Is GM Really Going to Go Bankrupt Again?

Louis Woodhill at Forbes seems to think so:
President Obama is proud of his bailout of General Motors. That’s good, because, if he wins a second term, he is probably going to have to bail GM out again. The company is once again losing market share, and it seems unable to develop products that are truly competitive in the U.S. market.
He’s right about the president being awfully proud of “rescuing” GM. Remember this from last week?
And on Monday when GM’s stock fell 0.3 percent to $20.47 a share, TheBlaze noted the following:
Considering that the feds still hold 500 million shares of GM stock, they’d have to find a way to offload them for about $53 apiece to recover the $49.5 billion spent in bailing out the troubled automaker. But if the stock continues to stay where it is, this means that the feds will end up posting a loss of more than $16 billion on bailing out GM.
Because of this dive in stock price, the Treasury Department was forced to revise its projected bailout losses upwards to $25.1 billion from $21.7 billion — an increase of 15 percent.
“It’s doubtful that the Obama administration would attempt to sell off the government’s massive position in GM while the stock price is falling. It would be too embarrassing politically. Accordingly, if GM shares continue to decline, it is likely that Obama would ride the stock down to zero,” Woodhill writes.
“GM is unlikely to hit the wall before the election, but, given current trends, the company could easily do so again before the end of a second Obama term,” he adds.
He provides some additional perspective:
In the 1960s, GM averaged a 48.3% share of the U.S. car and truck market. For the first 7 months of 2012, their market share was 18.0%, down from 20.0% for the same period in 2011. With a loss of market share comes a loss of relative cost-competitiveness. There is only so much market share that GM can lose before it would no longer have the resources to attempt to recover.
So, is this what being “rescued” looks like?
Final Thought: Hot Air’s Erica Johnson reminds us of the following quote:
If General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for on Tuesday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye. It won’t go overnight, but its demise will be virtually guaranteed.
[…]
Without that bailout, Detroit will need to drastically restructure itself. With it, the automakers will stay the course — the suicidal course of declining market shares, insurmountable labor and retiree burdens, technology atrophy, product inferiority and never-ending job losses. Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check. …
The American auto industry is vital to our national interest as an employer and as a hub for manufacturing. A managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs. It would permit the companies to shed excess labor, pension and real estate costs.
You know who said that? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said that. If Woodill is proven correct and GM continues its steady decline in value, how much do you think this will affect the Romney and Obama campaigns?

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 10:17pmI’m 54. Today I went to my local Chrysler dealer snooping around. A salesman came out and stopped me and told me what great deals he had for me. I simply said that I was looking for a 2 door automobile. He sez he has Challengers, I mentioned that I was driving an Aurora, and that I liked the performance and ride quality, but was all done with 4 door cars. He sez, I have here a turbocharged Dart, with a stick shift and a tiny engine, looked to me like a Yugo with an eating disorder. At this point, I said to myself, he must be deaf, My Aurora has a 32 valve v8, has a decent ride, and would like to see a 2 door car, that is comparable, I tell him my previous car was a Riviera, does that give him an idea what I like. He sez, he has a great rebate on a pickup truck. I said I have a pickup truck, but I am selling my Aurora, and am looking for a car. He sez, you sure are a tough customer???!!! I said, if manufacturers built a car that a babyboomer would enjoy driving, I’d buy it, I felt like I was in Hitlers Germany, and was being shown Volkswagen beetles. We parted with a wary distrust of one another. I may end up with an Eclipse, it will be the first non American engineered vehicle I’ve ever purchased, it saddens me.

Would student learning to create a new or grow or improve a business knowingly make the task tougher with more and more regulations? When students learn to be self sufficient in school they will elect people to represent them that know how to be self sufficient.
Repeal the 17th amendment, send a few more lobbyist home. Keep some of our representation from trading their votes for campaign donations.
Get on our representations butt over creating regulations to protect a big campaign downer’s business from competition. Teach business in school so the student will understand the impact of regulations on business, the number of government employees it takes per page of government regulation. Show the correlation between government regulations and the public’s wallet. We the people pay for every regulation… no one else.

