Is Emphasizing Patriotism Romney’s Key to the White House?

Romney Emphasizes Patriotism on Campaign Trail
(The Blaze/AP)Mitt Romney talks about his love for America almost every day. Twice now, the Republican presidential front-runner has even broken into song.

“Oh beautiful, for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain,” Romney crooned Wednesday, standing on stage in a warehouse here as the crowd sang along. He did the same earlier in the week at a Florida retirement community.

Those performances were a campaign-trail crescendo of sorts for Romney. He has spent months traveling — from Iowa to New Hampshire to South Carolina to Florida — proclaiming “I love America” and declaring his appreciation for what he often calls “the national hymns of our nation.” Among them: “The Star-Spangled Banner“ and ”America the Beautiful,” which he calls his favorite partly because his mother used to sing it.

While all politicians emphasize patriotism, Romney arguably takes it to a whole new level. He sprinkles this adoration-of-the-nation theme throughout his typical campaign speech that he delivers at least once a day. The pitch is short on policy. Instead, it’s almost entirely an ode to patriotism. He has built his entire campaign around the theme. His logo, his bus and the paperback version of his latest book are all tagged “Believe in America.”

It’s intended to help him appeal to voters who believe America is in decline — but who remain optimistic about their own futures in a country that’s always emphasized hard work as a way to get ahead. And by design or not, Romney’s pronouncements also are rife with suggestions that his opponents, particularly President Barack Obama, don’t share his appreciation of country.

“I will never apologize for America,” Romney says often — suggesting that Obama has done just that, even though the president hasn’t.

Romney also emphasizes what he calls his belief that America is exceptional — implying that his Democratic rival has a different view even though Obama has said that he sees the country as exceptional, too. All that plays to a belief in conservative circles that Obama has traveled the country making excuses for America’s involvement in foreign countries.

“We have a president who I don’t think understands the nature of America, the power of opportunity and freedom,” Romney told a crowd in Derry, N.H., last month. “I want to bring these things back to America so we have a brighter future for our kids.”

During an appearance in North Liberty, Iowa, Romney said: “The president said he wants to fundamentally transform America. . I kind of like America. I’m not looking for it to be fundamentally transformed into something else. I don’t want it to become like Europe.” It‘s a comment he’s repeatedly made.

It‘s no secret why he’s chosen this pitch.

Over the last decade, polls have regularly found that roughly half of all Americans — and in most cases way more than that — think the nation is going in the wrong direction. The exceptions occurred during George W. Bush‘s first term and during the first few months of Obama’s presidency.

In November, 54 percent of Americans said in an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll that the country’s recent rough patch is the start of a longer-term global decline where the U.S. is no longer the leading country in the world. Some 40 percent suggested it was temporary.

Despite the pessimism about America’s standing in the world, people have grown more optimistic than they have been in recent years that America itself is growing stronger. Only 37 percent said things would get better over the next five years when surveyed by NBC/Wall Street Journal in August 2010. That number jumped to 53 percent in January, coinciding with growth in the economy.

In some cases, Romney gets corny and he repeatedly combines the lines with a story about how his parents drove him across the country in the family Rambler to see America’s national parks.

“I love the founding documents,” the candidate says frequently before crowds as he quotes from the Declaration of Independence. “I love the Constitution!” is another Romney favorite. That includes, by the way, everything that’s been added to it. “I love all the amendments!” he said in September. “I love the Second Amendment. I love the 10th Amendment.”

The construction of some of Romney’s remarks rankle Democrats, who have continuously defended Obama from ongoing accusations that he is “other” or un-American.

“You can make an accusation about what you believe somebody wants to do, but that‘s very different than saying that someone doesn’t understand the nature of their country,” said Kiki McLean, a longtime Democratic strategist who has worked on several presidential campaigns. “So then the question comes: Are you insinuating something?”

Democrats have always been vulnerable to questions of their patriotism given their frequent anti-war stances and criticism of the status quo. But the spotlight has been even brighter on the first black president and one who has a foreign-sounding name.

Obama has faced repeated questions about his citizenship and right to be president, as well as his religion. His wife, first lady Michelle Obama, set off a conservative firestorm during the 2008 primary campaign when she said, “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country.”

