Could that combination be the winning ticket for Democrats’ 2012 presidential hopes? Former Delaware Gov. Pete du Pont thinks so.

Du Pont, a Republican, qualifies as a legitimate Washington insider: He served three terms in the House of Representatives and was elected governor of Delaware twice (term limits prevented a third term). In 1988, he ran for President.

In his monthly column in the Wall Street Journal yesterday, du Pont makes an educated prediction that President Barack Obama will drop Joe Biden as his running mate and replace him with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Much of du Pont’s theory comes from connecting the political dots from some very different places.

He cites the economic problems:

The Obama economy is the worst America has seen in four decades, with payroll employment today 5 percent lower than it was 41 months ago.

And the topic of spending and national debt are added to the equation:

Over the past three years, federal spending as a percentage of gross domestic product has been higher than at any time since World War II, adding $4 trillion to our national debt.

Those points made me wonder: Why would Biden become the sacrificial lamb in the 2012 election? Weren’t the policies, the spending and the debt all Obama’s decisions?

Du Pont clarifies by focusing on the political problems facing Democrats outside of the White House race in 2012. The Democrats currently control the Senate with a razor thin margin, but the coming election offers Republicans a great chance to regain control of the Senate while maintaining the edge they won in the House in 2010.

The potential of a GOP dominated Congress makes winning the White House even more vital to Democrats. Therefore, the ticket must be the strongest possible combination of a still-popular-with-the-base Obama and whoever is capable of delivering moderate voters and the all-important female demographic.

Du Pont believes that “fresh thinking” is needed to bolster Obama’s re-election chances, and that fresh thinking would best come from a familiar name with a high approval rating:

Last December a USA Today/Gallup poll found Mrs. Clinton to be the most admired woman in politics. A poll in March found that 66% viewed Mrs. Clinton favorably and just 31% unfavorably.

The latest Gallup data also displays a need for Obama to bring more political star power to the top tier of the ticket.

Three years into a four-year stint in the White House, with an “approval rating” hovering in the low 40s does not bode well for Obama’s re-election hopes.

Obama understands that women are essential to his re-election. In 2008 it was estimated that he earned 56 percent of the female vote and will need that again in the coming election. A little more than a week ago his campaign announced a new initiative called “Women for Obama” with first lady Michelle Obama serving as honorary chair and expected to be seen on the campaign trail quite often.

Earlier this week the WSJ also published a piece from former Democratic pollsters Pat Caddell and Doug Schoen urging the president to just drop out of the 2012 election and clear a path for Hillary Clinton to run:

If President Obama is not willing to seize the moral high ground and step aside, then the two Democratic leaders in Congress, Sen. Harry Reid and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, must urge the president not to seek re-election—for the good of the party and most of all for the good of the country. And they must present the only clear alternative—Hillary Clinton.

Du Pont does not seem to support the One-Term Obama theory of Caddell and Schoen, but he does recognize the broad spectrum of benefits that the addition of Hillary Clinton could bring to the ticket. And that includes the “halo effect” of having the still-loved, Bill Clinton in and around the White House.

Also cited in the WSJ story, the results of an October survey from Suffolk University, asking Floridians how they would vote if Hillary Clinton replaced Biden on the ticket.

Those results speak volumes, especially when you consider the importance of a battleground state like Florida with 29 electoral votes.

Additionally, we should be recall the powerful speech made by then-Sen. Clinton as she conceded the primary race and endorsed Obama. The nearly-30 minute concession speech spent just under six minutes on wrapping up her campaign and the remaining 20-plus minutes extolling Obama and rallying her loyal base to support and elect him.

Perhaps this is payback for Clinton delivering her base in 2008.

In mid-September The Blaze also predicted that Biden would be out in 2012, replaced by NY’s Gov Cuomo, not Hillary Clinton. The basis for the initial prognostication was more intuitive than anything else.       Americans need to wake up and realize politicians are like drug addicts, when their lips are moving more than likely they are being dishonest. The American people are being played by our Government. If you just look at the corruption going on in our political system around the country, it kinda seems they know something we don’t. all the imoral behavior, dishonesty and stealing, these politicians act like they know there is no God. the selfish self serving behavior going on in Washington is beyond sick. these people act like they have no one to answer to. the hypocrisy is beyond sick. it is all going to come back and bite us.

      Glenn made an interesting comment on Imus, he was asked about a Obama re election, he said he believed Obama would be re elected. after that comment he said its like they know something we don’t. i believe that as well. The arrogance in Washington is so strong and in our face, going around congress and the constitution is unbelievable. And what are we doing, so busy with our lives we are just letting Government lead our country down a destructive path. Hillary is a career politician, with her own shady dealings in the past. Pay attention America.

