Is Rick Perry‘s First Campaign Ad ’Over-the-Top?’

New Rick Perry Ad Calls Obama President 0, Targets His Economic PoliciesRick Perry’s first campaign ad predictably takes aim at President Barack Obama and his handling of the American economy.

While calling Obama “President 0” in reference to the charge that he has no viable accomplishments nearly three years into his presidency, the ad goes on to say that the nation doesn’t “need a president who apologizes for America.” Politico’s James Hohmann describes the ad as follows:

“…an epic new bio spot today. The first 40 seconds attack “PRESIDENT ZERO,” juxtaposing eerie images of national stagnation with footage of Barack Obama taking responsibility for the economy. A tornado siren playing over the president’s voice creates a palpable sense of alarm. The last minute of the web ad introduces Perry as a job creator and veteran who believes America’s best days are ahead…

HotAir’s Ed Morrissey, though, has a different take on the video, writing:

It doesn’t give a warm biography of the candidate, except for a background picture of Perry in his Air Force pilot’s jumpsuit.  Instead, the spot takes the first 40 seconds to blast Barack Obama and then set the theme of the Perry campaign, which is that he wants to get America working again.

In yet another description, Grace Wyler over at Business Insider writes that the ad is a bit over-the-top:

Cut to — a galloping stallion, American flags, and Governor Perry declaring his belief in American exceptionalism and deep love for the United States.

The ad was produced by Lucas Baiano, the 23-year-old Canadian-borm filmmaker responsible for Tim Pawlenty’s dramatic campaign ads, and features the same theatrical soundtrack and cutaway shots. The effect is a little less ridiculous, but still pretty over-the-top.

After viewing the advertisement, it does seem as though it lacks enough biographical information to be called a “bio spot.” On the flip side, the first portion of the ad does a comprehensive job of targeting Obama and what some believe to be his failed economic policies.

In the end, though, Americans are going to want to see substance coming from the candidates. From a strictly political perspective, the ad is certainly successful in rallying emotion. But when it comes to solid and viable information about how jobs will be created, it isn’t very robust.

To be fair, this first ad was likely meant to be a simple introduction to the campaign rather than a hard-hitting explanation of Perry’s economic action plan.

Watch the new ad and judge for yourself, below:

      Hey Gooch,
How about giving some facts to back up your statement, instead of flapping your gums. I think most have learned not to take what comes out of someone’s mouth as being the truth…Obama comes to mind..and we see how that has effected America.! I live in Texas and Perry has done some things that I don’t agree with(i.e. HPV, toll roads, state tuition for illegals), but the man has brought jobs to Texas and stands up for what Americans believe in. He follows the Constitution and is a Proud American…hey Obama came to mind again…he is the opposite of Perry isn’t he? We need this type of AMERICAN to bring us back from the brink!

…Perry also construed to the attendees that he was passionate about immigrant children’s education and America seeing them as he sees them—as much of an American citizen as someone who is born in the United States. Perry welcomes those who want the opportunities they can’t find in their homeland, declining to build a border fence in Texas as Arizona has done.

When Perry threw his hat into the ring I thought, wow this could be a good thing for the Republican party. I then spoke to my family and friends who lived in Texas and they were quite shocked that I thought he was Okay because they knew my position on immigration.

When I did my research on this man all that was going through my head was and this guy is a conservative-no way. Thanks for your articles and I hope people read them and decide to do their own research to verify for themselves Perry’s real record in Texas and not the story that is being fed to them by certain right leaning cable stations.

