Is Oprah Begging People to Watch Her Floundering Network?

Oprah Winfrey’s ratings were once the thing network-dreams were made of. Now, however, the veteran talk show host may be feeling pressure to increase her fledgling network’s sparse viewership. In what seemed to be a plea to boost OWN’s ratings, Winfrey tweeted followers: “Every 1 who can please turn to OWN especially if u have a Nielsen box.”
Winfrey subsequently deleted the tweet after being informed the message may have violated Nielsen’s policy prohibiting networks from influencing ratings.
“I removed the tweet at the request of Nielsen,” Winfrey said in a statement Monday. “ I intended no harm and apologize for the reference.”
A Nielsen representative told The New York Times that an asterisk will be attached to OWN’s ratings
NY Daily News adds:
At the time of the tweet, an episode of “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” the Oprah Winfrey Network’s signature show, was airing that featured the TV mogul visiting Hassidic Jewish families in Brooklyn.
She was almost immediately hit with a backlash: Several followers accused her of “being desperate.”
“The word ‘please’ is used as courtesy not a beg … ‘desperate’ not ever a part of my vocab …” Winfrey responded, according to EW.com.
OWN debuted in January 2011, eight months before Winfrey ended her hugely popular television talk show, but the channel has since been rocked by changes at the executive level, programming shifts and weak ratings.
Discovery, Winfrey’s partner on the channel, spent $250 million getting OWN off the ground, though has yet to have much to show for it.

The problem she currently has it that many, if not most, of her old viewers don’t have cable packages that have OWN as part of the package. It isn’t available on most basic cable. You may not like her for endorsing Obama but that’s not a likely reason that her viewership is down. Personally, I have no use for her and don’t miss hearing her annoying voice when the other half turns on the TV before the news at 5:00.

Apparently she did not do the demographics on her audience/readers or she would have found out they were middle class Americans, many of them independents or conservatives, myself included. I watched her faithfully, gave subscriptions to her mag to friends for Christmas, supported her charities. Her reporting on NO and Katrina sent up a red flag but her support of Obama nailed the coffin shut. For all the good she has done, I will only remember her as a traitor to this country and the capitalist system – she sold her soul to the devil.

Posted on February 13, 2012 at 10:41pmActually, Glenn periodically tells people watching ‘The Program’ that if they aren’t watching everyday or quite often and really actively engaging with the show, and doing their homework, then save your money and cancel your subscription. If you just have the show on as background noise, cancel and save your money for more useful pursuits.
Frankly it is refreshing to hear someone say anything along these lines.
Since I canceled cable about 2 years ago, I stopped watching TV other than Netflix, and catching certain network series on streaming sites. Now I have GBTV and The Glen Beck Program, as well as Real News w/ The Blaze , and the radio program, make up the vast bulk of my daily viewing.
With all that I DON’T watch these days, I still don‘t feel like I’m missing much.
