Is Lib Pastor Jim Wallis Right to Say That Christians Should ‘Embrace’ the Occupy Movement?

Jim Wallis Says Occupy Movement Chance for Church to Engage Nonbelievers

Progressive pastor Jim Wallis’ support for Occupy Wall Street was inevitable, especially considering his ties to ultra-liberal individuals and causes. From the beginning, the faith leader was enamored by the anti-capitalist movement. He has proudly proclaimed that the protesters “stand with Jesus” and that they have distinguished themselves as inspirational “citizen economists.”

These comments, of course, have drawn the ire of conservative Christians who simply don’t agree with his assessment. It didn’t take long for this praise, which was by many accounts a backdoor endorsement of sorts, to evolve into a full-fledged support effort taken up by both Wallis and his liberal faith group, Sojourners.

Last week, as you may recall, the Blaze reported on Wallis’ insistence that Thanksgiving is the perfect time to invite Occupiers to church. “Open our church basements and parish halls as safe places to sleep — shelter and sanctuary as cold weather descends upon many of our cities,” he wrote. “The Occupy movement needs a sanctuary. And what better safe and welcome place could these young people find than with communities of faith?”

On Wednesday morning, Wallis continued his overt push for Christians to support the movement — or, at the least, to embrace those individuals who comprise it. He took to the Sojourners web site to write about his experiences visiting the Occupy London protesters earlier this week.

Jim Wallis Says Occupy Movement Chance for Church to Engage NonbelieversAs he discussed seeing the Occupiers outside of Saint Paul’s Cathedral, he wrote, “What a picture of the Incarnation,“ and he said that he ”marvel[ed] at the scene.” Wallis continued:

So here is the church in the midst of the international conversation that is changing the world — right where we should be.

And what an opportunity it revealed. The vivid metaphor of St. Paul’s in the streets of the public debate over the world’s inequality is a clear call to mission, to ministry, to hospitality, to prayer, and to prophetic ministry. At the steps of the cathedral, the Occupiers of London have found sanctuary.

As he looked at the protesters, Wallis wrote that the “dramatic picture” that was painted served as an inspirational “visual sign” of what he imagined the Christian church would be able to offer the world’s younger generation — a collective of people he says are seeking a better world.

He goes on to say that the Occupy movement is an opportunity to “embrace” individuals who might not otherwise attend church or have interest in Christianity. He’s careful to write that, “endorsement is not the point,” though it‘s hard to qualify Wallis’ actions as anything short of doing just that.

But there’s a point in his piece where he asks a very interesting question: “Isn’t this what we should long for?“ The ”this” he’s referring to here is the aforementioned opportunity to engage people who might otherwise not seek faith in a higher power. He also asks, “So why, as [Jesus'] followers, don’t we enter the fray?”

Jim Wallis Says Occupy Movement Chance for Church to Engage NonbelieversHere, Wallis claims there’s an opportunity to bring the Occupiers into “church basements and parish halls.” Considering that Christianity hinges on the Great Commission — the commandment that came from Jesus Christ, telling all of his followers to spread his teachings throughout the world — Wallis’ words are intriguing.

While one might disagree fervently with Wallis and with the Occupy movement, most Christians do agree that reaching out to as many people as possible with Jesus’ message is an essential command. So, should those who embrace Christianity be engaging with the Occupy movement?

It should be noted that Wallis‘ words here are based more on meeting peoples’ needs (which is likely tied more to his thirst for social justice than anything else). Thus, he may be calling for individuals to literally bring the Occupiers in so that they can be helped physically, rather than spiritually (although there are undertones of both in his writing).

Others, though, have already begun to address these spiritual issues. Take, for instance, these men, who the Blaze reported on last month. Rather than joining in on the Occupation, they‘re encouraging Americans to turn to prayer to fix the nation’s horrific economic situation.

In the end, regardless of Wallis’ take on the protest movement, this raises a question for Christians of all stripes: How should they be treating the Occupy movement as well as the individual protesters it is comprised of?

This isn’t to say that Christians should be jumping in and supporting the protests, but, considering Biblical mandates, it may be worth asking — for those who believe — how Jesus would like them to handle it.

Does Wallis make any valid points about interacting with the Occupiers? Let us know, in the comments section, below.

NO, NO, a thousand times a thousand times NO.

