Is Morality on the Rebound in America?

Is Morality on the Rebound in America? Each year, Gallup asks citizens to weigh in on the state of morality in America. Generally speaking, the results are pretty grim. But, 2011 is looking a bit more favorable.

Based on stats released earlier today, the public seems to think that the nation is on an increasingly more moral path. When asked to rate the “overall state of moral values in the country,“ 38 percent of the nation selected ”poor,” with only 23 percent claiming that the nation’s values are “excellent” or “good.”

Sure, these proportions are still discouraging, but when you look at previous years’ results, things seem to be looking up (if only slightly). Last year, a larger segment — 45 percent — of the nation claimed that America’s values were “poor.” Interestingly, Gallup claims that this decrease in negatively is directly matched with an increase of positivity regarding the nation’s moral fabric:

The seven-point decline in negative reviews of U.S. morals over the past year is roughly matched by an eight-point increase, from 15% to 23%, in those describing morals as “excellent” or “good.“ The percentage calling them ”only fair” is unchanged at 38%.

But, life isn’t static. Asking people where they think the nation currently stands is great, but what about looking into the future? Gallup has it covered:

Americans are also slightly more optimistic than they were a year ago about the direction in which the nation’s morals are headed… About 7 in 10 Americans (69%) now say moral values in the country as a whole are getting worse, down from 76% last year.

While these results show an improvement, an important question needs to be asked: Is morality truly improving or are Americans becoming more accepting of cultural changes that are often reinforced by the media? Take our poll below and tell us what you think:

Just where do you think morality came from?
I have a historical Book that says God laid out the moral guidlines about 5,000 years ago. We call them Judeo/Christian values, (or morals). Remember the 10 comandments?
Have you ever felt guilt. That‘s because it’s in everyone‘s DNA by God’s design.

Unless you are talking about apostate churches like the United Methodist and Episcopal denominations.Where there is a wide gap between them, along with other non-Biblical religions, and morality.

It is possible, to some extent, to be moral and not belong to a religious group. Unfortunately, without faith in Jesus, there is no forgiveness for immorality. So if you don’t live a perfect life, you are still toast in the end! No matter how ‘moral’ you think you are. Because no one is without sin!

Rational Man is correct, someone can be “good” without religion but what is the standerd for “good”. If you look at nearly all Western law it comes from the bible. What usually qualifies as a broken law is a sin. Even though the punishment isn’t the same the Book of Deuto. laws are still practiced today. Without a faith in a deity or religion men fall into the void of government control, because that ethier becomes the largest authority in their lives or the government follows an atheistic path in which what moral is very subjective. That why our government takes on stance there is God and he’s why we have freedom but you worship him the way you like.

I believe with all of my heart that the Holy Spirit is on the move, because of the heartfelt prayers of millions of Christians begging for help. Father, Son & Holy Spirit are on the move. Evil cannot win. We must gain true knowledge from the Words of God so that we will win the battles we are facing or about to face. God wins in His time and in His way.

I disagree. I do not believe we are “born” knowing right from wrong. It is instilled in us by our surroundings and who we associate with. Morality is like learning a language. If we hear Italian, we speak Italian, if we hear Russian, we speak Russian.

Right now we have the highest raking politicians in our land being trashy, lying, cheating…what do we expect? If we do not hold the people that represent us to a higher standard, we surely won’t hold ourselves to one.
Morality is on the wane.. We accept crap in Washington and it has spread throughout our land. It is what it is…of course it depends on the definition of “IS”… we are desensitized.

Now we are getting into Postmodernism. And that is one of, if not the biggest problems with morality today. Postmodernism doesn’t believe in absolute truth. It believes everything is relative to the individuals own belief system. Or, in other words, whatever the individual wants to believe. Therefore, if some freak thinks that his sexual orientation is for little boys, then he justifies his perversion. It’s natural for him, (he thinks), so it’s okay. We have seen some of this in America’s courts already!

Agreed. We let children watch all this immoral stuff on TV and they think it’s the norm! They want to be like and look like everyone else. Then losing virginity at an early age (prob. from seeing their divorced moms entertain men overnight) just what are these kids supposed to believe in? When you forget God and pride in yourselves the rest of it goes downhill. I pray for restoration of belief in God, pride in being a moral person (thoughts and deeds) dress modestly for a change and act like you care.
Believing abortion solves the problem is the problem, but making us pay for abortion is against my principles. Too many stories about women who finally realize they actually killed a little baby and suffer mental disorders from the loss, abound. Believe in God, pray against what’s become the norm in this country, live a moral life. It’s really more fun than being immoral.

I think it is improving ever so slightly. Thanks in large part to the Tea Party and people like Glenn Beck (oh yeah – and people like most of us!). I believe we have a real opportunity to improve things on the whole. The problem as I see it is that there is a lot of time between November 2010 & the even more vital elections in 2012. Keeping the “fire in the belly” for that amount of time is difficult at best.

Every conservative HAS to do their best to teach and persuade as many other people as humanly possible. There are a few thousand folks who regularly read The Blaze, a few dozen who stay involved enough to post at least a few times a week. A Presidential election requires TENS of MILLIONS to really influence things to any substantial degree.

While I do my very best to NOT respond to the trolls – they do serve a purpose in that they night makes us think a little more and give us a chance to sharpen/ refine our arguments/positions.

