Is Mitt Romney the Next Gipper?

Immediately following Mitt Romney’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, the son of America’s most iconic — and for many, most beloved — president tweeted that since the passing of his father, America hasn’t had a true “cheerleader” until now.
To wit, one thing Reagan was perhaps best known for, was his ability to bring people together by finding the common thread that bound them. The Gipper, as he was affectionately dubbed, appealed to Americans’ sense of optimism, rather than exploit their basest fears and negativity. Strategists often recall that he focused on strength not weakness, and boosted the nation’s confidence, rather than prey upon its insecurities. He reminded the country why America was the greatest nation on earth, rather than denigrate it in the public square for its shortcomings.
It was Reagan’s penchant for diplomacy, honing in on that with which those on both sides of the aisle could agree, that made him so effective. To this end, he rarely touched on tense social issues like abortion, ceding that the GOP was a “big tent party” comprising people of all walks and beliefs. He knew that no president — no leader anywhere in the world — would ever get everyone to see eye-to-eye on such issues, and so instead chose to focus on the economy and the Cold War as the unifying issues of his time.
Oddly, it is said that Obama, too, has studied the great communicator with a view toward emulating his style and modus operandi. Yet with his divisive class and race warfare rhetoric, and consistent focus on America’s failings, the current president seems to be channel exactly the opposite of what Reagan embodied.

FILE - In this Aug. 29, 2012 file photo, Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney speaks at the American Legion National Convention in Indianapolis. When Romney addresses the Republican convention Thursday night, he'll do it from a stage that puts him a little bit closer to the crowd inside the convention hall. His campaign hopes the evening ends with Americans feeling a little bit closer to the Republican presidential candidate, too. Credit: AP
But is Mitt Romney really invoking Reagan’s finer points?
An examination of his current campaign theme coupled with Thursday evening’s speech at the Republican National Convention seems to indicate that he just might be.
A Washington Times column points out that the former Massachusetts governor plans to mirror Reagan’s 1980 presidential campaign by posing voters with the burning question: “Are you better off than you were four years ago?”
“That question can’t be answered in the affirmative by many voters,” senior Romney adviser Kevin Madden told the Times on Thursday.
This concept is underscored by Romney’s own words at the convention, when he noted that regardless of blame, or promises, or anything else Obama could attempt to sell voters this election, one thing he cannot do is tell Americans that they are better off now than they were when he was first elected.
“This president can ask us to be patient. This president can tell us it was someone else’s fault. This president can tell us that the next four years he’ll get it right. But this president cannot tell us that YOU are better off today than when he took office,” the Republican nominee said during his speech.
Adding another Reaganesque layer to the Romney platform, The Washington Post also dissected the following moments from Romney’s RNC speech and compared it to those of the conservative icon. The Times cites:
* On American exceptionalism: Romney — “I refuse to believe America is just another place on the flag”; Reagan — “I don’t agree that our nation must resign itself to inevitable decline, yielding its proud position to other hands.”
* On states’ rights: Romney — “This president’s answer to every problem is to take power from you”; Reagan — “The federal government has taken on functions it was never intended to perform and which it does not perform well.”
* On the economy: Romney — “With the economy in crisis, [Obama’s] answer is to borrow money we can’t afford and throw it at Washington bureaucrats and politicians”; Reagan — “The people have not created this disaster in our economy; the federal government has. It has overspent, overestimated, and over-regulated.”
* On the future: Romney — “The principles that made us a great nation and leader of the world have not lost their meaning…I believe in America”; Reagan — “I believe that you and I together can keep this rendezvous with destiny.”
The fact that Romney seems to be channeling Reagan in both his speech and overall campaign platform also makes sense when considering that Obama has been compared to Jimmy Carter perhaps more than any other president.
In fact, during his speech Thursday evening at the Republican National Convention, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich compared the two presidents, saying that Obama and Carter both “took our nation down a path that in four years weakened America’s confidence in itself.”
Is Obama the Jimmy Carter of our time and is Mitt Romney our next Gipper? Perhaps by morning in America, the country will know.

