Is Heaven for real?

Human beings have been discussing and debating this question since the beginning of time.  In the modern era, this spirited and often contentious dialogue continues to evolve.  Earlier this year, the release of a book entitled, “Heaven is For Real” captured the story of 12-year-old Colton Burpo — a boy who claims he visited Heaven during a near-death experience back in 2003. And now, that boy is taking on famed physicist Stephen Hawking’s claim that there is no heaven.

First, let‘s look briefly examine Colton’s claims.  While in Heaven, the young boy says he saw Jesus and came in contact with relatives who had passed away before he was born.  Perhaps the most captivating revelation stemming from Colton’s alleged visit his insistence that he had met a sister his parents never told him about.  According to MSNBC:

…the real shocker came when Colton told his mother, “Mommy, I have two sisters.” Sonja told her son that he had to be referring to his oldest sister, Cassie, and his cousin Traci, but he responded: “No — I have two sisters. You had a baby die in your tummy, didn’t you?”

While Colton and millions of other Americans (more than 70 percent) believe wholeheartedly in Heaven’s existence, others like Hawking, couldn’t disagree more.  Recently, Hawking likened the human brain to a “computer” and was quoted as saying:

“There is no Heaven or afterlife for broken-down computers.  That is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”

In 2010, when asked by Diane Sawyer if science and religion could be reconciled, Hawking claimed:

“There is a fundamental difference between religion, which is based on authority, [and] science, which is based on observation and reason. Science will win because it works.”

But, while Hawking sees religion as being rooted in “authority,” others believe that faith is much deeper than that.  And, in Colton’s case, his take on Heaven stems from experience and, thus, if it’s true — “observation and reason.”  Yesterday, ABC News aired an interview in which Colton countered Hawking’s views on the afterlife:

      No, God doesn’t, but each individual is responsible for the personal decision he makes for his soul. I pray for the unsaved all the time. I have seen many come to Christ because of those prayers. This is no different. But, some people harden their hearts and God (Holy Spirit) cannot get through and then the devil take over. Yes, it is very sad, so I will pray for him, but spend most of my time on those who actually WANT TO HEAR THE TRUTH. Even Christ told us to ‘shake the dust of your feet’ (”And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.” Matthew 10:14).       yeah.. it’s crazy…
      they have ‘faith’ that there are multiple dimensions, black holes that are could be wormholes, that everything in this universe started from hydrogen and helium in 1 single explosion… some how all the other elements magically showed up from those 2 elements… , and many more theories, such as gravity which can’t be proven or explained without faith. But, they can’t have faith that a higher power started the whole process in which we exist… even though they, themselves, start the process of life daily in labs by creating test environments without explosions… there is always a bigger fish.. ;)

      Too bad that religious people are blind to the truth, which is that religion is a big BUSINESS in which people take advantage of people wanting to believe for financial gain. Also, religious people are good ONLY for selfish reasons (not because they simply ARE good)… they are good so that that will get some reward (Heaven) or to avoid punishment (Hell). VERY selfish motivations. an Atheist is more genuine ANY DAY.

      Actually this is for Tina Land… If you are an atheist, you are a relativist. You need to have a moral lawgiver in order to have absolute truth or good. Since you do not believe in God, you have no measure by which to say what is “good or bad” or “true or false.” Everything to you is relative as to what your own mind perceives it to be… based on nothing other than your feelings, which can change. How can you and other relativists ever agree on what is good, bad or true for that matter? You can’t even get the argument off the ground. Everything you say when referring to these kinds of discussions commits verbal suicide… Christians are not trying to be good just to get to heaven… it is Christ Himself, God living in us that convicts us of sin and makes us aware of our helplessness.

    what is more important and is something that noone can deny is the existence and experience of good and evil down here on earth. So people should be taking care of clarifying and pursuing the good part instead of wasting the short life time (God given or celular provided what ever origin you prefer) in pointless discussions. it is here, now and up to every and each of us to live heavenly inspired or infernaly inspired.

    On this issue, I would definitely trust Colton Burpo before I would trust Stephen Hawking. Mr. Hawking should rethink his beliefs before it is too late – our time on Earth is limited but eternity is, well, eternal!