‘Over the top’? What’s “over the top‘ is a ’president’ (and I use the term LOOSELY), who has socialists and communists in his ‘czar’ cabinet, who tries to EO the DreamAct, who takes over the ENTIRE healthcare system, instead of just focusing on the part that’s broken, whose wife (Michelle Antoinette), takes separate planes to vacation at places like Martha’s Vineyard (might white and mighty rich), after he treks around the midwest in a CANADIAN-made 1.4 million bus (all of which is paid for by taxpayers – well, the 50% who actually do…bad Bush deal…), while telling US to sacrifice? Apologizing for America, promoting EVERY Muslim holiday (and sending INSTRUCTIONS on how to memorialize 9/11 at Ground Zero), bowing to foreign leaders, voting against BAIPA, arresting the Amish for selling raw milk and going after Gibson guitars (Republican owner), while not prosecuting the Black Panthers after Philly? THAT’S OVER THE F-ING TOP!!!! And he IS just getting started. Perry isn’t perfect…noone is…but Elmer Fudd would be better than Barack Hussein Obama! I think the ad ROCKS! And it uses Obamao’s own words against him, with great imagery to back up the rhetorical emptiness of ‘Hope and Change’. First it’s the White House, (and with it, the judgeships) then it’s the Senate, and we all need to focus more on our local elections. Point blank, this is IT!!!! If you love your country, warts and all, we don’t need a transformation, we need a REFORMATION!

Sorry, but we need Marco in Senate for a little while. He is a legislator at heart. Palin has exec experience and she would bring real conservatives to the ballot. I say Perry/Palin 2012. These 2 could actually serve 8 years and right this ship. I think Palin would be a good power check for Perry’s tendencies to work without the legislative. Of course he should announce this after primaries. We need him to get the nomination and then Palin can deliver the Conservative (Tea) votes. Sarah does well as VP for 8 years, likely shoe in for President for 2020. We are going to need these 2 for the next 16 years to turn this country around and root out the socialists/marxists/communists/muslim-sharia/progressives in all areas of our federal government. Need them to lead serious reform for much of the socialist programs for the past 100+ years. We also need to keep control of congress in both houses for quite some time so those program reforms and eliminations can get back in line with the Marjority of Americans. Progressive entrenchment in American society needs to be rooted out as Anti-Constitution and Un-American. Let these days of rage go on. Sheriff Arpaio in AZ knows how to build prisons that reform. If unions want to target Americans and Patriots of the Constitution, then they can go to jail for long terms for treason. I don’t mind taking bailout money for banks and Wall Street and building Large Federal prisions to house these traitors. WTP live and die by the US Constituti

Do you know anything about the Texas Emerging Technology Fund?

Tens of millions of dollars of Texas taxpayer money given to companies with direct ties to Rick Perry donors. Rick Perry is a Corporate Socialist. If you believe that the government has no business picking winners & losers in the real economy (Does Solyndra ring a bell?) then you should understand that Rick Perry has been doing the exact same thing in Texas for years. The media is completely ignoring this story for now but this will not last.

Perhaps you have noticed Sarah Palin hammering Perry on Crony Capitalism? There is much, much, more to this story that 99% of the public has not yet heard. As all the pieces of the Rick Perry puzzle continue to come together, you will see that he is nothing but a politician in conservative clothing.

Combine this with Rick Perry’s reckless and arrogant Executive Order mandating 11 year old girls to receive a government mandated vaccination for a sexually transmitted disease (that was turned over by his legislature), his pandering to illegal immigrants and you have yourself a fraud as clear as the nose on your face.

Wake up and realize that a vote for Perry is a vote for Obama.

I am so disappointed by Blazers.

SO let me get this straight, the “TEA Partiers” originally said NO RINOS, we want a constitutionalist!

The TEA Partiers then claimed that they wanted someone who would “fix our economy”, and that was priority.

      However:

Then the TEA Partiers got brain washed by the media to believe “Well no constitutionalist is electable, so you will have to vote establishment. Not “Bachmann” (which I still question) or Ron Paul WHO ACTUALLY UNDERSTANDS ECONOMICS!

So now you have sold yourself to Perry, and justify it by saying “Oh he made some mistakes but he has changed now…”

“He made some mistakes but he has changed now…”

Are you serious people???????????????? You really believe a flip flop politician, who has flip flopped in the past before, will NOT flip flop for his personal gain??

Stop listening to talk radio lies, stop listening to FOX lies, because if you don’t and when this country goes to hell because of a currency crisis, the only people to blame will be the mindless drones here!

Note to Perry: When it comes to bho. expose him, expose him, & expose him some more. Let everyone know what his garbage is. The other day a car in front of me had an obama 2012 sticker on it. Thought to myself, this guy isn’t an Idiot, just that friends had played a joke on him & he hadn’t noticed the sticker on the back of his car yet.

