Is CNN Story on Anti-Gay Marriage DVD Biased in Favor of Church Opponents?

A DVD outlining the Catholic Church’s opposition to same-sex marriage has sparked debate in one Minneapolis, Minn., diocese, where a number of parishioners are deriding the message as “anti-gay” — and drawn the attention of national media.

More than 400,000 of the DVDs were mailed to homes of Catholics across the state, courtesy of Minnesota bishops objecting the campaign to legalize gay marriage.  The Star Tribune reports:

The 18-minute DVD includes an appearance from St. Paul and Minneapolis Archbishop John Nienstedt in which he says it is time for Minnesotans — not the “ruling elite” of legislators and judges — to vote on a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman. Thirty-one states have passed such an amendment.

“It is the people themselves and not politicians or judges who should make this decision,” Nienstedt says on the DVD. “This is the only way to put the one man, one woman definition of marriage beyond the reach of the courts and politicians.”

Gay marriage advocates in and around Minneapolis are calling the video a political tool, meant to garner support for conservative politicians in the state.

“It’s an effort to have Catholics vote the way the bishops want them to vote, but by and large Catholic voters are well-educated and they are independent-minded,” Brian McNeill, president of Dignity Twin Cities, told the Star-Tribune. The activist group for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people reportedly works to overturn what it calls the “antiquated sexual theology” of the church. “We would like to talk to the archbishop about it, but he won’t talk to us,” McNeill said.

CNN has released this video report on the controversy:

I find it refreshing to see a man of the cloth hold to the morals of the scriptures. I agree with the mother of the homosexual daughter, that there’s so much pain, but from what I read in the scriptures and my own personal experience, life is not painless; also that pain comes from not doing according to will of God (be it the individual or those around the individuals).

Who one chooses to cuddle with is up to the individual but marriage is legal and religious and just as it is legally wrong for a child to marry (disgusting and morally heinous), it is, and should remain, legally wrong for persons to marry persons of the same gender, inanimate objects, multiple partners, specifically determined time (the weekend, week, 3 year….marriage).

I find it interesting that all people are offered the right to marry but that this woman and her daughter feel they need the extra right of changing the defining rules and purpose of marriage. All, this woman’s daughter included, have the right to marry but she, as too with me, don’t have the right to marry just anything/one. The right to legally marry is restricted by age and gender; thus we all, who are of age, may marry but we, just as those underage, must marry within the bounds set e.g. one man and one woman no more no less no different.

From this woman’s words I get the feeling this woman has painted Christ in her heart and he looks suspiciously like her. She doesn’t seem to recall that Christ called one of his closest disciples Satan, or that he trashed and whipped the money changers in the Temple, or that he refused those who were not of the flock to which He was sent to minister, that he allowed Mary and Martha to suffer and morn the death of their brother as he took his time coming to Lazarus’s grave, that he understood that the blind man had been blind from birth (with all the suffering that caused him and his family) so that He could do His work of healing. This woman has played the situational ethics game and applied it to Christ. This is a very dangerous game. She is upset because her religious shepherd did not express regret or change his gospel base view but instead, like a good shepherd whose job is to keep the flock (this woman) safe rebuked her and called her to repentance reinforcing the consequences if she failed to do so. That is what a good shepherd does. They don’t just let the sheep go into harms way, they protect them they send the dogs to change the sheep’s direction before they get so far they can’t come back.

Marriage is the ultimate gift between one man and one woman. It is total self sacrificing giving of one’s whole person to the other. The marriage act is between one man and one woman with the openness to new life where the 2 become one and God enters with procreation. To perform the sexual marriatal act outside of marriage is profanity where it becomes self centered and self gratifying where the other is used as an object and the other’s personhood is subjugated.

No one truly knows how homosexuality occurs. Individuals attracted to the same sex are to exercise self control and will, not to engage in the hedonistic behavior. Being homosexual is not a “sin” but engaging in self gratifying sex and using others as objects is a “sin”.

The human body is beautiful and humans are not animals. Did you ever wonder why Adam and Eve were naked? We have intellect and free will. We are not governed by instinct.

For those who do not believe in God do not possess the intellect to phantom His existence which is outside space and time. We humans are bound to space and time and generally can not think beyond these limited dimensions. Many individuals who say God is a myth have not studied theology and rely on vague catechises from their childhood. It is like saying you know calculus by being taught simple addition.

We need to uphold the definition of marriage. Now, we just need to get the right definition. There is the one white man to one white woman definition that existed in this country, is that it? Or maybe it’s the one where the lord of the land forced marriage on two of his subjects in order to increase his working force, is that it? I know, it’s the one where one man and one woman got married, but the lord of the land was allowed to have his way with the woman on her wedding night, that’s gotta be the one!

Sorry MRBUTCHER, but you are a sad lot. The joy of the Lord is my strength. The fool says in his heart, “There is no G-d.” The evidence is all around, but you refuse to see it. Explain to me how cells just got together and decided to become an eye. Explain to me how those cells decided to join themselves to the brain and give vision. Explain to me how every animal on earth developed a system to defend it self and learned to overcome things that kill other animals. Explain to me how precise organization came from a big bang. An explosion never creates organization, only chaos. Explain how things spoken thousands of years ago come to pass without someone knowing the end from the beginning. Explain to me life. where did it come from, and why is it not in our power to restore it? If things just happened by chance, why can’t all of our scientists recreate it in a lab? If I take apart a watch and put the pieces into a box and shake the box, how long must I shake the box before the watch comes together and shows the correct time by chance? All the pieces are there. Everything that is needed is there except for one thing. The designer. The universe has a design. If something has a design, there has to be a designer. You sir are the one denying reality.

