Is Rick Perry Doubling Down on His Obama Birther Comments?

Rick Perry Is Being Accused of Doubling Down on the Birther Issue

Over the weekend, we learned that Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry still has some reservations about President Barack Obama’s birth certificate. Now, some say that the GOP contender is doubling down on his view that the president’s birth certificate may, indeed, be forged.

To begin, there was the doubt he expressed in an interview with Parade Magazine over the weekend. But now, in a new interview with CNBC’s John Harwood, some say that Perry has, once again, tinkered around with, and pseudo-endorsed, Birtherism.

This morning, Harwood sent the following tweet:

Rick Perry Is Being Accused of Doubling Down on the Birther Issue

Watch Perry’s statements, below:

In covering this statement, the USA Today’s David Jackson writes, “Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry appears to be doubling down on the President Obama birth certificate issue.” Jackson continues:

Perry’s apparent flirtation with the so-called “birther” issue drew criticism from some fellow Republicans who called it an unnecessary distraction from other issues (such as Perry’s flat tax plan, the subject of the CNBC interview).

Now, while some outlets will push full-throttle against Perry, claiming that he is definitively a Birther, it does seem as though he was making light of the president’s birth certificate. After all, he’s smiling while discussing how he enjoys poking fun at Obama and he even says, “I’m really not worried about the President’s birth certificate.”

That being said, Parade’s transcript of the original discussion that sparked debate over Perry‘s take on Obama’s citizenship, does raise some questions. Here’s the text:

Governor, do you believe that President Barack Obama was born in the United States?
I have no reason to think otherwise.

That’s not a definitive, “Yes, I believe he”—
Well, I don’t have a definitive answer, because he’s never seen my birth certificate.

But you’ve seen his.
I don’t know. Have I?

You don’t believe what’s been released?
I don’t know. I had dinner with Donald Trump the other night.

And?
That came up.

And he said?
He doesn’t think it’s real.

And you said?
I don’t have any idea. It doesn’t matter. He’s the President of the United States. He’s elected. It’s a distractive issue.

Interesting that he called it “a distractive issue” before telling Harwood that it’s “a good issue to keep alive.”

On Monday, MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” the on-air team — led by Joe Scarborough — lamented these comments:

Interestingly, back in September, Orly Taitz, who has become the nation’s most talked about Birther, met Rick Perry and claims that she spoke with him about Social Security fraud. Of course, this means absolutely nothing in terms of what the presidential contender believes about the issue. Still, the encounter is worth noting.

Watch the exchange, then an interview with Taitz, below:

Of course it’s not valid. No one in their right mind would believe him when he spends millions of your dollars hiding his past. When a person hides their past they have something that they do not want others to know. It’s just that plain and simple. It is odd to me that not one person in his past will step up and verify even his existence outside of a ring a ding commie preacher and his wife. . That is the most unusual part of this. There should be scores of teachers who would come forward to verify at least some credible evidence of this nimrod. This congress and senate and supreme court are all as phony as a four dollar bill. I would not believe any of them in a heart beat.

The birther issue is a dead end road. No matter how much you preach it, it will not remove Obama from office. If you want him out of office, drop the birther conspiracy game, learn the facts regarding his socialist agenda, and vote him out.

You will not get those middle of the road people (the ones that actually decide the election) by playing the birther game. You will get them on the right side of the fence, by highlighting the evils of Obama health care, the economy….

Be advised, people can seek truth and justice while preparing to cast an informed vote.

Know this truth, the usurper Obama has violated the Constitution! http://www.ObamaNotEligible.com

