Is it Legal? Soros, Tides & Unions Use Illegals to Campaign for Dems

As Jonathan noted this morning, the Associated Press has uncovered how one group in Washington state is recruiting illegal immigrants to campaign door-to-door for Democratic candidates facing upsets in midterm election races on Nov. 2:
Pramila Jayapal, head of OneAmerica Votes, says the campaign is about empowering immigrants who may not feel like they can contribute to a campaign because they can’t vote.
Not only can individuals living in America illegally not vote, they’re also prohibited from contributing money to political campaigns. I’m not an expert in election law, but I do remember how then-Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign was forced to return a $265 donation from Zeituni Onyango, his aunt who had been living in the United States illegally for years. In a grey area of the law, shouldn’t volunteering time and talent also be considered a kind of “contribution” or “donation” to a campaign?
OneAmerica may skirt around these election laws because they are not an official arm of any one candidate’s campaign. However, as a 501(c)(3) organization, the Internal Revenue Service says they are prohibited from participating in political campaigns:
Under the Internal Revenue Code, all section 501(c)(3) organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office. Contributions to political campaign funds or public statements of position (verbal or written) made on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office clearly violate the prohibition against political campaign activity.
[N]o organization may qualify for section 501(c)(3) status if a substantial part of its activities is attempting to influence legislation (commonly known as lobbying)…
An organization will be regarded as attempting to influence legislation if it contacts, or urges the public to contact, members or employees of a legislative body for the purpose of proposing, supporting, or opposing legislation, or if the organization advocates the adoption or rejection of legislation.
A group like OneAmerica might get around these rules by conducting certain non-partisan “voter education activities,” however, according to the Associated Press, the group is “trying to get naturalized citizens to cast a ballot for candidates like Democratic Sen. Patty Murray, who is in a neck-to-neck race with Republican Dino Rossi.”
“Immigrants really do matter,” Jayapal said. “If we can’t vote ourselves, we’re gonna knock on doors, or get family members to vote.”
I’m all for everyone (all legally eligible citizens, that is) voting and contributing, but where do we draw the line? On Nov. 2, voters in two American cities will vote whether to allow non-citizens to vote in certain elections. In Portland, Maine, a ballot proposal could allow legal immigrants who have not yet obtained citizenship to vote in municipal elections. Likewise in San Francisco, a proposition would allow all parents of public school students to vote in school elections, regardless of legal status.
In the case of OneAmerica, Stanley Renshon of the Center for Immigration Studies observes:
What’s wrong with illegal immigrants taking part in the political process by trying to convince others to vote for pro-legalization candidates? Legally, as noted, nothing; ethically a great deal. …
They have no legal standing as members of the American national community and no moral standing, either, since they are present only by virtue of their own decision to violate American immigration laws.
Finally, I feel compelled to point out liberals’ incredible hypocrisy here.
According to their annual reports, Jayapal’s OneAmerica (formerly Hate Free Zone) receives funding from a number of liberal individuals and interest groups, including George Soros’ Open Society Institute, Planned Parenthood, SEIU, the Tides Foundation and a number of various union organizations.
While Democratic Party officials — including President Barack Obama — are out on the stump complaining about conservative groups who allegedly accept funds from foreign groups and labeling them a “threat to democracy,” what’s to be said about liberal interest groups using actual people from other countries to push their political agenda?

Why else would Soros have purchased NPR, and boosted funding of Med.Matrs. and Huf-n-Poo in such a big, fast and public way? His usual method would have been much more secretive and gradual.

Posted on October 22, 2010 at 8:18pmThe whole arguement hinges on if Illegal immigrants were paid for thier services. that’s the only area in which laws may have been broken (other than One America Votes skirting the laws of a 501 c).Non-citizens cannot vote, but the supreme court has ruled that Illegals have most of the same rights as citizens. They are free to do anything they want for any persons they chose, as long as they are not getting paid for the service, either in money or valuable goods.
I for one am not pleased about having illegals involved in the election process at any level, but this is America. Once you step foot on American soil, our constitution protects your basic rights. The only way to remove the rights of illegals in America is to remove illegals from our soil. Time to enforce the laws we already have on the books.