    Much of “Science” is man‘s interpretation of God’s creation.

    Just because we Science has tried to explain away the very existence of God, doesn’t mean it is true.

    It is sad that someone like Hawking who apparently has been blessed with a mind full of theory can attempt to deny the existence of God.

    One of my favorite sayings as a believer: “It’s our job to catch the fish. It‘s God’s job to clean them.” We can’t change Mr. Hawking & that’s not our job. Everyday when I read the headlines on The Blaze, panic and scream in total frustration at the deliberate destruction of our dollar and nation, I remind myself of Colton’s story. I reach for either my devotional or the Bible and pray for His return — sooner rather than later.

    The idea that science and religion are at odds with each other is simply wrong. Hawking should be mindful of the great early astronomers and mathematicians that came before him and had a belief in God.
    Many of the achievements can be credited to men of faith in the field of all sciences, Need details? Do some searching on the topic. Sufficent information is out there to support this posting.

      Those people didn’t let the Bible get in the way of where the evidence took them in their quest to understand the Universe. The same can not be said of groups like the Institute of Creation Research or AIG.

      Imagine the joy Mr. Hawking will experience when he learns that God does indeed exist and that his Father in Heaven has not forgotten him for a moment. Stephen’s witness may not come till his final days on earth, but I’m confident that it will come.

    I love S. Hawkins, but his arrogance in believing man is smarter than God is unfortunate. God’s creation and creation of life, and how it all began is still a mystery. I will give Hawkins what he deserves in some areas…but like what was revealed earlier on The Blaze…if Heaven does not exist then prove it. Because how life started and what happens after death is still a mystery to those who do not believe in God. Steven should stick to Black Holes.

      The Colton kid was 4 years old when he had his experience. I am hard pressed to remember much of anything at that age. He brought back knowledge that he could not have otherwise had, the existence of an unborn sister. He did not bring back knowledge of what he was told or taught.

      @roth….modern science has never claimed that the earth was flat or that the cosmos went around the earth, those were ideas propagated by the CHURCH!!! Modern science grew out of questions to these unfounded ideas, Galileo, Copernicus etc. As for cows and leeches, scientists have never unequivocally stated, nor would they, that cow methane is solely responsible for polar ice cap melting, or that leeches cure all disease. Educate your feeble mind before you spew bull everywhere, it makes you look even more stupid than believing in completely unfounded dogma.

You cannot blame God for choosing to speed 110 MPH and crashing anymore than you can blame him for Obama becoming President. But with every choice not of God we personally make, there are consequences. Why do people blame God for every little thing bad that happens? God stepped out of the picture for mankind when He gave all power to His son, Jesus, at His death on the cross (Jesus took the keys to heaven and hell). That is why Jesus is the ONLY way to God (read your Bible – it’s in there). I KNOW God is very sad that some of mankind has turned from Him and He will NEVER give up on them until this age is finished or you die, whichever comes first. So, until you KNOW what you are talking about, backed up by FACT, then stop trying to make people believe God is at fault.       I think we both know thats a facetious question so I don’t think we need to go into it, but I do have a question of my own. Do you think he would be the man he is if he hadn’t had ALS? We are shaped by our choices in how we take life. He has capabilities to do and think of so many amazing things. Would he have had the same focus or drive if he had been born without his disease? I do not believe that disease and suffering are things put on us by a distant or cruel God. It is in the midst of tragedy and pain that we become truly human and grow.

      I really feel bad for Hawking. The physical issues are enough, but he’s gone down the road to making himself his own god, like a lot of folks. Just imagine if he could open up to God for just a bit, where that mind and time thinking could be used for prayer.

      Dusty- We can’t KNOW what waits for Mr Hawking. All we can do is pray for him and our Lord will handle any judgement required at the time, it is not for us to judge or condemn him. That takes place at a higher paygrade then ours.

      In a form that could only be described as a broken computer, Hawking has got to believe that if there was a God he would not have allowed his (Hawking’s) body to become what it has become. It doesn’t matter how educated one is, being pissed off at God for the hand that has been dealt is a basic emotional knee-jerk reaction. Denying the exist of Heaven and God is a poke in the eye from a “brilliant scientist”.