The Constitution is jeopardized when ignored and brings our freedom under attack! Members of our beloved military has sworn a solemn oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Even with the much maligned truth on their side, multitudes mislead and misinformed by the media tremble in fear, too weak in mind or body to fight for their freedom, seem sadly defeated and about to surrender all; yet in their heart of hearts many still dare hope silently screamed prayers might be answered by others stronger than they, ready willing and able to fight any foe, any where, any time. Why doesn’t some enterprising investigative journalist take on the task of dismantling and killing once and for all the “birther movement?” They would likely win a pulitzer for being the reporter who ending the birther movement and their paper would be lauded for the series- so why has there not been such a series? Simple to do – (1) show that the 1961 newspaper announcements could not have resulted from self reporting of a birth by a relative and must be proof of Hawaii birth – this kills the “not born in USA contention” and the “short form certificate comes from a self reported bith.” (2) show that the contention of Abobe experts that the recently released long form is a forgery are baseless by disputing each forgery argument they make. (3) show that the founder’s intent in demanding “natural born citizen” was not two citizen parents – showing evidence of that they really meant from laws and writings of that time period. (4) show that the Connecticut SSAN used by the president is an original issue to him and just a clerical error in choosing the coding. (5) show that he did not enter college as a foreign student – claiming to be Indonesian or Kenyan. (6) show that he did not claim to be Muslim requesting a Muslim college roommate. (7) show that he was not adopted in Indonesia. I think that pretty well covers all the major birther arguments that need to be refuted to kill this issue once and for all. The discussions can then focus on political/economic philosophy

I’ll start with a recommendation of Google searching: “Disproving the Obama birther conspiracies.” I guarantee you’ll be able to answer most of your questions… even if they don’t “prove” anything in the first place. If you can look at his long-form certificate and still deny what it says, you fall into the two categories I spoke of.

The “newspaper announcement” of his birth just happened to be in the newspaper that his good mentor Frank Marshall Davis worked at in Hawaii. His grandparents were friends with this man and could have gotten a birth announcement placed in the paper by him as a favor. Perhaps they did so they could show citizenship so he could go to school here etc without having to “become a citizen” legally. Perhaps they knew their daughter would be returning from Kenya and would need for her son to be a US citizen to get him back in the country. Ever think of that??

Dear Locked – I have and there does not appear to be any refutation of those claims. For example – picking just (1) from my list – all sites I have found state that the newspaper announcements trump all non-natural-borm claims and do not even address the birther claim that the announcements could have resulted from a relative self reporting the birth. In reality the internet search you suggest does NOT answer any of the claims I suggested for an astute investigative reporter and newspaper. Perhaps since you are so sure – you could find the place where the birther newspaper announcement claim is refuted. Most seem to suggest otherwise since the address on the short form birth certificate is that of the grandparents suggesting they did the self reporting.

In searching the internet the closest I have come to a good logical answer is on the SSAN – the refutation suggests that it is merely a government administrative error. CT is 06xxx and HI is 96xxx. So someone just hit the 0 instead of the 9 when inputting the zip and it assigned a CT number. This would presuppose that the process was computerized when the numbers were assigned since done manually this would not be a logical error to have made. So to refute the SSAN claim of the birthers all that is needed is to show that assignment was an automated process based on zip input and then suggest that someone hit 0 instead of 9. This coupled with showing that no one else has ever been issued that number and that the number president is using was issued at about the time he needed an SSAN to report income from his first job. That is how a logical refutation is done. Not by name calling and hand waving and “its proven” assertations – kind of like global warming claims and science.

Bet the GOP pushed Perry to attack Obama on these very-real issues, that would be suicide for a politician (like Romney) to touch. You’re right that no journalist will touch it. This is just another question Mr. Perry will need to address (stammer and fumble through) during the next GOP debate. Mr. Romney will naturally hammer Mr. Perry on this by coming across as the voice of reason.

The question may also be put to the rest of the remaining candidates and they’ll be forced to either say “I take the president at his word that he was born in the US” which is essentially playing footsie with the Birther base or actually state categorically that Mr. Obama was born in Hawaii.

In any case this further cements Mr. Romney as the inevitable GOP nominee.

As an aside you’ve got to love The Blaze writer bending over back wards to cover for Mr. Perry using weasel phrases like “some say” and “one wonders if his comments were in jest (sp)”. You’ve got to love this line … “We will have clarification on the tone and the actual video once the clip becomes available”, suggesting that the Blaze will do an analysis of Mr Perry’s tone during the interview to see if Mr. Perry was joking”.