Romney aides say his words are simply a reflection of the candidate‘s beliefs and aren’t disparaging of Democrats. And the former Massachusetts governor occasionally acknowledges that Democrats also care about the country.

“Good Democrats love America, too,” Romney said at a chilly outdoor rally in West Des Moines the day of the Iowa caucuses. And in August, Romney mentioned Obama and told NBC News, “I know he loves America.”

Even so, Romney has sought to use patriotic themes to appeal to Americans’ inherent belief in their country as he blames Obama for allowing the country to decline.

“These last three years,” Romney says often, “they are a detour, not our destiny.”

Romney is an unbearable candidate. The candidate that gave us socialized medicine. Enough said. And that is acceptable to you if you believe kicking your grandmother in the head is something that maybe ought to be shrugged at. Only if you have willingly lost your mind because of the obvious, crude, Soviet-style intimidation tactics being used around you. Turn on your consciences.

I’m not unimpressed with the field as a whole. Median IQ of the four of them must be fairly close to 140, and all of them except for Romney are obsessed with ideas. Newt would be a dream as President. Santorum is cool too, a little bizarre, but impressive. Paul is cooler, more bizarre, and both more and less impressive. Romney is the attempted destroyer of the GOP. He’s not even that pretty either. He looks like a fiend disguised as a fool. He thinks like…how does he think??

Get rid of the dopey-eyed sociopath! And Obama too. Vote Newt.

    Willard Romney is a joke.
He & his pathetic RNC warthogs
ripped the WHOLE, red, white & blue, “Believe in America” theme
off, of the Tea Party & Sarah Palin.
The trouble is..NOBODY believes it…when wooden Willard says it.

    He IS mechanical & robotic.
His whole spiel is taken from Tea Party enthusiasm,
the RNC has highlighted key buzzwords, from the Tea Party
& handed them to Willard, in hopes to make him, look like he’s one of us-
even though, he’s the phoniest conservative, alive.

Willard has NO warmth, he’s scripted & cold.
When WE or men, like Gingrich or Allen West,
talk about the HEART & SOUL of America, you hear it, from deep-down within.
JUST saying those words….stirs up incredible emotion.

When phony Willard says, “We want to save the soul of America”-
there is zero depth, he skates over the word “soul”, in some creepy, sterile way,
that is so shallow & quite frankly, liberally, unsettling.

    He is an odd goat-
perhaps, an attractive RNC poster boy
but no one, Grandma wants to serve her blue ribbon meatloaf to.
    Willard..as American, as apple pie…I don’t think so ?

Rove, Coulter & the RNC can shove their “Willard Pie”, in their own faces-
the American People AREN’T buying !

What you see, is what you get with Gingrich-
you hear it, in his voice & words.
When HE speaks about the soul & heart of America, the ground trembles.
Go with your Gut, America !

Romney is the same as we have been geeting all along:

Between January and September 2011, Mitt Romney’s Bain Capital gave Barack Obama $27,500!
So far this year, Bain Capital donated $123,200 to the Democratic National Committee. They also donated to a Romney super PAC; $1.25 million!

Romney’s companies have sent 25% of this year’s donations to the Democrats, while in 2008, 2/3 of their money went to Obama!

Romney‘s top contributor is Goldman Sachs who was Obama’s top contributor in 2007-2008:

“According to Federal Election Commission figures compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, Goldman Sachs’ political action committee and individual contributors who listed the company as their employer donated $994,795 during 2007 and 2008 to Obama’s presidential campaign.”
April 20, 2010 From Robert Yoon, CNN Political Research Director

Isn’t it funny how so many people who are tired of the same old thing, go for the same old thing election after election.

Why is it so hard for people to WAKE UP?

The reason we didn’t vote for decades is it was games and foolishness. We are here to get it done and we are dead serious. If the voting booth doesn’t work we will finally fall back on the second amendment. Thats when you fools don’t want to even think about what will happen. It won’t be a game or pretty. Agree,,,Wake up & Wise Up !

It’s ironic, that the Wall Street info is public knowledge,
but no one wants to publicly, acknowledge it.
The media gives it a pass,
Gingrich brings it up, tells the media to do their job
& gets “attacked”, for “attacking” Willard’s funding.

Give credit to Mark Levin, he is, as fearless, as Gingrich & mentions
      Romney’s Wall Street connections non-stop.

