Is it OK to Gloat About bin Laden’s Death?

NEW YORK (AP/THE BLAZE) — When Hoyjin Jenny Hwang wrote on Facebook that she was saddened by the sight of young Americans like herself jubilantly cheering Osama bin Laden’s death, the angry response was swift, even from friends.

“One friend told me she felt judged for feeling happy,” said the 30-year-old mother from New Jersey. “And another one simply unfriended me on Facebook.”

Is it OK to Gloat About bin Ladens Death?

As the hours passed, though, and the initial giddiness settled a bit, Hwang received messages of support, too, from people similarly unnerved by the scenes of euphoria: chants of “USA! USA!” at the White House gates and ground zero; signs such as “Obama 1, Osama 0″; or T-shirts now available online, saying “GOT HIM!” and illustrated by a stick figure of a dead bin Laden.

It‘s one thing to be satisfied that the world’s most wanted terrorist has been brought to justice. But where does satisfaction end and gloating begin? It’s a question being posed online by ordinary Americans, religious figures, various commentators and several 9/11 widows. Consider Rudy Giuliani’s reaction to the news that bin Laden died, which is captured in the clip below. Guiliani was mayor of New York City when the planes struck the twin towers.

And it‘s a question bound to be on President Barack Obama’s mind as he treads that fine line in a visit Thursday to ground zero in New York.

Could Obama’s visit in itself be interpreted as gloating? The president seemed well aware of the dangers. He planned a somber and quiet visit — no speech, the White House said, just laying a wreath at the World Trade Center site and meeting privately with families and first responders.

“The president thinks it’s entirely fitting and appropriate to visit the site … in the wake of this significant and cathartic moment for the American people,” said White House spokesman Jay Carney.

One of the city’s tabloids, the Daily News, had a bit of advice for the president: It urged him not to defile the site by mentioning bin Laden’s name, “the six syllables that memorialize savagery.”

It was impossible to tell whether those Americans feeling uneasy with the celebrating were in the majority or minority; the few polls conducted since the news broke haven’t asked the question. For three women who lost husbands on 9/11, the jubilant scenes that took place Sunday night were disturbing.

Kristen Breitweiser said they brought back images of bin Laden supporters celebrating in the streets on that infamous day in 2001.

“Forgive me, but I don’t want to watch uncorked champagne spill onto hallowed ground where thousands were murdered in cold blood,” she wrote Monday on the Huffington Post. “And it breaks my heart to witness young Americans cheer any death — even the death of a horrible, evil, murderous person — like it is some raucous tailgate party on a college campus. Why are we not somber?”

Another 9/11 widow, Marian Fontana, wrote on Salon of how her son, Aidan, who was 5 when his father died, had gone to school on Monday and called at lunchtime, wanting to come home.

“Everyone is talking about bin Laden. In every class, they are happy he is dead, but I don’t feel happy,” she said he told her.

And Deena Burnett Bailey, of Little Rock, Ark., who lost her husband Tom Burnett, said she was struggling with how to talk to her teens about bin Laden’s death.

“To say that I’m happy that he was killed just seems odd, and it goes against my Christian faith,” she said. “The girls and I were talking about it. … One of them said, ‘What can we say, Mom? We can’t say praise the Lord, he’s dead.’ I said, ‘I know. You just have to know that someone else made that decision, and that he will now stand before judgment for having killed so many people.’”

Online, some Americans said they saw absolutely nothing wrong with Sunday’s outpouring.

“If you cannot cheer about the demise of a truly wicked man who took so much from us, what do you celebrate?” asked Edward Hannigan, 45, of Chico Hills, Calif., editor of an online music magazine, on Facebook. In another post, he added: “I‘m damn happy he’s dead. And on top of that, I hope it hurt. A lot.”

But Donna Guhr, a waitress in Crestone, Colo., refused to cheer. “Out of ALL the people here in my town I’ve spoken with I only know two people who agree with the celebrating,” she wrote, also on Facebook. “Gives me hope.”

In a follow-up phone interview, Guhr, 44, said she was concerned about scenes of the jubilation inciting retaliatory attacks. “He had a lot of followers, and they’re not getting any happier with us,” she said of bin Laden.

She added that the celebrations made her recall a quote attributed to Gandhi: “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.”

Not surprisingly, the question reached the late-night comedy shows.

“I hope I am never again this happy over someone’s death,“ quipped Stephen Colbert on Monday night on ”The Colbert Report.” His fellow Comedy Central host, Jon Stewart, mused: “I suppose I should be expressing some ambivalence about the targeted killing of another human being. And yet — uhhhh, no!”

Some serious concerns came from religious leaders.

The Rev. Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, wrote that bin Laden’s death was justified as an act of war, but not as an act of justice. He said death should never be celebrated.