“You shall know them by their fruit” Jesus said….and the fruit of this movement rotten, stinking, irresponsible, disrespectful, selfishness, filthy like the diseases that were spawned, the deposits of exudate left on the sidewalks and doorways and the piles of garbage left behind for others to clean up.

This movement is a typical leftist labor tactic, nothing more. In Wisconsin they left the state with thousands of dollars of damage to the capital and made fools of themselves.

The leftist city fathers, like Bloomberg, were just wrong and irresponsible to allow them to camp out and disturb the peace.

One good thing – they haven’t tried what the entitled class did in London last summer, rioting, breaking windows. Probably too many ex-marines, too many governors who would call out the National Guard, too many voters and taxpayers have gotten disgusted the Occupiers in the parks and in the White House.

There is such a thing as unintended consequences or backlash.

He is just a secular humanist that believes in social justice. His whole purpose is just to confuse the spiritually weak and bring religious cover to those that truly believe that faith and power lives solely in government and politics. To him, God is just a tool to get people moving in the left direction.

Sibyl, I am not a leftist laborer or part of any labor leftist movement. I am a devoted follower of the Lord Jesus Christ and agree with Jim Wallis. Jesus did speak about the need for “fruit inspection”, but he also cautioned believers to “stay awake” – and I believe that warning is for his followers’ need to discern whether the “tempter” is deceptively working his works in whatever private or public context. It is interesting that the singular incidents presented in the New Testament in which Jesus took violent, aggressive action were against those whose M.O. was “elitist,” “archconservative” (by-the-‘b’ook religiously, socially, and politically), committed to the “profits-above–people” economic model, and politically aligned with the power of Empire – an alignment that not only extracted the meager monetary means of the common people in order to enrich the wealthy elite, but also subverted the integrity of the people’s access to the one True God (and that true liberty which flows from God’s alternate supra-rule) by infusing commerce – a “status quo” world-system maintained and controlled by the local and the (first century) global (viz Roman) elite. In a most glaring affront to the asleep American church, I’d say that the Occupy folks are the only thing going societally that is exposing (Eph. 5:11) the illegitimacy of the present ruling order according to the only & final standard that matters – God’s. Paul tells us in Romans to respect our authorities for God placed them there, be they evil or no. Samuel told King Saul that God desires obedience far more than sacrifice and disobedience is like the sin of witchcraft. And in Deut. Moses tells us the same Disobedience is as the sin of witchcraft. And so, Sybil, I can relate to your beliefs….for I stand on God’s infallible Word. And as a fruit inspector, there‘s little doubt this ’priest‘ is not just ’loving the sinner’, but loving the sin as well. I’d give any one of the OWS crowd a meal, blanket, etc. And share a warm room and safety. But no money, and will not march even if I did agree with them politically. Sybil, you WILL represent Jesus to everyone you are seen by on a daily basis. And depending on your behavior those same people will either love Jesus, or hate him.
On the other hand, Jesus also told us not to cast our pearls before swine……

Yo Jim, What God do you serve, Socialism does not really leave room for religion. Wall Street is not the cause of America’s woes, or the world’s for that matter. Most of the problems in the world today are the direct result of the manipulation of a small group of people, who control most of the money. The people who have invested in wall street are bieng “bled” like the rest of us. The “protestors” are being used, they are ill informed and misguided. I do not remember any stories in the Bible about Christ getting involved in any political struggles,…..”Render unto Ceasar, that which is Ceasar’s…..”

      Sibyl.
With the picture in my mind of a protester dressed as Jesus, a sign around his neck asking; Why do you think I threw out the money lenders? ..I think that’s close anyway. These thoughts come to mind
To paraphrase “He who does not work, shall not eat”. You can take that literally, or Spiritually and apply it to OWS. If what they are doing is their work, then they shall be “known” by it. Again, take that either way. Beware though, that unless they propose that their work be in the name of Jesus, it is not for Christians to judge. That we leave to God. We are charged with unconditional Love. Yes, even for our enemies. So, providing the basic necessities of life is well within that duty. You don’t have to agree with them, and you don’t have to eat with them, but if you would take the opportunity, you just might convert a few of them; and shouldn’t that be the goal? and a chance worth taking?
From what I have seen, these are mostly young people, and they have been mislead. I am not saying that they are without fault, and I am not saying that they should not answer for their legal crimes. I am saying that they are symptoms of the greater disease. A visual sign of the real destruction that is taking place within. So, I am asking that, before passing final judgement, ask yourself how they developed their sense of entitlement(?), and empowerment(?) and work to change that. Fight the disease, and the symtoms will disappear. It will be a much more rewarding victory.