Sooo . . . you deem me a “liberal pansy.” Fine. Perry has deemed me “heartless” for wanting America to secure its border and not reward those who break out immigration laws. Perry goes around the Texas legislature (Obama style) to mandate HPV vaccinaations that enrich his crony. He says it is becuse he is “for life’ — but he vetoes a bill banning cell phone use while driving. Consistent, do you think? Perry’s only real selling point is Texas job growth — but Texas has always had a good legislature and a good business climate. If a state’s job growth is determinative of executive ability, then we should be trying to draft the governor of North Dakota, right? Let’s face it — Perry is simply not the sharpest tool in the shed. Tag me with “elitism” for that comment if you want, but Perry flunked out of his chosen major at Texas A&M. The Left made fun of Bush for not being bright. They were wrong — Bush is quite intelligent. With Perry, however, the “dimwit” lable sticks. Sorry for speaking the truth about “your man”, but we had better face reality now AND GET BEHIND HERMAN CAIN before we are stuck with Romney. We may never know if he was eligible, because there are too many people in the government, media, and the shadow government that will make sure that can of worms never gets opened. And if he loses the next election, he will stage a “crisis” as justification for martial law, and the truth will be buried forever. And if Ron Paul goes 3rd Party, the Obamanation will surely be re-elected. A scary prospect, either way. I see that some here would rather vote for a “true” conservative, even though they will lose in the national election. Well, then, why not Michelle Bachman? She is a “true” conservative, with no chance of winning the general election, but HEY! She is a “true” conservative that we can all get behind. So where is the Tea Party now? Have we all abandoned her? And if so, why is that? Hmmmmmm………………………

Actually the best time to have checked Obama’s birth certificates was when the candidates filed for their candidacy. I am blown away that no one checked all birth certificates. They missed this knowing all the stories that has been out there about his life’s history, much of it by his own admission in his books. Since the authorities missed the boat, someone should take up the slack even though this would not be the idea time to discover that Obama is not a US citizen!

I am not a “birther”, but you are flat out wrong. Obumbler did not produce a birth certificate until Trump pushed the issue — Obumbler only presented a “Certificate of Live Birth.” Obumbler COULD have cleared things up quickly by producing the birth certificate, but he wanted to gain political advantage (by making his opponents look “wierd”) from being attacked by “birthers.”
We all know that Perry is not the sharpest tool in the shed and this move gives more evidence: pushing the birther issue might score points from some Blaze posters, but it is a losing position in a general election (and probably in a primary race, as well).

The short-form birth certificate Obama originally produced is exactly like the one I was given when I applied for a copy of my own birth certificate. That was the only certificate I needed to get a passport and a public sector job. Those who tell you it’s not accepted by the government as proof of citizenship and place of birth are liars. It’s the only certificate anyone has demanded from any citizen except the current President.

I think Obama did not bother to produce more evidence of his place of birth than was required of every other person who has ever run for President because there was no reason why he should . All of the sane and intelligent people on the country knew that this birther horse manure was just a bunch of nonsense, and the nitwits who believed in it would never vote for him even if they saw a video of him being born in a Hawaiian hospital. The only reason he finally asked the state of Hawaii to send him the long form certificate was because he saw that his country needed Donald Trump to shut his stupid yap for once and for all, and he was the only one who could deliver us from the nightmare of watching Trump blather on tv every night.

So, you go with the “Obama is an obstinate jerk” theory. The theory has merit — he is certainly that way. But I think he is a little more calculating than that.
The other theory I considered was that there was actually something on the birth certificate that would be embarassing to him. One possibility (and because I only really looked at the one produced after the Trump prodding, I don’t know if there is anything at all to this possibility) is that the birth certificate reads “Barack Husein Obama II” — I hadn’t known about the “II” For Democrats, having a numeral as part of your name could be embarassing. Remember how Tom Harkin would mockingly say “George Herbert Walker Bush”? Remember how Obama‘s campaign didn’t mention that Michelle’s brother had been an investment banker? Having a numeral in the name is “elitist” — so it could be embarassing. That is the weakest of the theories. The “Obama is an obstinate jerk” is second-strongest. But our Machievellian-in-Chief most likely played it for political advantage.

