turbines etc… If you have natural gas Honda makes generators or Hydrogen converters for their Fuel Cell cars and they might even be available from certain Green Energy stores.

What really grates on me is that companies seel your information to others without your permission. Before you get on another’s mailing list the company should ask you in advance, not after the fact. In other words, no automatic opt-ins. You should actually get a phone call from them asking for permission.

A smart meter contains two antennas.
One transmits at 915 MHz and the other at 2405 MHz.
They can transmit at the same time, and so their effective radiated power is summed in the calculations of RF power density.
Their combined limit is 655 uW/cm2.,
The same frequency range as wireless cameras, routers, Cellphones and MICROWAVES +/- a few points spread over it’s spectrum.

The peak power limit applies to all smart meter frequencies for both the smart meter (two-antenna configuration) and the collector meter (three-antenna configuration).

All these antennas are within the 300 MHz to 6 GHz frequency range where the 4000 uW/cm2 peak power limit applies (Table 3, ANSI/IEEE C95.1-1999, page 15 For exposures in uncontrolled environments).

RF levels associated with inhibition of DNA repair in human stem cells at 92.5 uW/cm2

Consumers may also have already increased their exposures to radiofrequency radiation in the home through the voluntary use of wireless devices (cell and cordless phones), PDAs like BlackBerry and iPhones, wireless routers for wireless internet access, wireless home security systems, wireless baby surveillance (baby monitors), and other emerging wireless applications.

Neither the FCC, the CPUC, the utility nor the consumer know what portion of the allowable public safety limit is already being used up or pre-empted by RF from other sources already present in the particular location a smart meter may be installed and operated.

      Read the report here:
      http://sagereports.com/smart-meter-rf/?page_id=198

So, yes, there ARE potential health risks,
probably some sort of shielding in walls can avert SOME of it.
EYES (as in blindness) and Testes are at risk when in close proximity.
      Cancers, pacemakers etc not good…..
apartment buildings have MANY meters in one spot thereby increasing the power ourput of the signal, and there is a “collector” meter that also has antennas and sends signals.

The “network” of meters in a neighborhood,
relay the info from meter to meter to the utility,
so there are times when they all could be “talking” adding to the amount of signal/power in the area, God only knows if the data has corruption possibilities, creating a nightmare of a bill….

Now, WHY are they so gung-ho on these meters ?

      1) it probably eliminates major expenses related to meter reading, the workers, the vehicles, the gasoline.diesel bill

      2) In almost every region, they have for YEARS had a T.O.U. meter program.
Time of use meters track when and how much power you consume, typically there are
varying rates depending on the time of day, Generally 4 or more rates/periods per day.

Supposedlly to encourage the consumer to help during peak useage hours they turn into a nightmare of high utility bills, and typically lower income homes had them installed stressing already strained budgets.

      3) in EVERY region the T.O.U. meter programs were an utter failure for the utility. People hate the high bills and would switch back if they had the option.
The Smart meter program is a T.O.U. program in disguise,
they have the very same tracking capability.
Some companies were up front about that, some were not, however
ALL at some point when enough of these are installed will FORCE the T.O.U. rates on us,
with your local PUC blessing !

I worked with low income households on energy conservation.
It was typical to see several hundred dollar a month bills.
Most were in default when I arrived.
Combined with electric heat, they were doomed to poverty.

The whole boondoggle of smart meters was slipped in as part of
the grid “improvements” designed to facillitate power transmission
for solar farms and fields of clownflowers on a stick (aka windturbines)

Typically the utility and states with Federal grants pay for the infrastructure aka TAXES.

The investors run away with the high initial profits from the generation fields.
I predict they will sell those investments as soon as the clownflowers start racking up
HUGE repair bills, leaving the states to deal with fields of rusting useless eyesores.
      AKA MORE taxes.

Oh and guess who pays the lions share of the grid-“improvements” ?
The ratepayer of course, and will BE the reason why they
“need” to get us all on T.O.U. rates asap !

Two MAJOR topics never disclosed/discussed are:
      1) The ease of rolling blackouts, simply send the shut down signal,
which BTW the METER CAN BE HACKED as it is a simple dumb communications protocol,
a kid with a laptop and wireless could rack your bill to huge $ or shut down your power.

      2) see #1 and apply it to Terrorists, they just made it 1000 times easier to screw with the grid !