The American People have had enough-
Gingrich is right, they have the power to control this election, the way, THEY deem fit.
He puts faith in the outcome.

As for the others, who watch the negative sound bites,
      without question or research
      & jump on a bandwagon,
because a biased poll promotes their “winner”-
all you can ask them to do, is show a little self-respect,
by arming oneself with facts & knowledge, to make a responsible choice.

Stop being lazy, stop being shallow, stop being snookered & used-
MOST of all, STOP being COMPLACENT !

Get your act together, quit your belly achin’, quit your whining,
get off your duff & campaign for Newt.

Yes, Newt said, ‘This election will be won with People Power, not money power”,
but, it is STILL costly to run ANY formidable campaign.

If a million people sent him $5.00, he would have 5 million to combat
slick Willard & the RNC’s nasty, negative ads.

He is WISE, STRONG & FEARLESS…he’s JUST what America needs!

hahahaha .. typical bigoted post about Romney. I really do wonder if those Christians who support Newt only do so either 1) You really have no clue what is means to be a real Christian not a CINO, you know, like RINO or 2) You are just a plain bigot. Not sure, because Newt is a con artist. He knows your fears and your guilt, and plays on both of them simultaneously. OH yes, Newt first points out your fear, then, as his head inflates, he explains to you his simple answer that no person had ever thought of before. His proof that this unrelated Big Idea will work is his past record which he exaggerates on and takes credit for stuff he only played a small part in. He ignores the fact of the many instances he supported the wrong idea, or whipped the boys into supporting some historic notions such as NAFTA, or selling out our sovereignty to the UN and the WTO. He fails to explain why he is guilty of EVERY single act he accused others of, I mean this is narcissistic. He charged the minority leader of bad ethics, while doing the same himself. He also pushes legislation attacking fellow congressmen over bounced checks, while having bounce over 50 himself, and accusing Clinton of being an adulterer while being an adulterer himself. I mean, this is not hypocritical, but this is WEIRD. Why does Newt do that ? Who attacks others while being guilty themselves ? and why ?? Honestly, I am wasting my time even writing this, I know who you people are, I know what your about, I like ya, but …

I think that Romney is the final Republican presidential candidate to go up and defat Obama in November because of all of his monetary backing that can’t be challenged by anyone else in the race.

And beleagured businesses suffering from Obama’s wrong-headed economic policies will see there is light at the end of the tunnel and they will be ramping up (read: employing) their capabilities so that when Romney and his pro-business policies are put into place, they will be positionhed to reap the profits.

Call it the Romney effect or whatever. But it will be showing up and the good news won‘t be due to Obama’s policies that would fail if this weren’t an election year. It will be in anticipation opf Romney’s pro-growth policies for all of America. Create jobs that give us more taxpayers and a lot fewer food stamp recepients.

It takes more than just money to win an election, Mitt just doesn’t have the right ideas. I know Newt isn’t perfect, but when was the last time things were going correct when Newt wasn’t with his fingers in government? Theere were a few blips, sure, but moving us in the right direction happened most when he was in office. If you want to think of Newt as Progressive, quit looking at the little snippets of his speeches and listen to the whole speech, you will see there is a difference, context in a snippet is not the whole story, and his voting record, which is what really matters, shows him to be one of the most Conservative, and if you continue to believe the snippets, well, Saul did his job and Mitt will replace BHO without even a bump in the road to the abyss. Nobody is owed the Presidency and Mitt thinks he is next in line. We really need a Conservative in office, and of the candidates I would like to see the ticket Newt/Santorum.

You can always tell who the better candidate is by what they report. When the media starts bashing someone and saying they are down and out, that’s the one they fear. I want the candidate the media fears, not the one they keep telling us is the only electable candidate that can beat BHO. Santorum needs some training, vice president would be a good training ground for him.

