Is Christianity Negatively Impacting American Society?

Does Christianity — the majority faith in America — have a positive or negative impact over society? Considering the vast majority of the population that claims to have an allegiance to the faith, this is a question worth asking. A new study from Grey Matter Research & Consulting finds both negative and positive perceptions that Americans have about Christianity’s impact on culture.
The study found that there were only two key areas in which strong majorities claim to see Christianity’s benefits in America. Seventy-two percent of respondents claim that the faith system is good for helping poor people in need and for raising children with good morals. Overall, 52 percent report that they believe Christianity helps to keep the U.S. a “strong nation.”
Despite these positives, there are a number of areas where substantial portions of the nation see Christianity has having either a negative impact or no influence at all. For many believers, these perceptions will be met with concern.
In the poll, respondents were provided with 16 issues and were asked if they believe that the Christian faith has a positive impact, a negative impact or no impact at all on each. These issues included: crime, business ethics, the role of women, how people treat the environment, and sexuality, among others.
When it comes to sexuality, an issue that some in the Christian movement have called a losing battle for believers, only 26 percent of respondents said that the faith system has a positive impact. Thirty-seven percent see no impact at all and another 37 percent say that Christianity has a negative impact on the issue.
Here are some of the proportions on key indicators, as presented by Grey Matter:
- The amount of crime in society: 45% positive, 33% no impact, 22% negative
- The amount of poverty in society: 41% positive, 36% no impact, 23% negative
- The amount of violence in society: 39% positive, 34% no impact, 27% negative
- Differences of opinion being discussed in a civil manner: 38% positive, 42% no impact, 20% negative
- Ethics in the business world: 34% positive, 44% no impact, 22% negative
- Participation in politics and voting: 33% positive, 44% no impact, 23% negative
- The amount of substance abuse in society: 33% positive, 43% no impact, 23% negative
- How people treat the environment: 30% positive, 54% no impact, 15% negative
Overall, perceptions surrounding the faith are a mixed bag. If the 16 issues are averaged together, 42 percent of Americans report either a “strongly positive” or “somewhat positive” view of Christianity’s impact. Thirty-seven percent see no impact and 22 percent claim that it has either a “strongly” or “somewhat” negative influence. Grey Matter explains:
If the 16 different areas are averaged together, the typical perception of the Christian faith is that 13% of all Americans believe it has a strongly positive impact, 29% see a somewhat positive impact, 37% see no impact, 15% perceive a somewhat negative impact, and 7% believe the faith has a strongly negative impact on American society.
Consistently, Christianity is viewed very differently by different types of Americans. As might be expected, the biggest differences are by religious belief and participation. Yet Christians are not as positive toward the impact of the Christian faith – nor non-Christians as negative –as might be assumed.
Among people who either attend a Christian church (broadly defined to include Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, LDS, etc.) or who claim their religious identity as Christian, when all of the individual ratings are combined, the average is that 15% rate the impact of Christianity as strongly positive, 33% as somewhat positive, 35% as neutral, 13% as somewhat negative, and 4% as strongly negative. These numbers are very similar to the average rating by the total population, because seven out of ten Americans identify with the Christian faith.
The geographically representative poll took into account 1,011 American adults and is accurate to within ±3.1 percentage points. You can read more about this intriguing study here. What do you think? Does Christianity have an overall positive or negative impact on society? Take our poll:

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 7:20pmThe world, and its ruler, Satan, control the media, our universities, all our schools, Hollywood and almost all the entertainment industry. Do you expect anything but negative things to be portrayed by them ? Even our childrens cartoons are of a sexual nature and promote witches, warlocks, vampires and werewolves. Spells and potions are the norm even in the cartoons.
But in the last few yrs the amount of and degree of hatred against Christianity is through the roof.
As little as ten yrs ago if a public official or entertainer said the things they are saying now we would have run them out on a rail. Now its ho-hum.
We need to remind ourselves that this world is not our home, we are just passing through, Christians that is. The world hates us, they hate the light and the salt that we bring into it.
Its like being asleep in a very dark room and someone slams the door open and turns on the overhead light. THAT is the same reaction unsaved sinners have when you tell them the good news of the gospel message.
Christian parents PLEASE do not let your children watch the cartoons of today, it will cause nothing but problems later. Sit down and watch them and listen and look for the hidden messages.

