Is High School Breast Cancer Awareness T-Shirt With Word ‘Bumps’ Inappropriate?

Arizona high school cheerleaders, like many donning pink and wearing breast cancer awareness slogans this month, created a t-shirt of their own. But the administration is saying they cannot wear the shirts as the message is “objectionable.”
The pale pink shirts of the Gilbert High School cheer team bear the slogan “Feel for Lumps, Save Your Bumps.” It’s a slogan that the cheer booster club president said was deemed more “high school appropriate” compared to others, like “Save the Tatas.”
Watch the local ABC affiliate’s report:
The Arizona Republic reports the girls had planned to wear the shirts at a Friday night football game to raise money for the cause and Principal J. Charles Santa Cruz said they could wear the shirts but needed to cover up the “Save Your Bumps” part:
“When we start combining those words and trying to be cute, I was concerned how it would impact the student body if it were worn for a prolonged period of time,” Santa Cruz said.
Gilbert High junior Natalie was reported as saying they believed the shirts didn‘t say anything a doctor wouldn’t say. The high schoolers note that other team or club t-shirts they have seen allude to sexual references, a reference they don’t believe is associated with their shirt. Arizona Republic has more:
The girls also said they have seen Gilbert High choir shirts with the words, “I’d hit that,” referring to a note. Santa Cruz said the shirts were worn last year and he advised the choir teacher the shirts were inappropriate and shouldn’t be worn.
The cheerleaders also said they’ve seen Gilbert High American sign-language club shirts said, “I’m good with my hands.” Another breast-cancer awareness shirt they’ve seen is “Save second base.”
“What’s the difference?” said Natalie, referring to their shirt. “This (the saying) isn’t even sexual.
A similar ban was enacted last year in school districts across the country against bracelets being worn by high school students with the phrase “I (heart) boobies.” Gilbert High was one of these schools.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 8:52amThey are just breasts. Believe it or not, they are not sexual. As men, we are hardwired to like them (has something to do with finding a mating partner – oh no science!) Also, it is hysterrical that on TV, we blur out butts! Everone has a butt and there is someone out there who thinks it is inappropriate to see someone elses. We’re such wierd creatures!

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 8:43amI see this breast cancer awareness stuff everywhere I look anymore. I think it’s great that there is concern for this unfortunate disease. But where are the ribbons and slogans for colon cancer? Why aren’t there brown ribbons on cars that say “save the buttholes”? The ball players could run around wearing brown shoes and brown gloves! What I’m getting at is, there seems to be a lot of support for breast cancer and very little for other cancers. Makes me wonder if all these people really care about breast cancer or do they just think boobies are cool! And no, I don’t think that the t-shirt is very appropriate for school kids.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 9:25amThere are over 200 different types of cancer (www.cancer.org) but breast cancer is getting most of the attention. I wonder why? My wife still has her bumps that even have names.
Here’s the right question I would be asking. Where are those T-shirts made?

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 12:11pmI agree, breast cancer is terrible and I am glad to see people aware and money raised to combat it, however I do think it’s more of a fad in many cases. All cancer is bad, and there are many types far more deadly and far less treatable that don’t get nearly the same attention.
I am not against the campaign though, every bit helps and if they find a cure for one cancer it could be a breakthrough for all cancers. I guess if you have to use tacky slogans and sexual innuendoes to get people‘s attention these days that’s just a sign of the time and culture we live in today.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 8:13pmSorry, not appropriate, I get the message but think about it from a high school perspective, ‘feel for lumps’ uhh…what do you suppose the next problem will be there? C’mon, we were all high schoolers at one time, us girls knew what was on the boys minds most of the time. ;) I wouldn’t allow my daughter to wear it, it invites the obvious. With that said, I agree, where are the slogans for testicular cancer, colon cancer, etc etc? It’s called Feminism. My grandmother died from breast cancer, it’s something as I get older that I am very much aware of, but I don’t paste pink ribbons on my car. I don’t esteem that particular cancer above any other, they are all devastating.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 8:18amThe love of my life a few years ago went through a double mastectomy, as such she also has two teen girls who may one day have to deal with the same problem. I also have a young daughter of my own. And I would much prefer an honest and open discussion about topics like this. If that means sayings like this to get people’s attention then so be it. Really we have much bigger issues to worry about then wether or not “feel for lumps, save your bumps” is offensive or inappropriate. I say let em wear the shirts! What’s the worst that happens, someone pays attention? Save the tatas.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 8:32amThese tee shirts are neither “cute” or “funny” and it’s not about “(teaching) these snarky kids about the seriousness of deadly diseases and instill compassion and respect for the sufferers.” The pink ribbon logo has become a symbol of the Koman Foundation having taken funds given them in good faith for cancer research and diverting a significant part of them to Planned Parenthood to further abortion on demand.
They will tell you that Planned Parenthood does breas cancer screening, but according to a story posted on The Blaze on March 30, 2011, they arent. Go to http://www.theblaze.com/stories/pro-life-group-exposes-planned-parenthood-mammogram-corruption/ for the story and a video.

Obviously this is just a fun way to raise awareness for the issue. It would be entirely different if my bumper sticker was just exclaiming a love for breasts, but its not, its raising awareness about breast cancer, and all proceeds from the sticker went to breast cancer research funding.

Education, not cute t-shirts regardless of the cause, should be our focus in high schools. Again – promoting social programs instead of promoting critical thinking. There are thousands of medical issues out there – imagine a “stick it below and save your hole” campaign for prostate cancer awareness. They should just stick to reading, writing and arithmetic.

Posted on October 15, 2011 at 6:29amWith a government that doesn’t want to teach self-examination, are you kidding? this government (I should say this administration) doesn’t want to teach self-examination techniques to detect breast cancer. My mom was an OB/GYN nurse since I was in about the 5th grade. I’ve known since I had “bumps” how to do a self exam. I had a functional cyst at the age of 17 that scared the daylights out of me. But because I knew cancer wasn’t supposed to hurt, and wasn’t smooth, I just watched it for one cycle and it was gone. We need education for our girls at a young age, too. Most boys don’t get prostate cancer at a young age, and it’s not a self exam. Your comment doesn’t apply.

Most women I know that have had Breast Cancer, just want support and friendship. They also want to know that after surgery, their spouse/lover will still view them as sexy. That’s plain speak people. You can strum it up all you want, but the truth is. I don’t really want to die just yet. I’d rather not be viewed as a victim NOR survivor…just as me. I‘m blessed with a caring church family or I’d never get through it. Some things you don’t even think of…like one friend is transporting my son to and from school for me so I don’t have to get out and drive twice a day. I won’t donate to Susan G. Komen anymore after finding out how much they donate to Planned Parenthood. If you want to support Breast cancer, find a survivor or someone going through treatment and support them. Donate crocheted/knitted/homemade hats to a cancer treatment center. Donate little pillows that go between the seatbelt and the wearer so the belt doesn’t hurt where you just had a breast removed.