This lead-in to this post ends with the statement, “Any questions?” Well I have a few. What in the world does EMF stand for? Electromagnetic frequency? Electromagnetic force? That acronym has no defined meaning. and is presented here with no explanation.

My second question is, “How can the Blaze, in good conscience, create fear by preying on people’s ignorance about science? How can the Blaze editors maintain any claim of being journalists, let alone ethical journalists, when they cynically take advantage of the average American’s lack understanding of simple science.

Every person in the United States is constantly bombarded by electromagnetic radiation (EMF). Radio, AM and FM is EMF. Cell phones are obviously EMF, and that’s the same technology used in these devices. Everyone one on Earth is exposed to cosmic radiation every second. And then there’s EMF from your microwave, your Bluetooth devices, your wireless internet, and the power lines outside your house.

How do you live with yourself, how do you claim to be a decent human being putting this kind of nonsense on internet that only the those who our education system failed will believe?

@ PSYCHOSIS, I think JZS demonstrates superior knowledge in acknowledging what he doesn’t know. Certainly superior to what PSYCHOSIS has demonstrated.

Clearly we are in technological meltdown due to deficiencies in Public Education. The same public that is receptive to fear of atomic radiation is found to generate additional ratings by stoking fears of “evil EMF”.

I worked for several years before Obama on products that were later to be known as “Smart Meters”. Did most of two different designs. One contains a genuine cellphone.

At the time memory of rolling blackouts in California (due to idiocy of “managed competition”) were still fresh in our investor’s minds. One goal was to be able to provide the utility company the ability to disable water heaters, HVAC, electric dryers, etc, rather than have to shut down entire neighborhoods.

Other parts of the country bought our product in order to reduce the costs of reading meters. Sending someone to read your meter every month is not inexpensive.

But the biggest application was on the 10% of customers who are lazy at paying their electric bill. They almost always find the money to pay their bill the day the meter is disconnected. The utility company has to roll a truck with at least two guys, typically costs $200 but the PSC doesn’t allow them to charge that much. Sometimes police protection is required for this crew. And another $200 to reconnect after the bill is paid. With our product the power could be shut off remotely with a couple of mouse clicks. Very few problem customers had to have their power cut twice. On the humanitarian side of things with our system the utility company could restore power for just the night or other short term for cold spells or heat waves.

As for the RF (EMF) fear-mongering: none of these products use any technology or special FCC regulation that doesn’t already exist. Many use exactly the same broadband-over-powerline (BPL) technology that has been championed by the FCC as the solution to bring “everyone” inexpensive broadband. The same technology the ARRL has been fighting due to the idiocy of putting RF on unshielded power line wires. Its an RF polluter, but its not a health hazard.

As an amateur radio operator I’m thankful BPL has mostly fallen out of favor. Costs too much. Too much trouble. Too slow when compared to DSL, cable, and fiber.

Grumpy, I defer to to your much greater knowledge on the subject.

But one subject you’ve very carefully avoided is this. Metallic elements in the human body, such as tooth fillings, but also the iron in the blood’s hemoglobin, are receptive to electromagnetic waves. Those metallic elements vibrate through the bones, a vibration that is transmitted to the cranium and via that medium into the brain. By manipulating those vibrations, thoughts can be transmitted via the cerebral cortex into the human mind. These so called “smart meters” are smarter than most imagine. Through a special algorithm developed by scientists, these devices can transmit wavelengths and frequencies in such a way to directly influence thoughts, and thereby bring the receptor under government mind control.

Saving energy is only a pretext.

So, let me see if I understand this correctly. The power company comes to my house and removes the electric meter with no approval from me despite the fact that it works and the bills just keep going higher and higher because the government keeps approving rate increases. They do not charge me for this, but if I want the old meter back I have to pay a “tax.” Evidently, they have not spoken to the Queen of Logic and Newspeak, Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee, who informed us that the tax/penalty for not having health insurance is NOT a tax/penalty, it is an incentive. This is about as logical as the notice I got from the local electric company informing me that there would be a one-time charge of $25 on my next bill for the tree trimming work they would be doing to prevent branches from bringing down the power lines. The problem I see with that is twofold: first, why do I not have the option of trimming my own trees and second, ALL THE POWERLINES WHERE I LIVE ARE UNDERGROUND!

It’s unfortunate, but these “corporate” values are based on ‘typical’ installations and home wiring. I’m afraid that that in reality, no such thing actually exists.