Baine comes in and invests money into Corporations like this and then tries to get the company to to make money; investing Banes money! Or let the President step in knowing full well we can’t compete with othe Auto makers. Why, because Labor cost is two to three times that of Non Union! And they cant seem to figure this out or get out of Debt? So let Baine invest its own money; or throw Tax Payers money on a Flaming Fire so the F-ing Unions can make more money and give more to the Democrats? What would we do? Let the Unions Fall in Bankruptcy, then let Baine step in and invest its Own Investers money to Salvage it! P.S. Does anyone remember Money getting sent overseas for Investments? Was that GM? Romney/Ryan plaese step forward and let the People know about this! Those Gm Union Workers will lose money and some may be layed off; but on the Other hand, It would be back up and running and people could get their jobs back! Yes, they’ll lose money! But on the other hand if we dont, lets just say it’ll be like the post office, amtrack, like all the other Govt. programs we keep bailing out! Over and over and over and over!…. You get it!

Posted on August 17, 2012 at 3:11amI don’t believe in using taxpayer money to bailout any private business. However, I’m more “okay” with bailing out an automobile corp rather than a bunch of “chosen people” run banks. Banks don’t make anything, they are just like leaches. At least automobile plants produce a tangible product, not just some sheets of paper with numbers on it. Don’t buy a Toyota, their quality has gone down hill over the last few years and they raised their prices a while back as a favor to the American automobile manufacturers to be less competitive. They really said that. They thought their cars were too cheaply priced and raised the prices. Look at buying a Ford. Ford is a solid company that makes dependable products.

Posted on August 17, 2012 at 8:22amI don‘t think at all that the problem with GM’s balance books is that they don’t have good products or products that people want. They’re inability to sell products is totally predicated on them being bailed out by the government and that only the union demands were satisfied rather than going through bankruptcy and starting over. I know many people that have purchased Ford‘s based entirely on the premise that GM’s shareholders got screwed in the deal. Many retirement plans had GM stock in them, including union pension plans and they all lost their ass when GM stock went to zero. It will be a cold day in hell before I or any of my family purchases a GM product, including a used car.

Posted on August 17, 2012 at 10:18amI am a long time lover of GM SUV’s/Trucks. Since as a taxpayer I own so much of GM, and the government has directed what the company is to build, I cannot find a way to purchase a GM product. For the first time in several years, I decided to buy a Ford. Why you may ask? Ford did not require or need to be bailed out. Ford took it among themselves to renegotiate with the Unions and restructure their designs and styles. Ford actually practiced good business practices to grow for the future. GM and Chrysler did not look to their future, and look at what happened. I personally do not mind how much a person makes, but do know that Unions take advantage of labor and fight for the people that maybe do not produce. In my opinion, Unions are a corporation within a corporation. They (Unions Leadership) get paid to negotiate contracts. An individual could pay a lawyer to do the same thing at a much cheaper price. But Unions do something else, they manipulate politics not for the members, but for themselves. Do you really think that the Presidents of Unions really care about their members? All they care about is their pay and their benefits and their lives. GM and Chrysler allowed themselves to be manipulated by the unions and Ford was able to manipulate the Unions so that Ford could stay in business. The UAW will not exist if they continue to take from the manufacture, that is why so many companies move overseas to stay in business.

Avoid Toyota at all costs. They do not honor their warranties and their new cars are junk. I had a Corolla that I bought brand new, got every oil change done on time or early, and at 32000 miles, it burned a quart of oil/week. Toyota said this is normal NORMAL!?!?!? The oil consumption got worse until, at 55000 miles, it ran dry in about 2 days, destroying the engine. Now, Toyota would not fix the oil consumption problem, and when the engine died, they put it on me and wanted to charge me $2000 just to diagnose the problem. I will never buy any of their pieces of crap again.