Right on!. I read what Pat Boone had to say about Obama. It‘s all stuff I’ve believed but it seemed to be swept under the rug. However, I’m still befuddled about how a man who only spent through the 5th grade in Indonesia could go back later and file for a scholarship to Occidental College as an Indonesian citizen unless he maintained his citizenship in Indonesia???? So, is he legally, Kenyan, Indonesian or America???? Too many inconsistencies to suit me, including a fake birth certificate.

In any case, he was raised in Indonesia, went to an Islamic school where you had to be a citizen of that country and beliefs to attend their school. Seems to love these people, seems that he doesn’t understand American people or beliefs or anything that is traditional to Americans. He’s the fraud!

I like it very much and time will tell about his politics. He has had to deal with the Hispanic situation and maybe as president he will listen to the voice of the people about finishing the border fence.

Are you a lemming who will cast your vote because of a slick ad?

You should do some more homework on Perry before you drink his kool-aid. Have you not noticed the disturbing similarities between the way the conservative media is pumping Perry and the way the liberal media pupmps Obama.

Google: Texas Emerging Technology Fund, David G. Nance, ThromboVision.

      Do your homework.

      Don’t be a conservative lemming.

What a complete joke! At some point (in the not too distant future) people will begin to see that it is Rick Perry who is most like Barack Obama. Crony Capitalism, Executive Mandates taking health-care choices away from families, Dream Act, Support for Al Gore, Opposition to a Border Fence, and more.

Perry is pursuing this strategy in an attempt to divert attention away from his own liberal policies. Perry is a fraud. He is a career politician who will say and do whatever he needs to get elected.

If Conservatives nominate Perry, they will be handing Obama 4 more years.

      Romney2012,
Don’t EVEN try to begin comparing Perry with Obama when your guy Mitt is the biggest conservative fraud of em all. You think Bush was bad? You try electing Romney, and lets all just see how ”conservative” he turns out to be…

Actually, it was a great ad. The only thing that that keeps it from being an excellent ad is that it didn’t show enough of how much the inept, ineffective, divisive, elitist, bumbling, progressive socialist toddler n’ thief has damaged this country and economy in less than three years.

More, please. Brilliant! We should have always seen the O logo as a zero. Now everyone will! I LOVE THIS AD! It tells the truth. It’s dramatic as heck and it should be. We live in dramatic times! I hope every other candidate is committed to laying out the truth about the destructive influence of Barak Obama. I think that the key to America winning is for Obama’s failures to be fully exposed.

That’s the kind of hard-hitting honesty that Independent voters who went for Obama last time need to hear! Even good American Democrats would have to have some doubt in their minds about voting for Obama again if they were honest with themselves.

It’s just an ad. Tim Pawlenty had a similar ad. We need more solutions less ads. It is easy to rip on Obama anyone can do that. What people can’t seem to do is put a solution together to get the country on the right track.

A W E S O M E …………………..Obama has created soooooooooo much material with all his bad decisions and terrible deeds, that I‘m glad there’s a candidate who’s calling him out on it. This is NOT OVER THE TOP, rather, THIS IS THE TRUTH about what Obama has done to our Country. When Obama says he’s just getting started, he isn’t kidding. He won’t rest until our Country is free no more.

I really like Rick Perry, because he does not beat around the bush. He is straight forward, and that is what we need right now. I am also pushing for the following:

    1) Shift 100% of tax collection from the Federal Government to State Governments, (as originally outlined in the Constitution and upheld by the Supreme court on multiple occasions before the 1900’s)

    2) Delegate more than 70% of the federal governments spending to state governments (e.g., Health and Human Services, Housing, Education, Energy, Agriculture, Labor, Social Security, entitlements, etc..)

    3) States would provide the federal government with enough money to cover the spending not delegated to the states (e.g., National Defense, Foreign Diplomacy, and other items originally outlined in the Constitution)

    4) Each state would be responsible for a percentage of the federal government’s spending

Let’s put the “s” back at the end of the United States