LAS VEGAS—Mitt Romney’s stump speech, absent a tweak here and there at the top of his remarks, is virtually the same everyday, right down to the closing meditation on his unwavering love for the nation’s patriotic hymns.
“I love the hymns,” Romney has said at virtually every campaign stop throughout the early primary states. “‘America the Beautiful’ is one of my favorites. ‘Oh beautiful, for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain’ … There’s another verse I love: ‘Oh beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife, who more than self their country loved and mercy more than strife.’”
The pack of reporters who follow him on the campaign trail know Romney’s speech almost as well as the candidate himself does. His riff on the hymns is often the signal to start packing up our gear in order to observe Romney in a rare unscripted moment: a meet-and-greet with voters along a rope line.
Yet as Romney seems to go out of his way to play it safe–and even bland–he has often been joined on the trail by a supporter with a more electrifying presence…

Romney speaks true conservative patriotism with a foreign accent because it’s not what is truly in his heart. He doesn‘t speak from the heart because he can’t, he doesn‘t want to say something to let on to those supporting him that he’s been lying since 5 years ago when he started running to the right to try and get into office.

Romney likes America just fine as it is now. He doesn’t want things to change back to the way America was meant to be. He doesn’t want to rewind to freedom and American pride. He wants to carefully turn things back to the early 00′s and press pause. He’s fine with the lawyer run and loophole driven mess America has become because it is this mess that allowed him to become “successful” in the first place.

Romney may have slightly more pride in the country than Obama but in reality he has pride in many of the same things. Health insurance for all instead of trying to lower health care costs so insurance isn’t such a big deal. He’ll be signing green energy subsidies as well as oil subsidies just like Bush Jr. did. McCain got a reputation as more of GW Bush. The truth is that McCain was worse. Romney would be slightly better than McCain but slightly better than that disgrace to his younger self is far from good enough.

Elect this man and he will lose the general election I guarantee you. If however some small miracle occurs and he manages to eek out a victory against Obama, We’ll still be just as screwed, only a littl

We have a committed conservative base that is not only at war with liberal progressives, but also at war with the leaders of the GOP. The cantidate has to really hit Obama hard, or he’s gonna lose his base, or at least rob them of motivation.

He’s gonna have to talk..AND WALK like a true conservative.

My fear is that Romney…afraid of being labelled a racist, or offending blacks, or offending moderates, or offending independents, or offending conservative democrats, will play nice with Obama. Insisting that now that the primaries are over he is going to run a respectful, moderate, and thoughtful campaign, will get his milquetoast butt kicked by a guy who takes no prisoners. Just like McCain, clueless about what his base is hungry for.

And for all of the weak kneed Independents who get uncomfortable with going negative, Obama is where he is because he did, so get over it!

I sincerely hope this candy a$$ realizes he is going to make or break the republican party – maybe forever.

Really, I simply do not understand his modus operandi – at least yet. Maybe there’s a method to his madness, but he pretty much told me what he was about when he didn’t have the stones to admit Obama was a socialist. The least he could have done was corrected the talking head by saying Obama wasn’t really a socialist – more a Marxist. I do not understand why people have such a hard time talking about Marxism. It’s been around for a long time, and it is a fact of life. Why run and hide from it?

So, I worry about Romney – not is intellect, but his judgment and his leadership potential. Does he have it in him to call the ball and get people to change the way they were living their lives like Reagan did? If not, he’s essentially worthless to the conservative movement. Time will tell.

He’s been totally handled by his staff and, clearly, they are a bunch of marshmallows. Well, if Romney wins, they’re going to be put on a skewer and roasted over an open fire!
The Republican Party has obviously been castrated by the PC Police and they can’t get past the fact that they are going to have to fight fire with fire. That means, Alinsky against Alinsky. Doesn‘t matter if it’s Romney, Gringrich, Santorum, Paul, or someone else. The gloves have to come off and the message needs to be that the sovereignty of our nation hangs in the balance. PERIOD!

The Republican party is not the only thing hanging in the balance. Our responsibility to future generations to keep a free world alive is at stake in this election. The sad thing is if we choose wrong in the primary (Romney in other words) the general election really won’t matter.

To all the Newt Supporters with there heads still shoved solidly up there rear ends,

Newt Gingrich has an affair and divorces his first wive dying of cancer.

Cost: No body knows. (Everyone makes at least one big mistake in there life right?)

Newt Gingrich has an affair and divorces his second wive after she is diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis

Cost: At least some off the 1.6 million from Freddie Mac and all the other money he made influence peddling in DC.

Chances that when Newts sorry campaign comes to an end that he will pull a Edwards and has not only another affair but a love child. (Which is highly likely given the record so far)

Cost: TBA but he still has his millions from the lobbyist to cover it.

LOL bet you were expecting a priceless line up there…. see below.