And we question why GM’s losing money and needs another bail out? This is exactly how Romney made his money! Baine didn’t make it bu just going in and selling everything! They went in with Intelligent people, Spent Baine money and after years of Negative Numbers would then end up selling and piecing it out! They did not go in & say I’m going to liquidate everything! Thats why Baine has an 80% success rate with bringing companies out of Debt and making the company valuable! If that meant Kicking the union a-ses out. So be it! Lets ask the question like this. If GM goes Bankrupt and can not get out of Debt. Would those employees not lose Most of their pensions anyway? Maybe all of it? The Unions are a burden, but if Baine comes in & Invests money, gets rid of the Unions and pays pensions out like 30 cents on a dollar. And is also able to make a stronger and better company is that not better than letting Gm Close its doors? What gets me is these unions/union’s heads make millions! Posted on August 17, 2012 at 8:20pmI’m so tired of hearing about how Ford (found on road dead!) is the only company that didn’t take a bail out. BS! They had their “bailout” a few years back, you know – before anyone knew Obama existed and before it was called a bailout!
Report Post »We have only Chrysler products. Husband works for the company, builds wonderful Dodge Ram trucks in Detroit. There’s nothing quite like hearing our 5 year old get excited every time he sees a Ram and yell “my daddy built that truck!”
In the past, before I was married, I had a Ford (POS), a GM/Chevy (really good car that lasted for 18 yrs) and a Hyundai that died before it was a year old. Chevy doesn’t make anything like they used to, I wouldn’t take a free Ford product, I’ll stick with our Chryslers. Both of ours at least 10 yrs old, paid off now and still run quite nicely with normal up-keep. I can’t complain about them at all and being that we drive a mini-van to suit our kids, there’s really no other choice unless we want to buy foreign. Hell no, we’re not buying foreign!

Posted on August 17, 2012 at 8:36pmWith the “help” of Obama GM has managed to build a lot of new designs that nobody wants. What Obama did to bond holders, which was mainly retirement pension funds, by screwing all the debt holders and giving his buddies, the unions a free pass.
If GM had of gone through a normal bankruptcy GM would have reorganized and been way ahead. Instead we’re talking about another bankruptcy.

Posted on August 18, 2012 at 3:34pmJust bought my second Hyundai, I was a GM man through and through growing up, after they and CHrysler took corporate welfare, my next choice was Ford, my employer has Ford fleet vehicles, Fusions, they have had many problems with chinese wheel studs breaking off, ford trucks on the other hand are pretty bullet proof. I already had a Ford pickup and was looking for a car. I traded in my 06 Sonata for a 12 elantra 4 dour touring, it gets 36 hwy and 29 city, has great standard equipment, sattelite radio, power everything, except seats, it rides like a caddy and the steering is as tight as a beemer, the warranty is 10yr/100,000 miles on everything except struts, tires, brakepads and mufflers, 5 year roadside assistance free and none of the reimbursment crap, they pay with credit card. All that for 17,000. I drove a Nissan Versa on a recent business trip, same year, the trim was falling off, the car rattled with every bump and the thing rode like a go cart. The car is made in South Korea, they build a lot here too.

Posted on August 16, 2012 at 10:13pmThe government could go a long way in making GM profitable by lifting a lot of those EPA restrictions and mandatory auto-emissions standards that they have to meet in the next few years. Cars are overpriced and the only way to make them affordable again is to get the government out of the auto business. I’m not advocating that they start producing smog producers, I‘m advocating that they allow the manufacturers react to their customer’s needs and not the EPAs.