I think you are accusing me of judging! If that is correct, you are wrong. A judge not only finds the person guilty but assigns the punishment and has it carried out. I don’t do that! I’ll bet you have heard some liberal say, ” oh I don’t judge” They also like to use the phrase, ” Oh I’m not going to throw the first stone” They use that Biblical verse out of context. When Jesus said, “ he that is without sin can throw the first stone” Jesus was actually talking about throwing a stone at the women caught in adultery to kill her, Jesus was not speaking of someone merely speaking of someone being caught up in sin. Understand that or should I give you another hint? Judging from your first post I’ll bet this post is way over your head, you probably will feel a breeze on your ears if you read this!

Arrogance is a common trait to Liberals. They also seem to ‘open mouth and insert foot’ quite often, I see you are no different.

We do have a right to express our opinion. We also have the right to express another actions as something we would not do or call them on their action. Final judgement will be with God, not us. If I do judge, then God clearly states that I should also be judged also. I can accept that, can you?

I have said here many times that Wallis is a fraud he is no Christian , he is a Marxist Communist. I once challenged him on a particular article he wrote for the Huffington post a few years ago . I questioned his faith and called him a fraud and I based it on my younger days when I was a Leftist stating that I know a Communist when I see one and that I knew of him back then as a Marxist and had read some of his stuff when he was a SDS student. I can not quote the exact response now but the he called me a traitor for leaving the movement and that some day I would pay for decision. Only a communist would say that only a hardliner would reference retribution for my living or betraying the cause. I have herd that from others when I was young when they threatened those who decided Leftism was wrong. At that time I was only 18 years old I hung around activists mainly because of the women , I was never really a idealistic but I spent two and a half years with these people and learned a lot and I have not forgotten it.

I am not a Number; I am not a Member of the Socialist Collective; I am an Individual; I am a Freeman; I choose to Give when the Spirit Moves Me; and, my Salvation is of my Thoughts & Deeds!

My slavation comes from Jesus, His virgin birth, His sinless life, and the cross and His resurrection. My works are as filthy rags. My Bible says if I have broke one law, I’ve broke them all, guilty as charged, my sins must be atoned for and I can’t do that by anything that I do, Salvation is a gift of God lest any man should boast!

      Acts 20:28-30

28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God,[a] which he bought with his own blood.[b] 29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.

only if he believes that the human race should wallow in poverty and despair! http://commonsense21c.com/
An economic crisis, ending in violent chaos is the prescription for replacing a Republic with a Dictatorship. Since taking office, Mr. Obama’s agenda has been a blueprint for establishing that economic crisis.

That agenda is approaching completion. The economic crisis is almost upon us and the civil unrest to justify a declaration of martial law and suspension of the Constitution has started with the “OCCUPY WALL STREET” campaign. The Tyrant has slightly one year to bring his plan to fruition. The economic conditions resulting from Mr. Obama’s agenda to create the economic crises will certainly prevent reelection.

On February 24, 2011 President Obama informed Congress that he would not enforce the laws that he disagreed with. He continues to create new law with Executive orders. Thus, Mr. Obama declared himself a Dictator? Is this our new form of government? A Dictator does not require the approval of Congress! Dictators don’t resign and dictators don’t allow free elections! The “OCCUPY WALL STREET” is the beginning of the final step to consolidate tyrant’s power!

Jim Walsh is a wanna be, Occupy movement has been nothing but violence, rape and a waste of money for taxpayers. We should send the bill to George Sorros for all the expenses this joke of a movement has caused.

Hey Jim, you’re the last dude I would listen to about anything to do with the Bible, Christianity–all things God. Until I’m proven wrong, I believe you are a white-washed sepulcher. Or, the label, “lib” works just fine as well.

The way I will support the protesters is to teach them arithmetic & history for starters.

Start with 2.6 trillion minus 3.6 trillion equals negative one trillion.

    In history the following occurred…………

As far as shelter___ GO HOME AND TAKE A BATH!

Are you out of your mind? The Occupy movement is nothing more than Obama’s brownshirts, espousing antisemitism, socialism and hate. It is an abomination.