If someone thinks morality is on the rise in America, it is just because we have to defend good moral values more than ever before. And therefore we might be hearing more about people standing up for morality. But it doesn‘t mean it’s on the rise……Unfortunately!
As someone else said, some people think some things are okay that used to be taboo. I saw a report, possibly on The Factor, where someone asked people on the street about adultry. Many people, including women, thought it was okay. Especially if participants ‘thought’ they were in love.
The sanctity of marrage means nothing to many. And then there is the, ‘in your face’, homosexuality and rise in child abuse.
Come on!….Anyone who thinks morality is on the rebound is clueless!

The thing about Morality is not what we think about it it is what God thinks about it. I would say that we are pretty discusting to Him right now. We kill the most innocent and have illgalized it and protect it. We approve and are promoting gay marriage and the gay agenda. We have kicked God out of the schools and most of public life. Our Courts and goverment for the most part are Progressive and they look at the world in a very ungodly way. I wonder how God holds back. I wonder if all the natural disasters going on right now in this country is God trying to get our attention??? I think so. What will it take to stop abortion, the gays, the progressives, are we willing to find out by tempting God and daring Him? That is not mentioning al the sexual immorality done by us that is never reported on because it is so common place. Are we daring God and thumbing our noses at Him saying to ourselves He will not do anything, He is a kind and loving God? He is but He is a just and a God that demands righteousness. He will only take so much!

We are the ones bringing morality back. I figured it out last week. You see, in this day and age it is extremely popular to be a freak. The more a person is a freak, the more people seem to pay attention to them. The problem with this trend is that everybody is becoming freaks. As this trend of being a freak increases, being a freak is no becoming the norm. This means that us who are of the norm, are now becoming the freaks. IF the trend continues, which I suspect it will, then all the freaks will become normal people, thus , desiring to be freaks again, will become like us. Understand ??

This trend has been cycling through America ever since the robber barons wiped us clean.

First, anyone telling you God is punishing us for immorality, for who we stand with, or any judgement via tornado, earthquake, famine, etc is lying and ignorant of God…God’s punishment is individual, just as salvation is individual…Collectivism is the thought we are all judged as one nation and saved as one nation, a lie…God judges the righteous and the wicked separate….

You can have all the morals in the world but without Jesus you are not saved, you are not of God, just as Peter told Cornelius in Acts.

As for morality in this world, NO, it is getting worse everyday just as morality became worse and worse in Noah’s day. Immortality such as murder, theft, sexual perversion, lying, idols, false gods, non compassionate, increase each generation at faster rates each generation..

There are some, like a lot of us, who keep these morals and try to share and infect others…Unfortunately, there are many immoral people doing the same …Remember, there was only 8 saved in Noah’s time…Keep God’s commandments and follow Christ…

If you are one that does have compassion for your neighbor please remember the folks in Joplin and in OK who need our help..Red cross and salvation army is probably the best route in aiding these families..Sorry Grandma5, I just got home this afternoon…

i agree with the article that morality is on the rise. look at the work that the tea party has done. also i’ve seen so many people reach out to act. Where once people just stood by. Lets take a look at the lady who put herself in harms way to help the transgender person. look at the people willing to stand against tyranny. It is difficult to see this through all of the evil out there. That does not mean that good is not on the rise.

Please forgive the refrence. time magazine did an article on the most important person of the 20th cent. they stated that hitler was it. this naturally infuriated me until i realized that they were right. due to the extent of his evil actions it bonded the good people around the world to fight as a unified force against him and his actions(evil).

I strongly feel that this is what is going to happen soon because of soros, ahmadinejackoff, ovomit, and co.

Is morality on the rise in America…

No, but the people with morals are choosing to take a stand, that is what is on the rise.

I have to say no, because I think of morality as also including moral fiber and strength. I won’t say yes until I see people returning to the ideals of the Founders and quit with the “I’m entitled” attitudes.

No morality is not on the increase. Morality is being twisted around to mean the opposite of what is really moral…… Just as the Bible says that in the last days, “men will have itching ears” and want to hear moral teaching that is perverted to true morality.

      @GodLovinMom

Individual responsibility, yes. Following prophesy in turning to the days of Noah, yes. There is no difference in Noah’s day and today. The good thing is those that read God’s word, understanding individuality is shown thru Christ, can gather a better understanding of prophesy, not the collective prophesy lied to us and used on us.

      Stay safe

You can’t legislate morality. It’s a personal thing. Set your own personal level and hope that it spreads.

My opinion is morality in America has not changed. Americans have changed their attitude towards speaking up for morality. Most Americans have become a silent majority about alot of things not just morality. We see the destruction our silence has created and we are making a change. We will be heard now, we will not go away, we will not be afraid to speak out anymore our views on God, morality, race, religion, Israel, sharia, Constitution, truth, justice, freedom, marriage, sex, male, female, genders, dogs, pets, fur, guns, plants, meat, people living in the Amazon (leave them alone they have lived their for centuries without us Pachamama Alliance!), what else? I‘m sure there’s more to add feel free.

Morality isn‘t increasing it’s the definition of what is considered moral behavior that is broadening.

Thanks HEAVYDUTY. I pray for the same. I wonder if this isn‘t the result of how vice has crept in and we are now so complacent that we actually are embracing things that we shouldn’t. I have always said that Christ is an inconvenient truth. We claim to be Christian but ignore the commandments and somehow think they don’t apply in this era. THEY DO. No matter how much society’s view changes, Christ does not and His commandments are still applicable.

In regards to people leaving the church, in my opinion a lot of it has to do with people imposing their values on the Bible instead of receiving their values from the Bible.

Take a look at Calvin’s Geneva Bible some time for a great example of this.

Many people merely pay lip service when it is convienient.
Just like some do not peoples rights of free speech an censor public chatboxes when opinion do not match their agendas, en on sites that promote and replay Glenn Becks programs.
A well, so much for high standards then.