Posted on August 17, 2012 at 9:29amGM could have become profitable if they had gone through a structured bankruptcy like any other large company that fails. Union contracts would have been renegotiated, which is the main thing dragging them down. Not for churches/temples/private companies like GM or for having children or not having children or for being married or not being married. NONE. (1) Research a politician’s record.
(2) Write about that record, as it ties into a particular story.
(3) (Optional) One BWS trademark is not only CRUSHING lies… but EXPLAINING TO THE OTHER READERS what techniques are being used and why. Example:
ALINSKYITE SMEARING:
“Nurture a sadistic and unholy man crush”
ALINSKYITE SMEARING OBJECTIVE:
This line of propaganda (Alinsky Rule #5 and #12) is designed to position the target as offering slanted information stemming from hidden homosexual desire. By wrestling conversation to personal insults, the Alinskyite has safely dodged the IRREFUTABLE original comment.
ALINSKYITE SMEARING:
“Learn to hate everything else”
ALINSKYITE SMEARING OBJECTIVE:
Similar to the first, only “anger” is used. “Hate” is a leftist’s word used to chill truth, by describing the target as potentially DANGEROUS or CRIMINAL.
ALINSKYITE NAME-CALLING:
“Stop taking the anti-psychotic medication”
ALINSKYITE NAME-CALLING OBJECTIVE:
Typical name-calling will include a variety of “off your meds” “tinfoil hat” “momma’s basement” and/or “pot smoker.”
TYPO STALKING:
Report Post »“Type in ALL CAPS”
TYPO STALKING OBJECTIVE:
A democrat staple. Democrats will criticize typos, grammar, style, CAPS, etc… another way to REDIRECT the conversation AWAY from uncomfortable truths.

You fool do you constantly spout grade school arguments against Paul without ever researching the other sides perspective. These old idiotic arguments have all been answered time and time again.
1. Paul adds pork to bills to try to get some of his constituents money back into their district (which the Neo Con/Prog federal Govt stole). Paul knowing the bill will be passed adds the pork for his district (congress’ job you idiot) and votes no because the bill its self is unconstitutional. The politicians you support force Paul to legislate this way.
2. Paul often voting No and not getting many bills passed should be a major reason to support Paul. The Progressive Republicans/Dems vote no on constitutional restraints on the Govt, no surprise you Romney morons support more unconstitutional legislation from the current congress (bail outs, QE, NDAA). You Romney folk support the current political establishment and their unconstitutional regulations, so its no surprise you hold such hatred for the one man in DC who refuses to sell out and “go along to get along” like that cowardly dweeb Santorum.
Report Post »Some one said the congress already had the ability to audit the fed which is wrong they have a select audit ability in which the major transactions are blacked out of the audit. So congress’ “audit” is actually toothless. Paul wants to add teeth.

Posted on August 17, 2012 at 7:25pmAlso I find it funny the best arguments you idiot Neo Cons can come up with against Paul are news letter from decades ago he didnt write, getting money back to his district and not supporting the political establishment as they destroy our Constitution . Ha the reasons you pose as discrediting Paul actually make a Constitutionalist proud of him (not going along to get along).
Take note those who attack Paul never do so by attacking his beliefs but rather attack his supporters or his age. Paul supporters simply point out Romneys record to you progressive rinos and we get called all sorts of names. You cant counter with unconstitutional legislation by Paul so you resort to name calling. The Reasons you do pose for not supporting Paul are not based on his beliefs but trivial matters like him voting No all the time and not having success in passing legislation in the congress full of progressives you idiotic neo cons support.

Please try to find one and support them if you are in the market for a GM car or service. It isn’t us in the shops that are the problem. Posted on August 17, 2012 at 10:21amThe GM product isn’t that amazing and has gone down severely in quality over the last several years. Example, a few years back I used to unload these large black crates at the Riverton dealership in my town. When I asked the service manager what these were he said they were for the transmissions that needed to be sent back, or new transmissions coming in. Ever since that has been GM’s main downfall in quality for their vehicles that and having too many brands with uninteresting models helped cause their financial breakdown, along with the union contracts.
Report Post »Ford is not exempt from making poor quality products. They should have let International keep making their diesels and stuck it out with the 7.3. Instead they have given a line of piss poor engines under their own design.
Yes GM did drop the ball on the Camaro redesign, just like they dropped it on the GTO. The GTO looked like a Euro-trash car and they dawdled on the Camaro. Great the Camaro is in Transformers, but you still waited 2 years to release it after the movie. Granted the Camaro is a pretty swank looking car it has to compete with the well established Mustang which just get more bad ass with every year.
I think if GM could focus on making better strives in quality, cutting union contracts and learning where to invest their money(our money) properly they would be better off.