The fact that Mitt Romney married his high school sweet heart and has not only never cheated on her but stuck by her side despite her diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis ( cough… Newts second wife cough cough ).

    Now that is PRICELESS!!!!!

“Newt Gingrich has an affair and divorces his first wive dying of cancer.”

Newt’s first wife is alive today. They had filed for a divorce by mutual consent. The day the papers were to be served, she was in the hospital. She would have been quite upset with Newt if he had done anything to stop the papers from being served.

If you’re going to try to make a case, please try to be factual.

You arguing the the first divorce proves my point I agree she is still alive. His first affair/divorce is a freeby I did say that everyone makes at least one big mistake in the life. Newt throws his wives away like bad fruit when he is done with them. How a man treats his wive tells you a lot about how a man will act when given great power.

      Character matters

I’m an idea guy. A good plan gets my juices flowing. But I recognize the truth, that you need more than ideas to win elections. I also recognize the political strategy of not showing your cards early.

My problem is, I just can’t get excited about Romney. Just. Can’t. Do. It. I know that anything is better than Obama, and I think if he gets another 4 it will be an unmitigated disaster for our country. Even with all that. I’m just not pumped up about Romney. What scares me is that despite the mess this president has made, his supporters ARE, pumped up about him.

acedemia. I have watched every single debate. Can you provide details? I know he has a 100+ point plan (an absurd number) but they are tiny washington-insider type things that nobody cares about. My point about obama bashing is that he is COVERING HIS OWN WEAKNESS. He running in the primary, should tell us why he is better than newt, rick, and ron. I have heard many ideas come from the other three guys.

      @soybomb315

He laid out his 59 point plan back in September, and has mentioned it almost every chance he gets, including during the debates. When you are giving stump speeches, you don’t delve into every little detail of your plans. Once you have had a chance to look over his plan, you will understand better his campaign’s focus on patriotism. Here’s the link:

      http://mittromney.com/blogs/mitts-view/2011/09/believe-america-mitt-romneys-plan-jobs-and-economic-growth

Not only that, all you have to do is look at the guy’s accomplishments in life thus far to get an idea of how good he is at turning things around. He is not called “Turnaround Mitt” for nothing. Look at his turnaround record in the private sector, his term as Governor of a very liberal state, president of the Olympics, and even as recently as the turnaround in the Florida primaries. The guy knows what he is doing. He doesn’t cheat on his wife, and there is no dirt on him at all. Believe it or not, the establishment does not really want him. He is not like them, being such a straight-shooter. He has not been corrupted by the powers that be. All that he owns, he has earned himself lawfully and honestly. He is an example of economic security and American capitalism at it’s finest. Give him a chance.

Marvel. I appreciate your enthusiasm. I supported mitt 4 years ago but i feel like we need a more ‘conservative’ person. I appreciate his business background and i have heard him say he wants to run the government better and smarter. However, i do not believe the government is a business – I believe the government is a raquet. I am afraid if the government became more efficient it will be able to do more things – which means it will do interfere in the economy and trample on more of our rights. These are philosophical differences brought about because of events over the last 4 years. I would prefer mitt over newt tho

Though I disagree with you about Romney, in that I think he is a true conservative, I am glad to hear that you would prefer Mitt over Newt.

Here is a recent Washington Post article that I saw today that I think is good news, if it is accurate. I was already under the impression that Ron Paul and Mitt Romney were personal friends, even though they differed on some things. Check this out:

Let’s see if I have this right. Bishop Romney (google it) received 5 years of deferments during the Vietnam War. Also he has five sons who have decided that they don’t need to serve their country. So as a Vietnam Veteran I find all this a bit disingenuous. Check out this funny video on Mitt’s flip flops http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WdkEc4mZF0&feature=player_embedded

So if you haven’t served in the military or come from a family whose members have served that makes you an illigitimate patriot? We would not be the country we are without our military. No one questions this proud declaration. But would we be the country we are without the economic leadership of entrepreneurs and business leaders such as Romney? Sure they haven’t exposed themselves to bullets and bombs per se, but they have risked their time, talents, and their own wealth and often exprience great losses in an effort to achieve their wins. The result of a strong military is a country free and safe in which to do business, accomplish progress and increase the standard of living for all of its citizens. The result of a strong private sector is a Government with the means to support and create the strongest military in the world.