“Such celebration points to the danger of revenge as a powerful human emotion,” he wrote on his website this week.

The Vatican said Christians could never rejoice about the death of any human being. But spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi noted that bin Laden was responsible for having caused the deaths of countless innocents and for having used religion to spread “division and hatred among people.”

And the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, an association of about 700 conservative congregations in the U.S., said its tradition “warns us not to celebrate the death of any human being, even of our worst enemies, but it does not stop us from gratitude that some measure of justice has been exacted.”

On Wednesday, just south of ground zero, Phyllis Mitchell was sitting on a bench in front of a restaurant, keeping on her hardhat during a break from her construction job — helping rebuild the trade center. She was wary of what Thursday might bring, along with the president.

Though she didn’t think the president himself was gloating, Mitchell said she was unhappy with what she’d seen on Sunday night in the same spot.

“I didn’t like the celebrations I saw,” she said. “It doesn‘t make sense to celebrate anybody’s death. Even his.”

I feel relief he’s not causing trouble directly anymore… As a Christian it is however wrong to celebrate our enemies deaths as the bible says in no uncertain terms several times. We are even supposed to love our enemy though that can difficult. The message of Martin Luther King Jr. Was largely the same.

I will not be a hypocrite, and affirm that it’s good that they got him… I won’t gloat about it though.

I once read that you only love Jesus as much as you love your worst enemy.
Because of this, I need to at least respect that he was a human being with a soul.
I‘m mighty thankful he’s no longer a threat, although I do NOT believe in any way he
was still the USA’s #1 enemy by any means. I don’t think he held that level of power
      at this point.

We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.

I do feel relief. I do feel extremely thankful our military was so skilled and

Bin Laden still was a human being however, and the fact that one more lost soul
has entered eternity makes me solemn, albeit grateful that because he’s gone, no one
else will suffer because of him

What I don‘t get however is why the media kept reporting that he wasn’t’ a “muslim”, but an
extremist. His kids were trained in religious (muslim) schools. They went out of their way to
attend to all details of a proper muslim burial…why do this if he doesn’t represent muslims?
(Not saying they should “disgrace” the body…but why all the ceremony in accordance with strict
      muslim tradition??)

Is it a “sin” too in your world when you get over the flu and enjoy the feeling of being well again? Where does this religious rule end? Gloating is called for in this instance. Personally, I plan on extending this particular gloat past its expiration date and then some.

And the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, an association of about 700 conservative congregations in the U.S., said its tradition “warns us not to celebrate the death of any human being, even of our worst enemies, but it does not stop us from gratitude that some measure of justice has been exacted.”

Kinda torn between two emotions here. On one hand am I glad that the SOB is dead-DAMN RIGHT!! Is it gloating too think that O/UBL got exactly what is coming to him?? I don’t think so. Should we party like it’s 1999?? No it isn’t right. I think how outraged I am everytime I see those animals firing AK-47′s in the air and passing out candy to the kids when something bad happens to us and I like to think, Hell I don’t think, I know we are better then they are. So take quiet satisfaction the bastard is dead and will never again harm anybody. He has faced his maker and been judged. What his fate is we will never know, but I like to think that if Allah is really the God of Abraham U/OBL is not enjoying where he is right now. And if Allah really does enjoy the blood of innocents shed in his name and has given U/OBL his palace and 72 Houris well lets just say that is a God I want nothing to do with and I will continue to enjoy my pork so that I never have to worry about meeting Him.

Likewise it is also too much to be overly grievous about someone dying, because the dead are taken care of, and it can only be that people grieve for themselves.

Could Obama’s visit in itself be interpreted as gloating?
      —————————–
Nope. No way. Not at all.
Gloating is not the term for what he will be doing in NYC .
      The correct words are :
      CAMPAIGNING
      MILKING
      CASHING-IN
      RALLYING
      SPEECHIFYING
      TOTUS-ING
      FUND-RAISING
Gloating ? No way ..he is visiting the site where 15 jihadies died so that there can be a mosque on that spot one day. Its not a joyous event ( wink wink *_o)

“Is it OK to Gloat About bin Laden’s Death?”
      —————————————————————-
I’m going to treat this as a two part question.

If you mean is it ok for the American people to gloat about his death, you bet!

If you mean is it ok for Obama to gloat for political points like he will do Thursday, h&ll no!
In fact I find it pretty down-right disgusting. When I heard today that his political advisers told him to take advantage of the bump he has in the polls by going to Ground Zero, go on TV, and solidify his bounce poll numbers, I almost threw up!

