Is Christian Football Star Tim Tebow Really Guilty of ‘Blasphemy’?

Charging blasphemy, which is “the crime of assuming to oneself the rights or qualities of God,” is no small accusation. Yet, it’s exactly the charge being thrown at Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.
Tebow, an unabashed evangelical Christian, has made his faith known for years. Thus, it was no surprise that, with his recent NFL challenges in mind (he’s been named the backup for Kyle Orton), the 24-year-old told Denver Post columnist Woody Paige the following: “I’m relying as always on my faith.” This statement, in itself, shows that the famed football player believes strongly in his faith.
But, it was this very comment that sent CBS News’ Gregg Doyel into a tizzy. In a piece published earlier this month, Doyel targeted Tebow’s aforementioned stance on faith and tied it to unrealistic expectations he believes the young player has. Doyel writes:
He has gone through life believing — knowing — that God’s plan for him involves the spectacular, not the mundane. It’s kind of like reincarnation: People who believe in that sort of thing tend to think they were someone famous in a previous life. I’ve never heard anyone say that, in another life, they shoveled out stables for a small farm in Kansas.
He went on to quip, “He’ll make it in this league — for the Bible tells him so.” While this seems like negative commentary on Christianity, Doyel says it’s something very different. In his article, he explains that he’s not against religion, nor is he against Tebow’s belief system. He even admits to, himself, being a churchgoer and an admitted sinner.
In the end, Doyel claims that although Tebow is “nice,” his comments about the role of faith in his life aren’t realistic. He writes:
But his faith baffles me, or at least the way he expresses his faith, because it never allows for personal failure — and that’s not the world we live in…Tebow has basically said, and I’m paraphrasing here, “I’ll be a starter in this league because God loves me that much.”
…what if God’s mysterious plan for Tebow is to watch from the sideline? God doesn’t plan for every Christian quarterback to be a starter, and as far as I know, He doesn’t play favorites. Not even for Tim Tebow.
Doyel concluded his piece by calling Tebow out for “blasphemy.” As a result of his negative views on Tebow, the sports reporter has received an influx of hate mail. So much so that on Monday, he Tweeted the following:
A long list of negative responses to Doyel’s commentary can be found here. While not all of the messages would be considered “hate,” many (as highlighted in the above Tweet) have been less than favorable to the writer. The USA Today highlights just two of these exchanges:
A reader named Chance Jones wrote he found Doyel’s article “extremely offensive,” that he forwarded his objections to CBS Sports and that he would no longer be a customer. “You’ll be back. When you’re finished burning books,” responded Doyel.
Another reader named Heather B. wrote the “ignorant” Doyel is “going to hell.”
Pretty strong responses, right? At the end of the day, the debate here is over whether Tebow has a realistic outlook on the role of faith in his life or whether he simply expects God to bestow upon him any and everything he’d like.

Considering that the entire firestorm was set off by Tebow’s words — “I’m relying as always on my faith” — it might be better for individuals who are curious about this matter to speak with him before coming to a definitive conclusion. At the end of the day, faith is personal and Tebow may (or may not) have information that puts his views into a more digestible context.

When he said he puts his “faith” in God it does not mean he expects to be a pro bowler. He has put his faith in God’s plan, whatever that is!!!. I’m on the outside looking in but for someone such as myself, who like S.E. Cupp, inspires one day to be religious, I find it a good thing when professional athletes like a Tebow, a Reggie White or a Brad Lidge profess their faith. This is also part of the reason why I admire and listen to Glenn Beck and Dennis Prager.

Posted on August 16, 2011 at 3:27pmI am a christian but I have a problem with both Tebow and the reporter.Blasphemy is when you deny Jesus as God and do not accept his death on the cross for the salvation of your soul. Second, if the reporter paraphrased what Tebow said correctly I have a problem with that, that God loved Tebow so he would be a starter. Yes God has a plan for all his children, but it may not be as we see it. So with Tebow only time will tell. I liked the working of the muscle analogy. The only thing I would add is when you are in the desert you will grow stronger in faith or you will grow bitter.
Eample, when my oldest daughter was 12 we had moved to Washington to help a pastor start a church. The pasrors wife and I had grown c;ose. One day she said something that hurt me deeply. Bill could tell I was struggling with the Lord over this. He said,”Vicki what if the Lord took one of our girls? Would you still love him, would you still serve him? I honestly did not know. My girls I loved and cherished. I did not know if I could love a God that would take them from me.
Five years later the answer came, at 17 my daughter suddently died. They preformed an autopsy and could find no medical reason for death, no drugs nor foul play. Yet she was dead. Our church has morning worship and communion. I went everday for the first year after her death. Durning the griveing process I drew closer to the Lord that I had ever been, and loved him deeper. Lord showed me as much as I loved Kim he loved her

That athletes say praise God for scoring a touchdown, but they never say, “the good Lord tripped me up behind the line of scrimmage”…funny bit, anyway, this guy is wrong here and so was George for the most part. If Tim Tebow’s throwing arm fell off, he would say that is the Lord’s plan for me and I accept it, I accept the blessings and the challenges he puts before me and I will make the best of what he has given me.

Sorry Doyel, but you stuck your foot in your mouth on this one. Your understanding of his statement couldn’t be any further from accurate. “Relying” on faith does NOT mean that you are trusting God for success. It DOES mean that you are trusting God to be in control, and he’ll do whatever is best for you… which could very well mean the bench.
Would Tebow LIKE being on the bench? No. But if he ends up there, he‘ll believe that’s where God needed him to be… he’ll be “relying” on his faith to get him through. Tebow is definitely not a blasphemer, but Doyel is most definitely a JERK. You couldn’t ask the man what he meant by those words before you accused him of heresy in front of a national audience. In my opinion, Doyel is guilty of libel and owes Tebow a huge apology.