      The kid has it right, Hawking can believe what he believes and the kid can believe what he believes. None of us will see which one is right in this realm. The next realm, “Aye, there’s the rub”.

      My Faith tells me there is a Heaven. My religion tells me how to get there. Can I prove that Heaven exists? No. But Faith is believing in what I can’t prove and when my time comes I will face my Maker and know for sure. But in the mean time I try to live a good life and be a good Christian and that in itself is reward enough for me.

      But I’m sure you can explain where God came from, or what was before Him.

      “The Book” states that “In the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth”. Before the beginning, let’s call it the “Big Bang”, there was God. Think of him as an infinite source of energy, a Super Black Hole.

      In the beginning an existence that was pure energy created matter. The world, the universe, and things that we cannot even imagine came to be. We try to explain the unexplainable with our limited view and limited knowledge. The difference between “Believers” and “Non-believers” is that non-believers have nothing to stand on when we reach the limits of our vision. Believers have a faith that sees beyond the limits of the view — we just can’t see or describe it.

      . Your right you are not the smartest man in the world. Michio Kaku does pretty well with the Theories. He says they will find the answer of how things began, but he also mentioned they still won’t know how the process got the things to start it. I‘m sure you don’t know either.
      Michio mentioned about time like you, however he also mentioned that tremendous force is needed to create a ‘worm’ hole to break into it. Just maybe, that power is manifested when people die, and the spirit is released from the body. Zap…Some may go to our idea of heaven and other to hell at that time.

      I don’t think it matters what WE believe in this way. NO ONE has been able to squash or refute the Holy Bible. Therefore, the words in it are true. Therefore, it is only the words of God/Jesus that matter. It is the ONLY book in the world that man has not been able to destroy. Think about that. To me, that is supernatural and not scientific. If Hawking ever saw what I have seen, he would probably find some scientific explanation (excuse) for it. It is his delusional excuse for not following God’s will for his life. That is his choice, sadly. God does not force man to do anything he doesn’t want to do. I KNOW Mr. Hawking would say I was delusion for seeing those 2 GIANT ANGELS that carried my car home when it broke down one morning years ago and then finding out I had no belts under the hood (they broke). I am sure he would say that God does not heal, when I was healed of a stroke instantly in E.R. and all the attending Physicians just stared at the medical devices hooked up to me, with an expression of awe on their faces (seeing is believing). I am sure he will find an excuse for many things I have witnessed to the hand of God in my life. I serve a very powerful God. When God makes His appearance in one way or another in Mr. Hawking’s sad life, I am positive he will give God the credit. That will depend on Mr. Hawking’s CHARACTER and whether or not he is really an honest man. Hawking will be responsible to God for drawing people away from the truth.

      Heaven is real, God lives. God is active in our lives and in the lives of all men. Man’s understanding of the workings of the natural world is imperfect and Scientific theories come and goes with every passing day. God is unchanging and eternal and millions of people know it.

      If you are wrong about your belief, there are many things you have lost, one being a lifetime wasted on believing something that is false. If you don’t care about believing falsehoods, I guess then you haven’t lost anything. But surely you will have wasted time on prayers that had no effect when you could have actually been doing something and you will have wasted money supporting something that promoted and will continue to promote a falsehood.
      On a different note, I find it terrible that this young boy’s family is using his innocence and ignorance for profit, whether it be monetarily or “spiritually.”

      Scientists like Hawkings get to choose what scientific theory they like and dislike. They can believe whatever theories they want and argue the pro‘s and con’s. I would like for Hawking to explain what Einstein first discovered and what has been proven by testing. This is the ability of entwined photons to travel in opposite directions and communicate with each other instantaneously, faster that the speed of light. He would probably say that we haven’t progressed far enough to understand this as yet. I would say that he hasn’t progressed far enough to understand how Heaven and God exists as yet. These people ignore the things they cannot explain. I say that we should ignore scientists like Hawkins except for the specialized knowledge in science that they offer. We know much more than him.

      I’ll side with Hawking. If anyone has a reason to hope for paradise, he does. But he maintains intellectual honesty by always going where the facts lead. The testimony of the 12-year-old boy is in the category of Big Foot and UFO sightings.