I didn’t say Obama was an obstinate jerk. I think he was perfectly right to ignore the ridiculous conspiracy theories of idiots and lunatics for as long as he did. Dignifying such nonsense with a reply is as demeaning as answering demands to prove that you’re not an alien or a werewolf. I think he underestimated the capacity of his fellow Americans to be obstinate jerks. I believe he thought this would go away on its own because he is a good and smart guy who loves his country and wants to think the best of us, and didn’t realize there were so many dirt stupid morons who will believe whatever they want regardless of logic or evidence, and so many cynical manipulative creeps who would continue to deliberately inflame the cretinous fantasies of those morons, even though they themselves were smart enough to know them to be untrue.

Whether you like it or not, the media has successfully painted “birthers” into the ‘crazy kook’ corner. Let go of your own tunnel vision for just a moment, look at it from the outside, explain to me how any “birther” comment is going to be popularly accepted? They’re not. Perry scuttles his chances with birther comments (as well as many of his other faults); Cain does the same with his religious comments, “real black” talk, and terrible tax plan; Romney comes out as the voice of moderation that would be the “logical” choice to appeal to independents.

I don‘t like his views of drugs and legalization whatsoever and I think he’s pushing to go a little to lighthanded on regulations — I would like to see more of where he stands on Right to Work and what he’ll do to dismantle the Unions, remove all Unions from government jobs since its a conflict of interest, and I’d also like to see his views on the NEA and Dept of Ed too….

      Article. II.

Yes but the independent voter is a low information voter. The independent wants to vote for a winner! By tapping these issues lightly!! Not outright just lightly, he makes Obama the other candidate the outsider! And Rick Perry wins!! independents are ME voters, how does this affect me!!

A me voter wants either there freedom or free stuff! And whoever looks stronger and more able to deliver wins that vote!! Does he outright attack like the Mitt had illegals working for his contractor!

No; that can be a offputting! But does he make Obama a joke, no matter how heartless they say you are!!
YUP!! Let someone else attack him!! Like a Santorum or a Palin attack and then he can laugh about it and ask why Obama has such thin skin!!

He’ll be a racist a bigot who hates middle class and poor people no matter what!! EVen if he’s the perfect gentleman!

Since this story won’t go away that should say something. All the liberal political pressure can’t kill it and that says a lot. The truth has no agenda and it will prevail eventually.

What good will it do, he’s almost through his first year? I think Perry should leave the B.C issue to Orly..

The story that 9/11 was an inside job took a long time to go away. The story that Walt Disney’s cryogenically preserved body is in a vault under Disneyland took a long time to go away. The story that James Dean didn’t die in a car crash, but went into hiding because he was horribly disfigured took a long time to go away. The ability of idiots to refuse to stop believing in a stupid story is not proof of validity.

I didn’t say he was an obstinate jerk.

There is some reason they could never get him a USA Passport in his own right and he traveled to Indonesia with mommy and new hubby on Mommie’s passport after her failed attempts to get him his own. A problem never cleared up before he became President. In spite of some supposed “FIRE” in some Federal office…

Obama’s recent release of his purported birth certificate alleging “where” he was born, also indicates his parent’s citizenship “when” he was born. Unless Obama admits fraud, these equally important “facts” are now beyond Obama’s ability to refute, alter or hide!

The now inescapable truth, is that his Kenyan father absolutely precludes Obama from being a natural born citizen, as required for eligibility to serve as President by Article 2, Section 1, of the US Constitution!

Please don’t let the biased media or even uniformed conservative talk radio or TV hosts, dissuade you from learning the truth about his ineligibility or from demanding his removal from office, while also preparing to cast an informed vote in the next election. Let it be their credibility that‘s hurt by dismissing Obama’s birth certificate and social security anomalies while also sadly ignoring the Constitution, not yours! Why risk Obama being reelected by anti-American socialists and imminent vote fraud?

Get the truth about his fake birth certificate & social security number as alleged by experts, and the Constitutional proof that a “natural born citizen” is one born in the US of TWO US citizen parents!

See the simple proof that a “natural born citizen” is not the same thing as a citizen!

It costs nothing to look, but it could cost you everything if you don’t.

How to know the truth and remove Obama from office now! http://www.ObamaNotEligible.com

You are right about one thing, a “natural born citizen” is not the same thing as a citizen. The term citizen also includes naturalized citizens – people who were born in other countries and became citizens later. Anyone born here is born a citizen, and that’s what natural born citizen means. There is no third kind of citizen who is born a citizen but not born a natural born citizen.