There is a God and we see him all around us and within ourselves. But to believe there is no God is to deny “purpose”. There is no proof that God doesn’t exist – he lives outside our world, but this is what Universities are teaching. This is a disordered reality no different than to believe material things don’t exist. It is this distortion that God does not exist and the evil that it causes – especially when a government turns on God. Truth will set us free.

I reject gays, for the simple fact as they have rejected God’s greatest gift to man, which is a woman. So too I reject lesbians, because they reject men, but still want children without a man.
Staright and simple it’s an immoral choice, which goes against the fundamentals of ‘Natural Instinct’ designed by GOD.

Word of law or word of God? That is the choice. We know what the rules are both ways problem is if you believe the word of God then that by what we have been taught in the Bible it is man and woman, and not for nothing but I have never heardof a lawyer throw a thundrbolt or creat a world. Tlaw on the other hand has elfprobigated chaos and that is their side of the story. Rules are rules and we know what mandated the church to set up theirs.

The Roman Catholic Church does not recognize civil marriages, straight or gay, as being the sacrament of marriage. So who cares what civil union takes place? My only concern would be if my church married gays or if they were forced to by law. I can see churches being persecuted for refusing to marry gays. I could see charges of discrimination being thrown about. Otherwise, freedom of speech, while we still have it anyway.

There is an uneasy restlessness with true Christians from all around the world. If the world penetrates the Body of Christ any deeper we will be praying in our basements in the dark of night. The day when I am afraid to say something concerning God within the walls of his house, I’m heading for the hills. I believe the Bible in its entirety, so that will be a very good sign that our day of Redemption is upon us. O’Israel

Well said and Of course its coming because it is written so just head for the mountains when it does. We just have to hold out for three years hiding from the Beast police. I believe we are closer than any one person can imagine I can see the restlessness in my church and with Christians around the world.

Marriage reflects the natural moral and social law evidenced the world over. As the late British social anthropologist Joseph Daniel Unwin noted in his study of world civilizations, any society that devalued the nuclear family soon lost what he called “expansive energy,” which might best be summarized as society’s will to make things better for the next generation. In fact, no society that has loosened sexual morality outside of man-woman marriage has survived.

Analyzing studies of cultures spanning several thousands of years on several continents, Harvard sociologist Pitirim Sorokin found that virtually all political revolutions that brought about societal collapse were preceded by a sexual revolution in which marriage and family were devalued by the culture’s acceptance of homosexuality.

When marriage loses its unique status, women and children most frequently are the direct victims. Giving same-sex relationships or out-of-wedlock heterosexual couples the same special status and benefits as the marital bond would not be the expansion of a right but the destruction of a principle. . If the one-man/one-woman definition of marriage is broken, there is no logical stopping point for continuing the assault on marriage.

As has been said only God created marriage, not man, if you are a good Catholic, no matter how often you attend Mass, you support the teachings of the church. The church it self cannot change the word of God, we should love the sinner, however, we would be wicked to embrace the sin. There is obviously a division coming in the church because of this great sin. I will support the Church!

I don’t care what homosexuals do. They are free to do whatever they wish just as freely as heterosexuals. However, no one has the right to redefine a word. Never in the history of the world has the word “marriage” meant anything other than a relationship between a man and a woman. If they want to create a word for a “committed” homosexual relationship, that is fine, but you can’t take a word that already has one meaning and give it another.

Secondly, the state should have nothing to do with marriage regardless of heterosexual or homosexual. Marriage is a creation of the church, not the state. For the most part, I really wish the state would butt out of marriage all together.

A vote otherwise is in direct violation of what HE intended, Like it or not that is the way it is. If you don’t like it talk to HIM about it and HE will set you straight.

      WALKWITHME1966

Before Christianity? What kind of statement is that Christ has been beside the Father since the beginning of the beginning? People who believe the Christian faith began with Christ’s appearance on earth are misinformed; before he came we were waiting on him John the Baptist mentioned him several times and today we wait for his return. God ordained the first marriage between Adam and Eve I can assure you they weren’t fornicating. If you know of a history before the beginning of the beginning then please document it. By the way churches don’t own anything that’s correct, but God owns all and he is the one who is being misrepresented in the argument so I will represent him.

In the New Testament marriage is mentioned 19 times. In the Old Testament it is mentioned three times which disputes your statement. King James Version

      1. Gen 34:9 And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.
      2. Deu 7:3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.
      3. Jos 23:12 Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:

If you are a Christian please do your homework before speaking it does a disservice to your witness and may lead young Christians astray. Be Blessed

Gays are disordered. They need help. Even if they were allowed to marry, the life span of a gay male will still be 46, and the highest percentage of domestic violence will still be commited by lesbian couples. Allowing gay marriage is just another nail in the coffin of this country. Is this hate speech? Tough, its the truth. If God says marriage is between a man and a women, then case closed.

Captain you are arguing two completely contradictory things. If the state butts out of marriage, then we will have gay marriage. With hundreds of religious sects in this country there’s bound to be at least one that’s willing to perform same-sex marriages if the government would stop trying to control the definition of marriage.