I believe Romney WILL deliver and then people will be able to see the stark contrast between America’s freedom and small government ideas and the oppressive and destructive nature of Marxism and big governments. There hasn’t been such an obvious contrast in modern times. I wonder if Liberals will be able to see past their ideology and see the truth this time.

In fact if Mitt Romney had been Moses – Mitt Romney would have paid women 50 Shekels, and paid men 30 Shekels in direct defiance of the Lord God who instructed Moses to pay males 50, and females 30 Shekels. In short, if you believe Reagan was the worst of citizens and anti-American. And while the facts do not support the absurd level of misplaced reverence Reagan received, he was man of high character, a leader and a citizen first and foremost. Romney is none of those. Posted on August 31, 2012 at 1:49pm@soybomb315_II And of course the wealthy don’t create jobs either. Only and that means only DEMAND for a product or service creates jobs. The devastation that Bush’s economic failures and worst recession ever wielded on the middle class and consumer demand cannot be understated. There is no doubt that the pick of Sarah Palin as the McCain’s VP was a cowardly strategy to duck 2008 and avoid having to deal with the 8 million jobs lost under Bush and his $1.2 trillion deficit run rate. The wealthy, similar to mutual funds, pension funds, etc. invest in companies that respond to DEMAND. And if the DEMAND is strong enough, even banks will lend companies money to expand. But as witnessed by Mitt Romney, much of the wealthy today hide their money offshore within shell corporations and claim “I don’t know anything about my investments” Another great example of Romney’s sense of truth. He was a CEO of an investment banking company but would not participate in the investment of his own money. But that makes about as much sense as his flip flops and virtually every substantive issue and feigned concern that his tax returns will be misrepresented by his opponent. If they contain what Romney asserts they contain, why would he think he would be hurt.

Solyndra made Solar Panels for $6 and sold them for $3. The Chinese make them for cheaper and sell more. So Solyndra was a good business model to throw $500 million tax payer dollars at to you JCROOK? Heck…not just that..let’s subordinate the loan guarantees so that when the obvious happens and Solyndra goes bust..it protects Obama‘s campaign bundler’s $75 million investment in Solyndra just the same…while the tax payer is left holding the bag.
How do you think Romney would have approached Solyndra JCROOK? By throwing $500 million tax payer dollars at a company with a ridiculous business model, no demand for their product and warnings from every credible analyst that Solynra will go bankrupt? Still…the grin with a body behind it (hat tip Clint Eastwood) Joe Biden and Prince Barry had some photo ops there trying to sell Barry‘s stimulus that he laments he didn’t sell well enough in retrospect.
Is that enough Obama lies and incompetence for you JCROOK or do you need more humiliation?

Aren’t we feisty today? You 4 are out working the blogs together are you?
Let me ask a simple question to which I already know the answer…
“If Mitt Romney actually was a God fearing president, if he really does have a love for America and the American people, if he balances the budget, started us on a patch to cutting the debt, got un-employment down to it’s normal level or 4% to 5%, eliminated/reduced the size of un-needed government departments, restored relations with Israel, got rid of Obamacare, restored the free-markets, regulated the fed, cut taxes on business, and promoted growth in the country, would eat your words? Or even give him a little credit? Heck even a compliment on a job well done?
My guess is that you wouldn’t. You don’t know how, because you are so consumed with hate and negativity that you’ve lost all hope. I believe we are still a blessed country. I believe that God is still with us if we turn to him in this darkened time. If we continue to express hate, negativity, and turn away from Him, then He’ll be forced to turn away from us.
Trust in God. Control what you can control, and turn the rest over to God to control what you can’t control. It’s invigorating and will make you happy and give you hope!

Unlike Obama, Romney is in love with the idea of a strong, vibrant America..leading the world, whereas Obama sees America’s place as just another country. You can see Romney gets energized by the thought of a vigorous American economy and a stong America. You can see it in his demeanor.
Romney will lead this country out of the Obama doldrum and get it moving..energetically not lethargically…in the right direction. He knows what needs to be done in a pragmatic way that only experience and success can do for someone. Obama was marinated in leftist thought from childhood and this taints every decision he makes. “For Glenn Beck to even say he is the best republican in the 2012 field is unbelievable”
To be fair, he was the only one with a shot at winning. Even if Ron Paul was the only one actually worried about the economy, he couldn’t convince enough Republicans that “it’s the economy, stupid!” The rest were all critically flawed and never would have stood a chance in a general election, let alone the primary.
So, yes, Romney was “the best the 2012 field had to offer.” It just so happens that the entire field was incredibly weak. It’s like saying “This C- student is the best the field had to offer, because the rest were failing.”

