Is America Headed for Yellowstone Super-Volcano Eruption Catastrophe?

“It would explode with a force a thousand times more powerful than the Mount St Helens eruption in 1980,” the UK’s Daily Mail warns. The world’s largest super-volcano located underneath the United States’ Yellowstone National Park is set to blow.
Spewing lava far into the sky, a cloud of plant-killing ash would fan out and dump a layer 10ft deep up to 1,000 miles away.
Two-thirds of the U.S. could become uninhabitable as toxic air sweeps through it, grounding thousands of flights and forcing millions to leave their homes.
This is the nightmare that scientists are predicting could happen if the world’s largest super-volcano erupts for the first time in 600,000 years, as it could do in the near future.
Yellowstone National Park’s caldera has erupted three times in the last 2.1 million years and researchers monitoring it say we could be in for another eruption.
Scientists have reportedly watched as the super-volcano situated underneath northwestern Wyoming rose at a record rate from 2004-2008 — an average of three inches every year. This rate of movement is more than three times greater than ever observed since such measurement records began in 1923.
Since 2008, the rate has slowed significantly, and the U.S. Geological Survey says there is “no evidence that another such cataclysmic eruption will occur at Yellowstone in the foreseeable future.”
But recurrence intervals are neither regular nor predictable and a lack of data has kept geologists from putting any exact date on any potential eruption warning.
When the eruption finally happens it will dwarf the effect of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which erupted in April last year, causing travel chaos around the world. …
Robert B. Smith, professor of geophysics at the University of Utah, who has led a recent study into the volcano, added: ‘Our best evidence is that the crustal magma chamber is filling with molten rock.
‘But we have no idea how long this process goes on before there either is an eruption or the inflow of molten rock stops and the caldera deflates again’.
The Yellowstone Caldera — or “cooking pot” — sits atop North America’s largest volcanic field. The most recent large blast from the Caldera happened an estimated 640,000 years ago and the most recent small eruption happened about 70,000 years ago.
‘Clearly some deep source of magma feeds Yellowstone, and since Yellowstone has erupted in the recent geological past, we know that there is magma at shallower depths too,’ said Dan Dzurisin, a Yellowstone expert with the U.S. Geological Survey at Cascades Volcano Observatory in Washington State.
‘There has to be magma in the crust, or we wouldn’t have all the hydrothermal activity that we have.
‘There is so much heat coming out of Yellowstone right now that if it wasn’t being reheated by magma, the whole system would have gone stone cold since the time of the last eruption 70,000 years ago.’

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 8:22amOK, I just spoke with Glenn… He says we’ll need 3-5 years worth of Food, don’t worry, he’ll sell it to us tonight. He also says we need to reinforce our bunke… I mean, fruit/root cellars, for the explosion. Now as a matter of breathing, we’ll need hundreds of filters for our gas masks and chem suits. Glenn figures at most we’ll need to be underground for 5 years. I’m optimistic. some god , gold, and guns and we should all be fine. This is exactly what the founders wanted for us. Lead on Glenn!

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 12:44pmThat kind of mitigation is way, way out of scale for any realistic engineering. It’s like trying to figure out how to change the temperature of the Great Lakes with a few thousand soda straws. The caldera may be overdue to blow in geological time, but that just means it was overdue when the pyramids were built and it will be overdue when Zephram Cochrane invents the warp drive.
It’s also a little presumptuous to think of cooling down the Yellowstone magma chamber. Even if you could, would you then inhibit the movement of the North American tectonic plate and would that then affect activity at the Cascadia, San Andreas and New Madrid fault boundaries? There’s a lot going on there.
I still think Obama and liberals are more of a cataclysmic threat than Yellowstone is.

You cannot refute that in that time the US government accrued more debt than in the entire previous history of the country. You cannot refute that bastardizing the business of Fannie Mae under the prodding and guidance of Barney Frank and Chris Dodd contributed massively to the situation we are all in now. You cannot refute the bastardizing of the currency that is occurring now. The list goes on.
I will not exonerate Republicans, but Obama and his socialist army are the current stewards of the progressive decline we are experiencing and they are the owners of the acceleration and transformation.

I can agree with them about how powerful it would be, but these idiots have no idea when this ling last erupted nor can they tell how old it is! We do not have the means and carbon dating only goes back a couple of thousand years and it is not 100% accurate!
Report Post »lobster
Posted on January 25, 2011 at 8:48amThey are clueless. All non-carbon 14 dating is,”What do you read, what do you need?. They’ve been trying to substantiate Darwins lies for years. Check it out, the Great Salt Lake contains 6 billion tons of salt. Next sentence salts are accumulating at a rate of 1 million tons per year. Simple math it “ain’t” an old earth. Incidently the same calculation applies for the Caspian Sea and the Dead Sea.
Report Post »ontherocks
Posted on January 25, 2011 at 8:57amGeologists and geochronologists do not use Carbon14 for age-dating of igneous rocks. One of the favored isotope/daughter product duos are Potassium40/Argon40. Radiometric age dating is not perfect, the idea is to give us a ballpark idea of the age of the igneous activity.
The swelling of the ground and the presence of small earthquakes http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Maps/special/Yellowstone.php suggests a possible eruption, but we can’t say when as these large volcanoes have a life-span in the millions of years (2.1 million years for this cluster of 3 calderas, each new one superimposed upon the previous one(s)). It could be 5 years, it could be 50,000. And if it erupts, it might be a small eruption. Only time will tell.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 9:12amThese types of hyperbolic comments are why liberals paint Conservatives as “anti-science“ and all Christians as ”young earthers”. There are other interpretations. Ultimately, we don’t find out the answers until “the great test is over” (when we die).
Features such as the Great Salt Lake, the Dead Sea, and the Caspian Sea are not terribly old features. Has anyone presented them as examples of evidence for an old earth?
As stated, radiometric age dates are not the be-all and end-all of geologic age estimates and no human endeavor is perfect. But it gives us a ballpark figure to work with (that may be adjusted as new info comes in or as new interpretations arise).