When Doyel finishes seminary I might be more interested in his opinion on what qualifies as blasphemy. Ok… probably not even then… but certainly not before!

(Evangelicals tend to view “things” as those worldly things that WE want such as success, material wealth, etc, this is the “Health and Wealth” Gospel that is being taught in many churches. Hebrews 11:1 is refering to spiritull “things” such as Gods mercy and love, not material wealth and success in this life) Jesus said “the words I speak are spirit and life, the flesh is of no avail” the flesh cannot understand Jesus words, only the spirit. As Christians we are called to trust in God and HOPE for spiritual things not wordly material things. I think this is the point the Journalist was making and I agree…….

We learned lots from Kurt Warner (who also had critics). I wish Mr. Tebow the best. remember 2 other qbs that these same critics ridiculed; Doug Flutie and Tom Brady. Some people when you put chips on their shoulders prove to everyone their character. I expect great things from Tebow.

They are, in fact, tools. Not ‘tools’ under contemporary usage of the term, but rather ‘tools’ of darkness. Yes, evil DOES exist in the world and has no problem using unknowing people in any way possible to paint Christians as a bunch of slope-headed rednecks that aren’t able to develop an original thought. God wants Christians to be about getting HIS will done. A Christian brings glory to God by having faith in God when things go the way we want them to, but even more so when life doesn’t go as expected. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not looking down on Tebow. I think he’s doing a great job of glorifying God. He‘s just gotta learn a lesson from this by figuring out that God’s script doesn’t usually line up with how we would write the script for our lives.

However, the idea that he has not gotten enough media attention is laughable. Sure, some folks are out there to tear him down, but this is professional sports. In case you haven’t noticed, every player who isn’t a pro bowler at his position (and even some who are) gets torn down by someone. The fact that he has gotten this much media attention has more to do with his notoriety and fan support than the other way around. Every morning on SportsCenter when he was at Florida was Tebow, Tebow, Tebow. Now he is in the NFL, has started 3 games, and it’s Tebow, Tebow, Tebow. Sheesh

I think a lot of the media in Denver hates Tim Tebow the same as many in the national media hate Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachman. They wish to destroy and discredit people of faith as much as possible. I realize this writer is not a Denver area media personality but his stance on Tebow reflects much of the Denver medias portrayal of Tebow. I for one am rooting for Tebow!

In the end, he sounded too judgmental to be listened to and very ignorant about scripture to be taken seriously. I think by his fruits, he’s known as siding with the enemies of God, and could be on the path to Hades. Yet, that’s just my perception and the final call (sports pun intended) will be made by The Lord not me. And I see the anger, and it’s understandable. Who can blame folks getting ticked off for someone insulting Their God who’s kept them out of despair, drugs, committing suicide, etc?
However, for the ultra pious who claim to have done no wrong, read the first 6-7 verses of Matthew 7. Also read Romans 12:3. Know that while we’ve been saved, we are still just as sinful as others. Tebow, IMHO, is one of the good guys, and unfortunately our response, like mine 90% of the time, sucks. I suck at handling people who push my buttons and I do not suffer by fools very well. Probably cuz I was such a fool before The Lord thumped my skull, and got me turned around.

They weren’t concerned with getting some starting job… they were concerned with God’s will. That is how we should be as Christians. I’m speaking to myself, as well. There is a type of Christianity that is mostly about prosperity here in this life. It is not Biblical Christianity.

Maybe this storm will teach this player some humility. This storm isn’t devestating, but depending on Tebows responses to this challenge (free will) who knows what the future may hold?
We must be molded. That’s not a peaceful process. Extreme temperatures, pressures. Cutting, carving. I thank God for my challenges. It means that I am being shaped into what I should be, instead of what I am.

I’m not a Tebow fan, but if Tebow has that kind of faith that God put him in this position to succeed and use the platform to reach millions, there is no blasphemy. And I applaud him for having that kind of faith, for realizing that he didn’t get where he is on his own.
It‘s how Tebow reacts if God’s plans for him turn out to be different than what he expects that may be the problem. Time will tell.

5) Has drawn the nation into a discussion regarding faith and Christianity
Do you really think it’s about his success in football?
And, by the way, ya think maybe Doyel should have mentioned all of the charity work this kid has done throughout his life? Self-centered? Blasphemy? I don’t think so!
This guy is a true American and a great sole! He is an inspiration to our youth in a POSITIVE way. That’s why the Left have their panties in a bunch (literally). They need to keep the youth stupid, poor and Godless to control them.

Of course, that team would go to court and say, “just because we have God on our side, helping us win is not an advantage.” The court would disagree and then the team would appeal by stating, “There is absolutely NO proof that our winning had anything to do with God and their is no way to prove it”. Yup, thats is the way it would go.

Your premise is wrong. There are no grounds for qualifying or judging what GOD does in our legal system (i.e., being “unfair” and giving “illegal” adavantages). So that lawsuit would not hold up in court.
Just for argument’s sake, your conclusion is also wrong. Those devout Christians would jump for joy if only the court could see that the “good news” is for WHOMSOEVER WILL BELIEVE. We are all free to come to Him and experience his love and blessings.