Because he’s still a terrible candidate. But like I said: he was the only one that had a chance in both the primary and nationally. If Ron Paul had a chance of winning the primary, he would have attracted candidates; but he didn’t win the primary. Hence why I said: no chance. He still was the only candidate who actually cares about the economy.
“Republicans could have run Mickey Mouse as their candidate and the polls would be exactly where they are right now. You are just like the liberal media – telling people who can and cant win. The people are ready for something different.”

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 3:24pm@Huey6367 It was a wonderful convention. I have never seen anything like it. So much different than the fake go to Germany ending with fake Greece and they didn’t buy a bag of candy they bought a Trojan horse promising more than goodies. Br a good little citizen and vote for us and you get free food, free insurance, free refinancing, free pictures of us and we get free your plane Air Force One, your confidence in us to make decisions for you and all that for just a pittance of a grocery bill. You don’t have to work; in fact you won’t, thanks to us, just vacation with a beer and watch us golf, swim in Spain (American beaches are just too you know) play golf (more golf games than all presidents combined) shop in Target when bored, sit in the sun and watch us lie and buy the biggest welfare scam ever. You will never have to work again. Well, at least until we let you. Those goodies buy all that and more, you silly thing. VOTE ROMNEY RYAN and do better than that. Work and have dignity. Watch a whole new player at the bat. That one struck OUT.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 12:40pmlook how easily duped these sheep are. What are the chances the corrupt and evil power players who run our government would allow a ‘good’ person through the gates. Look at the people at the top of RNC and Fox News – are they moral and righteous people? NO. In order to make it through, you have to make promises to them and play their game. That is why people like Herman Cain and Ron Paul do not receive their support.
This is a game to the elites and as long as people like Mapgirl keep falling for these tricks – this evil and corrupt federal government will continue

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 12:43pmRomney has the executive experience this country so desperately needs. Executive experience in politics. Executive experience in business. This country is essentially one gigantic business. The largest business in the world. You need a man like Romney to operate this big, giant business.
Watch the changes he will make and this country will be so much better off. More money in your pocket and less in the governments.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 12:25pmInstead of calling Romney the “Gipper.“ You should call him ”The Big Dipper” because he is going to pour Islam directly on the U.S, and of course Barrack Obama was “The Little Dipper.” Lol. Posted on August 31, 2012 at 2:34pm100% agreement. The great Ronald Reagan will never be equaled and the comparisons always makes the person trying to tie himself to Reagan look like he didn’t really understand how great Reagan was. I don’t know, but I would guess the same thing went on for the 50 years after Washington died.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 3:59pmGood thoughts, except I don’t think Romney is claiming to be Reagan. It‘s other people making the comparison’s or at least asking the question. He’s certainly mentioned Reagan, but more out of respect for the amazing president he was. I don’t think “Reagan Lite” is what he’s shooting for.
Maybe I’m a bit too hopeful and optimistic, but I think Romney will go down in history as one of the great presidents in our country. I think he’ll pull us out of the mess we are in and right the ship. He may not be Reagan, but I think he’ll be up there on the pedestal with him.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 5:42pmMormon, I never thought Romney was trying to make the comparison. The talking heads that make the comparison are the ones that I think don’t fully appreciate Reagan. I think Mitt is his own man. I didn’t vote for him, but he is a very impressive man and I am starting to think he really does understand how close we are to the precipice.

Posted on August 31, 2012 at 12:21pmYes, Romney is the next “Gipper”, because just as Ronald Reagan brought about a sleepiness to the U.S while Communism spread throughout the U.S, and the fall of the Soviet Union was a fuel unto the Communist to move with a purpose. So will be Romney be unto the spread of Islam. Therefore I guess you can call him the next “Gipper.” Because like Reagan – Romney will be more concerned about security, wealth, money, economy, and power – and the position of the U.S in the world.