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 9:59amOnthe rocks,
Isotope dating, (carbon, potassium, argon) are based upon presumptions from geological strata dating. And geological strata dating is based upon isotope dating calculations. It’s a circular argument and nobody wins, nobody knows. None of it can be trusted as it can all be adjusted. If the glove don’t fit, you must acquit.
Report Post »MLOSuper
Posted on January 26, 2011 at 10:39amRadiocarbon dating only is good for 5000 years. As an astronomer, I have taken a few courses in Radiological Physics in which there is the explanation on the exponential decay of radioactive materials. As stated by OntheRocks, you can use different radioactive elements as dating indicators. The elements I have seen the data for are Polonium and Uranium for dating of meteorites and other extraterrestrial rocks. These decay on the order of 100′s of million of years and upwards depending on isotope. Do not discredit the nuclear physicists who have found these relationships in the lab, computer simulations and the universe as a whole. It is not a circular argument.
As a whole, I trust in God to save us. If He wills us to live through such hardships as a super volcano, he will show us the way to survive. I am not fretting over this.

As for the affects on SF in CA, sorry kids but it will survive since the major damage ends in the sierras. Me I’m not to concerned about either, and if I was it would more likely be the tsunami but even I hardly spend anytime thinking about that. I personally don’t think any of these things will happen and if it does it would be during the end times before the Lord returns. I know the scriptures mention these things will clearly happen. But if our generation is as correct about the coming of Christ in our day, as every other generation who has believed it in the past. Then we will be O.K. And if these things happen then look to the east. The man will be coming soon.

You can’t live your life in fear of remote “maybe”, “could”, “any time now” possibilities. Real dangers exist, but things like volcanoes exploding or meteorites smacking into us, while possible and historically verified, are matters out of our hands and things we cannot even hope to accurately predict. I’d rather live life to the fullest and get on with it, than sit around planning for 2/3 of the U.S. to be covered in volcanic soot.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 11:40amJJ: I have been aware of this Caldera for more than ten years and have read about geological evidence of it’s last eruption which shows that rock and ash from this volcano were found as far away as Missouri. If the area is covered in 10 feet of ash how would you expect it to be livable conditions. This isn‘t a scare tactic it’s reality. The timing of this story is questionable however because I have not seen any recent changes to this caldera that would make the story topical but this is a very real scenario. Did you know that the lake at Yellowstone is tilting causing what was once dry land to be submerged by water due to the lava build up beneath it? It is really interesting stuff.

Bombs exploding create a downward force against an object, the earth, and a subsequent shockwave. With a volcano erupting there’s got to be some thrust involved. Maybe this eruption would be equivalent to a course correction a space vehicle would make using thrusters or some other means of attitude adjustment.

Report Post »Ok, your silly statements are becoming worse and worse. Is this the first time you have ever heard this story, because I have known about it for years. This whole thing is VERY true, and SHOULD scare you. I saw the movie “2012” and thought it was great cinema and nothing else except for one part. Where Yellowstone explodes. This is fairly accurate of what will happen if she blows like she did 640,000 years ago, except MUCH faster and MUCH more destructive. It has been stated by geologists that a 60 mile radius from where the edge of the caldera explodes will be vaporized faster than if a modern nuclear warhead were detonated in the same place. The ammount of ash spewed into the atmosphere will cover the entire planet for at least two years, killing ALL vegitation, which then in turn kills 95% of the animals, leaving humans….well, screwed.
You do realize that evidence shows that as few as 10,000 years ago there were fewer than 9,000 humans on the earth due to the ice age that was occuring at the time?
Maybe instead of trying to be the first idiot responder to the first poster, you should concentrate on getting your facts right and posting something intellegent IF you are actually able to find any evidence that this story is nothing more than “scare tactic”

When the supervolcano Krakatoa erupted in the 1800′s, the suspended ash cooled the earth causing snows in summertime across the northern hemisphere and disrupted weather patterns in both hemispheres. It caused famine and hardship for over two years. It is not a scare tactic. When Yellowstone goes up again it will easily become the greatest tragedy in recorded history. Krakatoa was an island and the physical destruction was limited to Indonesia. Yellowstone is in the western US and the destruction will make Krakatoa look like Mount St. Helens in comparision.