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 8:13pmThanks Palerider54 you hit the nail on the head. I would go further and say the forces of hate towards Christianity in America are yet another indication of what the Bible prophesied would happen at the end of the age. In Thessalonians it speaks of the falling away-falling away from what – the truth. America once honored and exalted Biblical truth and Christian teachings now it is mocked.
God’s Word is no longer just a academic debate between theologians and skeptics, but has now become a target to be destroyed by the mainstream media, corporate whores, lawyers, homosexual activists, militant feminists, universities , judges, and Marxist politicians who took an oath on the Judeo Christian Bible to defend and uphold the US Constitution on under the pretense that God watches and hears all.
The Bible once America’s guidepost for truth and comfort is no longer the divine code for personal conduct that compels the words and actions of American leadership and citizenry. Today many are compelled by a perverse value system that has not been seen since the fall of Rome. The evidence of this reality is seen by policies and behaviors that are not driven by a selfless act of public service and moral truth but by a supernatural appetite for perpetual power and carnal satisfaction at any cost. Today with the average American standard of conduct lowered at every turn America has enabled the Godless liberal to gain control.

It‘s not a destination it’s a journey. And as with all journeys there are pitfalls, flat tires, wrong turns, bad weather basicly obstacles to over come. No one’s perfect and no one will ever achieve perfect but as Christians we must seek out our imperfects and immoral tendencies and strive to stop doing them.

Posted on April 13, 2012 at 1:29pmQuestion like this are off a little. Christianity at first was an offensive word, like samaritan as in the saying ‘the good smaritan.’ Jews considered samritans as ungodly and infidels. Christians were the slang name of the first believers by the jews and then by the citizens of Rome. To go to the arena to watch christians be killed by lions was a sport. Christians were put on post and set afire to light the walkway. They were called christians because of that crazy jewish infidel named Jesus that was saying he is the son of God, blasphemy. They were called christians because they followed that cult sect. This was the attitude at that time.
Today people still call believers christians with the same type of disregard and even hate. For this reason I think we should remember this and not use that word and replace it each time as what we really are. Believers. Believers in Christ. This points to Christ and not to man. Man is a failure. Unbelievers can take or leave Jesus. Its their future once warned.

My Pastor says many approach it like buying fire insurance. When you buy it you really don’t expect you house to burn but “JUST IN CASE IT IS TRUE” you want to be covered.
Sadly many attend Church every Sunday, put money in the plate, and live a decent moral life, but do it because they have been raised to believe that is simply what GOOD people do, and have never truly accepted Christ into their lives.
I can think of nothing more sad than when one of these people approach Jesus and here those terrible words, depart from me, I never knew you.
Jesus lives in my heart, I do go to Church, three times a week, sing in the choir, put over 10 per cent of my income in the collection plate, and donate my time and other offerings weekly. I study the Word of God every night, and I truly seek out ways for my life to reflect the love Jesus has for me.
But none of these things will guarantee my acceptance into heaven, I still have the sin nature I inherited from my earthly father, but , I AM going to heaven when I die, NOT because I am a good person, because I am not, compared to Jesus, I am filthy. I am going to HEAVEN because I have accepted and serve a righteous and merciful God, his name is JESUS. To all who don’t truly know him, PLEASE let me lead you to him.

That designation is not an accurate label. It would be better to use the word “Christendom” to describe the various and confusing ideas of religious beliefs as they mix and mingle with society. The vast and numerous religions calling themselves Christian does not make them Christian. True Christianity is very different in practice and is easily seen by sincere lovers of Christ. False Christians outnumber the true ones and society has come to think of Christianity through the foggy lens of these false Christians. – Matthew 7:13-27

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 6:59pmThere is also growing evidence that the delusion of religion may cause significant social dysfunction. Statistical research is revealing the problems that go with religious delusion.
For example, a recent article in the Journal of Religion and Society points out that religion is correlated to the significant social difficulties that we can see in America:
In general, higher rates of belief in and worship of a creator correlate with higher rates of homicide, juvenile and early adult mortality, STD infection rates, teen pregnancy, and abortion in the prosperous democracies.
The most theistic prosperous democracy, the U.S., is exceptional, but not in the manner predicted. The United States is almost always the most dysfunctional of the developed democracies, sometimes spectacularly so, and almost always scores poorly.
The view of the U.S. as a “shining city on the hill” to the rest of the world is falsified when it comes to basic measures of societal health.
The prevailing view is that religion is harmless even if it is delusional.
That turns out not to be the case. America is the most religious country of those studied in the developed world. America also has the biggest problems in terms of things like homicide, juvenile and early adult mortality, STD infection rates, teen pregnancy, and abortion.
Religion is delusion. A planet full of delusional people is not healthy.