So, why do I believe this? Because the Democrat “Big Tent” Party is corrupt and contaminated from pole to rusted pole. They have gotten too big for their own Tent. Their Big Tent basically is covered with mold. More is not better. Bigger is not better. Eighty percent of this country have become the “consequences” of the elitist snobs who control the Democrat Tent – our ruling class. Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are the upper echelon on this mob, but they couldn’t do it without lots and lots and lots and lots of Democrat help – at every level of government in this nation. It is nothing more than trickle-down corruption, and it’s there at every level where Democrats are in control.
Look at our Democrat-run inner cities. Deterioration on speed. Who else but a contaminated Democrat would return people like Charlie Rangel and Maxine Waters, and Barney Frank, and Chuckie Schumer, and Dennis Kucinich, and Nancy Pelosi, and Barbara Boxer, and Anthony Weiner, and Harry Reid, and Chris Dodd, and countless others of this ilk? Look, Barack Obama thinks that he is bigger than the country. A team takes on the personality of its head coach or manager. Check out the news any day of the week if you don’t think this is proven over and over again. The Democrats have taken on the identity of their leader – and that’s bad news for the free enterprise system, the economy, freedom, liberty, opportunity, and any shot at the American Dream. These people live in a bubble, they have no idea what’s going outside that bubble, they are completely out-of-touch with mainstream America, and, worst of all – THEY DON’T CARE!
If we really want our country back, we’ve got to get every single Democrat we possibly can – out of office. At this point, a weak Republican [and there are more than enough of those] is still preferable to the best Democrat. Why? Because, just like the Blue Dogs [supposed “moderate” Democrats] and poster boy Charles Stupak showed us with ObamaCare, they talk a good game, and then they cave to their masters at crunch time. Democrats are destroying our future, they are destroying our economy, they are destroying jobs, they are destroying our families, they are destroying our churches and religion, they are destroying our national security, they are destroying our right to free speech, they are destroying our right to privacy, they are destroying our court systems, they are destroying free choice, they are destroying our free market system and the private sector, they are destroying out image throughout the world, they are destroying our history, they are destroying out exceptionalism, and they are destroying our Constitution and Bill of Rights.
In short, they are destroying our freedoms, our rights, our privacy, our opportunities, our liberties, and our way of life. They are taking a truly exceptional nation and turning it into any other common, ordinary, run-of-the-mill nation. They are replacing it with a Nanny State, Socialist, spread-the-wealth-around, big, bloated, supreme, power-hungry, corrupt government to control every aspect of our lives. They are doing it for themselves and for their ever-growing number of completely dependent, middle-to-lower class citizens, half of whom pay no taxes and have no vested interest in what is going on so long as their government checks come in on time. And they are doing it through corruption, to boot. Blame Bush my ass. For all his shortcomings, George W. Bush looks better and better every day.
If you are happy with how your life is going, if you are pleased with the direction the nation is headed, then vote D. If you are not, vote R. It’s really that simple. It is the Democrats who have created this travesty, and it is WE who must straighten it out. We must get every available Democrat, right down to the dog catcher, out of office. Our children, and generations to come are hanging in the balance.

My grandmother “learned” ENGLISH. She also studied “Spanish” and was fluent in her native tongue “Portuguese”, but she rarely used it. I love to hear the stories of imigrants coming to America and do volunteer work with some of them to learn english – one grandma who is an imigrant soon to take her citizenship tests does the darndest thing – her son, also an imigrant often slips into spanish when talking to others and she taps him on the back of the head and says “English – We are in America now.”

Posted on October 22, 2010 at 7:32pmI am familiar with the codes for the 501 (c) 3 non profit charities, and while it may just be skating around the letter of the law, they should still be investigated for the possibility of actual criminal offenses having been commited…Both by the local/state law agencies and the state and federal IRS as well for seeing if they may be in place to lose the non-profit status.
Of course I honestly do not expect any actions taken in the administrations ideas of political progressive correctness towards the illegals and Soros in paticular.
However, anything found to be enough to bring before a grand jury to consider for criminal offenses and charges – then do so.
Ethically this so WRONG to the highest of degrees, and needs to be cried aloud from the rooftops across the land so hopefully may be stopped.

For the case against Mr Obama, there is a Constitutional procedure for removal of an unfit President from the office – Articles of Impeachment, and the decision of voting to remove him while he is still in office.
If you feel strongly about removing him from office this way, then start the ball rolling with your senator and campaign the call for impeachment, the progressives did often and loud with Bush during his two terms in office – so there is indeed a precident for the actions.