      I wonder if Hawking has ever even tried to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ (knock and it shall be opened unto you) or does he just assume it’s all fake? Probably he’s too intelligent to waste his time with such matters. One thing is for sure, if he doesn’t take the time down here, he’ll figure it out later… based on what I‘ve seen I’ll have to side with the 12 year old on this one. :|

      Your seriously placing a story from a 12 year old against the intellect and experience of Stephen Hawkin. Let‘s for a moment accept the 12 year old’s STORY. Why would there not be countless other people who have had similar encounters. Funny how many here would reject people claiming encounters with aliens as absurd, but a similarly supernatural story from a 12 year old is given equal weight to Stephen Hawkin. OH PLEASE

      I am reading the book now (on page 41), my wife has read the book, and my mother-in-law is reading it at this time. My point is, among us all three, I am the only one who has read any of Hawking’s books. I believe in Heaven (and inversely Hell) as well as God’s only begotten Son (Jesus). Keep in mind that we are living in the last days, the signs are here – ie., “Knowledge is increased”, “people go to and fro” and many other prophesies. Soon it will be a crime to be Christian or Jewish, 5-10 years, I use crime loosely because persecution can occur with out laws being written just an “enabling” government. I have so much more…. May God bless you and your family. He is risen?

      Hawking doesnt beleive in God because it isnt part of his religion. Some men worship God, others worship science, money or man (governments). Science is also a faith based religion. It takes faith to believe that you can get something from nothing when that contradicts basic laws of physics. He believes that all the matter and energy of the universe and the very dimension that it exists in just appeared out of nothing. To me it is easier to believe that a supreme being with infinite wisdom and power was able to create an entire dimension that had laws of gravity that were’nt to strong as to cause everything to crush in on itself or too weak where planets and stars never coalesce from cosmic dust and debris. Planet Earth is positioned in optimum proximity to the sun so that the oceans dont boil away or freeze over. Our planet has an iron core that creates a magnetic shield that keeps solar winds from blowing our atmosphere away. The moon acts as a flywheel that keeps the Earth from wobbling on its axis and spinning with it’s pole facing the sun.
      Science’s second leap of faith once you establish a stable environment to sustain it is life. Not one of thousands of scientists has been able to reproduce in a controlled labratory experiment what supposedly happened in an open tidal pool filled with “primordial soup” next to an ocean during an electrical storm. Considering all this I think it takes a lot more faith to not belive in God.

      As usual, the ignorant spout off on things they have never researched. Doesn’t anyone find it ironic that Christians always have “Christian” near death experiences; Muslims always have Muslim experiences…etc? I wonder why Buddhists never see the “pearly gates” when they have near death experiences?
      Why is it that, when it comes to near death experiences, people always have the EXACT type of experience you would expect a person living in that particular time and place to have? Dah…
      Why is it that in Christian countries people always see JESUS (or Mary in Catholic countries) in mud puddles, grilled cheeze sandwiches, potato chip…etc, but never see any of the Hindus Gods? But in India, the people always see Hindu Gods, but not Jesus?..etc.
      “God”, “Heaven”, “Hell”, “Nirvana”…etc, is always EXACTLY what people have been psychologically conditioned to see them as.

      I feel very sorry for Hawking. So wise and yet so dead. For a man who has struggled for so much of his life to overcome great physical difficulties. Very sad and unfathomable. Wisdom does have its curse. Pray for him.

      Actually many people have had similiar encounters and I have spoken with 2 people that have had the same experience. One actually died twice and he will tell you about his experience , the change it wrought in his life…..What amazes me are those that are ragging cause the child’s father is a pastor. Most children’s parents would not pay attention or dismiss what they said. The fact that the family has faith in God does not negate his story. I was brought to God through science. Through logic and observation of our world I came to the only logical conclusion that can be reached. I don’t understand why people think that Science and belief in a Creator are somehow mutually exclusive. I think they go hand in hand. :)

      Mr. Hawking is correct. The broken down computer (mind/body) is not eternal. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to be intelligent enough to understand that the real you is software not hardware. The real you (soul/spirit) is eternal whether he chooses to accept it or not.