Therefore, the question I would ask you to consider right now is simple: Why is it that human beings can detect fairy tales with complete certainty when those fairy tales come from other faiths, but they cannot detect the fairy tales that underpin their own faith? Why do they believe their chosen fairy tale with unrelenting passion and reject the others as nonsense? For example:
Christians know that when the Egyptians built gigantic pyramids and mummified the bodies of their pharaohs, that it was a total waste of time — otherwise Christians would build pyramids.
Christians know that when the Aztecs carved the heart out of a virgin and ate it, that it accomplished nothing — otherwise Christians would kill virgins.
Christians know that when Muslims face Mecca to pray, that it is pointless — otherwise Christians would face Mecca when they pray.
Christians know that when Jews keep meat and dairy products separate, that they are wasting their time — otherwise the cheeseburger would not be an American obsession.

Unfortunately, those you cite didn’t accomplish that miracle. Jesus Christ was crucified on my behalf, your behalf and behalf of all mankind, past present and future. Salvation is a gift. It is free. Believing in and accepting the sacrifice of God’s only begotten son for remission of the sinful nature we are born affords us the promise of eternal life for those who trust him. Those who believe, receive the Holy Spirit, the Comforter. It is this Spirit that dwells in the hearts of all who are redeemed. Whether you can grasp it or not, it is this very Holy Spirit if not quenched that guides the hearts and minds of those who believe and post here. If you have not received him as your own personal savior, you cannot even begin to grasp the significance of the finished work of the cross.

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 7:02pmIt is time for Americans, both religious and non, to openly discuss the evidence showing that God is imaginary. Let’s stop hiding the discussion, or attacking it. Let’s talk openly. Let us have an honest, open, rational, civil conversation about all of the evidence that we have seen in this book. If we have that debate in an open forum, the majority of us will reach agreement that God is imaginary.

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 8:07pmYes, let‘s debate the issue of ’is there a God’…Ok, I’m game, but I am fully persuaded that indeed, Jesus Christ is God, a very God and a man, a very man. You see, Ralphie, when you trust Christ; He sends the Holy Spirit to confirm all that is necessary to believe in Him. To the non believer it is foolishness which I totally get. But, I am convinced and have the inner peace that salvation brings to a believer. It’s really impossible to explain to a non believer, but I do try. I hope you inquire further and let the truth set you free.

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 10:00pmRalpie, you might get a more civilized debate if you yourself were more civilized instead of saying those who believe in God are delusional.

Posted on April 13, 2012 at 10:46amRalpie – Hitler was NOT a Christian. He USED Christianity as a front. However, as he gained power, he replaced all the religious symbol with…. pictures of himself.
Please, Ralpie – do a little research first.
This country guarantees your right to not believe. So be it. There are many who call themselves Christians but are acting in anything but a Christian manner. However, we are anything but perfect people – only Jesus was sent as perfect. And the early Christians understood this and had instructions as to how to handle those who did wrong in the eyes of the church. I can fully understand why atheists see Christians as hypocrites… but atheists have no set of morals that guide their behavior, so no matter what you do, you don’t see the hypocricy in your own actions and words.

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 6:51pmI would say that, to a large extent, the “negative perception” is due to the staggering amount of anti-Christian propaganda promoted in the universities and the media, and not reflecting so much an actual “impact.”

Posted on April 12, 2012 at 6:49pmNo, Obama has a negative impact on society. Ever since prayer was taken out of school, it’s OK to be gay, and teenage sex has been the norm that’s when we turned the corner.

Posted on April 13, 2012 at 3:46pmYou cannot blame “prayer being taken out of the schools” for any of the issues in America. If people fall, JUST because ONE place is removed [when they are free to pray in their homes, churches, private lives], then the school aspect is just a cop out. AND, if that was all it took, then those who fall into “negative influences” did so because they were never serious about their “faith” anyway.