      I have read and heard more than once that if the Government had knowledge that there was other forms of life, they would not be able to tell us because morality would go out the window. well that’s exactly what our politicians are acting like in Washington.

      Hillary is not one to play second to Obama as VP. She has sat back for the past 4yrs and patiently waited for her golden opportunity, this is not what she will settle for. If she waits until after another term under Obama to become president I would be surprised. I believe the progressives plan all the long was for Obama to be a one term president and to accomplish as much as possible in the 4yrs as president. Then the door would be opened for Hillary to take over. She stated to early that she is a progressive. If you noticed that term is seldom used since Beck and his team exposed the truth. The media has praised the Clintons for years. Brainwashing the American people to believe that they are more powerful than God. A statement was made awhile back calling Bill Clinton the president of the world. In the last 6 mo. Hillary has been popping up everywhere. Now Chelsea. The money and power behind the Clintons is massive. They are the king and queen of this movement. The progressives know the strength that Hillary has, thanks to the main stream media, Hollywood, and Sorus. We are up against a strong and well financed organazation. They have patiently nudged us along for years.They are past nudging and are going to pull out their big guns. The stage is set, all of their ducks are in a row. It will be interesting to see what happens when all of these groups that normally hate each other go to war among themselves for control.I pray that we can defeat them. God help us.

      I would bet that this happens. THEN the rest of AMERICA will really have to get behind CAIN and kick these brats out of office. Hillary would be paid a huge ransom for doing this, Bill would push for it…then she thinks she could sail into the next 2016 slot and beyond. Look, I like Herman Cain, but you should really come to grips with the fact that he will not be the nominee. “Ain’t gonna happen.” The media hacks are desperately trying to convince us that Romney is a shoe-in. But, Gingrich is going to be the nominee. And I think he will win the election. When Sarah Palin finally endorses him, which I guarantee you she will, Newt will win primary after primary, and the current line-up of candidates will quickly drop like flies. Cain will be among the first to bail, knowing that he will have a job, probably as either Secretary of the Treasury or Commerce, in the Gingrich Administration.

    I totally doubt it. If anything I think that if Obama is not firmly in the lead by the Democratic Convention, there will be a significant move to draft Hillary as the nominee thus catching the Republicans off balance and totally recasting the election that would be only 60 days away at that point. Looking at the current field of Republican contenders, such a move could have the capability of swinging a large number of independents back to the Democratic party, possibly resulting in a win.

    Not only could this be the “Plan B”… it might be the “Plan A”. Obama might already know he will not serve another term. It would explain why with with the economy in a shambles, the Mid-East at a flash-point, and America on the edge of societal breakdown, Obama putts as America burns. Being cavalier (“Americans are getting lazy”), unconcerned, and letting America simply come apart at the seams would fit the personality of a narcissist that‘s already been told he’s unwanted and out.

    In any regard, I don‘t think you’ll see Hillary jump into the back seat while Obama’s driving.

      Koyettsu, you bring up an interesting point. Will Clinton “take one for the team” in order to keep democrats in the WH? The only way I see Obama winning another term is to shake up the race with a wild card such as Hillary. It just depends on how bad she wants to be president someday. If she were to run with Obama this round and he continues on the path he is on, the democrats will not see another White House for generations.

    I’d rather think Obama is gonna bounce himself for Hillary! I think there was a prior 2009 agreement for the Bill and Hillary endorsement and for a national health care plan, with the SOS job in between! Remember the private meeting during the campaign that no one has knowledge of what was discussed, shortly after Hillary conceded and bowed out after breaking the glass ceiling!

Which is scary enough there is a movie about her I forget the name but it was blocked from showing during the 2008 primaries and now can be seen after a Supreme Court ruling.       Do not think for one moment that the 2012 elections are going to be fair by any means. I do agree that America has wakened and, if the elections were fair, we would elect a monkey over Obama or Hillary. But the same leftist Dem base…….the 47% entitlement crowd paying zero taxes, the union thugs, the Occupy-idiots, etc……will vote in the next cycle the same as they always have which will give Dems a core vote.     There is speculation that Mr. Biden bill will be replaced as the Democratic nominee for VP in the 2012 election.

    Rudolf Hess was Hitler’s Vice-Chancellor during early World War II. In the early 1940’s, Hess parachuted into Scotland, uninvited, to negotiate a peace treaty. He was retained by the British as a prisoner of war.

      if this happens and they do get elected..we can all bend over and kiss out butts good bye. We have all read that she is an ardent Alinsky follower, much more than Obama is. She will give credibility to his stupidity.
      She has a mean nasty political machine and will stomp any Republican into the ground..Why?…because Republicans do not fight back.
      Wow…I can just see Carville rubbing his hands together and cacklin’…..
      Watch out America , is this is true, we are in for hell.