      Help draft Colonel West…

Gloating is a negatively loaded word. Of course it’s wrong to “gloat.” It‘s the same kind of trick that politicians use when they say they don’t want to impose “excessive taxes” on the populace. Of course you don’t. Nobody likes “excessive” taxes just like how nobody likes “overspiced food”.

Much better to say that Americans are feeling a sense of justice at his death.

Obama will delay the publication of the OBL photos as long as possible. He wants to keep this story in the news. He knows this is a great opportunity (which as we all know, never goes to political waste).

If the news shows keep talking about the great Obama taking out OBL, then they won’t be talking about $5/gal gas.

From his perspectice, the longer he can keep the story in the news, the better.

Obama will release the photo when it is politically beneficial, and not a moment before.

Hey Bible Quotin‘ Science Fearin’ Conservative American….Here is a question about the emotions of completing a long mission to avenge the death of fellow Americans, and how a sincere Christian should seek to end any feelings of guilt associated emotions or feelings winning the battle over an enemy who spilled First Blood.
Let us open the Holy Bible to Psalm 58 verses10 and 11…here is what it says:
      10 The righteous shall rejoice
when he seeth the vengeance: he
shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
11 So that a man shall say,
Verily there is a reward for the
righteous: verily he is a God that
      judgeth in the earth.

Psalm 59; The Psalmist prays and asks od to destroy his enemies. Read the whole thing.
      Verse 10
My God of mercy shall come to meet
      me;
God shall let me see my desire on my enemies.

See! It is normal for God’s children to call God to wipe out our true enemies, including Bin Laden!!!!

i’ve been torn over this one too. glad that such a sadistic agent of evil is gone. wish he would not have been shown so much respect by the presant admin. the muslims are going to take it as a typical christian burial at sea. it’s extremely rare for them to do this.
i can understand the feelings of relief and jubilation at justice. but now there is the threat of escalated violence. the current affairs that are not being tended to and the fact that the war is not over. there will be time to celebrate at the end of this war.

I was surprised to feel just like Stephen Colbert. The feelings just came, and had nothing to do with revenge. Probably more to do with OBL’s role in the world in which my children must live, and the added horrers he brought to the planet. After 9/11 the police included my street in their rounds–as there were Americans living so close to where the Muslims were dancing in the streets….in Western Europe!

The SEALS had silencers but if they were fired at by the three Jihadist this would have alerted Bin Laden. He was a combat veteran and going room to room takes time, is noisy. This is all turning too suspicious the more we hear. If they blew holes in walls Reuters would have photos of those too.????? Now they had prisoners, but took NONE. ?????? it is sad that WE THE PEOPLE do not TRUST our OWN government or what we see on the Government controlled Media. As far as we know this site could be too!!! I still believe the “Compound” was actually a Prison and Bin Laden was under HOUSE arrest by the Paki’s. Pakistan has more Jihadist/ Terroist bombings DAILY than any other country in the world!!!! They have NO freedoms or civil rights. Everyone is being WATCHED !!!!

The supposedly killing of this ONE Jihadists gives me no reason to gloat anymore than the ones the Marines and military are killing on a daily basis. The only good Jihadist is a DEAD Jihadists!! The SEALS and Spec-ops are doing the same raids into even more dangeraous situations than this one DAILY. Why do you think we have DRONE attacks. Raids like this are NOT necessary, unless you want PRISONERS , information or to ASSINATE !!

Not only am I JUBILANT, I’m ECSTATIC, GLOATING and EXTREMELY HAPPY that Osama-bin-Laden has been shot down like the mad dog that he was. He’ll never again be jubilant, ecstatic or gloating when another building is blown up and comes crashing down to the streets with thousands of innocent victims dying in it.

I‘m not really concerned about not being able to view pictures of Osama’s dead body. However, I would like to have a video of Osama’s reaction when he arrived in hell and found out that his 72 virgins were Mohammad, Satan and his demons dressed in drag. Ha

You brought up a great point. How much was UBL worth to the Paki’s? The Paki’s would certainly have kept anything of very high value under lock and key…no doubt. Maybe they were waiting (or waited) for the market price of UBL to reach it’s peak.

Sacred honor, your bible quotes against gloating are one of the many reasons I dumped the nonsense of religion into the dust bin after many decades of being fooled into buying into that nonsense. Loving your enemy (in this case a group that wants us all dead) is not advisable ever and an idiotic and dangerous path to follow.

If we can’t feel good, and gloat about killing UBL then we can’t feel good about anything anymore. UBL would kill all of us if he had the chance. Our troops are working hard to protect us and they need to know we like it. For a few moments there was a flash in my mind that Obama did a good job in killing UBL. Now he has walked that back.

Obama was usurped, maybe even couped against, and he STILL stands as our leader, as the one who pulled the trigger himself.