Each and every home has a wiring scheme that is different. RF is a ‘tuned’ frequency. It requires intimate understanding of path length, conductive resistance, capacitive reactance, inductive reactance and other fundamentally critical circuit characteristics to become ‘effective’ as a means for anything even remotely resembling what has to be a form of reliable encryption.

Each and every mechanical connection, conductor, electronic circuit, breaker, fuse and device has to be characterized. Generalities are at best ‘assumptions’ about the entire circuit.

IMHBLO, this entire scheme is just one more effort at governmental robbery beyond taxation, (inaccurate reporting of) inflation, exploitation and manipulation of statistical social “measures” portrayed as metrics for comprehensive sympathetic understanding of infrastructure and ‘need.’

Government meets no “needs.” If it did we would have more power plants built. We would drill for more oil and gas. We would encourage entrepreneurship, lower corporate taxes (across the board, not just at “government” subsidized corporations, like GE). We would see restrictions lifted on farming, planting and use of public lands.

It’s everything entrepreneurs can do to create and sustain a business in this country, today.
Instead we see viral behavior of the government in sequestering land by the hundreds of thousands of acres. Eliminating access and exploration of resources without adequate explanation or scientific basis.

Something isn’t right here. This quadratic doesn’t add up.

Smart meters do one thing: Allow real time pricing of electricity which gives electric companies the ability to charge more for their product. Unless a consumer plans on drastically changing their daily circadian habits, say preparing dinner at 3am, then bills will only increase. And if you don’t alter your habits voluntarily then the power company will reach in and do it for you.

Of course this is President Sortero’s green dream, saying it will encourage (force) people to use less. Of course that will happen, unfortunately the result will be a lower standard of living and quality of life.

Only dumb people would accept a smart meter.

      Easy Fix

Jam the signal with another transmitter. They will then have to come out and read the meter instead of the truck running down the road picking up the signal. No way I would pay to get the old meter back.

This is no different then the guy that created the radar for police, he then turned around and made the same devive for the public to defeat it.

      Hmmm, I will make MILLIONS

My mother had a new pacemaker implanted in Oct. 2010. She died in Feb. this year due to it failing. We had a smart meter installed in December and she had gone down hill since then. Prior to that she felt fine and was doing great. We have been trying to figure out what happened since she passed away and now I am concerned that this may have had something to do with her death. I obtained her pacemaker after she passed away and contacted a lawyer but so far no luck. This may be another avenue I need to explore. I also have been having insomnia since it was installed….thankfully we are moving in two weeks.

I am a Californian. At Beck University I Iearned that the patent for the Smart Meter attachment to walls – business and residential- is owned by FEMA. (Think about that.) The device cannot be detached from the wall. To do that is illegal. The Smart Meter is a device to monitor your carbon emissions during different times of the day. The unit dwelller at each meter will be “taxed” for excess usage during peak hours and other times. This money/carbon will go to the California Climate Exchange, the Chicago Climate Exchange, etc. It is done regionally, by-passing local and state representative governments. It is used purposefully to redistribute wealth throughout the world and make certain investors very rich. It is possible to check on the above facts. Please, do that.

FIRST OF ALL, The SMART METER IS ALL ABOUT THE CARBON EMISSIONS, THE CLIMATE EXCHANGES, ANDTHE WORLD WIDE REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH AND MAKING AL GORE, ETC. RICH (mind ,it is OK with me to get rich, but this is all a sham for acquiring carbons). Do your own research. See my comment above.
SECOND, a smart meter was not attached to our house – up 80 stairs- on a California hillside – because someone in the house has asthma and I put up a sign stating such. I do not return calls to PG&E or answer theirs.

I don’t like the camera man in the Youtube video. It’s one thing to inform people, but he’s being underhanded.

Next thing will be a “Graduated energy rate” following peak usage levels and time of day… you watch!
Just like cell phone service: Peak/offpeak/weekend.

The only “Savings” is the labor and related cost savings by the Utility companies when they no longer use “Meter Readers”. Thousands of jobs lost Nationwide.
I don’t doubt that the electronic usage records gathered in “Smart Meter” networks will be used for other purposes, including product marketing demographics.

What do you know, another dumb idea from “smart” people in politics. When will we learn that politics only produces dummies? Give them 4 years of politicization and the dumb just sneaks up on them.
